Which country should I move to?

Postby Seleucas » Wed Jul 21, 2010 9:22 pm

For reasons I don't want to share, I have been thinking lately of moving from the United States to another country not to return. One of my grandparents was French, and I think another had English citizenship, so I think this qualifies me for EU citizenship. I also speak Spanish, so that would be a whole slate of countries I could live in. I would be happy to learn another language, so I would consider another country outside of anything included under the previous criteria. (Nothing overly cold, though.) Any suggestions, NSGeneral?

Dealing with a banking crisis was difficult enough, but at least there were public-sector balance sheets on to which the problems could be moved. Once you move into sovereign debt, there is no answer; there’s no backstop.

Kind of hard to say, it you won't say why. I mean, if you want to be a pirate, I hear Somalia is nice. On the other hand, if you want to start a vineyard, Italy or France or Spain. If you like haggis, Scotland. I forget when lutefisk season is in Norway.

It depends on what you'd prefer, really. If you get British or another Commonwealth citizenship, you can easily move between any of the Commonwealth nations, as (At least this is from what I remember) most of the nations within it have greatly simplified immigration and passport for Commonwealth citizens.

It's not that massively different in Europe. You could probably get the same effect just by moving somewhere else in the US.

But if you really want a change I recommend the Central African Republic or Saudi Arabia.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

Kind of hard to say, it you won't say why. I mean, if you want to be a pirate, I hear Somalia is nice. On the other hand, if you want to start a vineyard, Italy or France or Spain. If you like haggis, Scotland. I forget when lutefisk season is in Norway.

Well, now that there have been a few posts made, I think I can avoid a knee-jerk reaction that I would have received if I had stated my reasons for wanting to go. I am quite certain that the US is going to experience another economic hit a la Weimar Germany, and I have a feeling it will be bad enough to create a push towards authoritarianism. I do not want to be around when this happens. Therefore, I would like to find some other country I could live in that I would be able to make a living in as someone with skill in finance.

Political ideology of said country is not that much of a concern, though I understand that Switzerland and Ireland are probably more capitalist than the US.

In this case since he hasn't given a compelling reason to move, its simply much simpler to stay put.

I'd say move to Thailand, low cost of living, hot chicks, good food, it won't ever be too cold and you can purchase whatever you need.

Back when SatireWire was still going, they had a story on a host of evil countries being a little miffed at being left out of the then newly created 'Axis of Evil', so they were forming their own Axis of... to the extent that all countries were piling in on the trend,

The final line was something like 'Authorities are looking into the recently proposed Axis of Guays stating that while they have no serious concerns about Uruguay and Paraguay, Chadguay required further investigation.'

Well, it was funny at the time,

Hot damn, I actually found it; http://www.satirewire.com/news/jan02/axis.shtml

With the criteria suddenly expanded and all the desirable clubs filling up, Sierra Leone, El Salvador, and Rwanda applied to be called the Axis of Countries That Aren't the Worst But Certainly Won't Be Asked to Host the Olympics
