If the USA had to lose a state, which one would you rather it be? And who would you rather we lose it to?

I'm not American, but I'd say lose Hawaii, make it independent.

You'd, of course, get an excuse to expel Obama early, and it isn't like Hawaii actually does anything with its statehood.

California. At least it could survive as an independent country.

Alaska, for the sake of geographical completeness.

Hawaii.

Its ecenomically unfeasible. As for military purposes you only really need to keep a couple of islands or use allies such as Austrlia or New Zealand or the increasinly friendly South Korea and Japan. There is increasingly little point to spend money on thoes unstable and isolated islands.
One persons freedom is always at the expense of another. There are these dam laws in this country of mine preventing me from saying "hi" to my neighbour with a baseball bat. All I want to do is have my freedom of expression so he looses his freedom of movement.

It worth keeping just for that.

Surely Florida, that place is just weird, looks like a penis and, let's face it, mostly old people anyway.

Those greedy Canadians will keep wanting more! Next thing you know you'll be handing New York or DC over to them. If you're that worried about geographical completeness then take over Canada! Long Live America! :p

Vermont. It has one of the most vibrant separatist organizations.

Another feasible choice would be South Carolina or Texas (my personal fav). All three nations enjoy a healthy amount of natural resources and collective will toward self-governance that would ensure their vitality in a world of competitive nations.

Losing Texas, California, New Mexico, or Alaska would probably be the best ones to lose (if we had to lose one) in terms of post-separation survival - since each case would probably involve a fairly rapid assimilation into another culture.

Other than that, cutting out most of the other states as individuals, would probably kill the state in question, in most cases. Good for the Union, perhaps - not so hot for the state.

(Is Australian who doesn't know what is and isn't an American state)

How about Northern Marian Island, Guam, Wake Island or those other pacific islands?

If I had to choose a real state and not an unincorporated territory alaska seems like a sound choice. Canada would look nicer with it.
"The sovereign represents the state; he and his people form but one body, which can only be happy as far as united by concord. The prince is to a nation he governs, what a head is to a man; it is his duty to see, think and act for the whole community, that he may procure it every advantage of which it is capable."-Friedrich der Große

Hawaii.

I doubt Canada would even consider to take over Alaska.
