Yes, I support capitalism mixed with a little "socialism" (which are general welfare). I think I mentioned that in the first few pages.

lets be clear neither socialism nor communism works, communism lacks incentive, capitalism lack restraint, one leads to a caste system while the other leads to endless poverty. all the successful happy countries use a combination of both called a mixed economy, if you can find an exemption to that rule I, and many others on both sides would love to hear it.

http://www.oxfam.org.uk/resources/ukpov ... ts2010.pdf

If you want to believe Oxfam, they think that more than one in five people live in poverty, because measure poverty from the average age that you'll die, to the chances of getting a job.To be honest I think this is going too far; life expectancy depends on healthcare and diet and excercise etc. Now whilst the UK uses the NHS they still haven't gone far enough to limiting peoples' diets and excercise plans. Chances of getting a job also depend on things. It may depend on where a person lives which is unfortunate, but it seems there are other factors such as your qualifications, which since the UK has state schooling, the population should be well educated and have qualifications. If parents allow their kids to play truant at school and not get qualifications, or even if a kid has special needs and simply can't be as intelligent as others, can we blame society?

Reading the article, it begs the question- what is the NHS not providing for poorer people to still be so much more likely to cntract physical, mental and chronic illness, and what is a state education system still not providing.

I'd like to see their statistics for the USA, I'm not sure they'll be better.

Oh have you also heard Milton Friedmans speech on why government policies meant for the poor actually don't benefit them but the middle classes because of Directors law. Ok obviously the poster is probably biased but that makes no difference to the video itself.

My question is to what extent can you call inequality unjust? What you can call simply an 'unfortunate' inequality between two people, or a conscious act which goes against the individuals progression, regardless of the aid available?

1. I didn't call inequality unjust.
inequality will always exist in a species with variability.
we can however create a minim level of quality that is very, very difficult to fall below without abandoning the idea of personal gain. If everyone has access to food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, education and healthcare, not only does it help create that minimum level but also promotes success and personal ambition by allowing a safety net for aspiring entrepreneurship, so if they fail instead of starvation, homelessness and death on the street they just end up with a crappy apartment and working at MC Donalds, if they succeed they still stand to gain a great deal, thus making people more able/likely to attempt new ideas, thus fostering creativity, inventiveness, new markets, and technological advancement.

3. again "all the successful happy countries use a combination of both called a mixed economy, if you can find an exemption to that rule I, and many others on both sides would love to hear it."
an exemption is not an unhappy unsuccessful country with a mixed economy, an exemption would be a successful happy country with something other than a mixed economy.
I think we risk becoming the best informed society that has ever died of ignorance. ~Reuben Blades

I got quite annoyed after the Haiti earthquake. A baby was taken from the wreckage and people said it was a miracle. It would have been a miracle had God stopped the earthquake. More wonderful was that a load of evolved monkeys got together to save the life of a child that wasn't theirs. ~Terry Pratchett

there's never been an economic/ideology that wasn't an excuse for tyranny, and probably never will be. capitolism is certainly no exception.
infrastructure NEEDS 'socialism' and nations need infrastructure as one of the only two ligitimate excuses for them to exist at all.
capitolism has been good for innovation, up to a point, but we've reached that point, where monopolistic greed has come to be in direct conflict with taking its most vital next steps.

i say mixed, and not just those two, but the infinite variety of reality, to address optimally the equally infinite variety of contexts.
too often ideological prejudice is the excuse for not fixing what really is broken.

replacing one economic ideology with another is more replacing the names of excuses then of actually accomplishing anything.
when what is really needed is to forget the excuses of ideologies and optimally address real issues in an honest, logical and appropriate manor.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

"economic freedom" is "the cake"

While I agree with your overall post about folks not knowing what Capitalism/Socialism are and both having pros and cons- I found a few ignorant statements in there such as this one. (No offense!)

Capitalism allows a man to have essentially unlimited earning potential. What he works for, that's what he will get. The negative side to this would be that greedy corporations can create monopolies and drive the smaller man out of business. Another "negative" side would be that if a man doesn't want to work (i.e. lazy) he won't earn as much as a hard working individual. However, as a person who believes in the consequences of their actions (good or bad) and a business owner, I favor capitalism in economics.

Socialism while being regarded as more humanistic, relies on heavy taxation to foot the communities expenses. Something you must know about America/Americans is that our country was essentially founded on the belief that certain taxation was a violation of basic human rights. My how far we've strayed from our founding belief!

Why is it that most people on these forums do not realize Communism and Socialism are the same thing, and where used interchangeably by many Communist writers?

Communism is not inherently evil, and what is now called Stalinism should not ever be held up to the same light as Communism. For the simple basis, the very deciding factor of Communism is that the workers' are supposed to control the means of production. The CPSU controlled everything from the top down, and laid out five-year plans for all economic goals in the following years. This in itself goes against what Communism is, and what it stands for, and really needs to stop being referenced with what the USSR was.

The USSR went inherently against the people, not for them.

There's also the thing that in capitalism, some people are dealt better cards to begin with. Poor people won't be able to afford education, so no matter how clever they are, they end up flipping burgers. And someone might be lazy and dumb but just lucky enough to have a rich daddy.

Industrial Republics wrote:Why is it that most people on these forums do not realize Communism and Socialism are the same thing, and where used interchangeably by many Communist writers?

While they have a lot in common, no, they are not the same thing. Communism is essentially anarchism in it's marxist meaning.

Socialism originally meant any idea that was focused on solving "the labor problem" through radical changes in the capitalist economy. Benjamin Tucker who was a prominent free market anarchist called himself a socialist. Socialism wasn't used interchangeably with communism until Marx came along.

Just to clarify, this is what I meant when I posted that. Simply because most people who claim to be Communism base their ideas of Marx and Engels, as well as others who based their ideals off of their writings. I'm not saying they're the same thing, as both have basis in other meanings, and aren't "exactly" the same thing.

Excellent post OP. So, it's either "but I want my cerulean car with ivory leather" and risk wasteful death? Or, "okay, I might have to enter a controlled-market every now-and-then, but at least my economic future is clear and my children aren't starving." What is one of the worst things in the Universe? Money; and the threats of mind and of body that it can influence. Removing these worries is but one of the benefits of progressiveness--crime; economics, etc..--Why benefit the few when one can benefit millions more with the same resources? To give to people who need--and who will spend--more than others who will more than likely just nest it for themselves. Anything to not relapse to a lazy, frightened Wild-West. Civilisation is about collective priorities-making. And so my Nation agrees with a mixed-approach, yes, if only for that-approach's-tendency to ameliorate political freedoms with economic ones.
