XIS Triton, Wuin System, Year of Our Lord Emperor Foxfire Rose Seventeen, Death of the Life Season...

Having settled into orbit over the ruddy-peach orb that was the planet Wuin, the Xiscapian Imperial Starship Triton came alive with gleaming darts like silver remora fleeing the cover of an impossibly massive shark, small craft deploying from the Nova Carrier with all the silent grace of seeds on the wind. They were not the curved shapes of fighters angling in for battle, however, but the tri-winged shuttles and rounded hulls of drop ships carrying crew on leave and transfer down to the planet. Nearby, the shapes of the Xiscapian Wuin Defense Fleet glimmered in the darkness where the sun hit them, all smaller than the gigantic Triton, maintaining vigil over the system. Elsewhere, well outside the range of the naked eye, groups of weapons platforms hibernated, FTLi arrays hummed on standby and lonely automated sensor stations transmitted their never-ending readings of what lay in the system and beyond. Not too far away, the Alversian holding in the system was visible only as a distant false star, and around it, invisible, prowled a People's Fleet, similarly watchful.

As this hinted at, peace on the planets and in the blackness of space was deceptive. The Korr Wars had ended more than a decade ago, the Calaverians had been defeated and were now firmly under the thumb of the Kitsune Empire, the SASM had been obliterated, the False Rebellion crushed and the Alliance of Imitated Worlds was no more, but the Kitsune Empire still had enemies in the form of the Intergalactic Empire of Greal. Mere weeks previously a ragtag fleet from the Zillar Republic had assaulted this very system, driven across the galaxy by Greali expansionist designs, and though the only losses the Xiscapians and their Alversian allies had incurred came from downed fighters, the most painful death had occurred after the battle. The kitsune diplomat who had been sent to attempt to negotiate with the Zillars, Ambassador Atox, was callously murdered by a Greali Admiral, and the two nations had very nearly come to blows over the matter. Across the Kitsune Empire mothballed ships were once more being pulled from their hangers, fleets were being formed, armies were assembling, weapons were being manufactured and new recruits, infuriated by the Greali actions, were signing up for the Grand Army, and in particular the Imperial Navy, in droves.

The Triton had come to the Wuin System because the Carrier that had previously been a part of the garrison III Fleet, the Strong, had been ordered to travel to Xiscapia in order to replace lost fighters and crew and undergo repairs in a system not quite as exposed as Wuin, though it could hardly be called vulnerable. The Triton, from the IX Fleet, had been one of those ships that had been mothballed, and was moving in to act as a stopgap for the Strong in case the Zillars attacked again...or more likely, the Greali made an assault. Her crew, also having been called up from the Naval Reserves, were generally inexperienced, with the notable exception of her Master and Commander, one Captain Yukio. The mood aboard, as well as on the planet, was one of cautious optimism mixed with trepidation. The kitsune were confident they could meet the Greali in battle, but no one was especially eager to do so.

On the starboard side of the Carrier Commander Matsuyama stepped into a hanger bay, tail swishing behind him, and stared. Searching orange eyes gazed up at the sight before him behind an elongated snout, one off-white furred hand coming up to brush coal-colored hair veined with blonde, the lanky kitsune eying what was to be his new command. As with all Nova Carriers, the Triton held aboard her as standard compliment ten Destructor class Corvettes, three situated on the beam of the ship, three directly opposite on the other side, two along the starboard hull and two on the port. Each vessel was held within a mind-boggling huge armored blister that concealed a hanger bay to hold the two hundred meter Strike Ships, which would actually rotate ninety degrees to launch the corvette, and similarly open to receive it. Matsuyama was currently standing inside Starboard Hanger Two, home of the corvette Imperial-10.

A fine example of Xiscapian engineering, the Destructor class Corvette had the long, rounded shape with a relatively simple superstructure that both eased mass-production and made the relatively small craft very tough. Bearing twin Nakamoto Dockyards Kessel Engines, the ship was swift and carried aboard a large number of counter-thrusters that enabled it to pull off tricky maneuvers and put itself into different firing positions quickly, sort of like an oversized, ridiculously heavily armed fighter. A large "tower" atop it appeared to be a command center with a pair of humongous fuel cells attached; in fact, it was a ruse to trick an opponent into firing on the structure, and housed only a small observation platform with an attached beacon made specifically to attract homing missiles, designed to be able to take a crippling amount of damage without debilitating any other part of the ship. The true bridge was housed, as in any sensible craft, in the midsection of the vessel, with fuel cells, reactor and munitions stores nearby. A tiny hanger situated on the underside of the picket held a single old Flyer class Diplomatic Shuttle, for ferry and transport duties.

He knew the specifications for the ship well, having reviewed all the necessary documents: It was two hundred meters long, consisted of eight adjacent decks, and a standard acceleration sublight speed of Class Forty, nearly as good as a fighter. The hyperdrive unit made 0.8 past lightspeed, the hull armor was rated to stand up against Grade Three weaponry, or anything up to and including the size of the I-10 herself, and the shields had a strength rating of Three, in the same brand as Grade Three weaponry. Armament consisted of duel bow-mounted torpedo tubes for enemy warships, a pair of all-purpose missile batteries, eight heavy Anti-Ship Particle Cannons for long range, fifteen solid-shot coilguns for close quarters, and twenty laser turrets which could serve either a point-defense role in space or anti-personnel capacity in atmosphere. She had a crew of twenty seven, five bridge officers, eight engineer-technicians, six medical personnel, two pilots and six Marines, all cross-trained to various degrees in each others duties. The corvette could fill a multitude of mission profiles, including patrol, escort, transport, picket, hunter-killer, anti-fighter, close ground support and reconnaissance.
And she was his.

Held on by struts on a colossal cradle, the ship was tended to on all sides by dozens of maintenance crew and drones. The kitsune and their droids swarmed around, inside and even on and over her, testing armor, checking systems, loading weapons, running diagnostics, fueling and any other of the hundreds of tasks that were to be filled out before she was fit to go. Their voices, shouted orders, yelled reports, the chatter of conversation and the occasional laugh or cry mixed with the sounds of thrusters firing experimentally, booted feet on metal, the clang of tools and the hiss and whir of hydrospanners as the corvette was examined and climbed over by the crew, like a queen ant being tended to by worker drones. Despite the din, the noises echoed in the cavernous hanger, bouncing off the far bulkheads and high ceiling, presided over by catwalks leading to the hanger control center, all illuminated by simple Guilda energy crystals fused into the bulkheads and even the deck itself. From what he could see, Matsuyama was the first of the actual crew to arrive.

At the base of the structure holding the I-10 in place Matsuyama stopped, and finally tore his gaze away from the ship -his ship!- rising up dozens of meters overhead. Like many of the rest of the kitsune on the Triton, he was quite green, he'd only graduated from the Imperial Academy a year or so ago and, aside from his time on the Light Cruiser Unshakable in the First Fleet as a Lieutenant, this would be his first assignment. Corvette Commander was a common position for newly minted combat officers, a stepping stone to promotion of bigger and better armed warships, but Matsuyama didn't really have any aspirations to rising to seniority aboard a cruiser or carrier. He was, he had to admit, here less because of any sense of ambition or desire to be a hero than he was because he loved his country and this seemed more interesting than going to university and becoming a consultant or whatever it was he might have ended up as. He didn't regret that decision, but staring up at the I-10, he wondered if he would be able to handle taking her into battle against the Greali if that's what it came to.

Shaking the idea off, trying to assure himself with the thought that they weren't at war with the humanist empire yet, he turned to his crew roister, looking to see if he knew anyone from Academy.

XIS Triton, Wuin System, Year of Our Lord Emperor Foxfire Rose Seventeen, Death of the Life Season

Lieutenant Commander Kawazoe was not going to pretend that she was not disappointed with her new assignment.

The Kitsune officer had hoped that her new promotion would guide her to vessels such as the battleship Pride of Empire, flagship of the Xiscapian home fleet and which carried the flag of the Grand Admiral herself. Then there was the XIS Jade, the only fleet-killer in the navy, the most powerful warship the Xiscapians had and a ship which generated fear and awe in equal measures whenever it was seen. It wasn’t as if she was purely after the biggest vessels in the fleet. There was the XIS Starrider, a ship famed as much for the variety of it’s missions as much as their importance. These where the ships she had hoped to find herself on upon promotion from Lieutenant and she had no doubt that an officer of her calibre would have been welcomed on these or on any battleship in the navy.

There was any number of battleships which had cut their teeth against a great variety of foes and menaces and were acknowledge as the imperial trump card when it came to a conflict. If a battleship showed up, you knew that something serious was about to happen and that you were right in the thick of it. Thinking such thoughts had brought a warm, patriotic glow to Kawazoe’s heart. It as the pride that one could only get by performing such duties, the sense of satisfaction that the empire was safe for another day because of the efforts you had put in far from home. The Korr had been defeated, although she was much too young to have served in that particular conflict, or the multitude of similar conflicts which had come before it. she had, however fought in the very brief Xiscapian civil war, or the false rebellion as it was more commonly referred to, another brief war which would someday barely gain a paragraph in a book on great battles of the Xiscapian people.

This was the reason for her disappointment. She had seen plenty of action in her brief career and she had risen quickly through the ranks of the XIN to lieutenant commander. It was a position that qualified her to serve on the senior staff of any vessel on the fleet, something which she had been working towards with a great drive for some time. Qonn, even being assistant Engineer twice removed on the Pride of Empire would have been enough for her. She could have been proud of that posting, proud of the uniform, proud to say that she served on the guardian of Xiscapia itself. It was not such a big thing to ask she reckoned.

Instead she had been assigned to the I-10, a Destructor-Class Corvette. A Corvette! She wasn’t even its captain! Instead she had been assigned as executive officer to the vessel behind a Commander by the name of Matsuyama. That had really depressed her. She remembered sitting and brooding in her Tenfour apartment, reading of the technically specifications and trying to find some light at the end of the tunnel which would give her some optimism for the near future. She supposed, in her defence, that the corvette was not such a bad place to be; heavily armed enough to outfight anything of the same size as it but small, fast and manoeuvrable enough to escape anything bigger. Not such a bad place to be really. It was not the assignment itself which irritated her but rather the disappointment that someone of her rank and seniority could be given so much more. She had served in False Rebellion aboard the XIS Warrior so she had combat experience. She doubted Matsuyama could match it.

On the other hand, she supposed it was a good posting and after discussions with friends and colleagues, she had finally seen the good side to it. serving on a corvette with such a small crew required flexibility, it required quick thinking, efficiency and it required leadership. All of these were qualities which she thought she had in abundance and which she hoped to show off to her superior officers. At the same time, corvettes were only really considered a stepping stone up to the next level so perhaps she would have her grand posting at some point in the not-too-distant future. One could only hope.

She glanced over the vessel once, making sure that it looked exactly as it had in the specifications she had been given. A constant, and somewhat ridiculous, fear that the Kitsune possessed was that she had been given the wrong specifications to a ship and she would board a new ship with no idea where anything was or how it worked, basically being helpless in a place that was supposed to be your own personal fortress. Not being in control. That was her biggest fear on a new Starship.

Finally feeling the nerves, the Kitsune stepped forward and saw a Kitsune standing nearby, a lanky, cream-furred Kitsune who was evidently the new commanding officer of the I-10. She approached him and cleared her throat once to get his attention. When he turned he would see a homo vulpes of average height, with a slender body beneath her uniform which was perfect tailored to her form, bright green hair which had been cut short and brown fur which adorned her ears, hidden under her cap, and her tail which was clean and well groomed. Her eyes were a piercing orange and, while she was quite handsome, there was a sharpness to her face which gave the impression that she was not to be messed with and that her humour for such occasions would be very poor indeed.
“Commander Matsuyama?” She asked, bowing deeply, tail flicking, “I am Lieutenant Commander Kawazoe, your new Executive Officer.” A pause for the introduction to sink in, “So this is our new vessel? Quite an impressive little pillbox Sir.” She said by way of compliment.

She may have been disappointed but she would make the best of it. She always did.

XIS Triton...

His eyes had barely alighted on the name of his Lieutenant Commander when, as if summoned by magic, Kawazoe appeared, introducing herself and bowing. He didn't know her, but in a Navy that employed more people than some nations had citizens, this was not surprising. He bowed back. "Pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Commander," he responded, looking back up to the I-10 at her words. "That she is," he said, a bit distantly, eyes roving over the turrets before falling and landing on Kawazoe again. He identified her as being attractive, and he could see just by looking at her face that she'd seen some action -which was more than he could say for himself- but he wasn't looking for a mate at the moment and he wasn't eager to have a junior officer who'd watched a mop-up trying to tell him how to do his job. Then again, his reservations might only be a by-product of assuming command for the first time.

"It's too bad we didn't get one of the models with ion cannons installed," he murmured, thinking about how much easier it was to destroy a ship if you could bring her shields down in one salvo. He wondered if Captain Yukio would put the little ship up next for modification; some of the other Destructor craft onboard were being outfitted with the weapons, and it was rumored that some new fighter project was going to be tested on the Triton, all because of Yukio's efforts on behalf of his crew. Say what you like about the inexperience of the crew, draftiness of the ship or the unfairness of positions, you couldn't fault the Captain, he was nearly legendary in the fleet for doing whatever it took to make sure his kitsune were the first to get the newest, most cutting-edge, state-of-the-art equipment and training. Matsuyama decided he would petition for the installation, the ion cannons would add a fair bit of firepower to the I-10 and give him a little peace of mind. He finally dragged himself out of his thoughts to engage in actual conversation with Kawazoe.

"You look like you've seen some battles," he commented, a little envious. Despite his thoughts that she had probably just seen a fight from afar he wished he had some combat experience of his own under his belt. Certainly, he thought, it would make him more confident. "Battle of Resistance?" he guessed, referring to the first and only battle of the False Rebellion in the Elder System at Old Xiscapia. It was a safe guess, most of the fleet had been there to engage James Rose's rebels and his Volta Korr, rouge Calaverian, pirate and Alversian Republican Army allies. There had been a fair bit of tactical maneuvering there, he remembered, and a particularly embarrassing moment for the APN when their fleet had gotten hung up in a mine field and been unable to assist the Imperial Fleet, but the ships had done well and the vast majority of the hostile craft had been captured or destroyed, with only a handful managing to escape.

“Yeah,” Kawazoe nodded in agreement, looking over the corvette and trying to see it in combat. She could not see such a thing happening yet, but no doubt over the coming months they would see plenty of action, either against the Greali or whatever enemy saw fit to menace her people and her civilisation. Whatever the menace, whatever the danger, they would be there to stop it. Although that job would be much easier if they had ion cannon installed on the vessel. The Xiscapian reckoned they could as much as double their firepower if they managed to refit with ion cannon installed. Hopefully, along with the ion cannon, there would be other improvements to weapons, other systems and shields. It was not that she felt it was underarmed, just that a ship could never have too much firepower.

She heard the captain’s second question and she nodded again,
“On the Warrior,” She replied, thinking of the Light Cruiser, “We took quite a pounding during the battle. It was a damn good ship…” She trailed off as she realised just how much she was going to miss the ship and all the crew who she had come to know as family rather than friends. She realised that she would have to do the same all over again on the I10 and that was somewhat of a concern. She had no idea how she would get on with her fellow crewmembers yet and the corvette was not so big that one could avoid another easily onboard. She would have to see.

“How about you Sir?” She asked, “Have you seen action yourself?”

XIS Triton...

"No," Matsuyama shook his head, abashed. "My last assignment was on the Unshakable. Not much fighting in the Xiscapian System," he smiled weakly. Whatever he thought of people who thought watching a battle was the same as fighting it, he wished he was the one with combat experience. Still, they had something in common, both the Warrior and the Unshakable were Light Cruisers, they might have even had the same position -Matsuyama's had been Tactical Officer. "The rest of the crew should be assembling soon, the Captain's ordered we take her out for a shakedown cruise." It wouldn't be the corvette's maiden voyage, of course, but it had been a long time since she last flew, so a chance to work out and kinks and problems in a safe area near help would be sensible.

An awkward silence descended. Curious, Matsuyama looked to Kawazoe, noting the shapes of a few more people entering the massive hanger across the room. "What position did you have on the Warrior? Was the fight as hard as they said it was?" Matsuyama had no thirst for combat, but he wished he could have been there, anything to give him more connection to his second-in-command. If they didn't establish a rapport, they were going to have a long and uncomfortable command together.

"A shakedown run would be a good idea," Kawazoe nodded, "she's been mothballs for a while, so it'll do her good to shake the cobwebs from her." She had also noticed the slightest hint of jealously emanating from her senior officer and, while she could not ignore it, she was not going to pretend that it did not please her in a little way. She enjoyed it when people took notice of her, seeing as Command had not done so when coming up with the assignments, else it would be her who was in command of the I10 and not Matsuyama, a Kitsune who, by his own admission, had never even seen combat before. She had, she had been in the thick of it, she had seen the brunt of the fighting and she had come out of it a better officer. He did not have that benefit. Perhaps the Greali would be so kind as to send out a few ships for a skirmish first, that way they could practise a little before the real fighting started. She had no doubt there would be fighting. In fact, she was sure of it.

“Mmm?” She had been daydreaming and thus only barely heard his second question, her tail flicked for a second as she tried to guess what he had said, “Oh, I was the tactical officer,” She explained calmly, eyes still up at the corvette, “it was a highly…fierce battle yes.” She said that now but she could remember the battle vividly. The screams of alarms, the panic bubbling inside her as system after system on her console went dead, the slight spring in her movements as she braced herself for the order to abandon ship. It had never come of course, she had been lucky enough to survive and endure where many had not. Still…at the same time it was hard not feel an attachment to that ship. After all they had been through together. It had brought about strong ties of brotherhood.
“Hopefully nothing on the I10 will be as…intense…” She went back to her surveying of the corvette.

XIS Triton...

"Ah," Matsuyama looked away and said nothing, a little embarrassed. Kawazoe clearly didn't want to talk about it, and only now, too late, did it occur to him that she might have lost friends on that ship. Why does everything I say come out wrong? Unlike her, he looked away from his new ship, towards the advancing figures on the other side of the hanger, faintly aware that she'd taken an airy, somewhat condescending tone towards him. It wasn't right for a Lieutenant Commander to speak to her Commanding Officer that way, but he didn't have the nerve to reprimand her. He shuffled a little, desperate to get away.

Walking towards them from the other side of the cavernous room was a trim male kitsune in a black KIN uniform, hands at his sides, eyes not on them but on the I-10 overhead. He seemed to be gazing at the corvette intensely, orange eyes scanning her lines eagerly, taking it all in, excited. His bright orange fur was well-kept and his short, dark hair looked groomed, he'd clearly put a great deal of care into his appearance. As he got closer he seemed to almost break into a jog, boots -a size too large for him, Matsuyama noticed- clicking every step of the way, and he slowly focused on his superiors, a slow, wide grin crossing his face. He stopped less than a meter away and bowed very low, straightening up so fast Matsuyama thought he might have gotten whiplash.

"Ensign Terashima reporting for duty SAH!" He saluted stiffly, going rigid, grin dropping away to be replaced by a look he probably thought was appropriately serious but was more reminiscent to Matsuyama of constipation. He hazarded a sidelong glance at Kawazoe before acknowledging him.

"Yes, ah...at ease, Ensign."

Terashima relaxed. "It's an honor, sir!" He grinned again. "Commander Matsuyama, am I right?" he asked, nodding vigorously when proven correct. "And you're Lieutenant Commander Kawazoe!" He spoke of them as though they were minor celebrities. "I've read all the files on you! Well, all the ones I could get at, anyway! XIS Unshakable, Annihilator class Light Cruiser, Tactical Officer under Captain Yoshiyuki, newly transferred, right?" He smiled when Matsuyama muttered an affirmative, and turned on Kawazoe. "XIS Warrior, Annihilator class Light Cruiser, Tactical Officer under Captain Kumi, served at the Battle of Resistance, am I right?" He couldn't seem to stop grinning.

Kawazoe looked at the excited Kitsune and scanned over him with a professional eye. The first thing she saw was appearance, which was irritatingly immaculate in that style that young Ensigns and Staff Officers seemed able to pull off easily. Every movement was perfect, every detail exact. It irritated her. It stank of the rulebook and one of the first things an officer learned was that the rulebook was only there to offer suggestions, not to dictate battlefield tactics. Even most of the people who had written the book suggested that they were more guidelines than actual rules. Kids didn’t get that. She knew that she was once like this ensign but that was another life.

“Ensign Terashima,” She replied, “Served nowhere under the command of damn all. Fresh from the academy with his boots shined and his uniform clean.” She shook her head, “It’s going to take a lot of work to get you up to scratch.” She sighed even thinking about it, “but you got average test scores so that’s good. People at the top are less prone to adaptation.” She looked up at their new ship once more,
“So what can you tell me about your new home?” She asked, testing his knowledge carefully, knowing what she was looking for.

XIS Triton...

Being reminded of his lack of experience and told he had a lot of work ahead of him didn't seem to phase Terashima, he just kept smiling in a way that transcended even cheerfulness into an almost ecstatic excitement. "I won't let you down ma'am!" he promised her confidently. He didn't even have to think about it after his new Lieutenant Commander made her query. "I know this ship like my own tail! Destructor class Corvette, Two hundred meters in length, twenty meters wide, beam of twenty five maximum, ten minimum, eight decks, standard acceleration sublight speed of Class Forty," he took a breath, "The hyperdrive unit makes 0.8 past lightspeed, hull armor rated to resist Grade Three weaponry, Class Three Shields, combination graviton shear and energy field. Armament consists of duel bow-mounted torpedo tubes, two of all-purpose missile batteries, eight heavy Anti-Ship Particle Cannons, fifteen solid-shot coilguns and twenty laser turrets. Crew of twenty seven, five bridge officers, eight engineer-technicians, six medical personnel, two pilots and six Marines. Mission profiles include patrol, escort, transport, picket, hunter-killer, anti-fighter, close ground support and reconnaissance," he rattled off, barely taking another breath, "oh, and contains one shuttle bay nominally transporting one intersystem shuttle but can be configured to support drone units, mines, a scout or a fighter."

Matsuyama was impressed; it sounded like the junior officer had spent at least as much time as he had researching the corvette. "And what is your position aboard, Ensign?"

"I'm the Communications Officer, sir!" Terashima said brightly.

"Ah..." Matsuyama wondered how he had been selected for the assignment. The young kitsune certainly talked a lot, but he was fairly sure that that didn't necessarily make him a good Comm Officer. He looked at Kawazoe again, then tried to make himself stop. She is not in command here, he told himself sternly. You are. Start acting like it!

Kawazoe looked at the kitsune, blinking as he reeled off the information about the ship. She certainly couldn't fault him for the information which he had given, as it all matched the information she had read from her own briefing. Of course, just because he knew the information on paper didn't mean he was going to be effective within the vessel. After all, the specifications put down on the ships were usually just recommendations of what the ship should achieve. More often than not, a ship could easily reach and exceed any recommendations. Sure, her little corvette had been tasked to stay out of the battle but she had no doubt that, in the right hands, it could take down a Greali capital ship. A cruiser was certainly within scope and she was sure that it could take one out of it came to battle. On the other hand, she didn't know if Matsuyama was the right man to command the I10 in such a situation. He seemed like a nice guy, if not overly confident in command. But then what did she know. She wasn't at all bitter that he had gotten the command she felt she should have had. Not at all. She looked at the kitsune again, wondering if there was some point in the day when he didn't grin like a lunatic and talk with the speed of a machine gun.
"Alright then Ensign," She muttered, "What languages can you speak?" She asked, wondering how he would get on as a Communications officer, "I take it that you understand how to operate the communications console to it's full potential? I don't mean the regulation potential, I mean it's full potential."

XIS Triton...

If he sensed Kawazoe's faint disapproval, Terashima didn't let on. "I am fluent in the Great Thirty Eight languages and dialects required for Communications," he said happily, "which encompasses thirty two ancient Terran languages on which a number of modern dialects are based, Galactic Common, Basic, all three dialects of Xiscapian, binary, Traderese and several distinct subgroups of Latin. I also informally trained myself to speak passable elvish, leetspeak and Aluminan," he looked a little embarrassed, as if afraid of boasting. "I have been trained to use the Communications console to transmit and receive messages, signals and uplinks on high and low frequencies, I've been instructed in the use of interception, jamming and counter-jamming techniques. Uh," he looked positively anxious now, "I also know how to encode and encrypt messages and signals, and how to crack foreign codes and encryptions, and how to use security protocols to prevent infiltration of systems through the use of passive or invasive viruses..." He trailed off. "I'm not sure what else there is to it, ma'am." He smiled widely. "Do you know more? I'd be happy to learn from you. My instructor told me you can never know too much about your field!"

Kawazoe looked over the young ensign again, secretly impressed with the knowledge he had of his station. It was unusual for an ensign to come out with such a broad understanding of his role and she was quite pleased about it. if they were going to be in command of by-the-book kids then at least they could be relatively smart by the book kids. If Terashima was anything to go by then perhaps this would not be such a bad assignment.
“Hmm, not too bad,” She said aloud, contemplating all that he had said, tail curling on itself, ears flicking to each new sound as she heard it. Indeed, the hangar was hardly silent as dozens of people and drones worked on the corvette. There was still to much that needed to be done before she would be ready for her shakedown run then, of course, she wanted very much to have the new ion guns installed as soon as possible to boost their firepower. Once that was done, then she would feel much better about her new ship.

“It’s an impressive start,” She agreed, “however; there is always something which can be learnt of your station. I look forward to seeing you grow Ensign.” She nodded to show her approval.

XIS Triton...

"Thank you, ma'am!" Terashima sprang right back, bowing repeatedly as though his joints were hinges, as animated and eager-to-please as ever. "Your opinion means a lot to me! I look forward to watching you too!"

Matsuyama blinked. Something about those words didn't seem quite right. "Are you being insubordinate, Ensign?"

"Me, sir?" Terashima looked innocent. "I don't think so. Am I?"

"Forget about it," the Commander sighed. A talkative Communications Officer, a distant First Officer and a Commander who's never seen battle. What an assignment this is going to turn out to be.

He glanced at the roister again, and looked up to the opposite end of the hanger. It looked, he thought hopefully, like more of the crew were arriving.

Kawazoe shook her head in amusement as the clueless Ensign was questioned by the Captain. Like him, she had first thought there was something sinister by his words but his rather naive reply had convinced her otherwise. He hadn’t meant anything by his words except he was going to be watching the lieutenant commander do her duties and she supposed that was a compliment, if nothing else. As long as he didn’t watch her do anything else then she could live with that. She looked up with the captain, in time to see a male approaching from the other side of the hanger.

He was walking upright and proud, with a straight back, dignified posture and almost alumina-esque air of arrogance about him. His uniform fitted him perfectly; with his brown-furred tail flicking with each stride he approached the trio of Officers. His hair, or what little could be seen below the cap, was a deep blue colour which seemed to go with his bronze skin. His fierce orange eyes surveyed each officer in turn before he offered a bow. Not as low as Terashima’s but low enough to show respect and not insubordination.

“Afternoon Sirs,” he stated, “I am Ensign Naoki, Tactical Officer for the I10.” He did seem to have the built of a tactical officer, although he looked as though he could have been a marine at some point. Bulky and powerfully built underneath his uniform, he had the keen stance of a Kitsune waiting for action and yet the calmness of one who knew that it could never come. He was also a fair bit taller than Matsuyama and a good bit taller than Kawazoe. For her part though, she was impressed.

XIS Triton...

"Tactical Officer," Matsuyama bowed back in unison with the other two. He too was immediately impressed by what he saw, his Tactical Officer looked the part and it was clear from his stance and body that he knew exactly what was expected of him as an officer of the KIN and was going to carry out his duties with the utmost efficiency. It was actually a little intimidating, yet another kitsune who probably should have achieved the rank of Commander ahead of him, but for whatever reason was now subordinate to him. Terashima stared at Naoki, and Matsuyama could sense he had some bit or factoid about the officer ready to spring forth, so he hastily intervened. "I am Commander Matsuyama, C.O. This is Lieutenant Commander Kawazoe, Executive Officer, and Ensign Terashima, Communications Officer. Glad to have you aboard."

Terashima looked up at Naoki, who had quite a bit of height on the younger kitsune. "How much can you bench press?"

“Considerably more than you,” Naoki looked snootily down at his fellow Ensign, taking in his appearance and culminating in the decision that he was unimpressed, at least with his physical aspects. He really did not think that the boy was up to much but then he was one who demanded the highest levels of skill from both himself and those around him. For his part, this ensign seemed intensely irritating and he really was not in the mood to deal with him. At least the Lieutenant Commander looked semi-descent, not bad looking either, but he had other things to focus on,
“Sir, when will we be able to get aboard our corvette?” He asked rather brusquely, “only I would like to run over the tactical systems before our shakedown cruise.”

"Oh," Terashima deflated. His ears drooped and his tail, normally flicking and twisting madly with excitement, went limp, head bowing. It was like watching a puppy get kicked. Matsuyama, however, couldn't spare the time for his Communications Officer. "Diagnostics are being run now but you'll get the opportunity to look your station over once all of the senior crew has assembled, Ensign," he told Naoki, trying to match his brisk, no-nonsense tone. It seemed to Matsuyama that he must have a lot of experience despite his relatively young age, or at least a fanatical belief in the Kitsune Empire; an attitude like his wasn't something you acquired, it was something you were born with.

"Very good Sir," Naoki nodded to show he would follow the Captain's orders, noting that he sounded more authoritarian now than he had done when first meeting him. The Tactical Officer saw that as a good thing. In his mind, there were certain things that needed to be upheld on the bridge of a starship, any starship and that included small corvettes. One of the most important things was control. If he felt that the Captain could not keep discipline on his vessel then Naoki would probably ask for a transfer as soon as possible. He did not mind a little banter on the bridge, for such things were unavoidable. However, when it got to a certain level then it stopped being inevitable and started being a pain in the ass. The Captain was right though, he was certainly patriotic. Naoki was probably as patriotic as one could get without carrying an Imperial flag around and weeping whenever the Imperial anthem was played. It had been bred into him by generations of his family, all soldiers of the Emperor and proud of it. For now though, he would have to earn their pride in him and his new position.
"When is the rest of the senior staff arriving sir?" he asked, noting that the First Officer was keeping an eye on the hangar entrance for signs of new arrivals.

XIS Triton...

"Within the next few minutes," Matsuyama answered. He sensed approval from Naoki, felt gratified for it, and immediately berated himself for feeling gratified. It should be the other way around! He shook his head slightly. When he'd been told he was getting command of a starship, this hadn't been what he had pictured. It wasn't bad, necessarily, though it was far from ideal, it was just strange. Against expectations.
Speaking of which...

Another officer was walking across the hanger. This one was quite tall, around Naoki's height, but very thin, with little in the way of fat or muscle; he almost looked malnourished. His fur was a light coffee brown, hair a dull silver, yellow eyes not focused on his fellow crew or the ship, but on the datapad in his hands, which he was busily interfacing with. He walked in the straight line of someone completely focused on his work, departing and arriving engineers and technicians walked around him because if they didn't he would have crashed right into him. Unfortunately, one of the smaller drones that had been working on the ship, off on some unknowable errand, crossed the kitsune's path.

If he'd been paying attention he could have easily avoided it, but he wasn't. Instead, the Ensign tripped right over the robot, stumbling and crashing to the deck, datapad clattering away from him. Terashima giggled, then stopped when no one else joined in. The unknown officer lay there for a moment, blinking curiously, then picked himself up, rubbing at his elbows and knees, and retrieved the datapad, glancing up at the I-10. He looked critically at the datapad, then back up to the ship, frowning; it was like he'd barely noticed the fact that he'd literally tripped up and made a fool of himself. Finally, when he was just a couple meters away, he seemed to notice the congregation of officers staring at him.

"Hello," he said vaguely, then seemed to remember his station, "uh, sir..." He squinted at Kawazoe's uniform, "and ma'am." He bowed, straightened up. "Ensign Sugano."

Matsuyama was almost afraid to ask. "What is your position, Ensign?"

"Instruments Officer...sir."

"Ah," Matsuyama was relieved. It wasn't the sort of job where a careless mistake could get them all killed, like Chief Engineer. "Might I ask what you were doing on that datapad?"

"Um..." Sugano noticeably shifted the datapad closer to his body. "Just...sketching..."

"What?"

"Sketching, sir," Sugano said, a little too loudly. He blinked. "The ship. Sir." He held the datapad aloft. On it was a beautifully rendered, highly detailed model of the I-10. The corvette looked a great deal sleeker and more majestic than it did at the moment. "It's a hobby of mine," he murmured shyly. "I'm good with design. They told me I should be an Engineer, but I wanted to model, and there's no better place to see accurate models than behind a Sensor station..."

"Wow," Terashima looked excited, or at least more excited than usual. "Do you do-"

"No." Sugano seemed to have anticipated whatever question the young kitsune was about to ask.

"Not even-"

"No. Just ships and stations. And drones, sometimes," Sugano added thoughtfully. "I like drones."

Terashima looked crestfallen.

Kawazoe raised an eyebrow at the sight of their instruments officer and glanced quickly across to the Captain to see what he made of the ensign. He seemed a bit…lacking in focus, although he certainly seemed to have worked hard on his model. The XO wondered if he spent as much time on his station as he did on his drawings. If the drone incident was anything to go by then perhaps this was equal a rather nervy time in the Starship. Then again, she reckoned it was a blessing from Qonn that he had chosen not to be an engineer, or indeed a weapons officer, something where a lack of concentration could mean the meaning between life and death.

She peered at the sketch on the pad and noted that it was indeed rather good, although he would be going a little on imagination as the I-10 looked nothing like it did on the sketch just yet. If he had been drawing what he had seen then it was still be festooned with drones and workers and surrounded by the mini explosions that indicated a form of welding going on. Still, she didn’t really have a nose for this sort of thing so she supposed it was good. She never really gave herself much downtime but, when she did have it, she preferred to do something simpler and less skilful, such as reading and relaxing in her quarters. She rarely thought of it though, for the moment, she was all about the mission and her new assignment.

She raised another eyebrow at Terashima's questions and wondered, temporarily, if the ensign was really just a teenager who was impersonating an imperial officer. Certainly, he did seem quite…immature for someone in his position and she was just a little concerned that perhaps he was too young for this posting. At the same time, she dismissed her stupid thought as she remembered reading his profile and thus understood that he was here on merit and not just because he had talked his instructors to death.

“Welcome to the I-10, Ensign,” Kawazoe replied to Sugano, offering him a military salute, “I take it you are up to date with your posting?” She wanted to check he hadn’t spent the time drawing and had indeed done his homework.

Off to her left though, she could sense Naoki’s disapproval and was not really surprised by it. Judging from what she had seen of the tactical ensign so far, anyone who was not infected with the same form of national zeal that drove him forward did not seem to be worthy of a posting in the navy and this ensign, who seemed to be spending more time drawing than paying attention to his surroundings, did not appeal to the Ensign. On the other hand, she did not anticipate a problem, just a slight radiance of disapproval. The ensign knew better than to go any further than that.

XIS Triton...

When Kawazoe saluted him Sugano imitated the gesture, or at least tried to. His posture seemed slightly off, crooked at the shoulder, and while he got most of it right with the tail and the ears his hand was not as straight as it could have been. He seemed aware of this, and, standing perfectly still, tried to remedy this, using Kawazoe as a reference. When she dropped the stance he gratefully did so as well, clearly uncomfortable with some of the finer points of protocol. At her question they could all see his eyes widen with panic.

"Um, yes ma'am...?" He clearly didn't know what she meant. "I...um...I've reviewed my station throughly," he hazarded. "I know what is expected of me."

Somewhat suspicious now, Matsuyama pulled up Sugano's records on his datapad. "Ensign, just how long have you-"

The data came up, and Matsuyama fell silent.

According to the records, Sugano had a career with more numerous, lengthier postings than Kawazoe and Naoki combined. Matsuyama was surprised to see his service predated the end of the Korr War; he'd started out in the KIN the came year contact had first been made with the Alversians. At first he'd served on larger ships as a spacer, but as time passed a definite trend appeared. He moved up the ranks slowly but steadily, achieving more and more technical positions, but at the same time he requested postings on smaller and smaller vessels. According to one section, he'd turned down a prime spot on a Destroyer so he could take a slightly better one on a smaller patrol cruiser, and so the pattern continued, eventually leveling out with Sugano serving as Instruments Officer on a variety of small ships, ranging from corvettes to patrol cruisers to gunships and even a brief stint in the People's Navy aboard a survey scout.

"Year of Our Lord Emperor Foxfire Rose Two, Death of the Fire Season, sir," Sugano answered promptly, seeming glad that there was something he could say that he knew to be right. "This will be my..." he frowned, "eighth ship? No, ninth, counting the APS Fading Twilight," he smiled fondly in remembrance. "Not much action, but I got to see the Illesian Dockyards, and the Sparrowhawk, and one of their fleets in formation. I think I still having the renditions."

Slowly, Matsuyama passed the datapad over to Kawazoe, wondering all the while how this seemingly klutzy kitsune had accumulated more experience than all of them combined.

Kawazoe took the pad suspiciously, still looking at the kitsune as if someone was playing an elaborate joke on the behalf of the Imperial Navy. There was no way that an ensign of this quality could have been passed by the Academy. He was clumsy, seemingly unfamiliar with his station and rather lacking in the protocol that was essential in the fleet. She looked at his information and did not bat an eyelid as she processed it. Internally though, she was thinking hard. He had been in the service longer than her for sure and that meant he was a lot older. Yet he was still only an ensign...She did not compare everyone to herself because people developed at different levels and people could be ready for different promotions at different times. However, Sugano had been in the navy for at least four years without promotion beyond the base officer rank. That did not look...encouraging. When she was finished, she looked at the kitsune again, regarding him coldly, calculating,

"Ensign Sugano," She addressed him finally, "have you seen much action in the Imperial fleet?" She was wondering this herself. Usually, the smaller vessels in the fleet were seen as a stepping stone to something bigger and more grand. Sugano seemed to be the opposite. It was a curious manner to do things in.

XIS Triton...

"Oh, yes ma'am," Sugano nodded, seeming a bit more at ease. "That's why I don't like big ships. They don't get as much action as the smaller craft, the pickets usually have the best sensors, and they're more likely to be first responders to a pirate attack or colony raid than a capital vessel. Capitals don't leave dock much, and when they do they often have a screening force; basically, ma'am, it's boring being an Instruments Officer on a Heavy Cruiser or Battleship. On a corvette or escort there's more action closer in, and more situations for the scanners to be used, which gives me more sketching opportunities. Of course," he added thoughtfully, "that's not true of the scouts or survey ships I served on, they tend to avoid combat, but they spend more time taking data of planets and nebula than other ships. There's only so many planets you can render before it gets repetitive."

Looking over Kawazoe's shoulder, Matsuyama accessed the comments section of Sugano's profile, looking to see what his superiors had said about him. Impossibly, what he saw there was even more surprising than the initial shock. He stared, open-mouthed for a moment, before looking up to the Instruments Officer.

"You refused promotion?" he asked incredulously, glancing back down at the pad. "They offered you Lieutenant position after you achieved Ensign rank...and again...and again...five times? And," he almost slapped the datapad down as he pointed at it, "you turned down a command promotion?" Are you insane? he wanted to ask. This was unheard of. Yes, occasionally a commander or captain got attached to their ship and stayed in that rank for the rest of their career, but this wasn't allegiance to a vessel, this was allegiance to a specific type of craft because it was superior in certain areas with regards to the sensors...and all because he liked to draw. If others had that kind of devotion to the KIN that he has to his hobby we'd have taken over half the galaxy by now!

"Yes sir," Sugano was saying, looking uncertain. "I...like my position, sir. Moving up would either put me in a command position, or transfer me to a larger ship. I don't want that."

"And High Command has played along with this?"

"Uh...yes sir. I guess?" The Instruments Officer seemed quite flustered by the amount of attention he was getting. He looked desperately to Kawazoe for support.

XIS Triton

For her part, Kawazoe will still trying to figure out just what exactly was going on in the mind of their new sensor officer, because he was sure as hell like no other officer she had ever met during her time in the imperial navy. To turn down a promotion was really unthinkable within the navy, to turn down promotion five times and then refuse his own command really led the Kitsune to believe that there was something not quite right about the ensign. She could understand if he had become attached to a particular vessel that he would want to stay with it and with the crew. That was fairly common and she had been tempted initially to do the same thing on the Warrior. Sugano, on the other hand, had simply not wanted to go any further. She was hard pushed to say if it was a lack of ambition on his behalf or if he really, truly enjoyed his hobby that much that he was willing to sacrifice his career for it. she did not over all, it was just a highly unusual thing for someone to do. Still…if it did not stop him from doing his job then she supposed there was no real reason for her to concern herself over it. If he was as experienced as his records indicated then it might be helpful to have his presence on the bridge.

Despite this, the Kitsune still felt a little…uneasy about her new assignment and she wondered who in the hell was going to be next into the hangar to join the oddest collection of crewmen that she had possibly ever seen and it made her doubt her own decision to leave her second family on the Warrior and join the I-10. She was normally a lot more confident of such decisions and she had been confident of her choice right up until she had arrived and started to meet the crew. She had no problems with any of them on a personal level yet, although Sugano’s scatterbrained approach to his duties might cause a bit of an issue, it just didn’t feel…right…it was not her crew, he was not her captain and this was not her ship. None of it felt right at the moment and none of it felt the way she had expected it to when she accepted the promotion and transfer. She wished she was back on her old ship…

For the moment though, she put that to the back of her mind and looked to the ensign, noting that he was a little flustered. Surely this was not the first time that someone from the navy had looked at his record and tried to make sense of it all so she could really not see a reason for his confusion, regardless, she pressed on and tried to see if she could make sense of it in her own head,
“Ensign…” She began, then paused, frowning, she was not sure if she wanted to hear the answer to her question, “Why did you join the Imperial Navy?”

XIS Triton...

The Ensign blinked. "Well..." He had to think about it for a moment. "Probably the same reason a lot of people join. See the galaxy, go to foreign places, blow them up, right?" he smiled weakly. "I did consider joining the Customs Fleet, they see a lot of ships, but mostly just merchants and yachts, not much that's really exotic. The KIN, on the other hand, well, you know what they say, new enemy every week, and I thought that would give me a chance to see a lot of new designs and structures I never would have otherwise.
