Calling all NS Pianists

Postby Bergnovinaia » Sun Feb 27, 2011 9:46 pm

Hey,

So I play piano (quite well actually), but I am looking for some quick to learn pieces by next Thursday for a silent auction I have to perform at. So, I was wondering if the NS community of pianists knew any good quick ones I could learn that are somewhat light pieces (noting agressive like most of the pieces I already know (i.e. Sonatina in C Major, The Avalanche, etc.). Also, I was specifically looking for an Aladdin sheet music thing because some people want me to perform that... (I'm not sure why, but I guess that's a light piece.)

Anyhow, if you could provide with links to where I can get the sheet music (ideally free), that would be much appreciated.

Gracias!

It goes on in that fashion for another 482 pages or so. Your audience will undoubtedly be impressed.

More seriously, when in doubt I usually turn to The Well-Tempered Clavier, whose pieces range from "sightreadable at a glance" (e.g. Preludes and Fugues No. 2 in c and 13 in F# from I) to "requiring a few days' practice beforehand" (e.g. 20 in a from I and 18 in g# from II). This entirely depends on where your expertise lies though -- if you find baroque music hard to get through or simply prefer more modern stuff my suggestion would be of limited utility. Poking around IMSLP can be fun if you're familiar with enough composers, but disorienting if you're not; that said, if there's some other public domain author you're interested in, use the search bar.

I'm not sure where you'd find the Aladdin sheet music for free. It's still under copyright, and the distributors (whoever owns the rights to the soundtrack) will probably charge for it.

Maybe you could Romanian Folk Dances by Bela Bartok (Sz. 56, BB 68). They're six little vignettes of folk dances, and although I don't know how to play the piano, they sound like the sort of thing that sounds a lot harder to play than it actually is. I don't have a link to sheet music, though, sadly.

I love Bartok's RFD. Especially the movement, "La Cu Bata"

Well, I don't think I'll learn any of that in a couple of days considering the auction is super soon and I have to organize it too... :D

However, I did manage to learn Prelude in C major (a.k.a. Ave Maria) and The Entertainer in a couple of days so I'm throughly impressed with myself.

I think my biggest problem is that the pices I know how to play are kind of agressive... not light classical. I don't want to flip out any patrons at the auction.

You could always do a calm, simple lieder too, Schubert's Du Bist die Ruh or something of that sort comes to mind. Simple, and it sounds alright without the voice over top, if you just want it for some sort of gentle background music. Youtube video here.

I found Chopin's Prelude in E Minor easy to learn.

Gymnopedie (1st movement), by Erik Satie, is quite easy to learn, IMO.

It looks rather easy... but I definately need sheet music in order to function when playing a piece I don't hardly know. :D

Here you go:

http://www.8notes.com/scores/9765.asp

You can actually listen to the piece on that site too, although I usually play it at a considerably slower tempo.

IMSLP is my source for basically everything.

Chopin nocturnes are usually quick and easy to learn (at least for me) and they're nice and non-threatening.

Well, the good news is all the music I had was enough to last me for the duration I needed to play. Bad news, I didn't learn any of your pieces.

However, we are doing this again next year, so I'll try to learn them by then. :D
