Winter’s Wake: Post-apocalyptic faction RP

Postby Kreigsreich of Iron » Thu Nov 07, 2024 11:01 am

“ Cold and silence. Nothing quieter than snow. The sky screams to deliver it, a hundred banshees flying on the edge of the blizzard. But once the snow covers the ground, it hushes as still as my heart.”

Laurie Halse Anderson

When the snows came, none were spared. All were buried under the snows, no matter what collection of colored fabrics they happened to bear on their arms, no matter what their hormonal inclinations, or whatever god they had futilely hoped would save them. Well, not all. By some cruel whim of Mother Nature, some of humanity was left alive to struggle and rebuild, a few straggling corpses not yet aware of their death arising from the snows. As they trudged across the icy wasteland, they all seemed possessed of a singular goal: to rebuild human civilization from the ground up. The weaker perished or fell behind the strong: the ones with the presence of mind and strength to succeed in this Stygian new world.

WIP
Faction name: Cratist union.

Faction symbol: A hammer on a red background with an Olive branch under it. The Olive branch symbolizes peace and the hammer is for its socialism.

Faction leader name: Crator Olor

Faction ideology: Syndicalisim with a Monarchy.

Faction special technology: Efficiency.

Faction background:

After the Russian ceasefire with Ukraine in 2026 the Donbas and the oblasts of Zhaporizia and Kherson were annexed by Russia, soon after the snow started falling. Soon the already unstable Russia would collapse as Sevastopol falls to a Syndicalist coup. They call themselves Cratists after their leader or “crator” Olor. They quickly established control over Crimea, waiting out the worst of the snows. As things get better they March through the frozen Azov sea capturing Rostov cementing dominance over the region. WIP

Faction location: Crimea and the Azov coast.

Tagged for interest, might have some fun making a Stratusian faction that is fighting a democratic faction and a ultranationalist faction and have them deadlocked in a post apocalyptic civil war similar to the Cultural Revolution's "Violent Struggle"

Could we get some background on this world? When did the snows start falling and when did they stop? What caused this ice age, and are there other meteorological and or natural phenomenon which we should be aware of as a result of this period?

How big is the area we are playing in? The entire former Earth? A single former country? What? What are the limits on tech and size?

The snows started falling a decade ago, and have ceased recently.
There isn’t, beyond increased snowstorms and other cold-related phenomena.

The entire Earth, modern day, starting population is maxed at five thousand.

The Champions of Gaia

Symbol: A pale blue pine tree on a field of white
Faction Leader: Harald Varheim
Location: Duluth, Minnesota
Ideology: Eco-Futurism - The Gaians seek to rebuild the best parts of the old world without repeating her mistakes, and will militantly prevent others from disrupting that effort.
Faction Special Technology: Bio-Engineering - Mostly composed of students from Iowa State University and their various research professors and instructors, the Gaians took most of the technologies, prototypes, and cutting edge research of the institutes there with them when they migrated north. The lion's share have been useless in the wake of the world-wide societal collapse, but several key cultivars and experiments have been integral in their survival, and they have retained some of that knowledge.
Backstory: Idealists, realists, hard-nosed survivalists, the Champions or Gaians, depending on who you ask about their name, are many things. Drawn from a motley band of survivors from the American Midwest who ranged north toward the comparative water-richness and temperate ecology of the Great Lakes, the Gaians have mostly reverted to a pre-Industrial level of societal and technological sophistication in the intervening decade, but still maintain aspirations of much greater. The Elders, as the professors and instructors of the University have come to be called, have been integral in holding together the disparate viewpoints and aspirations of the Gaians. The Apprentices, on the other hand, vastly outnumber their older counterparts, and are a hot mixture of students, athletes, blue-collar workers, and a medley of scavengers and survivors accumulated as they migrated north. Led by a nominally meritocratic Arbor Congress, the Gaians have greeted rising temperatures with cautious optimism and renewed interest in the world around their bayside home.

The Champions hail from the Twin Ports, a fortified settlement notable for her immense trees and thick scrap-walls on the shores of Lake Superior. A sprawling city with many bridges and ferries crossing the St. Louis River, the Twin Ports maintain a small but effective trading fleet which plies the waters of the Lake during the warm summer months, and the icy frozen body of water also hosts extensive sledge and sled merchant companies during winter. Though it may seem incongruous to the nominal aims of the Gaians, the great docked decaying cargo vessels beached here are the primary source of resources for the inhabitants of the Twin Ports, ready-to-use batches of refined iron, coal, and even valuable steel having been more than sufficient thus far for the needs of the four thousand souls who have eked out an existence here in the north. Supplemented with quick-growing and hardy black-leafed ironwood trees, the material wealth available to the Gaians is formidable compared to the harsher wastes which can be found away from the verdant shores of the Lake.

To say that the Gaians have much influence beyond the Ports would be a misnomer - less than five hundred men serve full time in the Terran Guard, a military force little disposed to do much aside from ward trade routes against banditry, escort the odd caravan, and man the walls of the city. That said, as the raider bands have dwindled in the cold wastes, the burgeoning population of the Twin Ports has become an increasing asset. Unlike many factions the Gaians and their hardy cultivars have had little trouble securing calorie surpluses even during the deepest winters, and a new generation of sons and daughters is now growing strong and hale under the Minnesotan sun. Perhaps soon it will be time for the mandate of the Growing Tree to look beyond her own affairs to the disordered world within her grasp.

Faction name: The Worker Councils
Faction symbol: hammer, gears, and wrench, black and red flag
Faction leader name: The Comitee of Councilmen
Faction location: Saarland, Luxembourg and Strasbourg
Faction ideology: (feel free to make your own or simply pick from a pre-existing one) Egalitarianism, Communalism, Syndicalism
Faction special technology: Advanced Coal Extraction
Faction background (200 word minimum): The European Union, 5 years before the Winter's Wake, when alarming news began to be received regarding the continuing worsening of the world climate, invited member countries to build bunkers to collect the population in the event of a natural disaster. The governments of Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Norway were the first to take action and begin the construction of the aforementioned bunkers and shelters. Many countries followed later, but they arrived too late. When the apocalypse struck, communications and transportation were the first to fail, and, unable to coordinate relief efforts to the regions most affected by the calamity, governments across Europe ordered civilian evacuations to the safe shelters built in the meantime. that the lucky few were accepted into bunkers, on the surface, civilization collapsed on itself, and those who failed to enter the shelters sought shelter in safe places, such as subways and other underground installations. In the aftermath of the disaster, few survivors remained standing. Obviously, the governments had wasted no time in evacuating the most important government and military officials to the shelters, and, with the situation desperate, many people were no longer happy with the old order ruling here: One after another, violent revolutions bled underground Europe dry, with hundreds of deaths. The workers' councils themselves were born after a violent revolution in Strasbourg, where ordinary citizens and workers took control, this happened about 6 years after the first snowfall. Radio communications went up in smoke after the fall of the underground governments in Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Brussels and London. The fall of London marked the end of the old underground governments, and also the end of the EU and intercontinental communications. In recent years, the Workers' Councils managed to gain ground in Luxembourg, taken diplomatically, and Saarland, taken violently.

(Gonna join, though since I'm still revamping my country lore that I haven't touched in a while, It won't be too related to anything about my nation. Perhaps an expeditionary group that got onto the planet during the worst time and now having to recover with what they had)

Faction Name: The Lost Expedition of El Dorado
Faction Symbol: a Golden Gallic rooster
Faction Leader: René Pascal
Faction Location: Starting in an Underground Bunker in Brest. But most likely quick to claim all of Britanny
Faction: Interim Dictatorship
Faction special technology: Underground Bunker [Context:] Once landing on the planet. The whole expedition was done in an operation heavily underfunded due to many not seeing any potential coming out of the planet. Funds were low and the transition to allow the eventual spy operation to infiltrate the planet would have to do, and a base of operations was implemented near the outskirts of Brest. The Bunker would still be very well developed. Having capabilities in manufacturing and industrial operations in a regular city. If given enough resources, And even had a Nuclear reactor, after a decade of mostly saving as many resources as possible started to make this seem more like a hazard than an achievement. For now, without the resources, the Bunker is just an oversized empty ghost town. But if supplied with the right supplies the Nuclear reactor is brought back to its full power. The faction can operate a decent operation even in the shithole this planet really turned out to be.
Faction background: During The Imperial Department of Exterior Testing's extreme expansion of operations across an increasing amount of new ambitious locations. Many operations were sent to send and slowly infiltrate planets. One of these planets was on the far back of the Department's plans. Simply because it was far away and proved to have little potential for testing. Leaving only a minor crew to land on the planet with basic technology that would be enough to deal with modern humans if they tried anything. With this, the expedition mainly consisted of Frenchmen who were capable enough to be put in an expedition but by this point most already had been filled out. And so they just handed the expedition to them. Which was eventually named "the Expedition of El Dorado" strangely by Frenchmen. Either way, they landed in Brittany where they hoped would be isolated enough from any meddling governments. While picking Brest to land to have a sufficient supply source in case they needed more than they already had. After the project of building the "Gallic Centre d’infiltration" Eventually the expedition would settle in and prepare the world for the eventual arrival of the Department's Agent. But that never came, what came was a complete disaster in which the world was engulfed with the screams of the blizzard. Thank god they built an Underground Bunker which was not for plot purposes. Of course, many of the expeditions were out when the disaster started. Leaving many hurrying back to get to the shelter, attracting attention along with them. As such when René Pascal, the head of the new Bunker Administration. waited for the original leader of the expedition to come back, but he never did. In fact, dozens did not, and those that did come back came with a few refugees who hoped they would be taken in. While René was ready to leave them out to die. He couldn't see himself doing that and allowed them in. As such began the decade of silence, as life went on in the mostly cozy bunker life surprisingly mostly went along well, while there wasn't television or internet. Basic necessities were provided and energy from the Nuclear reactor allowed many electronics to be still used. Yet this life woulden't last long. As once people began to realize the storm wasn't getting better after a year or two. The supply of uranium supplying the reactor was slowly reaching its end. Finally, a harsh rationing began. Electricity was conserved as much as possible and only a few unique requests for the occasional use of the Microwave or other restricted electronics were given. Would the bunker be in a worse situation than even outside? Yet luck seemed to be within the Rooster as conditions slowly began to improve outside and perhaps could mean proper expeditions outside without risking the very devastation of losing one person. Now perhaps, even if it seemed the whole expedition to this planet would at least lead to something good. A dawn of a new people, still waiting for what they hoped to be at this point, Their savior...
