The Song Translation Thread

Postby Nightralia » Sat Dec 14, 2024 9:42 am

Sometimes, a song's lyrics are just so spectacular (or horrible) that it's a travesty to limit it to one language. Your best friend, then is translation. However, most translations you'll find online are barebones, not reflecting the true poetry and spirit of the song.
Here, I'll be writing translations of songs that aim to strike as close to the original meaning as possible.

You're allowed to post in this thread; if you want to post, please try and follow the general guideline: Song name, theme/info about it, link to it if possible, original lyrics, then translated lyrics.
I'll start off.

I'll be mostly writing in Hindi, since that's the language I'm most proficient in apart from English. I may also write in Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Spanish, though their quality might be worse since I'm not that fluent in those languages; I might use machine assistance for some of them.
Y'all of course, are encouraged to post in whatever language you wish, please however try and keep direct AI use to a minimum.

Thanks!

Sadda Haq

The movie Rockstar was a very unique and ground-breaking Hindi film, released in 2013. It features the story of an aspiring rockstar, Janardhan, better known by his stage name Jordan.
(Don't read this part if you don't want spoilers)
Jordan is advised that the best way to infuse true emotion into one's music is through heartbreak, so he actively seeks it out: asking out the most popular girl in college, Heer, and slowly building up a friendship with her, despite her being set to marry in a few months.
As the movie progresses, his skill grows leaps and bounds, becoming ever more popular by the day.

However, this comes at a cost: he slowly gets cut off from people, being thrown out of his house for allegedly stealing, building a music career, then travelling to Prague and pursuing an illicit romance with the married Heer; which ends horribly for both. As he achieves stardom, he's got everything he could have hoped for, but he's miserable; at the end of the movie, he's a shell of a person, not seeing the people around him, his eyes see nothing but Heer.

The movie is a warning of how stardom can take a huge toll on your mind and your psyche, I think this article breaks it down really well.

Sadda Haq is one of the most popular songs from this movie, it was and is an anthem for disillusioned youth across South Asia, and has become synonymous with rebellion and freedom. It's a classic rock song, with elements of punk and nihilism thrown in.
Without further ado,

Sadda Haq

In this world
you people made;
at every step
the person's wrong.
Whatever I say, thinking it true
You say that I'm wrong...
I am wrong, then who's right?
then who's right;

Even for living on my terms, I,
need to file a request with you all;
Meaning that you all have
more right over me than I do...
My right, give it here!
My right, give it here!
(...)
My right, give it here!
Among these traitors, these wretched deceits,
Why are you choking out the way that I live?
Without your permission, I'm from those streets
Where there's no modesty nor shame

Living as my heart says is a steep price, the world's an enemy,
They're all strangers, burn them all
my heart says, my heart says
To live as my heart dies, to die thus,
(guitar solo)
My right, give it here!
My right, give it here!
(...)
My right give it here!
(this part isn't part of the lyrics, but it's in the movie version and music video. it's a metaphor for his mental state)
Hey! Many years ago, there used to be a forest here. A dense, frightening jungle. Then a city was built here. Neat and clean houses. Straight roads. Everything began to happen properly.
But the day the forest was cut down, a flock of pigeons flew away. They never returned. And I haven't seen them since. Has anyone seen them???
Crowd: No!
Jordan: Have you???
Crowd: No!!

(lyrics resume)

Oh eco-friendly, protectors of nature
I too am nature!
Through traditions, through society, why...
Why do you cut me, why do you divide me, in this way?
Why do you lecture on the truth, when you can't hear it yourself
When someone says the truth, you make laws and rules
Your fear, your love, your 'wow',
Keep it to you! (Keep it, idiot)

My right, give it here!
My right, give it here!
... (till the end)
My right, give it here!

The Local Train

Image

Many of the songs I'll be translating hereon will be by the relatively obscure band The Local Train, because I find their lyrics among the most worthy to translate into English. so here's a summary:

The Local Train is a Delhi-based rock/alt-rock band, probably one of the only to gain near-mainstream status in India. They're a really unique blend of electric guitar and classy drum elements with a healthy dose of Indianness, and Hindi-Urdu lyrics that are many times introspective and meaningful, attacking not just societal norms and unfairness of life, but YOU, the listener, for your complacence and biases.

they have a limited discography, yet have gained a devoted following who had till now searched for the taste of rock in Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses and Green Day.
Sadly, the heart of the band, their vocalist left in 2021, and no one knows when he'll return; he has teamed up for singles but they haven't released a major album since 2018.
