Is he undermining Christianity?

No, he's a careful researcher and if Christianity is real then the truth won't undermine it.

"Boring, everyday pastor says it might not have been a cross

Postby Imsogone » Sun Jun 27, 2010 1:58 pm

This man, a Christian minister, says that it's entirely possible that Christ (if indeed he existed) may not have died on a cross - it might have been some other form of execution altogether.

Most shockingly, however, he states (oh, blasphemy and heresy) that people should read what the Bible actually says and not what they want it to say!

Clearly, this man is undermining Christianity with his careful research, attention to details and demands that Christians exercise intellectual honesty!

I recall seeing a sect of Christianity that had him on a stake rather than a cross once, I just can't quite put my finger on who it was.

Not to mention, the translation has been done so many times, I'm sure a similar treatment could be done to nearly every word in the Bible, tbqh.

I think the issue here is about intellectual honesty. How he died is interesting and proves nothing. But the idea that so many people think that questioning how he died undermines Christianity proves a great deal - about modern Christians.

HOW he died is quite relevant to much of the ritual and symbolism of modern Christianity.

If he didn't die on a cross, then perhaps the Catholic and Orthodox churches should eliminate or at least reform the ritual of crossing oneself. And yet if they tried that, it should be evident what would happen (see: Old Believers).

Christ was never born. My lack of belief, at least.

I mean seriously, the only accounts we have of his life were the Bible (and let's face it, what with accounts of people defying the laws of physics, it's hardly the most reliable historical source) and some second-hand accounts written by others who had merely heard of him, rather than actually seeing him.

If the Bible were unearthed today, the world would give it about as much credence as the Egyptian Book of the Dead.
