Background
Fedravka is situated on high, semiarid plains in a cool to cold continental climate.
Inhabited by nomadic tribes under the autonomy of elected chieftans until the rise of the first princely states in the early 900s, then under vassalage to the Ralkovian emperors. Valkolicci influenced statelets contended for local power starting in the mid 1100s. Contention between local powers led to a state of almost continual warfare through the 1500s, with stability finally established under the Peace of Toreli in 1569. Increased trade brought additional conflict with neighboring Volskuan potentates in the early 1700s, leading to several successive loose alliances within today's Fedravkan territory.
Losses to Volskuan forces in 1754, 1801, and finally 1858 led to the need for a more modern organization of Fedravkan states. The Proclamation of Razmadze in 1860 settled the unification of the modern Fedravkan state as a confederacy, with an elective king, and a Chamber of Nobles acting as a legislature. Subsequent defeats at the hands of Volsku in 1875 and 1896 consolidated Fedravka's current borders. Ralkovian and Valkolicci influence remained strong in the Confederacy to this day. An elected House of Representatives was established in 1926, with little real power.
Shocked by the early results of the First Ralkovian War, Fedravka was overwhelmed by the Ralkovian resurgence, and lay helpless to Ralkovian demands for transit in it's buildup of forces in Agar-Na. Fedravka was the scene of bloody fighting as the Eitoan Army pursued the Ralkovians in the war. Tensions arose once again with Volsku in the wake of the war, in border areas where the Ralkovians permitted de-facto annexation of some Volskuan towns by Fedravka. The transfer of those territories back to Volsku was negotiated after skirmishes between Volsku and Fedravka in the wake of the Eitoan advance.
On October 21 at 0130 local time, elements of the Fedravkan Confederal Army, reinforced by some units of the capital gendarmerie entered the palace of King Simon II, and effected a coup against the current government. The coup was led by General Ferencz Kalman, commander of the Army’s 4th Division, headquartered in the capital, Batumi.
The factions support four candidates:
Crown Prince Menassah, the 49 year old nephew of King Simon. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Batumi, he has had a career in finance in the private sector, and served as Minister of Finance for three years in his late 20s, and more recently as Lord Commander of the Armed Forces for two years, his tenure ending shortly before the First Ralkovian War. The Crown Prince’s political leanings are generally unknown, but thougt to be acceptable to the Kalman junta currently in control of Fedravka. His contacts in the private sector have included working with Eitoan and Golden Throne banks, as well as some ties to the wealthy Ralkovian Traskov noble family, operating in Federal Ralkovia.
King Simon, 67, supported by old noble families. Suspected of sympathies with the deposed Raskov dynasty in Ralkovia, Simon still enjoys some popularity in the Chamber of Nobles.
General Ferencz Kalman, 55, the coup leader and regent. Kalman has somewhat of a reputation as a renegade in the military and his political leanings are generally unknown, except for his pronouncements post-coup regarding saving the nation from Communism and foreign financial interests.
Duke Valerian Abuselidze, 52. Abuselidze has ties with Valkolicci nobility, and is seen as a dark horse, possible compromise between Menassah and Kalman and Simon holdouts. He is little known outside of the Chamber of Nobles.
