Currency Confusion

Postby Almighty Jim Justice » Mon Oct 14, 2024 10:23 pm

My nation’s currency is the coal mine, but this game reads the currency as “coal ours.” Wouldn’t the currency be referred to as “coal ores” instead of “ours?” Is this is either a bug in the game’s code or just something I’m overlooking? Thank you, and I hope to see this get fixed

There is indeed a context in which the plural of "mine" is "ours". This certainly isn't it, but still!

That is an absolutely amazing glitch, and I'm shocked it's not come up before (at least that I'm aware).

The game isn't trying to write "ores" - it's trying to pluralize "mine" and thinks that it's the possessive pronoun for something belonging to you, rather than the noun for a place something is extracted from the ground.

I didn't even know the pluralization script had that capability :-P I'll bring it up backstage.

Thank you for bringing it up backstage. As someone with experience in the coal industry, I’m hoping this will be resolved in a timely fashion

I made some changes to my nation to see how reproducible this bug is:
Seconds ago: Tinhampton changed its national animal to "tin mine", its currency to "what's yours is mine", and its demonym to "mine".
Lo and behold: "The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 17.357 billion ours hold their civil and political rights very dear" and "Billions of what's yours is ours are being blown on orbital weapons development." (But the newspaper still costs "1 WHAT'S YOURS IS MINE.")

And what happens if I change the demonym a bit?
Seconds ago: Tinhampton changed its national demonym to "worker at the local mine".
Then the World Census very helpfully informs me that "The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 17.357 billion worker at the local ours hold their civil and political rights very dear."

The correct pluralisation in the latter case is "workers at the local mine," not "worker at the local ours."

The pluralisation library we have is meant to cover the majority of options people are likely to select for custom fields. We have some hard-coded overrides for what we feel are sufficiently sensible cases that it fails to handle. But there will always be strange examples like the above that won't be catered to, because you've chosen a really weird option for your custom field.

We don't have that problem with our currency, which is tacos. Yours, mine, or ours.

To be fair, your nation's pretitle is "Oh My GOD! What were they thinking! He's not a MODERATOR!"

That's because he's not a Moderator anymore. He's the site director.

I’m implying that Sedgistan stated that my choice in currency was weird, but his own customizable fields are equally, if not more unorthodox

Weird doesn't equal bad. And yes, my pre-title doesn't display properly in some parts of the site, as a consequence of it being outside the ordinary.
