[idea] GDP/Population: Addition of Quadrillion, Septillion

Postby Consigahria » Wed Nov 06, 2024 12:56 pm

To the NationStates Development Team:

I hope this message finds you well! I suggest an enhancement for displaying GDP in our NationStates nations. Currently, the display caps at the “trillion” level (formatted as ##,##0 trillion), but with the economies of some nations growing significantly, it would be beneficial to include options to display values in higher units like “quadrillion” and “septillion” insofar as GDP.

Adding “quadrillion” and “septillion” would more accurately represent those nations with especially vast economies. This change would not only improve the realism of NationStates but also allow players with substantial GDPs to enjoy the scale of their achievements in a visible and accessible format.

If the feature could be introduced as an optional toggle or as an automatic adjustment based on a nation’s GDP size, it would add flexibility for all users while maintaining the simplicity of the interface.

Moreover, an option could be included in a nation's settings to have the population shown as #0.##0 billion or #0 billion ##0 million. That would be a neat addition. For those players who enjoy delving into the economic or demographic aspects of their nations, this addition would bring a richer layer of immersion, allowing them to see their nation's financial and population growth represented more accurately as they advance.

Thank you for considering this idea! I look forward to seeing how NationStates continues to collaborate, evolve, and improve.

Warm regards,
K. Davis, Consigahria

I'm not aware of any real-world economies that have a monetary value expressed higher than "trillions"...

That being said, I like your idea. In fact, I think it could be extended by also implementing the concepts of short and long scales for large numbers. For those of us with nations where the computed population is in the billions, one needs to assume short scale usage--but if you adopted long scale usage, then the unit would be "milliard"...
- [OOC] Me: male; Caucasian; atheist (don't believe); agnostic (but don't know if one or more exist); LGBT+ ally...
- NS stats and policies are mostly canon and represent my world views... Some minor hard and soft SF overtones--not that SF is clearly defined anyway...
- Of the various tests available, I chose
RightValues. Result: technocracy.

As a native speaker of dutch, that uses the long scale, i find it confusing and prefer the short scale.

I like OP's suggestion, because that would allow comparing nations in a glimp, whereas this is very hard when writing out very large numbers.
