Corporations demanding political speech

Postby Nova Gothica » Thu Jul 09, 2009 4:06 am

Just a heads up, if you try to tighten the rules on corporate donations, you see a much more serious, and perhaps unplanned, issue result:

6 hours ago: Following new legislation in FlagNova Gothica, political parties are banned from advertising and receiving private donations.

Either corporations can donate massive donations or no one can give any money.

That's the textual effect for option #2 of issue #17: "Corporations Demand Political Say."

You chose as option: "You say political freedom, I hear vote-buying," says popular anarchist @@RANDOMNAME@@. "If these fat cats get their way, politicians will buy their own seat in Congress. And let's face it, a slick advertising campaign can convince a lot of apathetic voters. We need to tighten the laws, not repeal them. Money should have no place in politics!"

Note how it refers to "a slick advertising campaign", just before it mentions tightening laws. So, IMHO, the ban on advertising by political parties isn't a real surprise.

BTW, other issues will have far more surprising effects (trampling kittens, anyone?) and I suggest against posting them. It's more fun to be surprised by the effects, IMHO.

That got me by surprise, too >:( Equating corporate financing with private donations and even party advertising?! I expected a sophisticated political simulation, but implicit concepts like "Either you are for corporations funding political parties or you are totally against democracy!" are outright ridiculous. I understand and appreciate it when the fictitious spokesmen bring such arguments, but it disappoints me to see that the user/mod behind this issue actually thinks that way and is even able to implement his ideology in the game mechanics.

And no, it is not "fun" to be surprised by nonsensical results. That is like getting the note "Following a new legislation against tax raises, abortions are now illegal and punishable by death." If that happened, it would be strong evidence for me that the author of the issue wants to force his attitude down my throat. By passing legislations for my nation that I would have never made.

So why not spare me the fake choice altogether and just inform me that someone else has changed the policy for my country? That would be just as frustrating as misleading me, but at least more honest... :eyebrow:
