How do you categorize your music?

Postby Fungi » Tue Dec 10, 2024 4:45 pm

As an avid music enthusiast of a variety of genres, I tend to have a lot of music all over the place. The organization changes greatly on the listening medium, and setting.

    Examples:
  1. My Spotify playlists are categorized by either 1) similar genre of music or 2) vibe/tone of music, but these often go hand-in-hand. A playlist titled Childhood only contains songs that I remember hearing as a kid.
  2. Alternatively, my electronic music is all ripped from Soundcloud or Bandcamp, with a Title (Remix Artist[s]) - Original Artist [Genre] (Year).format template.
  3. My CDs are thrown into a box somewhere alongside my vinyls.

How do you categorize yours? Any recommendations or observations you've learned while organizing yours?
Like many others before, you too will be recycled. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.

I don't. I just throw everything into one music storage playlist on youtube. Although I do have a separate playlist for comfort songs. Might reccommend some songs someday, but for now people can just look at what I post in the "What music are you listening to?" threads (still kinda sad that they were downgraded to F7).

I don't have a complex system I just add songs I used to hear on the radio as a child and new songs I like. It also gives the effect of "surprise" when I just let the songs play on random and I have all the songs on the playlist.
Everything is canon except how people die here.

3 classes, spiritual, secular, ambient

I listen to a lot of Latin chants and old hymns. I sometimes listen to regular music or many varieties, mostly alternative and hip hop. And lastly I listen to stuff that's just instrumentals, similar to say Snowfall by Oneheart or other kinds of music like it. That's basically how I'd summarize the kind of music I listen to

I had an organization system, but it quickly fell apart.
I think 60s music is the only file that remains in order.

I throw them all in one playlist:

It's called the playlist.

It's like, 12 different genres of music so it's sort of like a Russian Roulette.

Specifically my Spootipoop playlists are more "vibes" based or meant to be inspiration for ideas I have. As a consequence there's a lot of different genres in all of them. I tend to make playlists of imagined radio stations that would exist in my countries, usually imagining the "pop" music stations as that type of music most aligns with my tastes.

I've also made playlists off of imagined soundtracks for movies I dream up.
I throw my physical media basically in a pile.

I have a touch of obsessive compulsive behaviour, and I worked in libraries for 20 something years - so I don't, just to avoid going down a rabbit hole of how to order them.

Artist first, then album, then edition (if applicable). Unofficial recordings (generally live concerts) are in another place within the artist folder.

Don't get me started on metadata. It'll take me until the heat death of the universe to get everything properly tagged and dated.
