The South Newlandian Football Federation and the Katzeburgian Football Federation are honoured to welcome you to the 41st edition of the Campionato Esportiva.

Format

Teams are drawn into an initial group stage, with one group of 6 and four groups of 5. Every team from a group of 5 will play a team from another group as well to complete their group stage docket of five games. The top three teams per group and best fourth-place finisher will advance to the Round of 16 in a single-elimination bracket.

Tie-breakers used to separate nations in the group stage are as follows - Points (3 per win, 1 per draw), Goal Difference, H2H Result, IC coin flip (scored as a RP bonus-only game). If three or more teams are tied, and a team wins or loses the tiebreaker at any stage while the remaining teams remain tied, tiebreakers start from the top again.

For groups of five teams, the match against team ‘6’ will be the cross-group game, playing the team which matches their pot and listed position in the group.

As the hosts of the tournament, we have a few rules about roleplays of the host nations that we hope you follow. Please don’t kill anyone in these countries without permission. Most things can be talked about; if you have an interesting idea, but aren’t sure if it would be okay, it never hurts to send us a telegram or a message on discord.

Katzeburg is an Esportivan island nation located to the south east of South Newlandia and a population of approximately 39 million. The country has exploded onto the international sporting stage in recent years, with a growing footprint in football - having made the World Cup in WC98 and reaching the semi-finals of CoH 91 and CE 40 with the international team, and having domestic side Katzestadt AFC lift the Associations Trophy during the 21st IFCF cycle - and chess - having the nation lift the 10th and 11th Elephant Chess Cups.

The 41st Campionato Esportiva represents the first international competition held in the country, and as a result, interest in football is at an all-time high as the nation watches on with baited breath to see how the co-hosts go. The government, newly installed in the aftermath of the most recent Cup of Harmony, has pledged a lot of funding to cities and clubs across the country to upgrade infrastructure in light of the CE bid, but as a result of the timing - only three cities managed to upgrade stadiums in time to welcome Esportiva's best and brightest.

Visitors of all types are welcome to visit Katzeburg, with strong laws in support of LGBTQ+ rights and a multicultural makeup. Travellers who do not often get on the beers may find local customs a little challenging, as the average Katzeburgian loves to put down a few no matter the occasion - this is particularly evident during sporting matches, where alcohol consumption is generally an expectation for those watching, but Katzeburgians do appreciate that those who can't have a few are also more than welcome and there is no pressure put on visiting tourists to participate.

Unable to get a ticket to the game days? All games will be broadcast across the country both on free-to-air TV through public broadcaster KBC, but also in a high number of pubs, open air parks, and sporting venues throughout Katzeburg. The nation is keen to welcome visitors and supporters for the first time ever, and anyone lost or in need of help need only ask a local passerby, and they'll be happy to support with a friendly, joking attitude (unless you run into Doris "The Grump" Handerson from south Konigpool, in which case you may need to excuse her bluntness).

Getting around Katzeburg is sadly eaiser said than done, with the nation still developing in the wake of the Katzeburgian Revolution some 23 years earlier. North Katzeburg has strong rail links stretching from Coalbrook to Windorf, and those heading to Katzeburg will be able to visit all three host locations via rail.

If rail isn't your pint of Harmouth Gold, then travellers can access all Katzeburg has to offer via it's network of ferries, bus transit, and government-funded rental car schemes. Those touching down in the country will more often land at the Katzestadt International Airport in the country's capital - the only international airport in Katzeburg - and a free and quick public shuttle service runs travellers from the airport to the city centre and financial district on a regular 15-minute basis, with Katzestadt Central Station allowing trips via train to the remainder of North Katzeburg.

Additional ferries have also been chartered to transport passengers from Inverhaven to other Esportivan ports for the duration of the tournament.

Depending on what you want to see in Katzeburg, there should be something for everyone - South of Katzestadt lies the affluent town of Barenwold and a wide range of agricultural heartlands, with the next major city to the south being Deerhaven, sitting on the southern coast of the nation.

Travelers going east will find the rich forests of the Campbellnia National Park, where travellers could have the chance of spotting a rare blue cat, while those going west are likely to see Mount Mercer - the largest peak in the nation and where the country's winter sports are based - or the city of Waldstein, which has quickly been regarded as the national hotspot for the country's motorsports thanks in part to it being the hometown of WGPC race winner Ron Sommer.

Of interest to travellers may also be the small island of Dragoonspiel up in the north west of the country - now famed as the stomping grounds of the Ynsygard Chess Club, champions of Elephant Chess Cup X and XI, and the most notable thing to come out of the island since its local 'delicacy' baked fish pie.

Climate wise, expect cold winters and moderate summers - snow is often expected during the peak of winter across the country, but is also a regular occurrence on Mount Mercer no matter the time of year. This edition of the Campionato Esportiva is due to take place during one of North Katzeburg's rainier months, with moderate to heavy rain expected towards the latter stages of the tournament, but this shouldn't impact most games as grounds are often well-protected from the elements.

Group A - Katzestadt

The nation's capital will play host to group A, which includes the Katzeburgian national side. The second-largest city in Katzeburg with a population of just over four million, Katzestadt has long been the nation's historical seat of power, with the now historic Katzestadt Castle ruins overlooking the town and the River Cuomo running through the heart of the city. Home to most of the nation's largest white-collar corporations, Katzestadt is a bustling heart of a growing nation, but with plenty of soul should you go exploring down back-alleys.

Katzestadt Arena is the national arena for the Katzeburgian national team and also the home ground of the Katzeburg National League's most successful team, Katzestadt AFC. The stadium has undergone a significant wave of expansion as a result of the successful Campionato Esportiva bid, with capacity now hitting the 50,000 mark after previously being expanded to 30,000 just over 18 months earlier. The ground has hosted all international football in Katzeburg to date, as well as the 22nd Associations Trophy final between Ludogorets Markovsky and Fontvielle Impact.

Bramblewood Park is the second largest football stadium in Katzeburg and the home ground of one-time KNL winners Katzestadt Rovers. The stadium has also undergone major expansion in recent years, and hosted the 49th final of the Campionato Esportivano di Campeones between Mount Olympus FC and Mortonstad.

Group B - Inverhaven and Axmund

Two cities in North Katzeburg will play host to group B, with direct access via rail between them meaning supporters can travel between the two in under a couple of hours. The industrial city of Inverhaven is the largest city in Katzeburg with more than six million residents. Known for it's historic docks and industrial prowess, the city never had much to write home about tourism wise until football exploded in popularity. With two top-flight sides enjoying some solid success and the city being the hometown of national team coach Becka Haberkorn, Inverhaven is a city on the up.

Axmund is another industrial city in the wider region which has seen solid growth in recognition through sport. Just over two million residents call Axmund their home, with a rich forestry background dominating the city's culture and growth. Home to the Langdon Logging conglomerate, logging is the city's lifeblood, made possible thanks to it's proximity to the Campbellnia National Park just on the outskirts of the city. Axmund has two top-flight KNL sides as well, but neither have seen much sustained success as of yet in the growing league, but visitors will be treated to a rapidly diversifying city where everyone is keen to work hard and then have a good natured time afterwards.

Anchor Field is the third largest football stadium in Katzeburg, the largest outside the capital city of Katzestadt, and the home ground of KNL side Inverhaven City. The stadium has gone significant expansion thanks to grant funding from the government and has been upgraded to now meet IFCF regulations. The ground will also host some of the cross-group games between Group A and B.

WELCOME TO SOUTH NEWLANDIA

Things to know
South Newlandia is a small Esportivan island with about four million inhabitants, located somewhere east of Super-Llamaland and northwest of Katzeburg. South Newlandia is known for democracy, elephants, regulated capitalism and environmentalism, and its friendly population.

With South Newlandia being so small, tickets will be in short supply. Even if you can’t get a seat in the stadiums, that isn’t that big of a deal. In many spots around the country, opportunities to watch the games on a big screen, and in many places, it’s completely free of charge.
Note that South Newlandia has full prohibition on selling or giving away all drugs, including nicotine and alcohol. Consumption and import in quantities for personal use is not criminalised.

Getting around inside South Newlandia isn’t a huge problem, it is often more difficult to arrive in the first place. That’s the case with all islands, but South Newlandia has rather few flights and ships exiting and entering, mostly because of environmental regulations.
When you arrive, the best option are the multiple high-speed trains that can get you almost everywhere in the country quickly. If you don’t like trains, for some reason, there are also busses and cars to rent, but the streets aren’t always in perfect condition, and are far less convenient, to be honest. Inland flights are banned in South Newlandia.

The climate typically stays the same in South Newlandia throughout most of the year, with moderate winters and warm summers. Temperatures around 15-25°C can be expected, and although it may rain a bit, there are no big storms forecast during the duration of the Tournaments. Weather extremes are rare; don’t expect any windstorms or floods or anything like that.
There are some wild animals in South Newlandia, but they will generally don’t disturb you if you don’t disturb them.

Group C – EsportivArena, Newport (25,000)
Newport is the second-largest city in South Newlandia with a population around 330,000. Located on the East Coast, it used to be an industrial city, but has been growing rapidly in recent years. Nevertheless, the port the city is named for still plays a major role. In sports, Newport is more known for baseball and chess these days, but they used to have some good football teams as well. The EsportivArena was specifically built for World Cup 89. In honour of Esportiva, South Newlandia represents the region with this stadium. It’s hard to believe is almost twenty years old now, but it remains a very nice arena.

Group D – RTC Coliseum, Rüsselsheim (20,000)
Rüsselsheim is one of the bigger cities in a relatively rural area, with a city population of around 100,000. There isn’t typically a great deal going on here, but there’s a lot of surrounding farming going on. The city is getting a lot of recent development due to extensive sponsorship deals. Anglicising it as “Russelsheim” is perfectly acceptable, by the way. In sports, it's also known for the Broncos of the TOL and the Blue Sox of the LPB. The Broncos are who usually play here, and they managed to trick Banijas RTC into paying for most of it despite the fact that they're losing most of the time.

Group E – Stadium of Friendship, Elephant Valley (also hosts Group D v Group E games)
Elephant Valley, the capital of South Newlandia, makes up about an eighth of the country’s population. The city has relatively few skyscrapers, but is built over a large area instead. Many inhabitants of Elephant Valley are immigrants either in first, second, or third generation, creating a melting pot of all kinds of different cultures. It’s also the main hub for South Newlandian sports, be it soccer, gridiron or baseball, and South Newlandia play most of their home games here. Culturally, its also the main hub for entertainment and politics. The Stadium of Friendship is by far the biggest stadium in all of South Newlandia. It was, very expensively, built by Valentian Constructions Limited, but it has all the bells and whistles of a modern stadium, including a retractable roof and the best available technology everywhere. It stands just outside the city limits, and is easily reachable using all forms of transport. The Stadium of Friendship also hosted a semifinal during World Cup 89, as well as four CE finals - the only venue to host it that often. Not this time, though.

Towards the back of an unassuming cafe positioned some way off the beaten track in Oldetoun sat Reginald Haxod. With an exasperated sigh he tossed his phone on to the rustic wooden table, almost upsetting a sugar dish in the process. For the last two hours, he had come no closer to finding a solution to the small conundrum of how not to have Error Message as national team manager for the rapidly approaching Campionato Esportiva. Thirteen potential candidates he had called to gauge their interest in taking over the Paradystopi helm, thirteen had declined the offer. He was curious as to whether there was some Esportivan baking festival currently happening that he wasn't privy to given that eight of the prospective individuals suddenly recalled they had some manner of baked good which needed to be imminently retrieved from the oven upon the mention of 'Paradystopia'. Of the others, three abruptly met with phone signal issues, and the other two were busy with washing their hair and needing to see a man about a dog respectively.

Reginald gestured to a passing waitress to request a further espresso. This would be his fourth thus far.

Also upon the table lay Error's proposed squad list. Were it not for the fact that it lacked an obvious punchline, it would be imperceptible from a joke. The squad was essentially just penguins. Penguins, Error, and that demonic baboon whom Error uses as a goalkeeper at club level. The tactical notes seemed to be just 'get the ball to Error' accompanied by a crude pencil sketch labelled 'Error; the King of Football, Leader of Penguins, Friend of Baboon'. He has also requested a lavish fur cape and crown as part of his official kit, in lieu of a captain's armband.

Reginald knocked back his fourth espresso and politely asked the waitress to add it to his tab. Just as she turned to do so, he decided to also request a fifth. She smiled a well-rehearsed customer service smile and turned again, only for Reginald then ask for the tonics menu.

"We dun't normally put that aht 'til mid-afternoon, luv."
"Could I see it anyway?"
"Each to their own, darlin'. Ah'll fetch wun over to yer."

To clarify, for those unaccustomed to daily life in Paradystopia, a tonics menu is a list of narcotics provided by the establishment. Practically all recreational substances are legal here and, should one wish to wash down their morning beverage with a line or two of cocaine, they are more than welcome to do so. The vast majority of Paradystopis can manage their substances well and will look out for one another to avoid members of the community becoming 'chronically unfunctional'. However, I digress ...

Having quickly knocked back the coffee, and then turning to look over what on the tonics menu could potentially rid him of this rising anxiety over how much of a laughing stock Paradystopia would be at the upcoming tournament, Reginald noticed an older gentleman stood by his table staring intently at Error's sad excuse for a roster.

"Can I help you?"

Reginald thought about protecting these 'important' documents from prying eyes, but realised it would make little difference to any outcomes if he personally mailed all this tactical information to each individual player in the tournament.

"Oh, sorry. I was just going to ask whether I could borrow that menu after you, but ... well, ... I can't help but notice that ... well, how to say ... can't help but notice that that team sheet seems a bit ... well, umm ... shit ..."

Chuckling a little, Reginald gesticulated to the menu.

"That would be why I have this."
"Ahh. Oh, I see. Well, sorry? Umm, may I?"

The peculiar man indicated to the seat opposite Reginald, and Reginald with no good reason to decline the man, acquiesced.

The most noticeable feature of Reginald's new acquaintance was his long, scruffy beard. It was mostly a dark brown albeit mottled with flecks of grey which converged to bold stripes beneath the corners of his mouth. Above his mouth was a bushy moustache of similarly epic proportions. Balancing atop a hawk-like nose, a small pair of reading glasses which framed dark, yet somehow, kind and attentive eyes. He writhed his tall, lithe frame into the booth and wasted no time in gathering up Error's papers from in front of Reginald and musing them diligently.

"Do you play?"
"Hmmm?"
"Football? Do you play?"
"Oh good grief no. Not at my age anyway. Say, why are there no Xat'i on this team?"
"No idea really, one of the many fla.."
"Now, you see, in my view, they are your greatest asset. Quicker and more agile than the average human. Omitting them is, well, ridiculous."
"Yes, true. Are you familiar with Paradystopi football then?"
"Oh yes, I've seen a few matches anyway. Where was it? Oh yes! I was in Urbsclavium a few weeks back. Well, a good few week now, saw the Xat'i thrash Urbsclawydraeksterlutrja. 5-1 in the end. Fine display albeit, well, how to say, 'un-tempered'? I mean, the Xat'i are good, very good, though it feels to me, they need a little more, umm, 'solidity'? I mean, they've got that 'Jim' fellow but I think, and this is just my opinion, they need a more rigid base to kind of hold the formation and then have the Xat'i folks running in and around that. Reap the rewards of a fluid attacking force but without the lack of a defensive structural base. But well, listen to me waffling on, just my thoughts on the matter, for what it's worth."
"No, go on, by all means."
"Well, also, I mean, given how Erroropolis are currently doing in the league, seventh is it? Sixth? Anyway, one has to question who put Mr. Message in charge. And why for that matter? I think you're going to be hard pressed to get anything out of the Campionato Esportiva with a squad-load of penguins and whoever is organising this shambles should probably have a long hard look at themself."
"That would be me."

Reginald's comment stopped the gentleman in his tracks.

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry. I, umm ... well, I meant no offence."
"None taken. Truth be told, it's a shitshow."
"Oh dear, well, I, umm, I'm sorry about that."
"Do you have any management experience?"
"Me? ... Oh, well, maybe a little. Nothing major, I suppose. Umm, though I guess I was a leader of sorts in my last job."
"Look, at this point, I'd take anyone who'd offer a different direction to fielding penguins and proclaiming themself the King of Football."
"Really? Oh, ummm, well, I suppose I could, I mean, only if you're sure."

Reginald extended a hand across the table.

"Welcome to your new role as Paradystopia's new national football team manager, Mr. ?"

The gentleman warmly accepted the offer.

"It's Pepe. Pepe Papa, former Pope to the Dragonlord of the Qyzzyxzyan Territories."
"Wait, what?"

"Actually, you know what, it doesn't matter in the slightest. As long as you're not Error Message, I'm happy."

Kanzlia, formally recognised as Gracious Kanzlian State, is an island ceremonial kingdom on the far north of Esportiva. The country is divided into 10 provinces. Its main island, Kalta, consists of nearly 85% of the country's population whilst the smaller islands of Serentia and Kureii makes up the rest. The seat of power in Kanzlia lies on its southernmost and largest port city of Szbedansk. It’s followed by the cities of Kotr, Mistralis, and Ibsia. The country is well known for the cold.

The Kanzlian Football Association (Also known as Voetbal Vereniging Kanzlia) was founded in 1900 but Kanzlian Football, in its current pyramid, was only finalised in the 1990s. Prior to this, a double league system was utilised. Anyhow, football is by far the most popular sport in Kanzlia with stadiums jam-packed full in every match of the season. Kanzlia with its history of hardships and prolonged periods of misery has resulted in a deep connection between the sport and Kanzlian society. The culture of the sport is one of fiery passion but also with a noticeable aspect of humbleness. A pundit said that Kanzlians are the sorest of losers during the 90 minutes, but once the game ends they switch back to normal often with an optimistic mood regardless of the result.

Kanzlia plays its official games in the Stadia Szbedansk, a relatively modern 53,280 seater stadium.

Playing Style
The sport of football has been played in some form or another for well over a century on the Isle, but rarely in what we might consider an "organised" manner. Only in the past half-century have things begun to resemble "professionalism" as seen in the rest of the multiverse, and it was only in the past twenty-to-twenty-five years or so that the sport embraced actual professionalism -- the tl;dr here is that allowing workers to be paid to "do sport" was taking efficient and capable workers out of the national production; not exactly a desirable course. It took a lot of persuasion (read: a direct order from the Most Esteemed Leader after his advisors had explained the concept of "soft power" and "sportswashing") to get Governors to allow "sport" to be considered "work conducive to the national production". But here we are.

Anyway, this history means that the Limey team is... not the best at those modern tactics like "false nines" and "inverted wingers", or a "high press", or "offside" or even "passing the ball". They're very much a team -- in the loosest sense of the word -- that operates largely as a... more like an army attacking enemy lines, I suppose? If you tackle the fella with the ball, there's probably a teammate right behind him to retrieve the ball and keep running. Much like if you cut down the first infantryman, there's another bloke with a spear behind him waiting to stab you in the face. Or if you're "modern", you shoot down the first guy and there's another one behind him, unscathed and firing his own weapon at you. Something like that anyway. I've never been in a war.

There are largely two kinds of Limey player. I say largely because there are a few who break the mould, but we'll get to that. Effectively you have "runners" and "hitters". Runners are quick, and good dribblers of the ball. That's their strength. Hitters are big, strong fellas. They tend to be good at winning the ball in both aerial and ground duels, and can hit the ball pretty hard. Good for making clearances. Would be good for long passing too, if they were to embrace the concept of the pass, and not consider it some sort of cowardly act.

Generally, the Limey approach is to have a hitter up front (normally at centre forward), and two more at the back (fullbacks; but not as you're probably thinking, I'll explain later). Pretty much everyone else is normally a runner. Usually. The national team, however, is blessed. They have a rare third and fourth type of player. The third type is what locals call a "lumberjack". In other countries, you might call them a "hatchet man" or an "enforcer". Basically they're kind of like smaller hitters who roam around and clear the way for runners, I suppose? Technically, this means they commit a lot of "fouls", but Limey football is proper football. Where men are men and opposition players are afraid. There are four lumberjacks in the Limey squad, since the gaffer expects refereeing to be "tougher", and this means he'll have to swap them out often, or else they'll be "sent off" for "violent conduct" or some other such soft foreigner nonsense. These players are denoted with "(L)" in the squad list.

The fourth type of player is what is considered an "all-rounder"; and the Limey League has seen few of them. Like can-count-them-on-one-hand few. Right now there is only really one: namely, the captain, Erick Morrison. He's a reasonably big, deceptively strong fella, but also pretty quick and good at dribbling. He's also not bad at this cowardly foreign "passing" the gaffer keeps hinting about. Though he does pretend it wasn't intentional a lot of the time. The rest of the team are still catching up on that, though. Erick often just unleashes a thunderbastard or two-foots an opponent just to make sure everyone knows he's not a coward or some fancy Dan foreigner playing some namby-pamby frilly nonsense football. A proper Limey bloke wouldn't want people to think he's not a proper Limey bloke, after all.

The Manager
The thing about Limey people is that they know their limits. His Georgeousness has therefore hired the best football mind (that his people could entice to the Isle of Albion) to manage and coach the national team. That mind is Abel Martí. The Aquilliano coach enjoyed a reasonably good playing career of his own, playing as a defender and later defensive midfielder for no fewer than twelve teams in his twenty-three year career. In fact, he ended his time as a player on the Isle of Albion, playing his final game alongside Babatunde Warrington, no less, at Georgstead Albion nearly twenty years ago. In the time since, he has coached at six different clubs in three different nations. "Football is different in every country, and now I bring the best parts of them all to Limey George," he says.

Martí is fairly well known on the Isle as a no-nonsense defensive player in his day, but also for having a different edge to his play. He has been quoted as referring to his "clearances that always seem to fall to a teammate" (which is what the local media call his long passes; can't say otherwise, that would be accusing him of cowardice) as "the fruit of practice" and "the lime of my football" -- very colloquial phrases, which endeared him to locals. His attempts to teach his players to do this reliably are beginning to bear fruit -- "if you clear it toward the wings the defenders are less likely to get it", he tells them -- but the poor standard of education on the Isle, combined with people being very set in their ways after following generations of their forefathers doing the exact same... he faces an uphill battle.

All that aside, the Limey team play what Martí calls the "downhill" formation, or the 5-3-2. But to most of you, this would actually be a 2-3-5: 2 defenders (usually "full backs", but sometimes there is a "hybrid back" who can play further forward sometimes), three midfielders (usually a "half back" in the middle and two "half wings", one on either side; a "full half" is a player who can do either role), and five forwards (two "wings", two "inside forwards", and a "centre forward"; though a forward can usually play the role adjacent to his own if needed). Some of you will recognise this as an old tactical system used in several countries, but it's still fairly novel in Limey George, and part of the reason Martí got the job (he's a "modern foreign" manager, you see).

In the Bats' first appearance at the Campionato, on home soil, this recklessly attacking approach arguably led to the team's elimination -- after a crushing defeat to ultimate winners Lozho absolutely ruined their goal difference -- but Martí is unrepentant. "This is the character of the players," he explains. "They are not made for the defending carefully, and all these things. These things are for foreigners. Limey players do not have this mentality."

The Squad
You'll notice the numbering system is a little strange here. Historically, in Limey George, players were not given numbers at first, and simply had different coloured caps to distinguish the goalkeeper from the rest of his team. Foreign influence encouraged the use of shirt numbers, and ultimately squad numbers, but these conventions developed differently to most other nations due to how teams were typically written out. Because teams are traditionally written out forwards first, going from left to right, the left wing position became associated with number 1. Goalkeepers, the number 11.

This numbering quirk remained, even with the advent of squad numbers, with goalkeepers notably preferring a multiple of eleven wherever possible. Perhaps most familiar to outsiders is that the number seven shirt typically goes to a talismanic player. Usually this is the team's "halfback", who is ultimately the primary "playmaker" -- much like most nations' "number ten". Conversely, the centre forward, who is often the focus of attacks, is typically number three, rather than the more familiar number nine in most nations, while the numbers nine and ten are typically the starting defenders (or "fullbacks") rather than attacking players as they would be in most countries. Oddly, the left winger (number one) in many teams is in fact, arguably the best player, and therefore their "number one guy". Though this could just be the endless repetition of a famous trope about lefties in sport in general, and it's now a self-fulfilling prophecy... who knows?

Feel free to pick a starting XI and formation. When in doubt, you may run with a basic 4-4-2/4-3-3. Plans are for the team to play pretty narrow - Irithoren doesn't have a lot of flat, grassy areas, so our league plays on fields that are as small as the laws about field dimensions allow - and adventurous and a little individualistic.

Strategy and tactics are something every team in the league steps on to the field with, but also the first thing that goes out of the window when the going gets tough. Obviously they don't entirely abandon their positions - defenders will still line up behind midfielders, etc - but an equaliser is scored on willpower and daring, not on professional fouls and back passes.

That said, the best three players in Irithoren might well be the defensive trio of Sa'id, Kawkab, and Qahwa. The Jerboas are lucky to have such a robust core at the back. It buys the rest of the team so much space and time, in particular the emerging and likely equally talented midfield trio of Shafuq, Hajar, and Sabar. Sabar has run this team's pass distribution for ages and is happy to get some help, no matter if it's from an unlikely club as Al-Hudud, with Hajar first appearing on the scene and later Shafuq as well. The three are perfectly capable to start attacks and break down opponents but like to have a fourth member as a janitor, to allow Shafuq some room to dribble, Hajar to send ambitious passes, you know the drill. Up front things have been a little shallow, that is, until the Saatir-Hamdan duo, which means that Irithoren finally have a capable front duo as well. As unproven as they are (and the same goes for half the midfield), it's all eggs in one basket - these guys and girls are the future of Irithoren, no ifs, ands, or buts. If you ask the average fan, that is. And if you ask that same fan about the team's chances this CE? Title or bust.

THE COLONY OF THE FHULGHAMOUS PENINSULA
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula (Full-Gah-Moose) was first established on 6 December 2008, when Fleftic explorers landed on what was then a previously undiscovered continent. These explorers landed on a large peninsula that they named Fhulghamous because of its rich and lush green forests. One of the explorers then fell into an old mine shaft while exploring the peninsula and discovered that the entire peninsula was lying on top of one of the biggest diamond deposits ever discovered by mankind. Once the explorers announced their discovery to the Fleftic government, the Democratic Republic Army Corps of Engineers was quickly dispatched to help speed up the establishment of the colony by helping in constructing settlements and assisting in constructing mining facilities to extract the diamonds within the land.

The Colony of the Fhulghamous Peninsula was officially established as a colony of the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft on 6 September 2010 following the signing of Democratic Republic Act No. 2340. The colony's capital would be Port Thimpodopoulos, named after Sergeant Major Pythagoras Thimpodopoulos of the Army Corps of Engineers, who tragically died of a heart attack during the construction of the settlement that would eventually bear his name. Today, Port Thimpodopoulos has a population of ten million, accounting for just under half of the total population of the colony. Other cities in the colony were Besanza, Tadoki, Haritzaga City and Thereisnogodabad, home of Multiverse Premier League club Thereisnogodistan FC.

The colony is under the leadership of Governor-General Petrarchos Kulbano, brother of Minister of Colonial Affairs Demetrios Kulbano. His rule saw the Fhulghamous Peninsula's ascent to being one of the most economically-productive colonies of the Democratic Republic, but due to the colony's distance from the mainland Governor Kulbano is slowly beginning to treat the colony as his own personal fiefdom. This was one of the reasons why he had decided to send forth a petition to send a national team to the Di Bradini Cup, the Multiverse's top under-21 football competition. Unfortunately due to some last-minute troubles, the Fhulghamous Peninsula's team was not allowed entry into the Di Bradini Cup, leaving many people in the colony a bit unfulfilled. But when another chance to send forth a national team revealed itself, Governor Kulbano was quick to submit his team's entry, and this time he made sure that the wouldn't miss out on another chance at participating in an international competition.

HOME STADIUM (ARENA MARINOS, PORT THIMPODOPOULOS)

Arena Marinos is the home ground of both FC Marinos Thimpodopoulos, which plays in Abanhfleft's Premier League (first level of the Fleftic football league system) and the Fhulghamous Peninsula national football team. It has a total capacity of 35,673 spectators. Now back in service after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake caused part of the stadium's roof to collapse and devastated the capital city of the colony, necessitating a lot of repairs.

Richard Dawkins Park has a capacity of 23,171 spectators. Following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that devastated Port Thimpodopoulos, all Fhulghamous Peninsula home matches were held in RDP in Thereisnogodabad while repairs were being made on Arena Marinos. With Arena Marinos now fixed, both the Fhulghamous Peninsula Football Association and Thereisnogodistan FC have reached an agreement in which RDP will serve as an alternate venue for national team games in recognition for the time that Richard Dawkins Park served as the home stadium of the national team following the earthquake.

Note on age classifications:

Xat’i and Pterons mature faster than humanoids but also have shorter lifespans. They reach adulthood around the age of 3, considered at their prime between 5 and 15, will think about retirement around their mid-to-late 20’s and their life expectancy is around 55.
Note on gender classification:
Gender in Paradystopia falls into three categories across five classifications. The categories are male, female and non-binary, with male and female both subdivided into cisgendered and electively gendered. As such, 'Mc' equates to a cisgendered male, and 'Fe' would equate to an electively gendered female (or, more commonly known throughout the multiverse as a transgender woman.) For the most part, the average Paradystopi* would only state their gender category when asked. Full classifications are included here for completeness.

*By average Paradystopi, I refer to the human population. The Pterons and Xat'i will just give their biological sex and couldn't really care less if their perceived gender appears contrary to this. Neither species' natural language features gendered pronouns and their views of biological sex bears little relevance to them beyond if it's pertinent to know whether one could or could not nurse their young.

Xat'i(Fc) - 3 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Sjiu is a truly outstanding goalkeeper, and the best player in the Paradystopi squad by a fair margin. With, for want of better terminology, cat-like reflexes and agility, her shot-stopping is second-to-none. Despite her relatively small stature, her ability to pounce through the air means she can dominate her penalty area against strikers twice her size as well as cover a much larger percentage of her net than would seem possible in one-on-one situations. Her main drawbacks are that she enjoys playing the sweeper keeper role and has been known to be caught in no-man's-land when the team lose possession, and that she will almost always opt to punch the ball away rather than catch it which can lead to giving possession straight back to the attackers.

One has to feel for av Steinbruddet and Jonsson. Both very capable goalkeepers in their own right, but when it's someone as technically gifted, and young, as Sjiu wearing the number 1 jersey, you have to wonder if they will ever get any international caps. That said, both of these two as training partners can only help Sjiu develop her game further.

Penguin(Mc) - unk - Xat'i Paradystopi
There are few words to summarise Jim, though 'An enigma in penguin form' is probably the closest. Outwardly, there would seem to be little remarkable about this penguin and his inclusion in the team liable to be disregarded as 'Paradystopia being Paradystopia'. However, Jim is brilliant at what he does, and that is being in the right place at the right time. You think your attacker is in space? Nope, there's Jim. You think your winger just made a beautiful cross-field pass to switch play and continue the attack? Nope, there's Jim. You think you've got a midfielder free on the edge of the box to hammer home a screamer? Yeah? Nope, Jim's there to block it. How he does it, no-one has the foggiest but you can be utterly certain that he will be a frustrating thorn in the side of your attempts to attack us.
Jim is the team's vice-captain, despite no-one being able to understand him. Now that's Paradystopia being Paradystopia ...

3. LCB - Patrick Smith-Cocker
Human(Mc) - 32 - SC Oldetoun New Newetoun
As the senior figure of the FLoP9's most miserly defence, it is hoped that Patrick Smith-Cocker can bring some of his defensive knowledge and experience to a rather scant Paradystopi back line. A classic no-nonsense centre back who's sure to make any attacker he's marking well aware of his presence. A strong, sturdy and reliable workhorse at the back who'll put his body on the line for his team without a second thought.

4. RCB - Janika van der Stedd
Human(Fe) - 28 - AC Urbsclavoszydensanorjens
The lynchpin of the Ossies back three, Janika van der Stedd is a wily and tactically astute defensive player. She is a skillful tackler, as well as being known in her home team for having good vision to play the right passes to start attacks flowing. She is particularly useful from long range dead ball opportunities being more than capable of whipping a free kick from around the half way line dangerously into the box. Whilst she's unlikely to take any of the closer range free kicks, she definitely an option to attempt to hammer home a screamer from 35 yards out.

Of the defensive substitutes, they are mostly like-for-like switches for the human players. Experienced centre backs in Zidarić and Fish, whilst a bit of international experience for the younger Doggle. Karen is in no way comparable to Jim, but given she is his partner, her selection is thought to be in part to keep Jim in good spirits throughout the tournament.

5. CM - Kiaren Schlippe (c)
Human(Mc) - 24 - New Newetoun Saltquarry SC
With Anja Bortland still not being fully fit after being attacked by Erroropolis' resident goalkeeping baboon in the domestic league, Kiaren Schlippe, as an already capped national team player, takes over the reins as captain in a hope to maintain a little consistency from the squad's WC99 campaign which went better than anticipated. Kiaren is an able defensive midfielder with invaluable skills as a playmaker, and whose aptitude for long passing makes him an asset to the team. It is hoped that he can grow into his new role of captain though there are a few question-marks over whether he will rise to the challenge, or crumble under the responsibility.

6. CM - Leonard Lugga
Human(Mc) - 22 - AC Urbsclavoszydensanorjens
Though usually a right midfielder for AC Urbsclavoszydensanorjens, Leonard Lugga finds himself a first team place in his secondary position in the middle of the field. This seems a rather strange choice, especially given that he takes the spot over regular Oldetoun centre midfielder Clifford Stone. A possible justification for this is the physical presence Leonard brings to the midfield. He is a bold and powerful player who isn't afraid of imposing himself upon opponents and taking his tackles a little on the 'meaty' side. Providing his can tweak his ability at crossing the ball into playing long balls forward, he should be able to supply ample threats to account for his selection.

7. LM - Sosjian
Xat'i(Mc) - 9 - SC Oldetoun New Newetoun
Of all the Xat'i in the squad, Sosjian is probably the most tactically aware. This could well be due to him playing his football in a predominantly humanoid team rather than amongst other Xat'i. As a result, he is also the most likely of the Xat'i (other than Sjiu) to actually seek to pass when in possession. He has a strong positional awareness which, coupled with a rapid turn of speed, could see him winning interceptions in enemy territory or simply being quick to strike on a careless pass. Given that his sheer pace alone will make him a nuisance to mark, the decision to play him as a winger could be a masterstroke.

8. RM - Hleqrru
Xat'i(Mc) - 6 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Retaining his place in the national team, Hleqrru now finds himself on the right flank. Given the laissez-faire approach to formations of the Xat'i, this is no major issue. Hleqrru is at his best when given the opportunity to challenge defenders and move with the ball, and it is hoped that playing on the wing will provide this. As he is used to playing a more defensively-minded role within Xat'i Paradystopi, he is the most likely of the Xat'i starters to actually track back and will likely gravitate to something more akin to a wing-back. Expect to see him tirelessly chasing opponents the full length of the right wing, looking to gain possession and begin his own attacks.

As with the defenders, the midfield replacements are there-or-thereabouts like-for-like options. Soks and Olii can switch in for Sosjian or Hleqrru, and Stone and Blade can switch in for Lugga or Schlippe. Given the high intensity nature of the Xat'i tactics, it's very feasible that the two Xat'i subs will see playing time. There's also the possibly they could see some playing time upfront depending upon how a match pans out.

Forwards
First Team

9. CF - Sebastien Borgen
Human(Mc) - 27 - SC Oldetoun New Newetoun
Sebastien Borgen has had a solid start to the season with Oldetoun and firmly warranted his place as national team centre forward. An archetypal big, strong forward, his height and strength allow him to act as a target man as well as hold up play in the opposition half and act as a go-between amidst the dynamic attacks and mazy runs of the Xat'i. One of his best attributes is his intelligence; knowing when he can draw a foul, knowing when to release a team-mate to best foil the offside trap, knowing whether or not to take that extra step. He can be a handful to fend off, and with all the Xat'i attacking options, that's the last thing any opponent needs.

10. LF - Rhiagr
Xat'i(Fc) - 7 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Like her other Xat'i brethren, Rhiagr is quick, agile and without fear when challenging opposition defenders. Where she distinguishes herself from the other Xat'i is her ability in the air. With jumping prowess that rivals Sjiu, Rhiagr can prove very difficult to contain during corners, or wide dead-ball opportunities and can often somehow rise above the crowd to send the ball goalward.

11. RF - Rsheu
Xat'i(Mc) - 3 - Xat'i Paradystopi
Despite his young age, Rsheu is making waves up front for Xat'i Paradystopi and currently (at time of writing) leads the top scorers list for the FLoP9. Nippy and tenacious, he is a tricky customer to deal with for even the most experienced defender. On top of this, he possesses a deft finish and an unquenchable thirst for scoring. Some question his lack of maturity and the hubris this brings but when he can back up his talents with cold, hard statistics in the league, it's hard to make a worthwhile argument for not having him in the squad.

Iona Schlippe finds herself dropped to the bench for the Campionato Esportiva, though she is certainly earmarked as an impact sub who could bring a different style of play to the field than Borgen. Of the other three, they're all youngsters who've made strong starts in the league and if they can translate that youthful vigour and enthusiasm to the international stage, well, who knows what's possible.

Manager

Pepé Papa
Human(Mc) - 58 - of Qyzzyxzyan Draconic Territories
Very little is known about Pepé Papa beyond that he apparently used to be the Pope of one of the islands off to the north of Paradystopia. Something about a dragon too. His spur-of-the-moment hiring has raised many eyebrows amongst the Paradystopi footballing community who, whilst hoping for something surprising, are inclined to think that the hiring committee just found some random junkie to put in charge because the ensuing chaos will likely make for good television, or something like that. There's actually a good many conspiracy theories doing the rounds as to whom this mysterious new manager is with the singular point they agree on being that 'former Dragonpope' is just too stupid to be the truth.

Style Modifier = ±0

ICly, think of our style mod as more of a +3 or +4. However, given that we have an exceptional goalkeeper in Sjiu, and the team have had a relatively short space of time to gel and work on Pepé Papa's tactical stylings, I see this as equating OOCly to a neutral style modifier.

Whilst Pepé Papa might have some overblown and in-depth tactical explanations of how he expects the team to play, the main gist of his approach boils down to a semi-aggressive Route One strategy with an emphasis on expansive Wing Play. We will be constantly looking to play long balls to either release one of the Xat'i players in behind your defence, or give one of your defenders the unenviable task of challenging Sebastien Borgen in the air, who'll be looking to feed a Xat'i player into space. We aim to run your defence ragged until they invariably (hopefully) break.
Defensively, we will fall back to sit and soak up pressure, but with an eye on the next quick breakaway once we reclaim possession. As such, we are probably a little susceptible to counter-attacking teams (or counter-counter-attacks), but we're confident enough in our goalkeeper and Jim's peculiar ability to be in the right place at the right time to nullify the majority of these threats.

Generalised roles:

#1 & #2:
Sjiu and Jim will play as sweepers at the back, marshalling the defence and covering where needs to be covered.

#3, #4, #5, & #6
Smith-Cocker, van der Stedd, Schlippe, and Lugga will form a sort of defensive square. They will try to maintain their positions more rigidly than others on the field, though can flatten out into a back four if the situation calls for it. They will look to hold possession between themselves until one of them spots an appropriate long-ball.

#7, #8, #10, & #11
The roving Xat'i attack force. Sosjian and Hleqrru will look for spaces out wide to run into. Rhiagr and Rsheu will look for any spaces behind your defence and opportunities to beat the offside trap. Good luck marking all four of them. They will press your players in your half too. If we could get them to track back and pitch in with defensive duties reliably, we'd have a truly problematic team for any opponent.

Sebastien Borgen's role is kind of a utility forward. Generally, he'll act as a classic centre forward but depending on what the Xat'i are up to, he could also drop into more of a false 9 position, or some sort of attacking sweeper.

South Newlandian CE39 Roster

Manager: HAN Ruoyang (Yuezhou), 65
It’s a new era for South Newlandia. After a dismal showing at CE37, the Elephants and previous manager Dale Hartford-Phelps decided to part ways. Despite struggling in recent tournaments, the Zwangzugian remains the only coach to win a major title with the Elephants. The defensively-minded manager had gotten his big break with Beian Athletic, before finding success at the national team level with Guanacasteca for almost a decade. Tactically, he runs a 3-5-2 formation. He tends to rely on a center back working as a deep-lying playmaker; coincidentally the same system that had gotten him success in his playing days. This is his fourth tournament with the Elephants, and after initially leading them to a strong showing in Riena and Doubeia, the team has struggled to follow up on it – getting grouped in Limey George was followed up by narrowly avoiding that fate at home. Now, with an unprecedented second consecutive home tournament, he’s expected to deliver.

Expected starting eleven:

GK: Harold King (24) SC Oldetoun New Newetoun (Paradystopia)
King immediately getting a chance as the captain of the team after very limited exposure in Paradystopia says nothing good about the other options, but King has legitimately established himself as a great goalkeeper with SC ONN. The Lexen City native has collecting clean sheets like Pokemon Cards, and while his competition can be questioned, that’s not true for his powerful long goal kicks and reaction time.

LCB: Matias Vaz (28) Zeiven City (The Kytler Peninsulae) CAPTAIN
Vaz is playing more of a winger role with Zeiven, but will be expected to stay back more with the Elephants. Still, his great performances in the Peninsulae have more than earned him a starting spot with the team. He’s not really a threat with headers on corners or free kicks, but he can aid with some counter-attacks if he’s allowed to. He’s also expected to mentor a very young defense around him. It’s a lot to ask, but Vaz has conquered many challenges before.

CB: Rose Graham (25) Goetia Psyche (Doubeia)
Returning to the squad after missing the last tournament, Graham moved away from Fortuna Sigewinne after a solid season. An accurate passer and solid-enough defender, the young Elephant is shouldering a lot of expectations as a first-time starter.

RB: Robert Daman (25) Bul Khungur Miners FC (Tikariot)
Daman originally left the country as a left back, but has taken up a lot more offensive roles in recent years with Bul Khungur, running through the usual development cycle in reverse. Has surprised many by being a South Newlandian and actually valuable for a Tikariotian club after spending many years learning in their Academy. The Elephants will experiment with him at Right Back, believing that to be his natural fit in the squad – an optimistic projection.

LDM: Benjamin-Patrick Walker (24) Selini Ironworks (Doubeia)
“Benpat” Walker impressed with the Ironworks as a very solid midfielder who can also be a goal threat. The Elephants will ask him to pivot a little more defensively, but are hopeful the Ratzupalfu will take this in stride. He’s had a lot of history with injury, but the Ellies are hoping he’ll make it through the tournament in one piece.

RDM: Adrian Sommer (21) Akinis FC (Bohr)
Maybe the biggest revelation of the season among South Newlandians, Sommer hit the ground running in the Bohr Championship. The youngster has earned rave reviews for his attitude and consistency, and marks yet another young defender to hopefully usher in a new era for South Newlandia. Experience is a concern, with Sommer being asked to learn a lot on the job, but he certainly has the upside to deliver.

LW: Christian Lange-Parker (32) Orchideeën (Taxhavn)
Lange-Parker has surprised many as a very real goal-threat in Taxhavn. A short, quick, clever midfielder, Lange-Parker can break down the sideline or inside to try and create himself with his dribbling skills. He certainly played a key role for his team, and has become one of the longest-tenured players for the Pachyderms quite fast.

AM: Alessio Lombardo (31) Nova Aegis (Saint Eleanor)
Lombardo left Elephant Valley to join one of the only even smaller countries that were an option. He’s been good for Nova Aegis, who haven’t been as good to him, and has become both a scoring threat and good passer for the pachyderms. The Elephants hope for him to be a key figure in the middle.

RW: Patrick McMora Jr. (23) VV Szbedansk (Kanzlia)
McMora Jr. is the son of one of the best South Newlandian football players of all time, who also played on the right side of the midfield. He’s been a consistent scoring threat, although a very raw one, in Kanzlia, and has been improving rapidly there to quickly become one of the Elephants’ best players. Inexperience still shines through on occasion, but he’s proven he can fill the shoes of his father, who played a role in some of the biggest South Newlandian successes of the past.

ST: Russ Shaw (38) Jaglan Royals (Squornshelan Remnant States)
Shaw semi-recently joined the Royals for a healthy sum, and is returning to the squad for the first time since he still played in Kelssek. The last remaining connection to a different age of Elephants football, he’s mostly here to provide some much-needed expierince to a squad that’s as young as it hasn’t been in a long time, but he can definitely still score a goal here and there in the right circumstance.

ST: Aadi Seidel (28) Zeiven City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
Seidel has been performing admirably in the Kytler Peninsulae, becoming a strong scoring threat for Zeiven, finding a way one time after another. There are some weaknesses to his game that will have to be worked out with experience, but he’s got the talent to be an Elephants’ main-stay. With his extraordinary fitness, he’ll rarely ever be subbed off. This campaign will also be the second for him as the captain of the squad, having displayed great leadership abilities in the past at his young age.

Bench:
Note that the Elephants are carrying 26 players, just as most other teams. However, some substitutes that are unlikely to play a material role have been omitted.

LB: Alexis Tuskie (32) Kirkenes FC (Kelssek)
Tuskie never really hit her ceiling as a talented left back, but remains a fan favourite with South Newlandian fans. After some time in Sylestone, she did well in Kelssek, too, but has tapered off a little, and will give way to some younger players in this campaign.

CB: Raghav Pal (21) Florley Garden City (The Kytler Peninsulae)
The Elephants are clearly hoping lighting will strike again with Elephants in the Peninsulae, Raghav Pal has all the physical tools to be great, but hasn’t quite put it together yet in Rushmore. He’ll have a chance to learn from some not-much-more experienced players and maybe earn his first minutes on the big stage.

RB: Olomunyak Bano (26) Blubeck FC (Katzeburg)
Bano wasn’t able to prevent Blubeck from finishing last (a lot of these players have poor performance of their club team in common. Wonder what that’s about), but he still proved to be a very solid player just a little bit east of South Newlandia. He’s been a KNL pioneer for South Newlandians, with others sure to follow where he went.

ST: Lia Suarez (18) New Newetoun Saltquarry SC (Paradystopia)
A late addition to the squad, so late she didn’t even make it onto the lineup graphic, Suarez stunned everyone with her rapid development with NNS SC. She’s shown an eye for the goal and an ability to finish as well as play any role her team needs her to. The FLoP9 is not the most respected league in the multiverse just yet, but Saltquarry has outperformed expectations, with Suarez playing a huge role in that. Might receive more minutes than expected.

Kevredigezh Gouvanarchais de Mell-Droad
Gouvanarch Football Federation

After decades of international dormancy the Kevredigezh Gouvanarchais de Mell-Droad has decided to bring Gouvanarchais football back to the international stage. Football is the by far and wide biggest sport in Gouvanarch, yet there is no benchmark as to its strength. This is about to change. Tactically Gouvanarch is fairly conservative, sticking to a solid 4-4-2, but they are trying to learn from this tournament to potentially gain more tactical flexibility. They managed to get past the group stages of both Wonder Cup and Baptism of Fire, but both times failed to advance in the knock-out stages, after which they pulled back into the shadows.

Kamijiro Roster for Campionato Esportiva 41

Once again at the helm is experienced manager Raiji Kagawa, who has now led the Lightning Isles to a knockout-stage win at the World Cup. Two of them, actually, before being knocked out by eventual champions Audioslavia, 1-0. The upshot? Their Round of 16 win was against rivals Vdara, who's manager had notably broken an antique door at the JirōSekai once.

But this time, the team's much different. Post-collapse of the Empire and the rise of the Monarchy led to what can only be described as 'tense relationships' between the departments, again. So, it's another cycle in which only Miraisaki players will be called up. That said, the Miraisaki natives make up most of the roster as-is. The Starting XI & Formation

How does it work? Well, since both of the wingbacks are quite offensively gifted, the idea is to allow them freedom to roam upfield when the team has the ball. In order to do this and prevent the massive overload that a 2-at-the-back would be vulnerable to, the defensive midfielder slots between the two center-backs to become a third defender. The defensive midfielder is a vital role in this attack, as he must have high awareness of the situation and be able to read counter-attacks quickly, or else the whole thing falls apart.

The primary rotations are Kyōji Kirishima coming on in place of Saiichi Demizu, Keigo Nakaji coming on for Kento Kanazono and Hiro Kumakiri coming in for either Tōshi Kameda or Azuma Kogushi, depending on who's more tired at the time.

With a new look, the team returns to their second Campionato Esportiva, still led by enigmatic manager Udo Kluckhohn. Nobody really knows much about him, or where he came from, or whether he even knows anything about the sport of football at all. He managed to earn wins in 2 of 5 games in the previous Campionato Esportiva, which to be fair was 2 more wins than anybody else expected from a team managed by him, but he's primarily known for his obsession with chickens (and other poultry), refusal to answer journalists' questions at press conferences, and uncanny ability to seemingly drop off the face of the earth between tournaments.

Kluckhohn's team is backstopped by the equally eccentric goalkeeper Hieronim Kalinowski. Aside from his work on the pitch, Kalinowski is primarily known for reciting the entire Chanson de Roland in flawless medieval French at a media appearance and refusing to allow reporters to leave until he had completed. Indeed, he prefers to communicate entirely in the French language (French is not widely spoken in the country) despite not having any known French relatives, having lived in a French-speaking nation, or having any other connection to the language.

Among the defense, Inocenty Kaczka stands out for Kluckhohn's loyalty to him as a player despite a lack of any identifiable stand-out ability that would warrant his continued inclusion on the national team. When pressed about this Kluckhohn responded with the appropriately-avian statement that "even the ducks grow silent when the vineyards are filled with wine" and refused to elaborate further.

For the midfielders and forwards little needs to be said. Kluckhohn views them as unimportant and prefers a defense-first style of play centered around getting the ball to Kaczka. Attacking midfielder Karł Wołoszin and striker Marek Zawadzki have excellent chemistry and are arguably among the best natural goalscorers the country has produced. Despite this, the team's style of play has been heavily criticized for handicapping the team's strongest players in preference to open favoritism towards weaker players from their manager. Despite this, sports fans in the nation care primarily about hockey and so Kluckhohn's job is widely viewed as safe for the time being no matter how poorly the team performs.

Once the result was announced, parliament was dismissed for the day. Laurina Hale, visibly displeased by the outcome, made her way to one of the quieter lounges of the parliamentary complex without much fuss. She needed a moment to cool off, afterall, this was a historic rejection for the Navy. As she made her way quietly to her preferred lounges, to her surprise Prime Minister Aletta Nowaki was already there, waiting.

The two were close, but more akin to professional acquaintances rather than genuine friends. Aletta is Laurina's boss after all. But for whatever courtesy is built up between them, one is a seasoned Navy officer and the other a grounded civilian. A 'landlubber' as Laurina likes to say. Whilst the two share similar views with social and economic reform, when it came to matters of the Navy, the two could be divided at times.

The Blue Cats are the national representatives of Katzeburg, which are entering their third Campionato Esportiva and their first as co-hosts. The team is nicknamed after an incredibly rare breed of the country's national animal, the cat, which was long-rumoured to exist in small numbers in the Campbellnia National Park along the country's north-east coast.

While Katzeburg is a young nation, football has solidified its place as the most popular sport in the nation, thanks in no small part to the heroics of the national team on the multiversal stage. Initial hotspots of the sport were in the more industrial north of the nation, encompassing the nation's central capital Katzestadt, the heavy industrial port city of Inverhaven, and the north-eastern logging city of Axmund - all of which will host CE football as part of this edition of the competition - but the growing status of the game's popularity has seen teams from all across the country sprout up in recent years, as seen by the ever-growing number of teams entering the Katzeburgian Cup, the nation's domestic cup competition, achieving a high mark of 64 teams in the just-completed fourth season.

The national team's first ever manager Becka Haberkorn leads the nation into her third Campionato Esportiva as manager, currently overseeing the side until at least the end of the WC100 cycle. Haberkorn was originally appointed following a handful of successful seasons overseeing an Inverhaven local side, but has been at the helm for every single one of the country's 92 national games to date, including high marks of a World Cup appearance in WC 98, and runs to the final four of the 91st Cup of Harmony and the previous edition of the Campionato Esportiva.

Leading the side on the field will be Katzestadt AFC keeper Ry Whinery, who has been one of a number of regulars permeating through the starting lineup since the formation of the national squad. Other ever presents include her domestic teammate Serena Plank, who has played in every single national team match to date, as well as the national hero Drake Wruck, who retains his spot in the squad despite a downturn in the fortunes of his domestic side Katzestadt Rovers. Wruck has been a goalscoring machine for the Blue Cats, netting 75 times across his 92 caps for the nation and is the top scorer for Katzeburg in the Campionato Esportiva, with 13 goals to date across two tournaments.

Axmund City midfielder Elmer Spears is one of the nation's brightest young talents, and at just the age of 19 he has secured 85 caps for the nation, showing a maturity and skill well beyond his years which has proven vital to the team's rise up the rankings, and he has retained his spot despite a struggle for league form as Haberkorn looks to make wider changes to the squad ahead of the nation's first hosting duty.

The Katzeburgian National League is the top flight of Katzeburgian football, encompassing 16 teams across North Katzeburg. Katzeburgian clubs are rapidly growing in interest as a result of the national team's success, with a growing coefficent and funds being unlocked for further stadium and game development, a warchest which recieved even more additions upon the successful bidding for the Campionato Esportiva. The sport is also growing on the field as well, with consistent performances and deep runs in multiversal competition, including Katzestadt AFC claiming the nation's first ever international trophy with success in the Associations Trophy in recent seasons.

The league is currently a separate entity from the national football federation, the KFF - a divide which has caused no lack of controversy to date. The first chairman of the KFF, Brendan Kerr, was infamously forced to step down from his role during the nation's first World Cup cycle after it emerged he was leveraging his position as an MP to try and force the developing North Katzeburgian Railway to avoid the towns of Windorf and Coalbrook should they look to enter a team in the national league.

He was replaced by Sebastian Hawthorn heading into the World Cup 98 cycle, with the former high ranking judge on the Katzeburgian circuit helping solidify the groundwork for the national setup to expand beyond the main national team, and utilise government funding to bring large scale expansions of grounds and grassroots football in the nation. As a result, the KFF have quietly faded from view for the most part, with the reputational harm of Kerr seemingly faded amidst a well-spring of support for the national setup thanks to the side's heroics.

"Stable of Bolters" - Haberkorn unveils Katzeburg squad for Campionato Esportiva

It is fair to say that Katzeburg are no longer the new kids on the block when it comes to Esportivan football. The co-hosts for the 41st edition of the competition have in recent years shot up the rankings thanks to strong appearances in multiversal competition, and the third-ranked side would be enjoying their first Pot 1 appearance in any other competition.

But as national team manager Becka Haberkorn stated in her CE squad announcement, the team "cannot afford to rest on their laurels" heading into a hugely important competition, the first held on Katzeburgian soil.

Despite the fact the side made the final four at both the last Campionato Esportiva and the more recent Cup of Harmony in Tikariot and The Kytler Peninsulae, Haberkorn has opted to use the home advantage to reshape the squad in a major sense, calling up nine uncapped players into the 25-person team and leaving out some long-standing players who failed to impress during the most recent league campaign.

Long-term starters Vera Horsfall and Faithe Colbert are the two biggest names to be cut from the squad, neither doing enough to impress Haberkorn in a weak season for the defending league champions in Katzestadt Rovers. Elicia Morton is another Rover to not make the cut, while regulars Deena Knepp (Axmund City), Katharine Howland (Barenwold), and Petra Moores (Shorham) all fail to make the squad after less than solid domestic campaigns.

Inverhaven Ironworks have seen a number of their players called up to the squad following a strong season in the league, with defenders Jerrold Dallas and Winton Burgstaller called up for potential debuts and Betsy Terry recalled to the squad after missing out on the nation's World Cup 99 qualifiers and Cup of Harmony runs.

Walton Hershey returns to the squad for the first time in a while after a strong season for Littleport seems him earn a place, while Jana Linton and Brandt Godfrey also make the cut from the Reds - two of Haberkorn's 'bolters' who have made the squad following a strong domestic season.

Danita Bannerman, a long-time striker for Barenwold, is in line to make her potential debut in the CE, after her best goal-scoring season on record for the club, while Cale Fux - the young defender at Katzestadt AFC - takes the starting spot of Inverhaven City's Erik Clarkson following a breakout season in the Royals backline.

At the team announcement, manager Becka Haberkorn said the side was an ambitious one hoping to do the nation proud on home soil.

"I will readily admit that this side is one full of risks," Haberkorn said. "But we've never advanced without taking the occasional risk, and this squad I believe is filled with nothing but the best players available to us at the moment and the ones who are capable of getting us over the line in such an important tournament as this one.

"The pressure is going to be on us no matter what, both through our roles as hosts and our position as a Pot 1 side, so if these players can rocket out of the gates and gel, we will be able to bring our best football to the table, which is all I can ask for at the end of the day."

Katzeburg kick off their Campionato Esportiva at the Katzestadt Arena with a clash against Tumbra, a side Katzeburg has not played since their ninth ever international a few cycles ago - Tumbra ran out 2-1 winners in the Silver Dragon Invitational back then; Katzeburg will be hoping to reverse the scoreline this time around.

The Gouvanarchais delegation touched down at Katzestadt International Airport under a sky the colour of old tin. Rain — more persistent than heavy — streaked across the windows of the arriving shuttle bus as it rumbled away from the runway, carting the national team of the Kevredigezh Gouvanarchais de Mell-Droad into the heart of the Esportivan spotlight for the first time in decades.

Inside the bus, the mood was a mixture of quiet curiosity and barely restrained excitement. For most of the squad, this was their first experience of real tournament football — not counting the early exits at the Wonder Cup and the Baptism of Fire. But this was Campionato Esportiva. Real competition. Real stakes. And judging from the crowd of camera phones snapping away through the drizzle as the bus pulled into the team’s compound in north Katzestadt, the locals were definitely taking notice.

The Quarters

The team had been billeted at the Hotel Kupferkrone, a quirky four-star establishment turned temporary base camp and training compound for Group A’s visiting squads. It came complete with an attached training pitch, a retrofitted tactical room (formerly the hotel cinema), and — unfortunately — wallpaper in some rooms that made Joceran de Cahaihnes briefly question whether he’d ingested hallucinogens on the flight.

“It’s like being stuck inside a lollipop,” he muttered to his roommate, Melisande Duval, who grinned and unpacked her boots on the bed next to him.

“There are worse things,” she said. “Like being stuck behind Barthelemy on karaoke night.”

Enter: Barthelemy de la Cormeilles

In the lounge, Barthelemy de la Cormeilles, 475-match veteran, all-time top scorer in the Tikariot Premier League, and alleged national treasure, was trying to figure out the hotel's vending machine. He wore flip-flops, a battered Baraldhur AFC hoodie, and the expression of a man prepared to wage war for a packet of salted peanuts.

"Look at this thing!" he barked to no one in particular. "Why do I need to scan my passport to get snacks?"

“It's not a passport scanner,” said Souveraine de Forcalquier, peering over his shoulder, gently nudging him. “It’s a barcode reader for hotel cards.”

He slapped the machine lightly. “Same difference. One gives me access to my room, the other to salty delight. Both sacred.”

Nearby, Ambroas de Montgomery had started a running tally in his notebook of "Weird Things Bart Says." He was already up to five, and they hadn't even started training yet.

Rain, Rumours, and the Rookie

Outside, the rain picked up — light now, but forecast to grow heavier in the coming days. A soggy welcome, but the team didn’t mind. Gouvanarchais football was all about grit, after all. Guts and gravel. Rain was practically a home comfort.

On the training pitch, Armelle-Nolwenn de Brélévenez-Kersanton, the teenage prodigy and youngest member of the squad, stood quietly by the sideline as the warm-up began. She was focused — always focused — eyes watching the veterans with the intensity of someone trying to read the game like a book.

She didn't say much.

She rarely did.

But Barthelemy had taken a shine to her the moment they met at pre-tournament camp.

“Kid,” he’d said, slinging an arm around her shoulder, “I’ve scored more goals than there are kinds of cheese in Gouvanarch. But you? You’ve got the touch. You ever need anything — training, tactics, a good fish pie — you come to me.”

“I don’t eat fish pie,” she’d replied flatly.

“Even better. That means more for me.”

Now, as she jogged alongside him in warm-up, Barthelemy nudged her with an elbow.

“Big stage coming up. Feeling nervous?”

“Not really.”

“Good. Because I am.”

She smiled, faintly. "You always talk this much?"

“Only when I like someone.”

The Dragoonspiel Incident

In the team cafeteria that evening, Giraude Archambault was telling the rest of the midfield unit the infamous story of the baked fish pie incident on the island of Dragoonspiel, home of the Ynsygard Chess Club.

“I swear,” she said, “I thought it was a fruit tart. Took one bite. Nearly saw God.”

“Was it that bad?” asked Gwenaëlle Fauvarque.

“Imagine salmon. Now imagine cheese. Now imagine both. Hot. In a pie.”

“Sounds like Ambroas’s cooking,” quipped Aleran de Varenchy.

From the corner, Catelin Desmargot, the team’s assistant coach, raised her voice.

“Alright, stories later! Lights out at 10, training at 8. You want to beat Natanians and Nosts, not eat them.”

The Night Before

Back in their rooms, the players settled into their new surroundings. In one, Barthelemy was watching reruns of old matches with Armelle-Nolwenn, pointing out little tricks — movements, feints, body angles — things she soaked up silently like a sponge.

"See that turn?" he said. "That one’s called the Gouvanarchais Shimmy."

"You just made that up."

"Everything great was made up once."

Tomorrow

Tomorrow, they’d face their first test — Natanians and Nosts, ranked eighth in the region. No one expected Gouvanarch to walk through this group, but the squad had other ideas. They weren’t here to make up the numbers.

They were here to make a mark.

In the quiet of her room, Armelle-Nolwenn pulled on her boots one last time before sleep, just to feel the weight of them. Just to remind herself she was really here.

And down the hall, Barthelemy scrawled a note on his door in bad marker pen:

“LEGENDS ONLY — Others welcome too.
PS: Bring snacks.”

SYLESTONE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

Campionato Esportiva 40

Located in the far east of Esportiva, Sylestone is an equatorial nation home to roughly 30 million residents and while the vast, vast majority are humans, Sentients and even a small cluster of elves live on specific areas of the island, which has a size of roughly 700,000 kilometres squared. For the very first time in the nation’s history, though, Mytanar football manager Mojmir Anac’s squad to the 34th Campionato Esportiva and following World Cup Qualifiers - marking the return of international football for Sylestone in over half a decade - was composed of both Sentients as well as humans. In ages past, managers would prefer to not mix the two races out of fear for how that would go and with the Sentient sides almost always receiving the opportunity to play in tournaments while the humans sat in front of their televisions and watches, the vast majority of the Sylestonean population began to become distressed about this obvious favouritism. In fact, aside from the one Campionato Esportiva in the Licentian Isles that saw the human side capitulate to one point from three matches, they never actually received an official go.

But upon the heralded return of Sylestone to football and football to Sylestone, the appointment of Mojmir Anac changed all of that. Although a match between a mixed XI against Quebec and Shingoryeo had occurred the year before as part of a friendly series containing some of the multiverse’s biggest names, last year’s 34th Campionato Esportiva marked the very first time the two races shared the same half of a football field in an official game, or larger tournament. Although a mini-cup between the Sentients, Evermark, Tikariot and Quebec and Shingoryeo in Chamberley that saw the hosts’ only points come in a 2-2 draw with Evermark, results ever since have been the exact opposite of disappointing, and culminated in Anac being nominated as one of five nominees for International Manager of the Year in one Testiculos and even more importantly, saw Sylestone qualify for their first World Cup.

In fact, aside from Sylestone’s first foray into the World Cup three years ago in Græntfjall (RIP) and Kelssek, there hasn’t been a single tournament where Mojmir Anac has not impressed. His first tournament with the Sentients was the 34th Campionato Esportiva four years ago, where the team’s only two losses came against eventual champions Tumbra - once in the group stage and a second time in the knockouts after Sylestone had pulled off a massive upset by knocking off Brenecia following an 8-2 triumph over Macbon. The following World Cup Qualifiers are technically Sylestone’s best ever, recording 44 points in 22 games with a single digit in the goals conceded column… until Huayramarca took over Chamberley by storm in what ended up as an 8-4 shellacking over two playoff legs. However, two years later and backed by a fourth place finish in a home Campionato Esportiva alongside another strong World Cup Qualifying campaign, Anac’s side were not about to make the same mistake against Nyowani Kitara. Instead of mimicking their opponents style of football, they held their own as Riley Strathfield’s second half goal proved the difference in Græntfjall, sending the Sentients through to their first World Cup just three years after their return to the international scene.

After four wildly successful campaigns across the regional and multiversal levels, it was about time Mojmir Anac suffered his first failure. And even in this case, it’s still a tournament that ultimately garnered more praise than criticism, particularly internationally. Although they were out after their opening two fixtures, a pair of 1-0 hard fought 1-0 losses to Ko-oren and Eura were hardly anything to laugh about - although the better team won both encounters, either result could have swung the other way and no one would have batted an eye. It was the matchday three loss to the hosts that really hurt, the Sentients conceding six and even with a team composed primarily of second string players, that kind of result still hurts on the big stage.

But two years later, Anac would correct his wrongs. In front of a packed house in Chamberley for the country’s first ever home World Cup, the Sentients would once again face Ko-oren on matchday one and impressively, turn the result from two years before on its head as they walked away with their first ever three points on the biggest stage of all. Although a 3-0 loss to Mertagne in Pesfield complicated things, a hard fought 1-0 triumph over Baggieland would seal a round of 16 berth for the Sentients and send the entire nation into a frenzy.

It would only get wilder, too, when Abigail Jones cemented herself as a fan favourite with a delicate near post finish in the 28th minute to score the only legal goal of the game as Sylestone’s widely reputed back line got the job done the only way they knew how to. The final eight, with just Tumbra in the way of the semifinals and a genuine shot at the title.

Yeah, they couldn’t do it. The main culprits of Sylestone’s lack of success on the regional stage struck again, defeating the hosts 1-0 in a contest between Esportiva’s two best football teams, and two of the best defensive outfits in the modern world.

Then, the search for Mojmir Anac’s inaugural trophy with the Sentients has continued as the side has fallen in both the Campionato Esportiva final to Fhulghamous Peninsula and then in the International Confederations Cup final to Squornshelan Remnant States - a side Sylestone actually beat earlier in the tournament before falling when it mattered most. And so the wait for a trophy would continue, all the way to World Cup 96 as the chance to lift the holy grail of football rose again.

Needing to participate in a qualifying stage for the first time in four years, there were no signs of struggle as the Sentients smashed and bashed their way through the group, winning their first six games of twelve to put them clear and despite away draws to Zenic, Raspotochje and the Commonwealth of Baker Park in the second half, a thirty point haul from just twelve games saw Anac’s side comfortably qualify for the World Cup itself for the third consecutive time, this one being an all-Anaian affair held in Mertagne and Huayramarca. Drawn into a tricky group with nations with plenty of history in Kelssek and Audioslavia alongside plucky regionmates Josifovo, who were making their debut on the big stage after also blitzing their qualifying group, maintaining that unbeaten run would be incredibly tricky - in fact, there was a very real chance the Sentients would flunk out of the groups.

They made the semifinals, losing to Kelssek - a side from their very group that they drew with earlier in the tournament. And then, in 97, Kelssek would once again eliminate the Sentients, this time in the round of 32 after one of the cruellest draws imaginable that saw four members of the top ten in the world pitted against each other… all to play world number one Valanora in a quarterfinal they’d surely lose.

And then, the next Campionato Esportiva. A third final in four years… and a third loss. So yep, still no trophy. So much success under Mojmir Anac, and nothing to show for it…

MANAGER

Mojmir Anac (M, 44)
He’s a cult hero in Sylestone, and he fully deserves every skerrick of praise he has received. Not even a year into coaching, to have already been nominated as a candidate for the International Manager of the Year is truly spectacular and then to guide Sylestone to a third-placed World Cup finish against the odds was just as inspiring. A former centre back with Olympia Thessia, Anac has already built a reputation for coaching defensive-minded football, with a strong preference for letting opponents dominate and then attacking them on the transition, giving up possession but certainly not giving up goals. Originally, Anac was employed by the Sylestonean Football Association (SFA) to attempt to unify the two races but with the nation’s human footballers beginning to outshine their counterparts from the Sentient city of Kirkham, that’s becoming less and less of a problem each and every day. Anac will push his players to their limits and demand lots of them but at the end of the day, he used to be a player as well, and knows just how hard that can be day in, day out. That being said, the longer he goes without a trophy, the shorter the fan’s patience…

SQUAD

GK: Ryan Macleay (M - 32). Excellent all-round goalkeeper, with the startling reflexes to match.
GK: Luca Yali (M - 31). Good enough to be the number one for many national team, with good all round capabilities although can be inconsistent.
GK: Jacob Lonergan (M - 20). A very tall up and coming goalkeeper who rose from the lower leagues to prominence in Sylestone and is touted as Macleay’s long term replacement.

LB: Jade Wettenhall (F - 31). Fullback with a nice cross and a whippy corner, also very handy defensively.
LB: Harrison Curmi (M - 29). Very good defensively without Wettenhall’s forward output.
CB: Hugo Mornington (c) (M - 37). The long-time captain of the Sentients, arguably the best football player in Sylestone’s history. This will be his final tournament.
CB: Jake Blackall (M - 28). A big, burly defender with unsurpassed strength. Not too quick, which may be an issue alongside 37-year-old Mornington, but an excellent tackler. Has a tendency to get into arguments and fights.
CB: Ryder Yelverton (M - 27). Tall, slim and surprisingly strong. Probably better than Mornington (and definitely quicker!) and very comfortable with the ball at his feet.
CB: Joseph Governor (M - 23). Built more like a midfielder than a centre back, but his tackles are better than most. Extremely composed at such a young age and has surprising strength for his build.
CB: Natasha Dellit (F - 25). Just a solid centre back. No real weaknesses, and pure mental strength making up for a lack of supreme ability.
RB: Holly Statton (F - 28). Traditional fullback. Can be stand-in skipper. Quite short and agile.
RB: Matilda Molineux (F - 30). More of a wingback than Statton, often makes marauding runs down the right to pester the opposition defence.

LM: Jack Ryland (M - 31). Short, fast and can whip in a cross. Quick feet, too and a not so bad finish as well.
LM: Brock Wootton (M - 24). About time the exciting winger got his callup. Known for his flair, Wootton has turned many a League Number One defence into pieces. Needs to be more focused at times but a useful asset, especially off the bench.
CM: Jack Lawson (M - 31). The defensive midfielder of the generation. Composed, finds crazy passes, has it all. Just the guy you want as a playmaker. Still got it for another 5ish years.
CM: Charlotte Mahoney (F - 24). Another lower leagues graduate who has risen quickly through the ranks. Hard worker, sometimes goes under the radar but can pop up with something truly incredible just when required. In supreme form right now.
CM: Thomas Hellyer (M - 28). More of an attacking midfielder, with more flair and a desire to get forward and launch a shot at goal. Works really well with Lawson.
CM: Morgan Gallagher (M - 31). Classic box to box midfielder and is scary in form. Not so scary out of form.
CM: Connor Golding (M - 21). Creative young midfielder who has been playing first team football for Cleorough for some years now and has finally earned his callup. Very much like Thomas Hellyer with the way that he plays.
RM: Jack Moseley (M - 28). [i]Wasn’t even in the picture a few years ago and all of a sudden he’s starting. With quick feet, is he the solution to Sylestone’s problems down the right?
RM: Abigail Illingworth. Starts for Avondale City and can play basically across the midfield four and up front. Most likely to serve as Moseley’s backup, however, considering Sylestone’s lack of proper talent up the right wing.

CAM: Brett Sarcav-Jones (M - 26). Widely remarked amongst the best attacking midfielders in the world (well, was). Classic advanced playmaker to set up the striker and is more than capable defensively.
CAM: Kye White (M - 28). A nice flair outlet to have in the side, tends to linger on the ball but has a wicked free kick and long shot.

CF: Charlotte Eastwood (F - 30). A well-rounded striker with a mean finish and strong aerial ability.
CF: Matthew Freehill (M - 19): The Sylestonean striker wonderkid. Ridiculously talented but just lacks composure and consistency. Made his first team debut for AFC Droves in the League Number One at just 17 and is already their star man.
CF: Finn Freeling (M - 28). A bit more of a deep-lying striker, can also play in the playmaker role as well as going solo up front.

Another year, another Group Stage collapse at the World Cup. One has to question, as the Eshian press has many times, just how un-clutch a team has to be to qualify for the World Cup 5 times in a row and see next to no visible improvement out of any of it. Honestly, it's a sort of miracle in and of itself.

Coming back to the Campionato, however, is a breath of fresh air. For the first time, the Owls will be sporting an orange star above their crest, representing the miracle win they earned at last year's Sporting Festival in South Newlandia, and they're coming in to this one ready to do it all again. Not only that, but their group stage is being played in, you guessed it, South Newlandia again. Kenny Morgan, back for another ride in this historic 100th World Cup cycle, is more than ready to try to repeat in this tournament... and as for the team? You can't find a bunch more excited.

State Of The Night: Labour sweep presidency, hold on to largest party status in the Senate

With 88% of the results in and Election Night being mostly over, it's very clear that Labour were the ultimate winners of the super-election night, despite a major disappointment in the state of Harren.

Former Prime Minister Bertram Andrews successfully parlayed his name recognition and prominence to the Presidency, beating Grantfeldt Senator Melanie Coburn and former premier of Marcato Elaine Cho. His margin of victory was such that he will become the first President since Michael Woodward in 1900 to avoid a run-off election; he will also become the first President in the Republic's history to avoid a run-off election in a multi-cornered fight. Andrews has said that he will work on removing the run-off election, and changing the presidential election into an instant-runoff vote.

In the Senate, despite losing three seats, Labour cruised to an easy victory, remaining the largest party in the fragmented state. The biggest surprise of the night was Labour coming top in the vote count in the southeastern state of Dartmoor, beating the People's Party list by 16,000 votes despite Andrews trailing People's Party nominee Coburn by 170,000 votes in the People's Party-leaning state. The party also suffered a minor dip in their overall national vote, going from 40% to 38%, which Labour Senator-elect Andrew Bennett from Raleigh said they will "look into and reflect upon in our post-mortem."

In state-level races, fortunes were mixed; centrist premier Brendan Charlton managed to stave off a concerted challenge in the state of Gamaliel, and the party will finish top of the polls and be given the first opportunity to form government in the state of Grantfeldt. Yet they were unable to repeat the success they got in the neighbouring state of Marlsbruhe, and the party lost top spot to the People's Party in the state of Harren, whose campaign has been controversial for the usage of nativist and anti-feminist rhetoric. The new mixed-member proportional representation system, which was introduced for all 25 state-level parliaments, will see no party win a majority in any parliament, a sharp departure from the old style of politics; the party that finishes top in the polls will be handed the first chance to negotiate a government with other parties.

State Of The Night: People's Party disappointments exposes fractures in federal party

The People's Party were expecting to make some gains in the Senate elections, but will ultimately be disappointed as the party stayed stagnant on 81 seats and suffered a 2% drop in their national vote.

Speaking after the exit polls were revealed on TBC News, People's Party senator, leader of the small faction of moderate conservatives, and regular critic of the party leadership Edmund Monaghan said that the party "has yet to distance itself from the hard-right rhetoric of the Lawrence Newell era, and until we do so and realise that elections are won from the centre in Tumbra, we will lose and we will lose again." Monaghan, who was easily re-elected to his Senate seat in Gamaliel, has refused to rule out a potential challenge for the leadership of the party's Senate caucus.

On the state level, however, the very same hard-right rhetoric that Monaghan was supposedly railing against managed to eke out an election victory in the small Cape State of Harren, with the party winning 27 of the legislative assembly's 65 seats to Labour's 25, giving them the first opportunity to negotiate with other parties for a coalition. The party, which has undergone several identity changes since its formation as a "great merger of the right" in 2036, looks to be staring down yet another crossroads in its path once the Senate reconvenes in March.

State Of The Night: Minor parties make inroads; Alliance face huge losses

It was an overall successful night for the smaller parties in Tumbra, with Labour having to partner up with at least one other party to pass legislation once the Senate reconvenes — though realistically, it will have to negotiate with at least two.

The classical liberal Moderate Party, building upon their political momentum, gained seven Senate seats in the election, taking their tally from 18 seats to 25. They also topped the poll in their stronghold state of Iswilyn, where their party leader, Alex Kincardine, is from; having built up the party in what he has termed a 'centrist renaissance.' Speaking from the Moderate victory party in the Dorival suburb of Dylefield, Iswilyn, he proclaimed that "the victory of liberalism is here."

There were similar feelings across other election night parties across the country, from the Social Democratic victory party in Straton — which tripled its seat tally from two to six, and won just shy of 4% of the national vote — to the Republican victory party in Heatherton, Turvenal. The Republicans' performance was notable for blocking any prospect of the People's Party becoming the largest party in the upper chamber of the country's parliament, with the party gaining six seats from the 2038 election to take their tally to ten. Their allies in the northeast of the country, the Liberal Democrats, celebrated sending their first Senator — Adrian Han, who is projected to narrowly beat out incumbent Social Democratic senator Yasmin Akhtar for the twelfth seat in Napier, the country's most populous state.

No such feelings were had at the Progressive-Green Alliance election night party, however, which fell from twenty Senators to just fourteen. The environmentalist party was the target of almost every single party during the election campaign, with attacks from other left-wing parties painting the party as uncompromising ideologues who hampered development, and right-wing advertisments portraying the party as "loonies." One particular ad from the People's Party depicted the Alliance as holding up the building of an expressway over a family of newts.

Home Away from Home

If you were to ask an Eshian which football stadium (outside Eshialand itself) was the most like home for the Owls, you might be given a few answers. The Old Grounds in Lahaira is an option since it technically is in Eshialand, but the Seagulls do make a point out of making sure the mainlanders don't feel at home there at all. The EsportivArena in Newport would also get a few shouts, given that Newport is one of the more Eshian-aligned cities in the non-Eshian multiverse. The most answers by far, however, would be the Stadium of Friendship in Elephant Valley, South Newlandia.

You may have some questions as to why this could ever be the case, beyond the obvious reason that "it's the closest major active stadium to Eshialand City that isn't in Eshialand". All of these questions can be answered by three words. Campionato, Esportiva, and Forty.

Last year's CE, of course, featured many stadiums across South Newlandia, but for the most part, the Owls made their home base at the Stadium of Friendship. This was where their group stage had been played, and while that part of the tournament hadn't been so remarkable, two Eshian knockout matches were also featured there, and those made that stadium into a pilgrimage site for Eshian fans with the means to travel. One was the Round of 16 against TJUN-ia, which ended in a ridiculous 5-0 blanking that to this day cannot be explained, even by Josh Seametzle, seemingly the most knowledgable fan in the nation. The other match? The final, of course. Two of Eshialand's greatest successes of the last year being in this stadium has turned it into a home away from home to this squad, the place in South Newlandia where they feel the most comfortable. And now? They were back. Their group stage was being played here for a second year in a row, and they were so ready for this.

Never was there a time for them to be back at a comfortable "home" than this. Their last World Cup run was... well it wasn't so great. They wanted just one thing, not to suffer another horrible loss in the World Cup Finals, as they usually ended up doing. In this, they were actually somewhat successful, as they successfully avoided losing any matches at all! Unfortunately, the monkey's paw had to curl, and everyone else in their group (which was certainly a Group of Death by all standards) finished on 1-1-1, leaving the Owls in 4th place. While their performance was arguably a lot better than a fair few teams who did make it to the final 32, Eshialand would not be joining them, earning their 4th group stage exit in 5 qualifications.

This ending was a rough one for the team, as, with Eshialand drawing the Owl Derby against Tikariot (certainly a coup by any measure!) all they needed was for Kwrpania to not score a goal at the arse-end of stoppage time. Unfortunately for them, Magnws-rym takes no prisoners, and the 90+6th is a bitch. While this shot, one heard across the multiverse, was a miracle for the Kwrpans at Molin Park, this was enough to give the Eshian squad nightmares... in Lucas Meilling's case, quite literally. That match gave him a mental health breakdown so bad that he asked to be institutionalized to deal with his lingering problems, and as such he isn't returning for this CE. The rest of the team, while they also had some issues to deal with surrounding the results (being the first team in the 48 team era to get eliminated on 3 points is a tough pill to swallow, after all), their excitement for this tournament was enough to carry them forward.

In Lucas' absence, Keiar Forsen was named captain of the team, while Kaitlyn Olyred would be getting her first starts and Danny Palantis got his first call-up to the NT. His performance for the Western Spirit in Lliga 1 helped immensely in their promotion to Lliga 1, and while there were questions about why it was him getting called up and not Eddie Umbring, there wasn't an open spot for a striker just yet -- but that didn't preclude the possibility of him getting a start or two in World Cup Qualifying.

Now that we've talked a bit about the setting, the backdrop, and the squad, it's time for the fun part: the schedule. As had happened last year, Eshialand sort of gets shafted by the schedule, as South Newlandian scheduling doesn't mind uneven groups, allowing them to happen as long as bye days get filled up with intra-pot matchups against teams from another group. The Eshian press has never been a big fan of such things, since it seems to like ending in the Owls getting somewhat shafted, as usually the benefit of being a Pot 1 team is that you get an easier schedule, avoiding other titans of the sport. Instead, each of these last two tournaments has seen what would've been a bye day being replaced by a dangerous matchup against the second-ranked team in the region -- Lozho last year, and the Fhulghamous Peninsula this time. That matchup would be Eshialand's first in this tournament, but the big difference between last year and this one is that Eshialand, and not their opponents, were the defending champions, and they were set to be the favorites this year. That didn't change the fact that the Owls playing by far their scariest matchup on MD1 wasn't terrifying as hell, however.

As for the teams that were actually in their group, they'd first be playing 4th seeds Damukuni, in a rematch of last year's MD3. The Owls did win that match 2-1 last year, and it wasn't looking like too much of a problem. Then came the 5th-seeded NPU, in another match that likely wouldn't be of much issue, but after that was a fascinating one. Enter the obligatory semifinals rematch, enter Vielfaltig.

This was quite the interesting matchup in the last Sporting Festival, as it came alongside other Eshialand-Vielfaltig matches in the finals for both baseball and chess. While chess was a narrow, disappointing loss and baseball was an absolute farce, the football matchup was a convincing 3-0 win for the Owls. However, that was a year ago, and much has changed. Vielfaltig were more than valid threats now that they had proper experience, and with the added political tension between Vielfaltig (who have been accused of multiple human rights violations) and Eshialand (who are very much Not About That™) this matchup has been rated most likely to clear the bench by a country mile. (OOC Note: think RLStates WCQ Serbia-Albania vibes.) An absolute must-watch for those who love good football and chaos.

Lastly, there would be a special treat: South Newlandia! Nothing quite like a chance to play the Ellies on their home turf. While home pitch advantage would help make South Newlandia a tough challenge, the hope was that Eshialand would have enough momentum to keep the hype train chugging along into the knockouts, where they would inevitably face TJUN-ia in the Ro16 (face it, it's tradition!), but anything can happen in the CE. That's the joy of it all, really.

The final verdict on the group? Well, it would certainly be a group of death in a chess tournament, but even in football, there are plenty of surprises to be had. All that remains to be seen is how Margaret chooses to behave, and whether anyone dies on MD4.
