Welfare States

Postby Genivar » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:30 am

This topic is about Social Democracies. Also called by conservatives as a Welfare State *gasp*.
What do you think of them? Does higher taxation= higher standard of living and is it worth it?

seems like an excellent thing to me.

like anything else im sure it needs to be tweaked now and then to keep people from taking unfair advantage or to make sure that the people on the bottom dont sink too low.

Higher taxation doesn't equal higher standard of living, more services equals higher standard of living and requires higher taxes to support them. And from my point of views it's worth it.

Welfare is a safety net which provides for the needs of the poor. Welfare is necessary to bring fairness to American economic life. It is a device for protecting the poor.

Opportunities should be provided to make it possible for those in need to become self-reliant. It is far more compassionate and effective to encourage people to become self-reliant, rather than allowing them to remain dependent on the government for provisions.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themsleves

If we must have capitalism, then it should take the form of a welfare state.

Agreed. I think Jesse Ventura said it best, *Welfare was meant as a safety net, not a hammock*

Aye. What would you consider a "safety net" and what would you consider a "hammock"?

As I said before, I think its immoral for people to have to pay simply to exist. they should be guaranteed a minimum standard of living and if they want more they'd have to earn it.
