The city of Peeto buzzed with excitement and the streets in the central districts were alive with a beautiful collection of languages and laughter. This was the exact kind of joy that the Worldvision Song Contest brought to a nation. It was a sign that Worldvision season was upon us, and Polkopia's capital city was gearing up to host the largest music competition in the world!

Flags from every nation, whether they were participating or not, were carried by eager fans through the streets, fluttering in the windy evening's breeze. Cafés spilled over with fans donning flags as capes, their faces painted in the hues of their nations. Music—old classics from past Worldvision contests—blared from speakers in every corner of the city, mixing with the chatter of excited spectators. The air itself buzzed with a tangible anticipation of what was sure to be an incredible evening. For the people of Polkopia, this was more than just another regular contest. It had been thirty-two editions since they had last welcomed the world onto their soil, and they were here to make the most of it. While normally, Polkopians don't tend to be the rowdy type, tonight was an exception, and some of the loudest people on the street tended to be that of excited Polkopians, proudly waving their nation's flag through the streets.

Nestled along the outskirts of the city, Turon Arena stood, a gleaming, modern feat that hugged the boundary between a bustling city, and rolling hills. Thousands of fans, draped in their country's colors, moved in waves toward its gates, their voices forming a steady hum of excitement, only to explode into cheers as cameras panned over them. Inside, the arena was no less impressive than the outside. A massive LED screen framed the stage, pulsating with shifting colors and patterns. The stage itself, shrouded in dramatic mist, while the unmistakable logo of the contest pulsated on the screen. The air was thick with anticipation as spectators filed into their seats,

As the countdown to the show ticked closer, the crowd’s roar grew louder and louder. Fans waved flags frantically, chanting the names of their favorite acts. Though hundreds of languages filled the arena, in this moment, everyone spoke as one.

And then came darkness. A hush. The arena held their breath as the lights dimmed, the only illumination coming from thousands of phone screens held above audience members like stars in the night.

A single drumbeat boomed through the venue.

Worldvision had begun.

Davka Orchestra is a dynamic Polkopian musical duo known for their unique fusion of traditional Polkopian folk sounds with modern electronic beats. Comprising Katyrina Polončik as lead vocalist and Igor Arturyev, the musical producer, Davka Orchestra is one of Polkopia's fastest-growing EDM groups with their ability to bridge the past with the present in a way that feels both nostalgic and modern. Katyrina in particular has been praised by musical critics for her vocal techniques reminiscent of peasant communities in 19th and 20th century Polkopia. Through the group's revival of long-forgotten Polkopian traditions, Davka Orchestra hopes to introduce this art to the world as they perform as their nation's opening act for the Worldvision Song Contest.

As the music started to play, a LED pattern emerged on the stage floor resembling a traditional embroidered Polkopian pattern colored in vibrant reds and white hues. The patterns pulsed in sync with the music, glowing as if filled with a sort of ancient magic. Slowly, they began to shift, twisting and coiling into intricate shapes which grew until the entire stage floor was covered by this pattern. For a fraction of a second, the stage seemed empty, save for this emerging pattern, but in the next flicker of light, Katyrina appeared, standing at the very center as if she had been there the entire time, resulting in an enthusiastic cheer from the crowd. She stood completely still, though her hand was outstretched toward the heavens, fingers trembling slightly as if she were reaching for something beyond. Her traditional white garments blew in the wind behind her, flowing around her body as she sang the first verse. During the second verse, the camera panned around her and she tapped her feet to the beat of the song, while moving her hand around her body softly, letting her fingertips trace the fabric blowing around her.

Lyod uže tayatsya
The ice is already melting

I voda tečatsya pid nami
And the water flows under us

Sveta gotovi rozkvitayutsya
The flowers are ready to bloom

Slušai solov'i spayut
Hear the nightingales call

Lyod uže tayatsya
The ice is already melting

Kak i že naši zaboti
As does our worries

Itak, miy zasevayem naši polya
So we sow our fields

I molimsya za ryasniy urožay.
And pray for a bountiful harvest.

From the shadows at the edges of the stage, a dozen women emerged to join Katyrina on the main stage, stepping forward in unison. Each was adorned in traditional Polkopian garments, their flowing skirts embroidered with similar intricate patterns as the ones that pulsed beneath their feet, though each pattern was only slightly different from one another. The camera soared upward, revealing an aerial view of the stage. From above, the swirling LED embroidery began to pulse and glow in bright whites and golds, its colors intensifying, growing more vivid with each passing note. Meanwhile, the women, now gathered in a tight formation around Katyrina, lifted their heads and sang along. Their harmonies blended seamlessly with hers, and their voices rang out in a powerful choir.

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Spi so mnoi
Sing with me

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Spi so mnoi
Sing with me

A deep, thrumming EDM rhythm roared to life, immediately changing the elements of the stage. In perfect unison, every woman on stage began running in place, their feet striking the ground all at once. Their embroidered skirts swayed with each motion. The motion was relentless, almost primal, as if they were chasing something unseen, or being chased themselves. The LED embroidery beneath them fractured, the intricate patterns shattering into streaks of brilliant red and white light that shot upward into the air. In their place, bright blue lasers erupted, crisscrossing the stage. They flickered, twisted, and pulsed in electrifying patterns, stretching out like glowing threads in a loom, while the women on stage danced through the darkness.

Hey!
Sing with me, hey!
Hey!
Sing with me, hey!

Bright red and white flowers bloomed beneath Katyrina’s feet, unfurling in rick colors. The petals were all adorned with similar patterns as the embroidery as before, and they swayed beneath her feet as Katyrina sang. The camera locked onto her and Katyrina began to move toward the camera while it backed away from her. Her gaze never left the lens as she lifted her hand and curled her fingers in a slow, deliberate motion. The camera continued to follow her while she moved about the stage, singing.

Zemlya vse yešo zamerzla
The ground is still frozen

No naš dukh tyopliy
But our spirit is warm

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Sevodnya večerom
Tonight

Miy sobralis' vmeste.
We come together

I miy zasevayem naši polya
And we sow our fields

Deti boga
Children of God

As the second prechorus swelled, the women once again closed in around Katyrina. Standing shoulder to shoulder, they lifted their heads in unison, their voices rising like a tide to meet hers. Their harmonies matched beautifully, perfectly capturing the feeling of unity that is so prevalent in rural Polkopian culture. Together, they sang, not as individuals, but as one.

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Spi so mnoi
Sing with me

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Spi so mnoi
Sing with me

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Spi so mnoi
Sing with me

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Deti boga
Children of God

Spi so mnoi
Sing with me

The moment the second chorus struck, the same effect took place on stage as before. A deep, pounding EDM beat roared to life, and the embroidered patterns beneath the performers fractured, their once-delicate designs bursting into streaks of brilliant red and white light that shot skyward. Once again, began running in place, their feet pounding against the ground in-sync with one another, resulting in an enthusiastic roar from the audience.

Hey!
Sing with me, hey!
Hey!
Sing with me, hey!

Hey hey!
Come on, get up!
Hey hey!
Come on, come on, get up, hey!

Stas Lisa is one of the more well-known Polkopian artists. Known for his contemporary dance tracks, along with a powerful vocal range, his music appeals to a wide range of audiences domestically and abroad. Stas made his debut in the Landa vy Polkopiya, where his song, Vyanniy Svet, was one of ten competing songs to represent Polkopia in the 84th Worldvision Song Contest. Since then, he has submitted songs over the years and has become a household name among many hardcore Worldvision fans. Stas was selected to perform a translated version of his song, Odin Noč (One Night) for the second Opening Act of WV119. Although not a direct translation from the original lyrics, the language was adapted to spark anticipation, joy, and enthusiasm for the upcoming contest.

For the beginning of this performance, the arena was completely dark, save for a single spotlight on Stas Lisa's face. His features were half-shadowed, his eyes intense as they stared ahead. The camera, positioned at the front of the platform, filmed him as he stared ahead and sang the first line of the song's chorus. Once the beat started, the lights flickered on revealing the ghostly figures of a dozen background dancers frozen in place, each striking a different pose. The lights then turned off. On and on, matching the beat of the song, the lights would flicker on and off, while the background dancers each stuck a different pose each time. Meanwhile Stas remained at the center of the stage, though his stance immediately changed. He pivoted, turning to face the camera. His gaze locked onto the lens and he raised a hand and pointed directly at it, walking toward the camera as the camera moved backwards.

And if I never wanna leave this place
Even if I try, I can't escape
Tonight is ours, don’t need a name
Just a fever burning through my veins

The bass thumped harder, and in an instant, neon lasers sliced through the darkness. Vivid streaks of neon green crisscrossed the entirety of the stage, creating an intricate web of light that framed the background dancers in faint glow. The shadowed figures of the dancers were now revealed as silhouettes against the stark green background. The dancers sharply split off into pairs with and fell into an intricate routine. The dancers' hands cut through the air in rapid, calculated motions before transitioning in deliberate twirls. Every movement was perfectly in-sync by the pulse of the music. At the center of it all, Stas Lisa remained at the center of the stage. His stance was poised, yet seemed completely natural, as he lifted one hand to mirror the dancers’ gestures.

And if I never wanna leave this place
Even if I try, I can't escape
Tonight is ours, don’t need a name
Just a fever burning through my veins

As the first verse began, the beat softened, giving way to a smoother rhythm. The neon lasers dimmed and melted into softer beams that pulsed in shades of violet and deep blue. The dancers, meanwhile, slowed their movements and transitioned into fluid waves, swaying their bodies sync with the new tempo. At the center, Stas Lisa’s presence remained unchanged. With deliberate, measured steps, he moved backward, his free hand gliding through the air. His dancers all came to the center of the stage to meet him, embracing him together on stage by the time he finished singing the last line.

I feel it closer, the music's beating
Lost in the music, I'm overheating
Always so reckless, fire is leading
Takes me under... (no sense of meaning)

As Stas sang the pre-chorus, the dancers' hands traced along his arms and shoulders, as if they were a part of him. The embrace was fluid yet intentional, like they were drawn to the intoxication that matched the lyrics of the song. Stas, caught in the midst of them, tilted his head back slightly, closing his eyes for a fleeting moment, letting the connection wash over him as he continued to sing the prechorus. The camera framed the intimate moment with Stas in the center and the dancers encircling him like a heartbeat.

I keep on spinning, craving more and more, more and more
When you're near me, I can't get enough, yeah
I keep on spinning, come and give me more, give me more
When you're with me, I lose my…

The embrace loosened and the dancers rapidly pulled away from Stas Lisa. Their movements were seamless, almost weightless, their bodies swaying to the lo-fi groove. Stas stood at the center, his presence grounded yet effortlessly in sync with the shifting energy around him. The dancers began performing a choreographed number with quick footwork, sudden turns, arms cutting through the air with precision before melting into fluid motions. Stas, meanwhile, matched their intensity. He spun effortlessly between them, rolling his shoulders to the beat, his free hand accentuating the rhythm with every flick of his wrist.

And if I never wanna leave this place
Even if I try, I can't escape
Tonight is ours, don’t need a name
Just a fever burning through my veins

And if I never wanna leave this place
Even if I try, I can't escape
Tonight is ours, don’t need a name
Just a fever burning through my veins.. oohh...

As the song's breakdown began, the dancers continued their dance, but Stas lurched forward. A few of the dancers' heads expressed concern, but they continued the routine while Stas pushed forward with a newfound urgency. Stas still sang but held his fist in the air.

Give me more and more, give me more and more
Give me more and more, give me more and more
Give me more and more, give me more and more
Give me more and more...

Then, in one swift motion, he reached beneath his shirt and yanked out a folded piece of fabric. The material unfurled in an instant, and the unmistakable colors of the LGBTQ+ flag came into view. For a split second, the cameras stayed on him, capturing the entire moment on live television, but soon cut away. The feed jumped to wide shots of the stage, to abstract angles of the dancers who continued their routine, unaware or unable to react. But for everybody watching the contest live, the truth couldn't be hidden. Amid the music, a new sound emerged - muffled voices and the harsh rustling of movement. Stas’s voice rang out, sharp and urgent, though his words were difficult to make out. The scuffle escalated in the background, footsteps pounding against the stage, before the camera cut to black and the music ended. After a minute, the cameras returned, showing the stage in muted gold tones as if nothing had happened.

Following a brief, awkward pause, the camera cut to the two hosts now stepping onto the stage. This year’s Worldvision Song Contest is hosted by none other than Pavel Demidov and Nikola Mur'kovskaya, the beloved faces of Symfonik and widely recognized television personalities throughout Polkopia.

The pair strolled onto the stage, hiding the awkward moment through a casual and welcome demeanor. They casually held their cue cards while the booing from the audience subsided. Eventually both of them extended their arms out to either side.

Pavel and Nikola: "Welcome to Peeto!"

The crowd responded with a mixture of boos and cheering. It took a few moments for the noise to die down, but Pavel and Nikola eventually managed to calm the crowd down before continuing.

Pavel: "We are very excited to have everybody back in Polkopia. Do you know that it's been thirty two editions since we've held the contest here?"

Nikola: "I can't believe it's been that long, but we're happy to be back and ready to kick off the show! We have an exciting show for you, with XXX wonderful countries set to perform today."

Pavel: "By the end of the night, one of these amazing performers will win this competition, and it's all up to you — the audience at home... or in the arena tonight — who will decide the winner of tonight's show. Are we ready to start the night?"

This time, the hosts were met with an enthusiastic roar of applause, with many audience members enthusiastically waving their nation's flag.

Pavel and Nikola: "Let the Worldvision Song Contest begin!"

StrayaRoos
Nat - c'est la vie

Sycco - Meant to Be
Music & Lyrics: Nat Jelita

Background

If WV117's 9th place was a 'pinch yourself' moment for StrayaRoos in the contest, Ellie Pretala finishing 4th in Valletta was a 'faint and concuss yourself' moment. Not even the most optimistic worker at rtvS could've guessed that StrayaRoos would achieve a top 5 finish last edition. and now, here we are. To get a new best result, any Roosian entry will now have to be fighting for first in any scenario that's not a landslide victory (or a narrow one between the top 2 where everyone else is left in the dust). So, to attempt to land the nation it's third straight top 10, rtvS has internally selected singer-songwriter Nat with their song c'est la vie

Artist

Representing StrayaRoos is 23-year-old singer-songwriter Nat Jelita, who performs under the mononym Nat. Born and raised in Pale, They're the first Genderqueer artist to compete for StrayaRoos at WorldVision. Compared to previous Roosian contestants, they aren't exactly well-known, having been a bit of a wildcard pick by rtvS, having not really released a notable single, apart from a few songs with more than 250,000 streams from three years ago.

To describe Nat's musical style is extremely difficult. Their songs range from EDM to Metal Pop, and then everything in between. They're a common collaborator with Zak, who represented StrayaRoos in WV114 with Ngalawa dwi (Stay Here), and that's shown in their inclusion of Dharawal lyrics in most of their songs. However, c'est la vie, their entry for WV119, was entirely a solo project. It was so much of a solo project, their label didn't know about it until legitimately 72 hours before the announcement that Nat would be participating, and only 5 days before release.

Song

c'est la vie was released on January 31, 2025 as the Roosian entry for WV119. The song, an upbeat EDM track, to put it in as few words as possible, was Nat's way of telling their somewhat unaccepting family that they were queer and proud. as well as communicating to their parents specifically to not rue over the fact that the perfect 'daughter' they wanted was gone because it was 'just how life goes sometimes'. The title expresses that message short and sweet and in French.

Before the Show

Rehersals

Performance

As the lights go down and the stage ready plays, Nat takes a deep breath in. This is their moment. The costume they had selected was a simple black long-sleeved top, and matching black jeans, with what looks like a rainbow belt around their waist (but it's actually their smuggled Roosian Pride flag. somehow disguising it as a belt worked.).

When the lines blurred your presence turned into a red haze
It’s pointless to claim I’m going into something I can’t change

When the light goes, I’m on my own
Flippin' my life on its head
And I know it’s not like before
Now I’m stuck on my own
That’s just how it goes

Oh, C’est la vie
Leave me in my reality
I just wanna stay
I just wanna stay, I just wanna be here
Oh, C’est la vie
There’s no opacity
Leave me in my daydream
Leaving me
I just wanna stay here
I just wanna stay here

Just why?
Why should I keep living this lie as my life?
Why should I?
I think you’d see why if you had to try
Not gonna wait for you to realise it
Time to rise up, and finally break free.

When the light goes, I’m on my own
Flippin' my life on its head
And I know it’s not like before
Now I’m stuck on my own
That’s just how it goes

Oh, C’est la vie
Leave me in my reality
I just wanna stay
I just wanna stay, I just wanna be here
Oh, C’est la vie
There’s no opacity
Leave me in the daydream
Leaving me
I just wanna stay here
I just wanna stay here
I just wanna stay here

Cäsper Görmiden ë The Country Band- "Kärhify"

Image

I guess "unexpected" is going to be a trend from Darkmania as this time, they go all for country music. It's seen as popular in rural Darkmania but I think you never expected to see it here. But alas, here we are with a surprise.

Cäsper Görmiden knows country. He was born with a dad who sang country music and a mum who wrote country (and pop) songs. His songs have done decent in charts, despite only having two top-10 songs, and one of them was him being a featured artist in a semi-comical song about having to push your broken car off the road. He is not the main singer of any band, but join forces with

The band is called "Sphinx", but due to some trademark disputes will be referred to as "The Country Band". Please don't ask why.

Cäsper and The Country Band will perform a love-letter to Cäsper's home province, despite having not lived there in 15 years.

Tune:Myles Smith - Nice To Meet You

Verse 1

Falling through the noise but I see you oh oh
Lost inside a world without a view, oh

Pre-Chorus

Ohh, I could feel my heart waking up
Ohh, inside of me
And, ohh, then you pulled me close enough
Like you knew you set me free

Chorus

Yeah, you’re the meaning in my life
You’re the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life

Yeah girl, you’re my inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin’

No one needs you more than I need you now
So take my hand, don’t let go now
Let's feel the rhythm and lets us hear the sound

Our song,
One song here together
We could dance till the morning light
Move with me till the dawn is bright
Let’s forget about our worries and the wild world outside

Verse 2
Shadows in my mind began to fade away, oh
Every single step we took, I felt the weight, oh

Pre-Chorus
And, ohh, I could feel the night slipping by
Ohh, away from me
And, ohh, when I saw the fire in your eyes
I knew you were meant for me

Chorus
Yeah, you’re the meaning in my life
You’re the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life

Yeah girl, you’re my inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin’

No one needs you more than I need you now
So take my hand, don’t let go now
Let's feel the rhythm and let us hear the sound

Our song,
One song here together
We could dance till the morning light
Move with me till the dawn is bright
Let’s forget about our worries and the world outside

Post-Chorus
Move with me till the dawn is bright
Move with me till the dawn is bright

Outro
You’re the meaning in my life
You’re the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
One song, here together
Then let’s play it on repeat
Let the stars be our guide tonight
Move with, move with me till the dawn is bright

Axuva Today Network [ATN] Today we announce that the Axuvian Government now recognizes The Russian Language as an Official Language, Korean and English were spoken in the beginning, but there were Russians too, russians were forgotten and their language were not recognized due to the things they did in the past, but now their language is a official language of Axuva, and there will now be 3 official languages instead of two.

Dave McDaverson and Television Director – Placely Dancehall Song

Tune: Steven Seagal ft. Lady Saw – Strut

Yes, this is a real song. This isn't AI or anything, Steven Seagal really made this song. There is absolutely no beginning to his talents.
Obligatory wacky and "so random" puppet that you all know and are probably sick and tired of, brought to you by Elejamie.

Malta Comino Gozo's fourth WorldVision hosting had gone down a storm! The voting had been tantalisingly close for the hosts. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as the voting unfolded, and the competition was razor-close for the hosts, who had held the lead almost the entire time! All signs were pointing for an eleventh win as well as a second home turf win for MCG!

But Rugenia was back.

Having returned to the contest in WorldVision 117, they were back on form, placing a respectable seventh. They then went on to debut and win the 76th World Hit Festival! Now, the stage was set for an epic showdown, with both contenders on the brink of winning! Even the hosts in Valletta could not contain their excitement as it was down to the wire! With Malta Comino Gozo collecting 121 points from the public, it seemed as if that was it, but Rugenia, with a score of 160 already from the juries, told a different story. With 119 points from the public, it was just enough to pass the host earning Ira feat. Tanja and their song Human victory by only 7 points and their first victory in 100 editions! A phenomenal achievement to say the least. And hey, at least the locals could claim a partial victory as Ira was half MCGoan and she was proud of it! Speaking in Maltese as she accepted her trophy, she only cemented herself in the hearts of the country. In what was tradition, all MCG winners had a street named after them, would this be the case for Ira, let's see!

Onto the next contest!

With the aftermath of WorldVision 118 excitement still buzzing in and around Valletta weeks after the contest, MCGBC, facing financial strain, had a tough decision to make. The contest had been their costliest to date at 22 million Florins. Organising security, logistics, and a world-class production venue has stretched MCGBC’s budget to its limits, prompting questions over whether further allocations for future contests could be justified.

On the other hand, nearly 500,000 viewers just in MCG alone had tuned in for the grand finale, almost 94% of the population, reflecting broad public enthusiasm and highlighting the cultural significance that WorldVision did for Malta Comino Gozo.

Despite this substantial outlay, estimates suggest a potential long-term return of around 20 million Florins over the next five years, owing to increased tourism, business partnerships, and global exposure for local arts and culture. By welcoming WorldVision to their stores, Malta Comino Gozo gained valuable international attention, boosting the national profile and offering fresh opportunities for local industries. MCGBC viewed these successes as essential to its mission to inform, educate, and entertain. With that, participation was confirmed!

Malta Comino Gozo’s latest WorldVision choice might come as a surprise to many. KARSA, real name Alice Camilleri, hailing from Is-Swittar in central MCG, is better known for her roles on popular MCG dramas like Tfal ta’ L-Iljuni and her extensive performing arts background rather than any singing career. Yet here she is, stepping onto the international stage at 35 with a debut track that bursts with fierce energy and a driving rock backbone! Everyone knows Mata Comino Gozo likes a good rock song at WorldVision

Titled “Chains”, the song, an edgy alt rock piece with rebellious lyrics channels an empowering message—full of high-voltage. One standout line, “Even in these chains, you can’t stop me,” sets the tone for KARSA’s bold theatrical performance, while the haunting bridge, “Take these chains from my heart and set me free,” captures her personal and raw vulnerability. From the very first note, the track cements KARSA’s intention to break boundaries and challenge expectations. Whether she’s singing about personal battles or collective struggles, the gritty undertones and anthemic chorus promise a powerful moment on the WorldVision stage. In a recent interview, KARSA told MCG1 what pushed her to step into the WorldVision spotlight.

"I approached MCGBC, and at first, they were baffled but you know what MCGBC are like, they like to take risks. I already have a theatre and performing arts background, which translates well on stage, and it has always been my way of transforming pain into power and becoming someone else. Sure, I've been acting and performing on stage and TV for years, but singing was always this wild and unknown territory for me, something I'd shied away from for ages. It's like, 'Oh, there's Alice. I wonder what she'll be starring in next' Well, I bet you never saw this coming!

I had this urge to use my voice to sing, something I've wanted to do for years—not just to entertain people, but to break free from all these boxes people try to confine me in. My first time in the studio, when I first heard the line, 'Even in these chains, you can't stop me,' it hit me so hard. It wasn't just a good and strong line; nope, it was sorta like a declaration of independence, a promise to myself that I refuse to be held down.

At WorldVision I want to send a message to all those to 'run, run and escape' the limits that society, bad relationships, or even our minds try to set. And honestly, no matter what, if my performance and song can make even one person feel like they can finally say, 'Take these chains from my heart and set me free,' then I've really done something meaningful!

Next stop, Peeto!

Mavase and the dancers left the stage, the arena radiating warmth and happiness. He knew this was just the beginning, his story had just started, and this was his first show. A bittersweet sensation hit Mavase as he walked off the stage. He'd worked so long and hard for this moment, and he was ready for what was next, but was wondering if it would get any better than this. He shook off the feeling, knowing he had lots more to come. Mavase was excited, but still wanted a good result for his hard work. Either way, soon they would find out. Mavase and the dancers headed back to the green room, high fiving Sylvia Geraldine who would be the last performer of the night as they passed wishing her good luck. They returned and hugged the team, they sat, and waited nervously for the results.

The jury votes flooded in. Saint Monkey in 14th, with 46 points. Then the televote:

DOUGLAS STINNETT: "Proceeding forwards, let's make our way to the contestants from Saint Monkey!"

"Saint Monkey, the heavens have awarded you..."

________________________________________

"Fifty Points!"

Mavase smiled and waved at the camera. A small bit of disappointment hit Mavase. But then one of the team members said “Mavase, remember, this is just the beginning, right?” Mavase smiled and the team poured themselves each a glass of Coca-Cola -the Champagne would have to wait till the afterparty – contest rules!

“Mataka!” (Cheers) Mavase says as the team clink their glasses together.

Just the beginning.

Saint Monkey did originally confirm their participation in the 118th WorldVision Song Contest, however the announcement that a Cyclone would be hitting Saint Monkey the wise decision was taken to withdraw from the contest, which was eventually won by Rugenia in Malta Comino Gozo, with the song Human, by Ira featuring Tanja. In fact, during the cyclone itself the strongest gust of wind recorded was 319km/h, making it the most powerful recorded cyclone in Saint Monkey. It decimated communities, destroying major infrastructure, and killing 340 people. The cost has been estimated at 65 billion Holy Monkeys ($95.5bn) and it will take years for everything to be rebuilt. However, the resilience of the public kept hopes up, as well as Christmas and New Year celebrations in the midst of the disaster. And then the budget-stricken SMBS with a lot of the government money moved to prioritise rebuilding efforts announced that they still would be participating in the 119th WorldVision Song Contest.

Enter: Benata, full name Ben Onata (born. 6th January 1993), originally was going to compete in the Music for Saint Monkey for WV118, however was moved to 119, and won it with 24% of the vote with the charismatic indie/pop-rock track Thirteen.

(In Ben’s POV:)

I first met Grandma when I was 3. I don’t remember that trip. Then 6, when we went to watch the Saint Monkey League Cup Final, Calona F.C vs Mt. Orangu F.C. Although it was over 25 years ago, I still remember the tears I cried when the Mt Orangu lost, 3-2 against Calona F.C. We missed a penalty in the 93rd minute and I still remember how my heart sank when it hit the post and rolled out of play. But the words from my grandma was what made me remember her so vividly. That was the last time I met her until 2006, when I was 13.

The summer of my life.

I know it seems strange. I was already in 2nd School, was exposed to the various topics discussed between teenagers. However, I always managed to stay innocent. I was very much a child when it came to this trip.

My parents wanted a romantic holiday together, you know what I mean, and told me I was going to go to my grandma’s. I complained. I wanted to stay with my friends here, however the complaints meant nothing as they’d already booked it and I was going to have to go. Thank god I did.

Summer of ‘06, I got onto the Sacrachimp – Saint Monkey City overnight train with all my bags and everything still feeling annoyed. “Why did I have to go on this trip,” I thought, “it’s going to be boring”. How wrong I was! Getting off at the Andechimp Interchange Station at 6am, I looked up at the large mountains I was about to traverse into. It was beautiful, I had to agree, and so was the train trip to Orangamonk. Spectacular. It was about 5 hours, trains back then were slower than nowadays, but that made it even better, weaving in and out of the cliffs and meadows and tunnels. It was really, really beautiful. After a long train trip, I was now over 3000m above sea level at the Orangamonk Central Station. Still, I had another 4-hour train, a night alone at a hotel then a long 8 hour walk to the hut. (Also, I forgot to say, children of like 11 could travel basically anywhere in Saint Monkey without parents, nowadays it is more restricted, but still 14-year-olds can travel where they like.)

Enough about the transport, I met my grandma at the village before walking up, as it was a pretty dangerous walk, and then when I got to the Seruk Wanoma Ondolapa (Top of the World Hut) (5265m above sea level) I gave myself time to climatise to the environment, but luckily since I had my grandma’s genes, I quickly got used to it. If I had to put into one word, this trip was amazing. I played with my grandma and Julia, Harry, Robert and Bea, the children who stayed at the hut for the summer. We had fires, marshmallows and s’mores, stargazing, oh the sky was so clear, I could see the whole galaxy so clearly and I remember the stars shimmering off my grandma’s lovely blue eyes. We swam in the lake, my grandma even dived off the small cliff that was above it, she was always such a badass. We played games in the lake and in the lovely green plateau in the valley beneath the hut like beach volleyball and football until it turned dark. Before I never wanted to go, but then I never wanted to leave. Grandpa came halfway through my trip too; he was visiting some old friends in Orangamonk and Centalan, I really loved him too, although he was less keen with playing than my grandma. I loved spending every moment with my grandma, every game, every night, every meal, and the meals were so good! She made the absolute best vanilla cake ever. Never tried a better one. My grandma helped me find me, we had talks into the night about the future, about the past stories she had. And for the whole time I was just so happy. Even though I had problems of my own before, I completely forgot about them and remembered just how wonderful it is to be alive.

Though like everything, it has to end. And when it was over, when I was walking back to the village with my grandma, I held her hand for most the way down. Then I waved goodbye. On the train back to Orangamonk, weaving through the breathtaking mountains then back on the train from the Andechimp Interchange Station, reading the new chapter of the Football! sanga I had been reading, I could not stop smiling and thinking how great the trip was. And then when the skyline of Sacrachimp came into view I started crying. It was bittersweet. What a trip, what a summer.

After that trip, I really became a teenager. Had my first kiss, got a girlfriend that winter, a bad influence on me. Between the ages of 14 and 16 I drunk too much, failed some of my exams, had voices in my head telling me to do bad things. Just kind of lost what that trip meant. Until 2009, when my grandpa died. We went to his funeral; that’s the next time I saw my grandma. She delivered a speech but did not talk to me, nor my parents.

I had a song I’d been working on for a while that was on hold. I finished it, posted it on the new video thing that everyone was talking about: YouTube. The song was called “Grandpa” and it was my first single. It was pretty popular all things considered and I got picked up by a label, my career had begun. I tried fixing myself, improving habits, stopped drinking, broke up with my girlfriend that had got me into all the crap. The death of my grandad was sad, but really helped me rediscover what I’d learned on the trip in 2006.

Then my grandma fell in the mountains, breaking her back, confining her to a wheelchair. My parents moved her to a retirement home and she had to sell the hut. I visited on occasion, but was very busy trying to build my career. My parents moved to Moaiyana on Monkeyterianist Island, so it was just me and Grandma in Sacrachimp, I made sure to talk to her as much as possible, keep her company, talk about my life.

I kept at music enough to sustain my life, got in contact with Julia, Harry, Robert and Bea, had a trip or two with them each year. It was a good life, I tried my best. But things never stay the same.

In November 2024, I entered into WorldVision. I was accepted into the national final, but due to the announcement that Cyclone Emilio would hit Saint Monkey on the 5th – 7th December it was pushed back to next edition. So, I was evacuated, thinking that my grandma had as well, but then I got a text from her:

Why is it flooding in here?

No. nononononononono. She was still in Sacrachimp? I got into my car, sped the 200km journey there. I was stopped by a police officer, then told her about the story and she allowed me to go with her. When we got there it was awful. The wind was the strongest I’ve ever felt it, the water up to my ankles, with a road running down towards the ocean completely submerged along with the houses beside it. The retirement home was damaged. Fresh corpses of elderly people lying in the water. There must have been a storm surge here. The message. There must have not been any internet and only when it connected it got sent. It could’ve been a day ago, when the Cyclone hit. Then a faint voice: “help me, please.” Me and the officer ran upstairs and helped the people upstairs, calling the emergency services, helping them evacuate. After helping the others, I rushed back looking for my grandma, begging for her to be here, until I looked down to the left and I saw her body. Dead.

A week after the incident they found the people involved. Facing up to 10 years. It didn’t matter to me. My grandma is dead. How could this happen? I cried. A lot. I wanted to say goodbye to her my way, so I asked SMBS if I could alter my song lyrics, as I needed it to be for my grandma. They permitted it, and I changed the lyrics to remember my trip, all those years ago when I was thirteen. I know the song doesn’t sound like one to remember someone, but I know my grandma. She was badass, and the best way to say goodbye is in a cool, charismatic way, which is what I hope to achieve with this song. Before going to Saint Monkey City for the national final, I went to the Seruk Wanoma Ondolapa where they buried Grandma, in the traditional Monkeyterianist way. On her grave-statue as they call it, it read: Julie Onata (born. 12th February 1942, died 6th December 2024. Most badass grandma ever!)

I didn’t really expect anything going to the Music for Saint Monkey. I didn’t really feel much, still mourning my grandma. But when I won, I knew one thing.

I’ll do it for you grandma.

The air was fresh
My heart was free
Looking up
At my old world¹
Granny knew me so well
How could she even tell
She knew how I lived my life
The innocence before the strife²
She was there through that time
I hope I made up at the end³
Granny, me and you

I want to go back
To those days
Fresh as a mountain
Free like a bird
I miss that life, Gran
I won’t forget
And as I look back

We were
running in the
valley⁴
My smile wild
And my heart so free
When I was thirteen
When I was thirteen

Running in the
valley
My smile wild
And my heart so free
When I was thirteen
When I was thirteen

Life was slow
Life was mine
And each day I owned
I was there
Until the summer went to go
When the world was fun
I didn’t worry none,
at all
“But you can’t win all the time⁵”
Your words are true like the finest wine
I know you could’ve been the wisest dame
The future looks so bleak
The past is all I seek

But I’m now in the present
As real as pain
Stuck like the water
In a clogged drain
So, I will look forward
Pushing me on,
The times of the past:

Where we're
running in the
valley
My smile wild
And my heart so free
When I was thirteen
When I was thirteen

Running in the
valley
My smile wild
And my heart so free
When I was thirteen
When I was thirteen

Running in the
valley
My smile wild
And my heart so free
When I was thirteen
When I was thirteen

¹References the name of the mountain hut the Seruk Wanoma Ondolapa (English: Top of the World Hut) [5265m above sea level, making it one of the highest huts in Saint Monkey] Ben was staying at when he was 13, at his grandmas, and also pointing towards how his old life was as a thirteen year old.
²Shows how innocent Ben was, then following this summer trip he began his teenage years, and he got into drinking and relationships, gaining more distance between his grandma, with his mind having very conflicting feelings towards these things.
³Ben tried fixing the relationship in his late 20s, but never got the answer that he fixed it before his Grandma died.
⁴Since the hut was located upon a ridge, this is most likely referencing the Ondorangu Valley, known for its’ one tree and a large flat plateau of grass, where Ben, his grandma and the children staying at the hut at the time were playing.
⁵When Ben was 6 he cried over his and his Gran’s favourite team Mt. Orangu F.C losing the SMLC (Saint Monkey League Cup) in the football, with his Gran saying this to him after the final whistle blew. Ever since it has sticked with Ben and has become his favourite quote.
