I was wondering if anyone can recommend any good (academic) books that explore the historical and cultural roots of Islamic dress codes for women and that discuss their causes and effects, whether that be in terms of psychology, anthropology, sociology, politics, etc. I am interested in what gender/women's studies has to say but ultimately I am looking for a broader discussion that includes the male standpoint and goes beyond the individual to consider relationships, family and society.
I want the advantages and disadvantages to be presented and explored - I am not looking for a defence or an attack and I do not want the rigour of the analysis to be undermined by prejudice or political correctness.
Any ideas?
