The pilots were ordered to down the MiG. When the aircraft flew over an inhabited are the F16 downed it using (AIM)9Ls.

The truth is that the crash was a Soviet recce MiG25R with Algerian markings that crashed according our investigators reported to a malfunction of the oxygen system as cause of the pilot's death. And the visual report of the intercepting F16s pilots said they believed the pilot to be dead. That was not admitted and by the Russian authorities until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

So my military closed the crash site an the death soviet pilot was retrieved and the rest of the crash sent to an Òdena Air Base an carefully inspected by NATO officials.
To add more mystery my Government said that the Crash was a meteo blimp and neither the URSS or Algeria made any statement.
