BEST Leaders

Postby Verdeguay » Fri Jan 14, 2011 7:01 pm

Who, in your opinion, were the best (or least bad, if you're an anarchist and/or dislike them all) world leaders (heads of state and/or heads of government) of all time? Fictional leaders don't count.

I think the least bad ones were José Figueres Ferrer, Seretse Khama, Rómulo Betancourt, Mohammad Mossadegh, and William Henry Harrison.

Justinian has my vote. When the Muslims took Constaninople they left his portrait on the Hagia Sofia. They don't usually allow portraits in their places of worship.

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Friedrich II von Preußen, Frederick I Barbarossa, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, Gustav II Adolf, Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck... probably a few more that don't immediately come to mind. Though I don't know what qualifies as a world leader, all were the heads of very influencial nation states.

Queen Victoria wasn't too bad. Neither was Elizabeth I. Both saw their country through a time of golden achievement and motivated people and the such like.

Ashoka the Great. Killed tons of people, regretted it, converted to Buddhism, rejected violence entirely, built a ton of hospitals and waterways and schools, instituted public education (for women as well), completely devoted himself to his people, and was all in all a great king.

Attlee. Despite inheriting a financial position significantly worse than the current one in Britain, he reduced the deficit while at the same time creating the modern welfare state. Can't really fault the postwar government.

William Henry Harrison.

And if you can formulate a reason why he wasn't a great leader, you have an abnormal understanding of history.

Norman Borlaug. He is started and led the Green Revolution and is the single greatest person to have ever lived. End of story.

Margaret Thatcher
Winston Churchill
Oda Nobunaga
Tokugawa Ieyasu
FDR
Gaius Julius Caesar
Duke of Wellington
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

I'll probably add more later.

Deng Xiaoping deserves a mention. There was the Tianenmen Square tragedy, true, but his policies were the most directly responsible in China's reversal of fortune. Also, I tend to identify with leaders who stress pragmatism over ideology.

Oh and Henry V, if anything Shakespeare wrote about him was true.
