Mostly nomadic peoples, and where we live is hot. So we have compound bows and usually on horseback. We have short shields with those. Foot archers here are literally non-existant. Artillery is a light batillista with horse travel to move fast.

My strategy would to harass the others. I works really well, especially with hit and run tactics. I set up my batillas, pack them up, and then repeat. I use the batillas for the heavily armored troops. After we've killed and scattered them, my lightly armored troops with sickles and daggers will swoop in out of the sands. We also used light calvalry. They have curved swords and shields.

The thing about throwing swords, is that their heavy, cumbersome, and take a lot of skill of use. A bow and crossbow are easier to use. You could use javelins which have more armor piercing.

Indeed, we don't actually carry them ourselves until battle. We have a peasant do that, as you kinda need assistance in drawing the bloody thing out.

Ah, and should any knight or warrior use a blade of such girth, it would be so. As only can be true, Throwing Swords would be shy of such immense length, though the nether of their blades would thicken in weight so they may be thrown with force. Quite a difference exists, 'tween the blade of a warrior and those which he lobs.

How fun.You leave yourselves wide open for arrow, crossbow, and balistia, and trebuchet barrages along with eliminating any proper formations! Zwiehanders were specialized units for a reason!

Indeed, the Zweihander is made to break formations.

And advancing in open order, projectiles are made even more useless.

Simple negative space is no match for the wide, rotating spin of the Throwing Sword!

The Strategy of the Pre-Gunpowder Merchant Republics was generally to place a thick line of melee soldiers in front of the enemy lines and insult their manhood until they attack us, if that doesn't lead them straight into combat, then we begin with the archers, particularly horse archers harassing the enemy lines, if they still refuse to face us, we send in the armed cataphracts to beat them senseless. After which if they still refuse to advance our men will have little trouble disposing of the petty few uninjured men left willing to fight us.

Once you fire out those crossbows, you're gonna have an awefully quiet 45 seconds of his guys charging you, and by the time you can actually fire the ballista, you won't have enough head left on your shoulders to keep a brain in.

Peoples of the northern areas of Greater Rhodes used a lighter, smaller composite recurve bow, as the majority of archers were trained on horseback. In the south, where the foot-soldier was the most important aspect of the army, a larger, straighter longbow made out of yew or ash, with a silk or hemp bowstring was favoured. Both areas also employed javelins until the late medieval period as well.

As for pre-gunpowder artillery, most warring states of Greater Rhodes used the ballista, and for sieges on a larger scale the counterweight trebuchet.

That why my crossbowmen run right after firing into their lines. Also the ballista men and trebuchet are naturally placed in the rear. Their not front line tools, ballistas and trebuchet don't need to be.

My meele trrops consist of smart militia, each of them knowing the local landscape. They are camoed until called, when they shift out of the sands and cut down whoever's left. My portable batillas are on chariots. My light calvalry chase em' down.
Roman and other troops that ivade our country call them sand shifters.
