American Politics: Turnabout Trump

Two things are on the minds of every Democrat in the country: "Well" and "shit". Last night, Donald Trump was re-elected to the position of President: the first since 1892, when Grover Cleveland was re-elected as the 24th President after previously serving as the 22nd. We're still getting returns for the House, but the GOP has taken both the Presidency and the Senate.

Bernie Sanders has already promised a progressive re-assessment and re-grouping throughout early 2025, and the Democratic Party is absolutely in a tizzy. Kamala Harris has conceded, and Trump has already given out myriad promises of deportations, tariffs, and tax cuts. He's promising once more to Make America Great Again, but I think a question on the minds of many is if it was ever great at all given the events of last night. There's one more question on the minds of everybody: where do the Democrats go come 2024?

Some are saying left. Some are saying right. I'm saying whatever gets them the most votes: which will probably be a leftward pivot giving Bernie's insurrection, but we will see if things go the way of Labour.

Regardless, Trump is back and he's here to stay.

Well Kamala Harris's conceedance speech was around 12 minutes long and in my opinion didn't really give me any inspiration as a political leader but maybe others feel otherwise? She did hone in on don't give up hope as a message.

Trump's stated position is that the deportation of illegal immigrants will include reclassifying currently-legal immigrants as illegal and then deporting them.

Of course, he also wants to be able to deport people without trial, so we'll see how long it'll be before a legal resident gets "accidentally" caught up in the deportation op.

Yeah anytime a Soviet leader died they would play Swan Lake as an interregnum to keep the peace until the party made the decision who to go to next as the leader. Gorbachev was arrested as his vacation home, and Soviet hardliners in August 1991 mobilized the military to try and prevent the signing of the New Union Treaty (which aimed at empowering the Republics) and that part succeeded. The rest of the coup failed due to resistance from the Soviet public and bickering from the emergency committee. Ironically the cited reason for Gorbachev's disappearance was poor health, and he outlived all of the coup organizers by decades.
