Which modern cult is most dangerous?

Postby Banold » Wed Feb 16, 2011 10:34 pm

I think these groups are the largest religious movements, which are also considered cults by many governments, and I'd like to know which one you find most dangerous, if at all.

To a degree, all these groups have at least some claim to legitimacy and indeed many loyal followers. But are they dangerous, and to what capacity? Is their threat to society covert or open? Blatant or not so obvious?

Have you ever been involved with any of these cults? Or have you protested against one or more of them?

Ever spoken or had extensive dealings (business, school, friends, relatives) with people who belong to these religions? Were they reasonable and easy to deal with or out of touch with reality and loony?
When you buy into something that seems to explain everything, you can soon be coaxed into doing almost anything.

I'd have to go with Scientology. Scientology has been linked to some questionable deaths.

Link 1

The most famous one of course is The Death of Lisa McPherson

All of them are cults, but only Scientology is also a pyramid scheme that infiltrated the IRS and other government agencies.

It would be narrow to say Islam. Specifically the Twelver Sect of Islam though...Those bastards are mental; hands down blooming raging insane. Death Cult dedicated to bringing about the end of the world through violence. Obviously the most dangerous.

What's wrong with Hillsong? What makes them a cult or even dangerous?

They're pentecoastal according to wiki, and while that group maybe a bit colorful at times, other then speaking in tongues, how is that particular church dangerous from any other in Australia?

Oh, and the Gospel isn't crap my friend. I get that it's a matter of opinion, but I'd like to talk about dangerous religious movements or cults. There's nothing dangerous about the Gospel of the New Testament.

Sorry, but I cannot respect any church which asks people to pay a certain percentage of their income to be allowed to attend. That, my friend, is not a church but instead a corporation.

Gotchya, I agree. I attend an independent Baptist Church, and it doesn't coerce the faithful into tithing or donating ever. People give what they can when they want. The way it should be.

As I understand it, doesn't the mainstream LDS church require a 10% tithe from all income earning members?

i'd say it's a toss up between christianity and islam. all of the dangerous charicteristics of a 'cult' are present there. and a thousand years or two is still "modern" in the context of the tens of thousands of years of the human species, the millions of life, some of it possibly sentient or near sentient, and so on.

and most, because most popular and at the same time most denied of their cultish enslavement of emotional attachment.

now i'm not saying anything negative about either of their revealers, nor the one same god who chose them (along with all the others, like buddah, krshna, et al) to be channeled by,
but rather, what their modern day so called followers have to a very large degree, turned their revelations into.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"

Pound for pound, Scientology, since its official church is a nasty SOB and all ST's support it. Not all Catholics support the Catholic Church, so that gets a by, as do most of the other cults due to similar diversity.
