Although no longer a megathread following changes to moderation policy in 2023, UKPT (as everybody calls it) technically remains the biggest and best venue for discussion of all matters relating to British politics and society. Think that Badenoch is bad enough? Irritated by Rachel Reeves' policy decisions? Absolutely convinced that leaving the EU was a terrible idea? I remember on 1 February 2016 when my high school in Edinburgh was victim of a bomb hoax. Numerous other schools across the city were victims of this hoax. We all had to evacuate, but unfortunately it was very windy and rainy as Storm Henry was in full flow.

Bomb hoax in exam season at University of Liverpool. They evacuated the accomm blocks and kicked everyone out, to send them to a different set of accomm blocks almost 2 miles away by bus.

As students in Uni Halls and with no clear reason why they were being evacuated (usually it's just the fire alarm, they used the fire alarm to evac), there were many in... states of undress. Not sure if there's a good way to handle that. There were more than a few people who were without clothes.

In the old thread I posted this:

It is 58 years today that the Aberfan disaster happened. A colliery spoil tip collapsed into a slurry, as much as 140,000 cubic yards of spoil slid down the hill and hit the village of Aberfan, engulfing the Pantglas Junior School and a row of houses. 116 children and 28 adults died. Later investigations revealed that the disaster could and should have been avoided, but the negligence of the National Coal Board meant it wasn't.

In the aftermath, a relief fund set up for the victims was raided to help pay for the clean-up, because the National Coal Board refused to pay for it. The NCB also only originally offered £50 per child to the families in compensation, before increasing that to £500 after an outcry. One parent, at the coroner's inquest, who had lost his wife and two sons, called out that their cause of death should be "buried alive by the National Coal Board".

There are still 2566 coal tips in Wales alone. Of those, 83 are classed as Category D - "A tip with the potential to impact public safety" and 267 are Category C - "A tip with the potential to impact public safety". Neither the Welsh nor national governments are clearing these unsafe tips, with Cardiff providing local authorities £44.4 million in capital funding for coal tip maintenance over financial years 2022 to 23, 2023 to 24 and 2024 to 25 - which is enough for a single inspection a year for Cat C tips, and two a year for Cat D ones. Another Aberfan could happen.

We've just had a reminder of the bold:

Homes have been evacuated after an apparent landslip in a former mining community.

One video on social media shows buildings deep in sludge and mud as water pours down what appears to be a street.

Another shows a white car stuck swamped among muck and rocks.

Some residents have already been evacuated to a local leisure centre, the council said.

Local resident Wayne Green said his whole street had been evacuated to the leisure centre late on Sunday night.

Previously, he said that the fire service had told him they were leaving an engine at the bottom of the street overnight.

"If any of the residents hear a siren then we have got to evacuate and they told us which route to take,” he said.

"They're going door to door telling the residents which way to evacuate the street if there is another slip, he said.

Blaenau Gwent council said: "We are aware that a number of households in the Cwmtillery area of Abertillery have been evacuated by emergency services.

"We are making arrangements for those affected and a rest centre has been set up at Abertillery Sports Centre. We are on site with partners assessing the situation."

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they have two fire engines at the scene but did not give any more detail.

Natural Resources Wales and the Coal Authority have been contacted for comment.

It's as much luck as good systems being in place that the alarm was raised here and the evacuation siren went off, but there are only so many near misses you can have before one hits. The budget had £25 million set aside for maintenance and remediation works on Welsh coal tips but that money is just for 2025-26 and unless similar funding is repeated year on year, it won't be enough to maintain the tips we have, nor provide oversight over the majority of coal tips, which are privately owned. There is currently not a statutory requirement for private landowners to actually address the problems of coal tips in the law, and it's high time either Westminster or Tŷ Hywel addressed that.

It did feel almost redundant to post this link, considering that most people currently in the UK are likely already aware without even needing to check the news, but Storm Bert has now brought 150+ flood warnings which include one ‘danger to life’ warning in Northamptonshire. Despite some people thinking that it would be a weekend-only weather event which stopped by Monday it now appears that thanks to this massive disruption in main roads and train lines it is likely to continue into the week.

Sending hugs to everyone affected by this, do stay safe.

I wasn't checking the news this weekend, I was more concerned with the temperature drop last week. Wasn't aware there was a storm until the major "storm damage" reporting came in. Luckily I seem to be far north enough to not be affected.

I'm still mad that the Beeb hasn't taken the obvious step of when there is a Met Office weather warning, to link to that weather warning article, in their reporting. I shouldn't need to click off the news, go to Google, and Google for myself, "met weather warnings". Just link to it!
