As the average voter has the attention span of the common housefly, a recession is merely bad news for the incumbent. In 2008, people hated the Republicans because Bush was in office when the crisis happened. In 2012, the same people may hate the Democrats because they haven't managed to clean up the mess yet.

Well, in both cases the parties failed to live up to their principles or the expectations they built up in voters so it's understandable. Politics is by its nature pretty short-lived; unless a party really, really does a lot of good things and sticks to its principles, it'll be kicked out of office as soon as possible.
