[D] Slurs

Postby The Overmind » Fri Dec 06, 2024 9:30 am

I've seen several times in the past where site staff have explicitly said slurs do not automatically constitute rule breaking, including multiple instances this week.

Under what circumstances does using a slur not inherently constitute flaming, trolling, or, at a minimum, flamebaiting of the target marginalized group?

Because I struggle to understand when they wouldn't, beyond discussions of their negative impact or disavowal of their use (i.e. clear instances of neither using nor endorsing a slur), constitute one or more instances of rule breaking under the current OSRS.

And if they can slip under the wire when they are deemed edge cases, why do we not update the OSRS to include a rule explicitly against instances of hate speech if the rules against flaming, trolling, and flamebaiting don't adequately collectively cover it?

Upon reading this I had the exact same question. I don't feel like use of slurs should be allowed whatsoever, tbh.

Perhaps discussing slurs like what continues a slur, what's its origin or intent, or efforts to reclaim it, and whether or not someone would tolerate it in any context would be non-rulebreaking contexts.

In that case I feel as though it's tolerable, but generally I still feel like they just should be unused, outright.

Slurs, as I have seen, can be used in a not rule-breaking way. Calling someone or group of people a slur is generally flaming/trolling, but if you, for example, civilly discuss them then it's not been rulebreaking.

Hard agree - only instance that I can think of that would not constitute flaming/trolling is reclaimed slurs, but it is very hard to prove someone is/isn't X group and therefore "allowed" to use it. Seems like a very easily exploitable system, and banning them altogether is the better idea.
