[DRAFT] The Children Yearn For the Mines

Postby General TN » Fri Dec 06, 2024 6:17 pm

(Second Issue I have started, I'm going to work with this one because I find more confidence/options to go around with this)
Draft 7:
Requirements:

Child labor
Existing Mining Industry

Senario:
A recent tragedy struck in @@NATIONNAME@@ when a mine collapsed, killing several individuals who were inside. It was soon revealed that majority of them had been children, who were considered more effective due to their size for mining in tight areas.

Option 1:
An elderly woman known as Mrs. Plush who is dressed in wool sweater decorated with plush bears approaches your desk. In one hand she holds two colorful teddy bears and in the other a nervous child whose hand is locked in hers. "Dear @@LEADER@@ these poor children really shouldn't be working dangerous jobs in the mines. These poor little souls simply can't handle such a risk . I have a preposition to allow the nations children to continue to work but prevent any risk of death. Simply mandate that they can only work in safe jobs such as sewing or making teddy bears. It's a perfect job for little hands and minds of the nations youth. Just look at what my precious Lilly made!" She show's you the teddy bears as Lily tries to back away before being dragged back by Mrs. Plush as she continues to smile at you.

Result:
Sewing needles and buttons are the new pickaxes and coal

Option 2:
A woman steps in front of Mrs. Plush clutching a picture of a young girl as she collapses on your desk as her chest shakes as if she was sobbing. "Oh @@LEADER@@! What that softy is proposing is not highlighting to most important problem! My child was killed and I, the parent, was paid back nothing for the loss of my sweet money mak- I mean my sweet daughter. Parents don't send their children to make money only for them to die before they can make a true profit. You must ensure that the industry is held to stricter standards to precent a loss of our little profit machi" She coughs mid-sentence before she begins to pretend to sob again.

Result:
Mothers sing their children lullabies about glittering gems and golden @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@

Option 3.1:
(Capitalist Option)
Young renowned socialist Sasha Liss pushes the woman aside. "@@LEADER@@ do you not realize what child labor is? It's a tool used by the bourgeoisie to enslave us that is yet another barrier for @@NATIONNAME@@ to cross if we want to reach our socialist utopia. You must outlaw this practice and push us forward away from these backward practices to a bright future!"

Result 3.1:
Small pickaxes lay in the dark while @@NATIONNAME@@ walks in the light

Option 3.2:
(Socialist Option)
Spokesperson of the organization Children of the Proletariat Auntie Rich looks at you with horror on her face. "Oh @@LEADER@@ what a travesty! How could our socialist paradise allow children to be exploited in a barbaric capitalist practice! We need to support the proletariat, not subdue them! Banning this practice is a must to remove one of the last few capitalist stains on our nation!"

Result 3.2:
It is a common practice to paint pickaxes formally used by children red

Option 4:
A small tap is felt on your side as you turn to see a small dusty child holding a pickaxe nearly as large as he is as he speaks in a squeaky voice, "Mr @@LEADER@@ Sir those adults don't know what their talking about. We like this work! Why do the adults get to be in more jobs than us? Please Sir let us be in more jobs." he smiles before hobbling away.

Result:
Mining Blues and Bloody Shoes

Requirements:

Down with the rich!" she yells as guards grab her arms and start to escort her out.

Result 3.1:
Pickaxes and Children are a banned match

Option 3.2:
(Socialist Option)

Edited the draft to re-write Option 2 and its result.
And changed Result 2 to be a bit more different in wording from 1 again.

- As written, this needs the capitalism validity. I don't think the issue overall has to be limited in that manner though, so if you're willing to tweak the mining entity/character to not be a private company with a CEO, it could be more widely distributed.

- The final sentence of the description doesn't contribute, and can be dropped. Basically every issue involves various people with various opinions showing up – we can focus just on what happened.

- Option 1 is asking "how could they allow it" when in fact it is the nation, ie the player, that allowed it. In other words... I think this is more gripping as a "how could *we* allow this?" sort of argument. I'm also interested to know who this random person is. Look for another word other than "slamming" for their action – they already "slam" the door just a few words before.

- Check out the "How to Write an Issue" guide linked in my signature, or pinned near the top of this forum. It has correct macros, and important information like...

- Effect 1 (and others): Effect lines are not sentences – they do not take initial capitalization or terminal punctuation. They should be snappy and witty in some way – not dry or literal.

- Option 2: What barbaric practice? Make the request clear, and then give this person an argument that is more than just an appeal to emotion. Try to make it more distinct from Option 1, which already is locking down use of children in dangerous occupations.

- Option 3: What is this actually asking Leader to do? "Calm down the masses" how? We need specifics, and it needs to be an *active* solution, not just "keep things the way they are." That's an "ignore" option, and is what the Dismiss button is for.

- Option 4: Physical money requires a validity check against digital currency. Try to make sure the argument itself is stronger. Talk about *why* this will be good for the economy, or if it isn't really and is just about the bribes, try to make that clear as well. More dialogue, less dialogue tag.

To add on to what VH said, I really think you could stand the issue (especially the options and effects) more flavor. Most of these characters fit their ascribed caricature/archetype fairly well, but it really wouldn’t hurt to expand on them as people. Mess around a little, maybe come up with subtle puns for their names, or some sort of descriptions that emphasize the hypocrisy of their suggestions (for example, why does this guy just want to prevent kids for working dangerous jobs? What jobs would she rather they work? Wholesome child labor facilities? Who even is he?), issues should be fun to read through too.

Also, this isn’t very important but it does make me itch to read, the movement in this one is kind of busy. Your door slams open, and someone slams a newspaper on your desk, then they’re pushed aside by a grieving mother, and then someone comes up from behind (?) you and then another guy slides some money on your desk, is that next to the newspaper? Are there multiple desks? It’s not bad to just leave the whole how they got into your office thing to the imagination, but if you’re going to go into it you should try to make it consistent.

Re-worked the draft, essentially re-writing everything. I noted what VH said and also worked to incorporate Vara's comment on things like expanding on the characters and added more to make the motives of each clear, and to also add a layer about the fact that everyone has goals and what they ask for is not for the children but their own cause.
Comments are welcome as always. Thanks to you two for feedback!

Option 3.2,I'm sorry but how is any of this promoting "filthy capitalist laws?" If a socialist society has child labour, how the fuck is that the fault of capitalism? That just seems like unhinged anti-capitalism non-sense from someone who has no idea what in the fuck they're talking about. You can have that as an option, I guess, as long as you make it clear that that's the speaker's persoective

Noted. I decided to change it to "We should not be bending to such laws that allow greed and exploitation!" to make it feel more reasonable for a socialist idealized nation.

Updated option 4's wording a bit as I felt some vagueness could be removed and changed. I am really aiming to submit this early January, probably Jan 5 ish, and any comments would be appreciated greatly to allow this to be submitted at the best state it can be!

Get ready to be asphyxiated due to a carbon monoxide leak in your AirBnB by the sheer, unadulterated power of my feedback!

Generally, most of my feedback I can give you is overarching things you should fix about your issue rather than specific ones for every option. It's looking rather barebones at the moment. Firstly, you can afford to make your options longer if you feel they can benefit from more words. Feel free to add some extra flavor sentences. You've got the space. Also, none of your speakers seem to make an argument for their choice. Remember that that these people are trying to convince a world leader to implement a policy. I'm not saying you need to provide ironclad reasoning for every single option, but there should be some, even if it's silly stuff. Something worthy of note is that effect lines do not require capital letters or periods. There's also some spelling and grammatical errors sprinkled throughout this issue (empathizing instead of emphasizing, for example) so run it through a free grammar checker or just give it a thorough proofread. Now, onto your individual option feedback:

Option 1: About the wording here, your first sentence should probably be split into two rather than one long one for the sake of flow. Additionally, the word bearing is a bit confusing in this context because of both the expression "bearing child" and the later mention of bears. You can also flesh out Mrs. Plush in more subtle ways here. How does she walk into the room? How does she speak? Maybe add a more interesting ending dialogue tag rather than placing a simple teddy bear on your desk. I suggest something where she tries to wrangle a child back from running away, bringing an entourage of fake-happy children with her in the beginning dialogue tag. All of this will help paint a mental picture of the woman in the recipient's head.

Option 2: The grieving parent angle isn't working here. You already have a compassionate child labor option in the first place, you need to justify why this is different. You could position the parent as someone who only cares about the death of their child only for the loss of income. She could call Mrs. Plush a softie (puns!). You don't have to change the core option, just the framing. If you do this it'll be leagues better.

Option 3.1: Change the joke name to "Sasha Liss". Another victim of my crusade against forced joke names. This option seems to equate anti-capitalism with being anti-child labor, which, by the very necessity of a doppelganger, isn't true. To justify the communist angle on banning child labor, you could position child labor as a tool of the bourgeoisie and encourage its abolition because it would bring @@NAME@@ closer to the desired socialist utopia. Also, I'd get rid of this effect line, it's pretty weak and I think you can do better.

Option 3.2: To make this joke name a bit funnier, you could position her as the spokeswoman for a proletariat-friendly (perhaps even anti-child labor?) state-run baked goods enterprise. Like option 3.1 but opposite, you could position child labor as a dirty capitalist system that should be eradicated. Also, this effect line is not comprehensible nor funny.

Option 4: Why do you only reveal who is speaking only after their lines have been said? Also, what does "head" of the mining industry even mean? The mining industry isn't a hierarchical organization. Now, what if you positioned the speaker as a child laborer in the mining industry asking Leader to mind their own business and expand child labor even to government jobs? I am a sucker for Victorian orphans.

Tyranny by Majority

Hello! I like the premise for the issue here, but I feel there's some room still to spruce things up. I'm going to split sections up to make the feedback more legible here. Spelling & grammatical issues will be highlighted in blue.

General TN wrote:Senario:
A recent tragedy struck in @@NATIONNAME@@ when a mine collapsed, killing several individuals who were inside. It was soon revealed that majority of them had been children, who were considered more effective due to their size for mining in tight areas.

Starting with the scenario here, I think the wording might be a little clunky and lack a certain emotional punch. Industrial accidents are always tragic, not only are there lives lost, and individuals irreparably maimed, but families who lose their primary source of income. The phrasing here I feel doesn't necessarily convey that. I might suggest rephrasing it to something along the lines of:

A recent mine collapse, already tragic, was revealed to be downright heartbreaking when it was uncovered that the majority of the victims were children.

I think the bit about efficiency might be unnecessary here; it would feel more at home in an argument for the use of child labour than just the issue description. Efficiency isn't necessary even the primary driver behind child labour in general, it's usually just because they're cheaper to employ. Obviously, don't feel like you're obliged to use my rewrite (though you are welcome to), but if nothing else, try to tweak the phrasing a little to tug at people's heartstrings more.

Option 1:
An elderly woman known as Mrs. Plush who is dressed in wool sweater decorated with plush bears approaches your desk. In one hand she holds two colorful teddy bears and in the other a nervous child whose hand is locked in hers. "Dear @@LEADER@@, these poor children really shouldn't be working dangerous jobs in the mines. These poor little souls simply can't handle such a risk . I have a preposition proposition to allow the nations children to continue to work, but prevent any risk of death. Simply mandate that they can only work in safe jobs, such as sewing or making teddy bears. It's a perfect job for little hands and minds of the nations youth. Just look at what my precious Lilly made!" She show's shows you the teddy bears as Lily tries to back away, before being dragged back by Mrs. Plush as she continues to smile at you.

The phrasing for the first two sentences - both underlined - here feels a little bit clunky; it's conveying a mountain of information, and a good portion of it is redundant too. I would suggest combining these two sentences to convey the most pertinent information, which seems to be: 1. She likes to sew, and 2. She likes kids. Condensing it down to something like:

A sweater clad, old woman named Mrs. Plush approaches your desk, bearing with her a visibly nervous child and several, clearly homespun teddy bears.

An approach like this conveys just about all the same information, and adds a little humour too by implying that the teddy bears are quite shoddy. It's a little punchier and easier to read. Also, be careful how you describe her age; elderly specifically would contradict the geronticide policy, so either your issue would need that as a validity for the issue (despite the issue not being about geronticide at all), create a duplicate option where she's not as old just for that (adding bloat to the issue), or else find a different way to describe her. I used old here because it's a little more relative.

For the second bit underlined, I would also work to combine those two sentences.

It's a perfect job for little hands — just look at what my precious Lilly made!

The bit about the minds feels a little confusing, and when you splice the two sentences together it feels like a more complete thought.

I would suggest tweaking the last sentence of option 1 as well, though I leave that more to your discretion. Just try reading it aloud and you'll see that it feels a little clunky.

Option 2:
A woman steps in front of Mrs. Plush, clutching a picture of a young girl, as she collapses on your desk as and her chest shakes as if she was sobbing. "Oh @@LEADER@@! What that softy is proposing is not highlighting to the most important problem! My child was killed and I, the parent, was paid back nothing for the loss of my sweet money mak- I mean my sweet daughter. Parents don't send their children to make money only for them to die before they can make a true profit. You must ensure that the industry is held to stricter standards to precent prevent a the loss of our little profit machi" She coughs mid-sentence before she begins to pretend to sob again.

Option 3.1:
(Capitalist Option)
Young renowned socialist Sasha Liss pushes the woman aside. "@@LEADER@@, do you not realize what child labor is? It's a tool used by the bourgeoisie to enslave us that is yet another barrier for @@NATIONNAME@@ to cross if we want to reach our socialist utopia. You must outlaw this practice and push us forward, away from these backward practices to a bright future!"

Option 3.2:
(Socialist Option)
Spokesperson of the organization Children of the Proletariat Auntie Rich looks at you with horror on her face. "Oh @@LEADER@@ what a travesty! How could our socialist paradise allow children to be exploited in with a barbaric, capitalist practice! We need to support the proletariat, not subdue them! Banning this practice is a must to remove one of the last few capitalist stains on our nation!"

Option 4:
A small tap is felt on your side, as you turn to see a small, dusty child holding a pickaxe nearly as large as he is, as he speaks in a squeaky voice, "Mr @@LEADER@@ Sir, those adults don't know what their they're talking about. We like this work! Why do the adults get to be in more jobs than us? Please Sir, let us be in more jobs.," he smiles before hobbling away.

Mostly grammatical suggestions for these ones here for now.

Result:
Mining Blues and Bloody Shoes

This result feels incomplete — there isn't even really a verb to it. I would suggest reworking this effect, add some form of action to it.
