Finnish Motto Kiosk - Kyllä lähtee!

Postby Jerenia » Fri Dec 10, 2010 4:32 pm

I don't think this has ever been done before, so I might give it a shot. I'm not expecting huge popularity or a thousand replies by the time I wake up tomorrow morning, but I s'pose there must be one or two who might be interested. For the record, yes, I speak Finnish as my mother tongue and know pretty much all its quirks and oddities. It's probable that I give you several choices, because being the complex language it is, there might be different ways to say it: let that be spoken or formal language or a-whole-nother dialect. Don't worry though, I promise to give detailed descriptions and preferences as to which one I prefer. :)

Yup, that'd be: "Murmansk, pohjoisen maa".

Would "ja sanovat että mul on iso kyrpä" be considered to be inappropiate as a motto?

I don't know whose motto that is, but since the last word is a very derogatory term for penis (way more powerful than cock, for example), I wouldn't consider it a good choice for a national motto. Just sayin'.

EDIT: I googled it. Oh god...

How about 'YAY YOU!' Then again, 'yay' is not a word in English either, so you may have to use 'Celebrate You' or something instead? :)

What The Blaatschapen quoted was apparently the chorus of a very disturbing song. Not even going to give a link to it, it just makes me gag.

If this is supposed to be some kind of a congratulation, I would use "Hyvä sinä!" (lit. trans. Good you!). I feel like that is the best way to put it although there is no word-to-word translation for it.

I don't mind at all! "Cathatiksen vapaat maat olkoot ikuisesti." To form a genetive, I had to inflect the name "Cathatis". I also added "olkoot" (shall be) to make it sound better.

My motto (per audacia ad astra) means "boldly going into space". How do we say that in Finnish?

I would use either of the following:

"Rohkeasti avaruuteen" ("Boldly into space", sounds the best to me out of these three. Also a direct translation from Latin.)
"Rohkeasti matkalla avaruuteen" ("Boldly on one's/our way into space")
"Rohkeasti menossa avaruuteen" (A word-to-word translation from English into Finnish, and it sounds a bit meh.)

"Kaaos", "järjestys" (as in the opposite of chaos), "totuus".
