[DRAFT] Education on Genocides Act

Postby Laver Island » Sat Nov 09, 2024 1:59 pm

My first attempt at writing a WA proposal. Feedback is much appreciated! I am unsure if the category and strength are correct.

Education for Awareness of Genocides
Category: Educational
Strength: Mild

Deeply Concerned by the ongoing prevalence of discrimination, hatred, and intolerance in societies, which can contribute to the conditions that enable genocides,

Noting that the inherently political nature of genocides can contribute to the risk of revisionism and denial of genocides,

Recognising the potential that educational programs that address the causes, consequences, and prevention of genocides can help with fostering understanding,
empathy, and respect for human life,

Affirming that education about genocide is essential for honouring the memory of victims, promoting empathy, and strengthening the foundations of peaceful and inclusive societies.

The General Assembly thereby,
    1. Requires member states to integrate the study of genocides, massacres, and atrocities into educational curricula across all levels of education, ensuring that:
      a. The curricula cover the causes, characteristics and consequences of such events;
      b. and includes the detrimental effects of genocide revisionism and denial;
      c. and involves the usage of age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational material;
      d. and encourages students to observe annual remembrance days.

    2. Requires member states to establish courses for educators to ensure they are equipped to teach these sensitive topics effectively, with an emphasis on empathy, accuracy and respectful discourse.

    3. Encourages member states to collaborate with international organisations to develop standardised and consistent content for the curriculum.

    4. Urges all member states to approach the study of genocides, massacres, and atrocities with impartiality, including diverse examples without exclusion, irrespective of the political sensitivities surrounding certain events, to ensure balanced and unbiased education on these subjects.

Support in principle.

One suggestion at this time (there may be more later): require, or at least make explicit that it is permitted, that the material is taught in an age-appropriate manner since your proposal requires it to be taught at all levels of education.

Ah, okay. I assumed it already was covered but thanks for pointing it out.

Support in principle, but is there any way this effort would be aided by the WA besides encouragement?

Also make sure you're saving your old drafts and presenting them somewhere in the original post or thread!

There is the possibility of the WA creating and imposing the curriculum. Although, I am unsure how the WA would go about creating such a curriculum.

"Opposed. Section 1 of GAR#80 already has this covered to the greatest extent that the WA should interfere in the curriculum: " A fair and impartial recollection of historical national and international events, politics and society".

2 things I would specifically like to get some thoughts on:

1: Do I need to include definitions of genocides, massacres and atrocities, or is it enough that such definitions already are covered by other passed proposals?

2: I would like to know if more can be added to section 2 so that it achieves what it aims to achieve.
