Christchurch NZ hit by major quake

Postby Daistallia 2104 » Fri Sep 03, 2010 1:50 pm

Reports coming in now...
Christchurch has been left devastated after a massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck 30km west of the city at 4.35am this morning.

The quake was at a depth of 33km and was centred near Darfield, and has left large parts of the area without power, water or telephones.

Roads have been blocked by debris after the several buildings collapsed onto the streets, leaving their interiors visible and the central city resembling a war zone.

Large groups of onlookers have gathered to survey the damage and take pictures with their cameras and mobile phones.

Several large aftershocks have already struck the region, and wardens dressed in high-visibility gear are asking people to stay well clear of buildings because of the high risk of further collapses.

Traffic lights are still not working in several places around the central city, creating gridlock as the traffic flow increases.

Looters are hitting central Christchurch after a devastating earthquake hit the city early this morning.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck about 30km west of Christchurch at 4.35am today, at a depth of 10km, causing minor injuries, structural damage and gas leaks, cutting power, and rupturing water and sewerage mains.

At least 20 roads had been damaged and some were impassable.

Inspector Mike Coleman said police had cordoned off central Christchurch as it was dangerous but also because looters had already been active.

"There's considerable damage there, and we've already had reports of looting," he told Radio New Zealand.

Id say lets offer aid but seeing as they backed out of that alliance with the US and AUS in the 70's i do not think it is right to send aid.

I'm pretty sure New Zealand is economically stable enough to handle the problem themselves anyway.

I've been watching the news about it for the last few hours and luckily no one has been killed yet, some unlucky guy had a chimney fall on him though.

Its apparently as strong a Haiti, but Christchurch has must more robust infrastructure and those tight ass building rules seemed to have paid off.

I live in Christchurch, so was woken by it at about 4:35 in the morning. Power and water were cut off, so we had breakfast in the dark. The power came back on after a few hours, at about 8:50am at our place, but water is still iffy. The earthquake was originally reported as magnitude 7.4, but that was revised to 7.1 later on. No damage to our house (luckily) but damage was done to various buildings, etc. especially in the CBD (plenty of old brick buildings), so a lot of the CBD has been closed, as well as the airport. Some areas have burst water and sewage pipes, and some of those areas have been evacuated. There are still aftershocks, which could continue for a while, but they've weakened (strongest was magnitude 5.2 or so, a couple of hours ago).

I live here in New Zealand, up in Auckland. My condolences to the people of Christchurch, let's jut be very happy that the damage is not as great as other earthquakes of this size and nor is the death.

To those wondering, no-one has been reported dead, though there are a couple of serious injuries. The news is constantly on, an all day bulletin, so I'll let anyone know. It's interesting to see that this has made world news headlines.

It's not to bad here in Christchurch, most damage seems to be chimneys collapsing, although i saw a group of stores that had fallen apart, rubble was all over the street. The worst bit was probably losing power for about 5 hours. Although most houses including mine have a slight lean now.

I seem to have weathered the quake with no damage whatsoever, except for temporary loss of power and internet. I'm not sure what the state of the water and sewage are here - water is coming out of the taps, and waste products are getting flushed away, but where from and where to I don't know. The river is a bit murkier than usual as a result of stirred-up sediment.

Mainly I just wish these damned aftershocks would STFU and die. They're annoying as all hell.

I'm watching. Another devastating story - a plane crash in the Fox Glacier killed 9 people at 1.30 this afternoon. A bad day for the South Island.

A relief to hear from our NZ folks checking in safe!

And Tsar, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you can probably expect to be bouncing from aftershocks for the next several months. :P

And they said they expect there to be an aftershock just as, if not more powerful, than the initial earthquake. Sucks to be in Christchurch :( :p
