What is the best Metallica song? (NS opinions)

Postby Revived Unclear » Tue Dec 03, 2024 10:32 am

I have seen a thread on this forum related specifically to Eminem, but that post barely has any substance in the OP, so I change that substance and artist, and the question arises, What is the best Metallica song?

Metallica has so many great ones, so it's hard to settle on one, but I have to go with Motorbreath, this almost punk like song, is short (at 3:08), but so good, I love the instrumentation and the lyrics are pretty fire too.

So what is other NS user's opinion on this matter
When you reply, please reply with the name of the song, name of the album it's on, and reason why you like it.

That’s a tough one. Probably “Creeping Death” or maybe “For Whom the Bell Tolls”.

FUCK ISRAEL! I support peace, therefore I stand with Palestine. I want a bi-national solution, a state in which Jews and Palestinians can coexist peacefully. The onus is on Israel to stop this - it can do it anytime by bringing a ceasefire and ending apartheid.

Sad But True [Metallica] because of it's lyrics and overall tone.
or Fuel [Reload] due to it's speed and the energizing feeling it gives me.

Hi, I exist.
If you think I care about (american presidential) politics you are sorely mistaken
I like sirloin steak, which is obvious.
This also isn't serious, and the factbooks, despite my nation name being on them, will be on the serious one when i get round to it... Till then, this is a placeholder. They are also not done, as is evident... either way, don't expect anything serious.

My favorite song from Metallica (which comprises half of my music taste and my flag of course) is probably Harvester of Sorrow, from And Justice For All. It’s not that easy to describe why other than its heavy, badass rhythm and riffs. And although the instrumentals carry the song, the lyrics do it lots of favors too. You’d have to listen to it yourself to compare it to other songs that would apply to the same description. My favorite lyrics from this song is probably the whole first verse, it’s full of bitterness and anger. It’s easier to show than to tell with this song, so here’s a link.

My dad, however, would contend that One is the greatest Metallica song all-time. Which is fair; although not my favorite on the Justice album, it’s one of Metallica’s best, if not the best, to get adrenaline pumping. But I feel like the lyrics are a lot more important to this song being as good as it is compared to Harvester of Sorrow. It’s also much thrashier than Harvester, which can be good or bad depending on your preferences. Here is also a link for the song.

A few examples of songs I would consider to be Metallica’s greatest but also ones that aren’t as popular as the basics (that is to say Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Master of Puppets, or One), other than what I mentioned before, would be Welcome Home (Sanatarium), Orion, or The Unforgiven. Some more far fetched but great songs I would add as a personal touch are The Frayed Ends of Sanity,
Dyer’s Eve, Eye of the Beholder (a song which is incredibly relevant nowadays), Holier Than Thou and my favorite black album song, My Friend of Misery.

Also, I love Motorbreath too! I prefer it over Seek and Destroy, which is probably one of Metallica’s more overrated songs.

Hmm....a tough choice.

So many good songs like Master of Puppets, For whom the bell tolls, creeping death, ride the lighting, etc

One that I don't see mentioned, or hear played as often is Battery. I have always loved that song.
