Once upon a time, in 2002, Max Barry launched NS. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

This, but was it really 2002? I could have sworn 2001.

The geopolitical climate is currently defined largely by the actions of The Brotherhood of Malice. After their resurgence in about 2022, I believe, they've ruffled a lot of feathers and served as Raiderdom while a lot of independent and unaligned regions have been pushed to "pick sides" by the actions and rhetoric of the Raider and Defender factions, respectively. Currently, The League and Concord are the most powerful (or perhaps just the most vocal) region in the Defender faction, although Defenders are largely unified militarily under Libcord. Most of the modern conflict centers around The North Pacific, after a delbump operation led by The Communist Bloc, which has been a close ally of BOM for a while. Due to this attack, all sorts of diplomatic sanctions have been enacted and wars have been declared. These wars have been mostly fought in vulnerable third party regions such as The Wellspring, Warzone Trinidad, and Solidarity. There's also been major controversies in the World Assembly, such as the repeal of Condemn Ever-Wandering Souls (a prominent BOM member), but those have not really been central to the balance of power overall. For a long time, Defenders have had pretty much unilateral power over the WA when they vote as a bloc, and that's not going to change for a while. Another important event/circumstance is the recent Frontiers/Strongholds update, which changed how User Created Regions can function mechanically. In order to allow nations to spawn in them, many regions have transitioned into Frontiers, but this makes them far more vulnerable. Temporarily, this led to the rise of the FOCUS bloc of independent Frontiers, but that has not seen much movement in recent time. It's most prominent within NSGP because it creates battlefields which can be won. Solidarity and The Wellspring, two targets in the major TNP-TCB war, were both frontiers. Strongholds are untouchable, but frontiers are vulnerable, and that has led to adapting playstyles on both sides -- Raider and Defender. All in all, I think it's fair enough to say that there's a strong degree of "polarization" on the R/D spectrum within NSGP. There's a LOT more to consider, like the Modern Gameplay Compact, the recent falling out of The Pacific with Europeia, the diplomatic isolation of Osiris in 2022, etc etc etc, but those are some of the broad strokes. And people more involved in the conflict can feel free to correct me on assumptions I may have made -- as an onlooker from neutral regions (despite having defender sympathies), I may not have the full picture.

It's the end of all that exist, when the world is covered in nuclear blasts, those few still surviving trying to block the nukes with shields.

It's a fun mini-game, where you can join a faction ans blast other factions to bits with nukes. Good fun.

Cormac was one of the most active and influential players of the 2010s and into the 2020s. It's hard to find even one battle from that time period they weren't in some way swept up in.

Cormac had a good understanding of people and a large circle of friends, I think. They switched regions and ideologies often, and were liable to blow up over even a small conflict. It was entertaining. One moment, you were friends with Cormac. The next, he was repealing your commendation. Or challenging your government position. Or staging a coup. Or defaming you in the NSGP Discord server. They were especially well-known for leaking private logs, often through The Miniluv Messenger.

They were active and interesting. But also a huge liability. Cormac did a suicide-by-mod a few years ago. Hence, the DoS.

It was still live when I clicked on it earlier. I'm assuming mods took it down for some reason.

I imagine that such grandiose and elaborate memorials dedicated to DOSes are prohibited by the explicit definition of the term Delete on Sight, or something, it is quite the mystery why it would be removed by moderation.

In the first TET volume Reploid Productions referenced an original version of The Eternal Thread, from 2003. Is there any more information on this?

I went to the Jolt archive to check, but apparently the first TET predated the Jolt forums, according to Reppy, it was purged at some point because it was killing NS's forum performance.

Gotcha covered! And yeah, a thousand-page thread did really start to break the old old forum software. :lol2: I suspect a 1,000 page thread would degrade the performance of THIS forum! (Hence the 500 page cap.)

Controversial regional politics and law

Postby His Excellency » Fri Mar 15, 2024 6:46 am

Hiya! I'm researching quite a few things about NS regional politics and law at the moment, so I have several enquiries.

Are there any examples (preferably ones with publicly accessible sources/documentation) of very controversial/contentious:
[*] Regional elections (not counting R/D as an election) that saw high public participation/high turnout/razor-thin vote margins, etc., and if so, what were the central issue(s) revolving around those elections?
[*] Bills/laws/constitutional amendments/motions and other votes (e.g. impeachment/vote of no confidence) that saw extensive legislative debate/razor-thin vote margins/took months or even years to pass?
[*] Regional court rulings (because the ruling was widely unpopular/the court was highly split/etc.)?

Any help will be appreciated and I thank you all in advance! :)
