What do embassies do?

What do embassies do? Sorry, I'm new and don't know much about this game. But it's awesome. So what do embassies do for regions?

When two regions accept embassies with one another they get a link to the other region on their regional page, underneath the World Factbook Entry. Some regions have extra metagame stuff attached them, but that's all they do in game.
