The Williams Trophy RP/Roster Thread

Postby Colmark » Sat Feb 26, 2011 3:56 pm

Welcome to the first edition of The Williams Trophy!
The tournament has been the brainchild of Geoffry Williams, one of the great Colmarkian players of the 1970s. A fleet footed fly half, he was considered the greatest player of his generation in Colmark. However, with little in the way of international competition, he rarely got a chance to showcase his talent with the outside world, competing with the very best in the world. Sadly Mr. Williams died last year, and in his will he left the money for the tournament to be created, this is his legacy. 16 teams from across the world will do battle to determine who is the greatest rugby club in the world. Let battle commence!

There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Highmark City Irish are a social sports club in Highmark City, the capital of Quintessence of Dust. Formerly exclusively patronised by the families of Irish immigrants in the late nineteenth century, today the connection of most players to Ireland is pretty marginal. They don't even serve Guinness in the clubhouse. Home games will be played at the National Stadium of Sports, a large multisports venue in the centre of Highmark.

HCI's rugby team have international experience, having participated in two Rugby World Challenge Cups, losing most recently in the final to New Cleethorpes Deathshriek (also from Quintessence of Dust). Donegan and O'Brien have represented the country in the Rugby World Cup, and both played in the RWC15 final loss to Sorthern Northland, home of the only import on a team once brimming with foreign talent.

Donegan is the team's best all-round player and has in the past been considered the top scrum-half in the world, although he is getting on a bit. The traditional Quodite strength is the lineout game, which is certainly the case for HCI who have two top jumpers and an excellent hooker. Herz is an emerging presence in the back row, and Kater has good kicking from hand and ball skills, though his defence is suspect.

Posted on the In Brief section of the QBS wobsite.
Strong defensive showing sees HCI home

Highmark City Irish recorded a comfortable 24-3 opening day win at the National Stadium as they outscrummaged visitors Ruhstad Athletikk Veréjn. Allowing only three penalties, one of which was kicked for the Hakklanders' only points of the day, it was a solid defensive showing, while fullback Redmond Morris provided scoring impetus with a brace of second half tries. Tommy Donegan's penalty and an opportunistic loose ball break from Suibhne Fox accounted for the 10-3 lead at the half. Speaking afterwards, coach Oran Gill praised a "solid if unspectacular effort", saying that he was glad to have a win under his belt ahead of the first away game, a visit to Loonaterian to face the Weegee Junglecats, who went down 15-8 to Greenway Rangers.

    Tries: Fox, Morris (2)
    Conversions: Donegan (3)
    Penalties: Donegan

    Penalties: [Ruhstad kicker]

SOLID START FOR COLMARKIAN TEAMS

Both Fortnam and the Greenway Rangers got off to winning starts in front of their home fans in the Williams Trophy. Fortnam controlled their game versus the Raboso Rams, never quite breaking down a stern challenge but always looking like they were going to win. Marce Huin kicked three penalties for the visitors, but tries from Luke Claridge, who burst through the Ram's poor midfield defence, and Callum Babidge, who scored late on from a close range pick and drive proved to be the difference on the day, as Nicholas Wilkins added two penalties to further the lead and deny the Rams the consolation of a losing bonus point.

Greenway endured a tougher time against the Weegee Junglecats, who took an early 8-0 lead as torrential rain prevented any running rugby from developing. They gradually clawed their way back into the game through a powerful forwards display, and all of the Rangers points coming from the boot of the ever reliable Mike Ellis, who kicked 5 penalty goals as Greenway put up 15 unanswered second half points to secure a crucial victory.

Though a bad start to the tournament, losing 20-9, the Rams are sure to come back and win there next game. Hopes are up that the defense will be much better than the last game. The Rams have hopefully learned from their games and will destroy their opponent. Look out, the Rams are here!

HCI recover from nervy half to win

A late try sealed a valuable second round win away from home for Highmark City Irish after trailing 10-9 at half-time. The Irish were held without a try as tough defence from the Weegee Junglecats limited their phases, and an attacking break that saw both centres go for the ball carrier left the Weegee stand off free to run in a try untouched. Tommy Donegan's penalty kicking kept them within touching distance, and after late drop goal attempts were missed, Seamus O'Brien came off the bench to spark a famous win, gathering a cross-field kick into the wind from Donegan and haring in for the game winning try.

    Tries: O'Brien
    Conversions: Donegan
    Penalties: Donegan (3)

    Tries: [Weegee fly-half]
    Conversion: [Ruhstad kicker]
    Penalties: [Ruhstad kicker]

Defensive rugby continues to be the order of the day as Motligurpup Pasgarmises win their second match of three in the Williams Trophy club competition in Colmark. First five Rura Rige kicked her fifth penalty of the competition and centre Trara Tupo scored the only try of the match in an 8-3 decision over Rugby Klub av Himmelstad.

The Matimar representatives won their first match 13-3 over Ginto RFC (try Tlisa Roso; conversion and 2x penalty Rura Rige) and narrowly dropped their second 6-10 to Storvansten Sharks (2x penalty Rura Rige).

Three more matches remain in the group stage, with two of the four clubs in each group advancing to the knockout stage. With three of the four clubs in Pasgarmises' group having won two of three in the first leg qualification is still very much up for grabs.
Our number script: 0=O, 00=U, 1=L, 2=R, 3=E, 33=I, 4=A, 5=S, 6=G, 7=T, 8=M, 9=P

Highmark City Irish 3 - 8 Greenway Rangers
Ruhstad Athletikk Veréjn 5 - 3 Weegee Junglecats

Innsbruck Green-and-Yellow 5 - 13 Mygevia RFC
New Amsterdam Warriors 23 - 11 Jasmuur Ospreys

Tables:

A
Fortnam RFC 17
Raboso Rams 12
Torday Titans 5
Jacksonville Tigers 1

The situation: Fortnam have qualified for the knockout stages, though must win their next game to guarantee top spot. Raboso need one more win to qualify, and Torday will require two bonus point wins to stand a chance.

B
Motligurup 13
Ginto RFC 12
Storvansten 8
Himmelstad 2

The situation: Very, very even! Motligurup have their destiny in their own hands, and the group winner may well be decided in a winner takes all showdown on the final matchday between Ginto and Motligurup. If Storvansten beat Motligurup in the next game, it becomes very interesting!
C
Highmark 13
Greenway 12
Weegee 7
Ruhstad 5

The situation: Greenway's defeat of Highmark has opened this group up and kept Weegee in with a chance of qualifying. The Junglecats have to play both Highmark and Greenway, so it will be tough, but it certainly gives them a bit of control over their destiny.

D
New Amsterdam 16
Mygevia 10
Jasmuur Ospreys 6
Innsbruck 3

The situation: All four teams can still qualify, though Innsbruck's chances are very slim. Jasmuur travel there in the next round and will need a big win to get themselves up into the qualifying positions, assuming Mygevia don't turn over New Amsterdam, which would make the final round very interesting indeed.

It is certainly all to play for in the last two rounds, your RPs may make the difference!

OOC: In general, these results seem very low scoring. If possible, I would like to adjust HCI's style modifier to 3.

OOC: Thats fine, and yes I have noticed that, the scorinator I'm using isn't perfect in that regard but is extremely simple to use for someone who is hosting their first tournament.

OOC: I would like to change the Rams modifier to 3.5. They have been practicing, and have gotten much better. Oh, and I need to change the roster. I need to replace Ray Hightower with Salty Holer. Thanks.

A change-of-pace display of boisterous offense followed by a rough outing have left Motligurpup Pasgarmises on the bubble in the Williams Trophy club competition in Colmark.

Pasgarmises looked to be taking command of their group after a 35-6 trouncing of Rugby Klub av Himmelstad in the fourth round. Tries from Tlisa Roso and Poga Logo were augmented by two conversions, five penalties, and one dropped-kick goal from Rura Rige. Unfortunately, Storvansten Sharks solved a normally tight defense and beat Pasgarmises for the second time by 20-11 in the fifth round. Rura hit two penalties, and number eight Puplesa Talo scored the only try just before the half. But a missed conversion cost Pasgarmises a critical bonus point in the standing with the loss by nine instead of seven.

This leaves the qualifying group too close to call, with three clubs nearly deadlocked for two advancements. Although our national representatives did beat their sixth-round foes Ginto RFC by 10 in an earlier match, with everything on the line all bets are off.
Our number script: 0=O, 00=U, 1=L, 2=R, 3=E, 33=I, 4=A, 5=S, 6=G, 7=T, 8=M, 9=P
(Of course, it's still a constructed language...)

Both of Colmark's representatives in the Williams Trophy have progressed to the knockout stages. Fortnam confirmed their position as number 1 seed with a high scoring win away in Raboso. Both sides looked to throw the ball around as Raboso raced into half time at 20-3 up. Stern words were heard in the dressing room and Nicholas Wilkins lit up the pitch, and Raboso responded by giving away penalty after penalty, with 5 kicked by Wilkins to close much of the deficit. The referee lost patience and produced three yellow cards, and this period of the game, between 55 and 70 minutes Raboso played with at least one man off the pitch, and Claridge, Farmer and Williams exploited the space to burst through for a try each. A fantastic comeback and the teams will meet again in Fortnam for the quarter finals.

Greenway Rangers made heavy weather of dispatching a determined Weegee Junglecats side, as despite dominating possession and territory, they struggled to break down a hard working opposition away from home. Three penalties from the boot of the ever reliable Mike Ellis kept Greenway in the lead, before Weegee scored on the stroke of half time. This would be the last score until 75 minutes were on the clock, as Greenway inexplicably managed to avoid scoring before Adam Harbaugh crashed over from close range to retake the lead. They will travel to Motligurup in the next round.
