Automobiles: What are you driving, what do you wish to drive

Postby Elwher » Wed Nov 20, 2024 1:05 pm

There seems to be no existing automobile thread at present, so let's start one.

I am driving a 2003 Jaguar XJ8 which I got from a very neglectful owner; it is now (finally) running well. https://www.flickr.com/photos/193424809@N02/54153706436/in/dateposted-public/

That would be soul-crushing. I'm sorry to hear. :(

I drive a Civic.
I wish to drive a better (ie older) Civic, ideally a K-swapped EF, although an EG or EK would also be acceptable.

I drive a Tesla model 3. It's like 6 years old now or so. It runs perfectly and I'll probably keep driving it until the wheels fall off.

I had to drive a rental the other day. Like a two year old Mazda SUV. It felt like I went back in time ten years compared to driving my Tesla. I felt a sudden urge to yell 'yabba dabba doo' and get a pet dinosaur.

2017 Chevrolet Impala LS. No options except the V6, and it will move.

I'm basically the modern version of that guy in the '60s who drove a plain-Jane Biscayne with a 409 hiding under the hood...

I got a 2018 Mazda3 GT... which was just issued a recall for the sensing camera. But, the car's been wonderful.

Don't have a dream car, I just take whatever I can get.

2016 Toyota Fortuner.

I wish I did not have to drive. But if I truly had to drive a car it'd be another Toyota but maybe a lil smaller like a Raize or even a hatchback like a Wigo.

I have an 06 Tacoma. I want to keep driving this thing until the wheels fall off, at which point I will put new wheels on it and force it to keep driving.

Edit: barring that, I will get a new 06 Tacoma and continue to do the same thing.

That's a great specimen, how is the reliability? I know Jags can be very hit and miss in that regard. Have you been a Jag man for a long time?

I bought it this spring, trading off my 1978 MG Midget that you can see parked next to it.

When I got it, it was running reasonably well; it just seemed a bit rough. It turned out to have bad injectors, the wrong spark plugs, which were installed finger-tight only, air leaks before and after the filters, a bad MAF sensor, and the PCV hoses leaked as well. Now that these are fixed, it runs smoothly and accelerates like a dream.

I consider the fact that it ran at all, let alone as well as it did when I bought it, to be a tribute to Jaguar engineering and reliability. Long-term, it needs some suspension work in the rear and detailing both inside and out, but those can wait until I have paid off the repairs I had done already. For a vehicle with over 200k, I am very satisfied.

Jags, from what I have read and seen so far, are a great car to drive and a pain to fix.

Another fun little car too.

Now that these are fixed, it runs smoothly and accelerates like a dream.

Those problems are expected of a car that is now 21 years old, especially if the previous owner was neglectful.

I have always had a soft spot for Jags. If money was no object I'd have an E-Type or a 1990s XJS. However, these days I drive a Nissan. Newer Jaguars however don't really inspire me, and them being built by Tata now makes me sceptical of their build quality and long term reliability.

My putter car is a 1996 Saturn wagon. And the I will probably drive it into the ground. It is still going strong. The farm truck doesn't count. I wish I had never gotten rid of the 64 Grand Tourismo. She was my favorite. I would probably want a 1964 Studebaker Grand Tourismo Hawk with an R1 or R2 package.

On my third F150 King Ranch.
Traded up for a 2024 earlier this year.
Feel weird in a car nowadays. I miss the big old pimp mobiles.
A mid 70's Cadillac Coupe De Ville with GM's last classic big block motor, a 500 cubic inch V8, would stretch my legs nicely.
A 460 cubic inch Ford 385 V8 powered Mark IV Continental would also do.

I dont have a particular car I wish to drive, but the car I have fits the type of car I like pretty well. Im fortunate to have it, won it in an auction for relatively cheap.

I had one of those. Admittedly it was 25 years ago, but I still have fond memories. The seats were comfy as fuck.
