Can yellow dog democrats return?

Postby Jim Folsom » Sun Nov 10, 2024 4:23 pm

A Yellow Dog Democrat is a political term used to describe a voter who is extremely loyal to the Democratic Party and would vote for a candidate, regardless of their qualifications or policies, solely because they are a Democrat. This term originated in the late 19th century in the Southern United States, where voters would allegedly “vote for a yellow dog before they would vote for any Republican,” or “vote for a yellow dog if he ran on the Democratic ticket.” This was mainly a term that described southern democrats in the 19th to mid 20th century. They were usually moderate or conservative voters.

I for one don't think they can due to the far left taking control of the democratic party. I would only see it happening if the republican party strayed too far right or became elitist like they were in the 19th and 20th century.

This would be a very good question, if the Democrats hadn't radicalized themselves to the point of no return. They can't appeal to common Americans anymore, and I suspect that some of their more moderate members will simply split off and form a third party.

I know a few people feel the same.

on economic issues, the establishment of the faction may be more centrist than the republican establishement
on social issues, both parties have obviously moved to the left

I believe you call those "Blue MAGA" nowadays.

The descendants of the Yellow Dog Democrats are the typical Republicans in the Deep South today. The types who will not vote Democrat under any circumstances.

I for one would like to see a moderate democrat running for president because I don't think that the common voter wants a radicalized presidential candidate like kamala that fed votes to Trump

Those voters by definition aren't yellow dogs.

Sort of. Before the 2000 election when tv pundits started consistently tagging votes leading to Democrat held states (or Congressional Districts) blue, and the GOP ones red, the phrase Red Blooded referred generally to a Democrat or someone to the Left, and True Blue generally referred to a Republican or someone to the right. The media change flipped the script. Historically, and still worldwide, Leftist ideologies generally fly red flags, and Conservative ideologies have been identified with blue flags. The phrase "blue dog" democrat refers to someone in the Democrat Party who has Republican leanings if not an outright republican in policy. I am 60-something, and still have to make a mental note that Red State now refers to GOP held, and Blue State now refers to Democrat held.

Southerners love this country and are the backbone of the country. I'm from Alabama and it is a peaceful state no one there unlike CNN wants you to believe wants this country to die.

You can also say the Yellow Dog Democrats in the South towards the party in its current state are much of the black residents, simply because the racists vote Republican. They'll not use "Yellow Dog Democrat" as a label though.
