Intrigue in the Celestial Dynasty (Fantasy/OOC/Open)

Postby New Aeyariss » Mon Nov 04, 2024 3:26 pm

In the beginning, there was only Shangdi, or as the Nuzhen call him, the Khan of Heaven. He was the one who separated Yin from Yang, and spun the five elements into existence. Him sages of old recognised as the Tian (Heaven) who rules over the affairs of men.

Shangdi however was lonely, and thus he created the celestials. They were lesser spirits, who surrounded the throne of Shangdi. The Lord of Heaven appointed them all functions, assembling them into a celestial bureaucracy. They were to take part in ruling the universe, but worship would only be given to Shangdi.

However, one of the celestials - Hongselung, a dragon with his scales of color of blood was discontent with this situation. He launched a rebellion against the Shangdi, convincing 1/3 of the celestials to join it. His rebellion failed, and he was thrown down from the Pure Land, becoming the first Yaoguai.

Hongeslung however was not done. In an act of venegance, he convinced the first humans to rebel against Shangdi. Thus humanity has accumlated enormous amount of bad karma, and the connection between humans and Shangdi was severed.

Thus all under heaven got under the rule of Hongselung and his Yaoguai. They corrupted the nascent humanity, using their powers to infalte human desires. Wars became common, immorality - the norm.

But Shangdi did not like what he saw. Despite his love for justice, he also felt compassion. And thus, one night he came to a young Nuzhen cheiftain, Wanyan Yingge, in a dream. The cheiftain was terrified at first, but Shangdi calmed him down. He told the man:

"Arise, and fear not. For I have bestown you with the Mandate of Heaven! You will be a great ruler, and your horse shall trample under it's hooves all that oppose you."

And so Yingge begun his conquests. His first target were the local Luzhen tribes. He defeated them with ease, unifying them under his rule and proclaiming himself Khan. The Liang dynasty, fearful of this new warlord, sent an army against him; the army was soundly defeated

Then Yingge turned his gaze east, towards the great steppe where the Yoghuz dwelt. He declared war on them. Some of their tribes tried resisting, and were soundly defeated. Others joined him and proclaimed him their khan. Yingge was now more powerful than ever, and turned his gaze south.

The Liang dynasty has turned corrupt, and as the result lost the mandate of heaven. Various rebelions sparked against it, and one of the rebels managed to capture the capital. He then promptly sacked it, murdering the Emperor. All order collapsed.

YIngge approached the great wall with his army. An ethnic Chu general, Tian Xiaowen, concluded that the Luzhen khan was a more just ruler than the rebels and Liang tyrants; and joined him, opening the great wall. Nothing could stop Yingge now. His horsemen darted forward, sweeping aside all the opposition.

Soon he captured Anjing. There, in the middle of the Tianamen square, Yingge claimed the mandate of Heaven. He was no longer a mere khan - now he openly proclaimed himself the Emperor, first of the new dynasty - The Yin.

Yingge however could not conquer the South, as his horse armies proven unsuited to fight in area of rugged hills and wide rivers. Thus the south remained under the rule of warlords, who were either former Liang generals or rebels.

Yingge ruled long, and justly. But like all men, he died and was given posthumous name of Wuzong. In his place, his son Wanyan Dorgon - assumed the throne. Will he be able to surpass his father - or will he lead his father's legacy to ruin?

ORGANISATION OF THE YIN DYNASTY

The new dynasty, created by Yingge, has adopted the bureaucratic organisation of the Chu peoples they have conquered. The officials come from two sources. The first source of the officials are the 8 banners - both the Luzhen Eight Banners, and the Yoghuz Eight Banners - which form the military aristocracy and the elite units. The other source of the officials are the Chu scholar-officials, who are appointed via the imperial examination system.

The most important official in the Empiere is of course, the Emperor. He is distinguished by wearing a yellow robe with bronze dragon on it. His power is near absolute.

The Emperor presides over the Grand Council, a bureaucratic system formed by six boards. Due to the ethnic composition of the Empire, each board is headed by a minister and a vice minister. If the minister is an ethnic Chu, his vice minister will be a banner man; and vice versa.

The six boards are:

- Board of the Civil Appointments: Oversees appointments of all essential personnel in the government; also their salaries. It also receives reports from the governors.

- Board of Revenue: Is responsible for the Empire's finances.

- Board of Rites: Oversees court protocol and religious matters.

- Board of War: oversees the national defense.

- Board of Punishments: responsible for the justice system.

- Board of Works: responsible for various public projects and infrastructure.

The Empire is split into 18 provinces, each with their own centrally appointed governor.

The Emperor also maintains a large harem (Inner palace). The Inner palace is headed by the Empress, which has near absolute power there. Aside from that, there are two noble consorts, four consorts, and as many concubines as the Emperor wants to keep.

The military is split between the bannerman formations made of the Luzhen and Yoghuz, and the Green Standard Army which is made of ethnic Chu loyal to the new dynasty. The Bannermen are proffesional, standing troops; while the Green Standard army are a network of part-time militas mobilised in time of need and enforcing law in peacetime.

ETHNICITIES:

- Chu: Most of the Empire's populations is made of the Chu. They are the sedetary people who developed an andvanced culture.

- Luzhen: The Luzhen are people living North - East of the Great wall. They usually live a semi-sedetary life, living from farming and hunting.

- Yoghuz: A group of steppe nomad tribes.

- Bod: Inhabitants of the mountain range south-west of the Yin Dynasty's territory.

Is it possible to play as a regional warlord who defected to the invaders in the south, sort of like the three feudatories?

I mean I want the story centered around the Emperor's court in Tianjing. But we could make a Chu warlord who sided with the Yin, one who will later rebel.

I think I’ll play as a Chu guy in charge of the board of war then. I will have an application up today or tomorrow.

I do not mind but I need to note that Liang Dynasty is dead. The southern warlords formed their own petty dynasties.

But what if the plan of the person I'm playing is to reunite both the northern Yin dynasty and also the petty ethnically Chu states in the south to reform the Liang Empire?

P.S. Is the Yin Dynasty this Yin (银), this Yin (殷), this Yin (寅), this Yin (尹), or some other Yin?

P.P.S.: In your setting lore, you might wanna chance Hongselong 红色龙 for Honglong 红龙,because they both mean the same thing but Hongselong is longer and doesn't really roll off the tongue well.

Nation Name: Second Sina
RP SAMPLE: 5th of January 2801 Common Era

It was on the edge of the Qingyun Republic's territories that contact was remade with the outside world.

Ever since the War for the Outer Heavens, the Qingyun Republic's only link to the outside world was through the 44th- stories of the chaos, of other nations, of the UNS slowly arising, etc. The 44th was currently engaged in some sort of mission about several hundred light years away- relatively far. The Qingyun Republic had heard from the 44th about the rise of the alien races and the 44th's attempts to destroy them- that it was not worried about.

But the day inevitably came when the murmurs of "aliens" and "foreigners" was not heard on the docks where the 44th loaded their starships for conquest or unloaded whilst returning with fresh goods and technology for the Republic- but in the Qingyun Parliament Hall.

"Well, what do we know about those signals from the outside world?" came the cry of a relatively young Parliament member. He would learn to be less direct in years to come- he had been elected to the Parliament a mere two weeks ago.

The leader of the group of astro-scientists that had first detected the first of the three signals knocks the microphone to ensure it is working, before announcing:
"They must think this area to be empty, and for good reason- the 44th swears to keep us a secret. The signal seems to be in Galactic Common, though due to the corruption of the neutrino-signal caused by the distance it travelled, it is undecipherable, save for some simpler signals reminiscent of the letters of Galactic Common."

"Well then," announces a particularly prominent female member of the Neo-Aurelist Party, for there has never been a President or Prime Minister of the Republic since its formation, "you have heard the astronomer. Should we reply?"

"We cannot be too reliant on the 44th- let us do it, but we shall not state that we are the main funders of the 44th, nor that we loathe the UNS, but we will send a greeting." This statement by a male member of the Libertarian Zhaoist Party brought cries of agreement- it was a solid plan for now.

And thus, a dual message, drafted by the Parliament, was sent in Common directly to the source of the message from the infinite rapture of space. The two messages state thus:

Hello to the fellow sons of Earth. We are peaceful. If the receiver is not descended from the birthplace of all men, then please do open the second message.

If you launch a single weapon at us, we will not hesitate to retaliate.

And thus the kinetic missiles were pointed at the direction of which the message came from, ready to fire the moment the Parliament orders it.

Zhu Ci Zhu broke from the tradition of using the Five Elements to name the children of the Zhu royal family, instead choosing the character Chao (meaning dynasty, court, etc.) in hopes that Zhu He Chao would one day reform the Liang Dynasty. Zhu He Chao, reading the ancient classics Zhu Cizhu had brought from the Forbidden Palace when he fled, along with learning from a local alchemist the ways of science, grew to be a learned man. When he was eighteen, he went for the Imperial Examinations (he had bribed the examiner with a pearl (yet another thing Zhu Ci Zhu had been smart enough to take from the Palace as he fled) into letting him in despite never having attended the province-based examinations that are a prerequisite for attending the examinations), and got first place. He was accepted as a 工部尚书 and slowly ascended the ranks, eventually becoming a 军机大臣, one of the five at the Grand Council in charge of military affairs. Zhu He Chao has never forgotten his origins however, and plots to restore the rightful reign of the Liang dynasty.

Indolent perhaps, and not known to show much promise in martial, scholarly or any other pursuits but a good person. The young man who returned to was by contrast morose, cold, cruel and merciless. He walked with a limp he did not posses when he left the Luzen lands and had several scars. What happened in the five years remains clouded in mystery. When asked about them young Šurgaqi would react with violence and anger at those questioning him.

If the young princeling had lost his warmth and good nature he had however gained determination and dedication during his years as a hostage. From the moment of his return he began to dedicate every waking hour of his existence to training in the art of war. He soon was a superb equestrian, a lethal swordsman and a skilled archer. He eagerly sought the company of warlords and commanders trying to learn from them how to lead armies and command soldiers. Though the cold youth took neither man nor woman into his confidence he neither made much secret of the ends of this obsessive behavior. Šurgaqi desired the ruination of the Liang Empire.

After the death of their father Šurgaqi pledged allegiance to his brother without much enthusiasm but also without any hesitation. When Yingge made war on the other Luzhen tribes Šurgaqi was his brother's most capable commander. He relished war and only in it did the morose and humorless prince show emotion of any kind. Incessant in the drilling and leading of troops he pushed the nascent banner army of the Wanyan ever onward in their attempt to unify the Luzhen.

As the unification got under way, the Liang dynasty, accustomed to playing divide and rule among the Luzhen grew weary of the Wanyan. When a Liang ambassador visited the Wanyan court and demanded Yingge seize his conquests Šurgaqi begged his brother for permission to kill the ambassador, but Yingge, not yet ready for open hostility with the Liang dynasty refused causing a serious rift between the brothers during which Šurgaqi briefly went into exile with the Yoghuz. When Yingge, over the objections of the Liang, continued his expansion they where however reconciled and Šurgaqi once again found himself at the head of the Wanyan army as it began an invasion of the Yoghuz lands. Šurgaqi surprised many at his brother's court when he agreed to marry a Yoghuz princess, thus helping facilitate the unification of the Yoghuz with the Luzhen. Few had fought the belligerent, brutal and bellicose warlord capable of such a tactful diplomatic maneuver. A story is told among the Yoghuz that the marriage between Šurgaqi and Temülün made Yingge so happy that he offered to grant his younger brother any favor he would ask of him, including even the leadership of the Wanyan state and that Šurgaqi asked his brother simply to destroy the Liang. The story is almost certainly apocryphal but probably telling of Šurgaqi's character and priorities.

Something that is however true is that when when a Liang ambassador appeared at the Wanyan court demanding that Yingge submit to the dynasty Šurgaqi rose before the Deliberative Council of Princes and Ministers and demanded that the ambassador be made the first fatality in a war against the Liang. The ambassador heard of this and spoke disparagingly of Šurgaqi's time as a hostage, suggesting some scandal or impropriety on the part of the then hostage. Šurgaqi responded by bashing the ambassador's head in with a rock in full view of the entire Wanyan court. This did not endear him to his brother but Yingge was now minded to go to war and not about the loose his greatest general and when Šurgaqi asked for it, Yingge granted him the ambassador's wife and concubine as a gift. What happened to those two women is not entirely clear. At the tamer end of the rumors they both became concubines of Šurgaqi and died soon after of natural courses. At the other end of the spectrum of rumor are half whispered tales of nightmarish horror, involving such things as the forcible consumption of the ambassador's corpse, torture and abuse and an agonizing death. Even people of great courage, might and power are loath to ask Prince Qing the truth of these matters. Even at the most extreme the rumors where however but a foretaste of what was to come. For now the dream of Šurgaqi would at last come true. The Wanyan would go to war with the Liang and in this war Šurgaqi would make his mark on history and forever etch his name in the collective subconscious of an entire nation as a scourge and terror haunting the nightmares of his prey.

When the Liang empire invaded the Wanyan khanate Šurgaqi was instrumental in their defeat. Fearless and without mercy he would soon earn a sinister reputation, that has followed him ever since. As the Liang forces invaded they successfully incited some recently conquered Luzhen tribes to rebel against the Wanyan, bringing a sizable cavalry force over to the Liang side, Šurgaqi invited the rebel leaders to meet him, ostensible to join them and betray Jingge by declaring himself khan, and a subject of the Liang. Šurgaqi feted the rebel leaders and their banner men, plying them with wine and women, then when they where drunk and had let their guard down Šurgaqi's troops fell upon them, slaughtering them to a man. Šurgaqi then led his troops to their territories and put to the torch their villages. The rebels soon abandoned the Liang and returned home to defend their own lands from the merciless warlord, only to find that little remained of their people. Rather than face the gruesome enemy many rebel clans chose to submit to Jingge Khan to be spared his brother's pitiless wrath.

Having dealt with the rebels Šurgaqi was free to turn his attention to the Liang. As commander of much of the Luzhen and most of the Yoghuz cavalry he played a critical role in the battles that drove the Liang back to their side of the wall. Often leading from the front he earned the loyalty of the troops under his command by his extreme fearlessness and personal courage. In one famous incident he was hit in his left eye by an arrow and rather than receive the medical care that may have saved the eye he insisting on remaining on the battlefield fighting on.

As the war dragged on however disagreements grew between Šurgaqi and Jingge Khan. Jingge Khan would often treat defeated enemies with lenience and welcomed defecting Liang generals. Šurgaqi would have none of it. Wherever Šurgaqi raised his black banner it signified to both his own men and the enemy that no quarters would be given nor received (Šurgaqi often executed his own soldiers for breaking either of these rules). After a promient Liang general surrendered a city and received a title and the hand in marriage of one of Jingge Khan's daughters Šurgaqi had had enough and went into self-imposed exile with his wife's Yoghuz tribe, from where in all likelihood he plotted to make himself khan of the Yorghuz in a possibly treasonous manner. Such a plot might have been easy enough to achieve since the Liang, despite their military ineptitude compared to the Wanyan banner army had nearly limitless manpower reserves and all attempts by Jingge to cross the Great Wall had failed. Nevertheless the Liang dynasty was exhausted and one of its regional governors overthrew the dynasty and seized control of the capital, establishing the Great Shan Dynasty to impose order on the Empire. As Emperor Yongcheng began to strengthen the empire Šurgaqi reconciled with his brother and agreed to help defeat the Shan. Some say it was the prospect that the dynamic and capable Yongcheng Emperor might restore a powerful Chu empire and bring the Luzhen and Yoghuz once again under Chu domination that inspired Šurgaqi to this action. Others have noted, that by a strange coincidence it was the Yongcheng emperor who was responsible for Šurgaqi when he was a hostage of the Liang empire.

In any event while Jingge Khan sought to invade the Shan from the Luzhen lands northeast of the Great Wall Šurgaqi and his Yoghuz army launched an invasion from the northwest. While this invasion was ongoing a former Liang general, Tian Xiaowen, hostile to Great Shan opened the gates of the Great Wall for Jingge Khan whose forces swept through the wall and rode on the Great Shan capital of Anjing. Not long thereafter Šurgaqi also entered the empire from the northwest. The particulars are unclear. Some say that troops under Tian Xiaowen opened the gates but others claim the Yoghuz broke through on their own. What is known is that Šurgaqi massacred a great number of Chu soldiers after getting through the walls, men either loyal to the Shan empire or soldiers who had pledged their allegiance to Jingge Khan and was betrayed by Šurgaqi after he threw into a rage upon learning that Jingge Khan was marching on Anjing with Tian Xiaowen. Šurgaqi led his troops in a rapid ride against Anjing but when he arrived he howled with fury. For above the city flew the banner of the Wanyan and yet the great capital of the Liang dynasty stood unharmed and its people unmolested. To Šurgaqi this was unbearable.

As a prince of the Yin Dynasty Prince Qing, despite spending most of his life at war has a large family, having fathered many children with several wives and concubines. His primary consort is the Yoghuz princess Lady Temülün. For a quarter of a century the pair has had a surprising harmonious relationship, with Lady Temülün being one of her spouse' closest confidants and a great help in building his relationship with the Yoghuz tribes. Prince Qing also has two secondary consorts, Lady Abahai of the Yehonala clan and Lady Subenzhu of the Nuharoo clan, both Luzhen noblewoman.

Primary Consort Yuan of the Borčïqïn clan, personal name Temülün (43)
