CIVIL WAR CONTINUES IN EGYPT
Image

The civil war that has been raging in Egypt between the forces of President Fattah el-Sisi and the Democratic Front of Egypt since February 2023 has intensified. The conflict was sparked after the government violently suppressed crowds protesting rising inflation and cuts in social welfare. The government controls most urban centers but Sinai and large parts of Upper Egypt are under rebel control. Some Western politicians have criticized the Democratic Front due to the inclusion of Islamists, some affiliated with extremist terrorist organizations like ISIS. Over 190,000 people have been killed so far in the conflict, sparking debate in Europe over possible intervention, especially as refugee flows to Europe have increased.

In the latest major battle, government forces have been attempting to retake the city of Aswan from the "terrorists" - as they have labeled the rebels. Much of the city has been leveled due to indiscriminate artillery and aerial bombardment, and now ground troops are attempting to clear the city from rebels, going from one block to the next. Over 40,000 people have been killed in the process, most of them civilians. NGOs are warning that conditions for civilians in the city are worsening and are requesting urgent humanitarian assistance. One of the commanders of the Democratic Front, Karim Seif, has asked "how can the civilized world sit back and let el-Sisi butcher the Egyptian people? We need assistance, now!"

TERRORIST ATTACK IN MADRID - OVER A HUNDRED DEAD
Image

Five assailants, with semi-automatic rifles, opened fire at a concert in the center of Madrid. Over a hundred people were killed before the police neutralized the terrorists. In a video, the Islamist terrorist group known as ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack on the "infidels". It warns of more attacks against both the "decadent" West and the "atheistic" Soviets. The terrorist attack has caused national mourning in Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for European countries to cooperate more closely against Islamic terrorism. He has also stated that there needs to be a military response against the militant group.

ISIS is operating in Mali, Afghanistan, Libya, and in Egypt. Some have claimed that ISIS militants have links with the Democratic Front in Egypt, though commanders of the Egyptian opposition have denied the claims and have condemned the terrorist attack. It remains to be seen what will be the effects of the terrorist attack. Some analysts believe it will galvanize European countries to launch military interventions in regions plagued with Islamist militias. Others warn the attack may aid the far right and increase nativist sentiment in European nations.

RECORD REFUGEE FLOWS INTO EUROPE
Image

Over 870,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean into Europe in 2023. Most of them have come from Egypt, though a substantial number also originate from Sub-Saharan Africa. The increased inflow of migrants and refugees has been causing a backlash in the continent, with far-right parties gaining ground in a lot of European nations. This has been exacerbated by the recent terrorist attack in Madrid, which has heightened fears over terrorist attacks on European soil. NGOs warn that the welcoming and integration of the migrants and refugees in most European countries has been inadequate, and have been calling for greater solidarity. This risks bringing electoral backlash though.

CLIMATE MARCHES ACROSS EUROPE, NORTH AMERICA
Image

In most European and North American cities, young people have organized climate marches to urge national leaders to take serious action in dealing with climate change. Alison, a student at the march in New York, stated: "Our leaders haven't made enough progress. The world is burning and we need drastic action, not half-hearted measures!". Others though have been viewing advocates of the "green agenda" as "alarmists" and "privileged". In many European and North American countries, there is backlash towards green policies and their impact on traditional industries and cost of living.

DOMESTIC NEWS

PRIME MINISTER PUSHES TAX REFORM BILL
Image

Prime Minister Kyriakos Kannelakis has pushed through the National Assembly a significant tax reform bill. The bill will lower the corporate tax from 29% to 21%, will offer tax credits of up to 50,000 drachmas to small businesses, will offer a one-year corporate tax holiday to small businesses and start-ups during their first year of operation, will make tips and overtime pay tax-free, will reduce Value-Added Tax (VAT) from 24% to 13%, and will cut income tax across the board for all income brackets by 5%. The bill was voted by all 278 MPs of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP).

"We promised to cut taxes," Prime Minister Kannelakis said, "and we did just that. We've made Yunnanistan an attractive destination for private investments. The bill will also support small businesses and start-ups, and the cuts in VAT and income taxes will stimulate consumer spending and alleviate the Yunnani people who for years have been suffering under the burden of extreme taxation imposed by the CSU. We're working for the hardworking people of this country who want to keep more of their hard-earned drachmas in their pockets."

The bill was voted against by the 122 MPs of the Christian Social Union (CSU). The interim leader of the right-wing party, Apostolos Gkletsos, has questioned the impact those tax cuts will have on public finance, especially since the government has already been running a deficit. "The Prime Minister in the election promised he would eliminate the deficit," Gkletsos said. "Now his party is pushing through massive tax cuts that will mainly benefit the rich and big corporations at the expense of the working class. How will the Prime Minister cut the deficit? By slashing vital social services and wrecking our welfare state, that's how! We will oppose him all the way."

CSU LEADERSHIP RACE - SALMAS FAVORITE IN EARLY POLL
Image

Marios Salmas, longtime CSU MP and former Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Stefanos Doukas, is leading the field of the leadership race in a newly published poll. Salmas was one of the few Ministers not implicated in the massive financial scandal that rocked the Doukas' administration and caused the government to collapse and led to the October 2023 victory of the PLP. He is extremely popular in the base of the party due to his welfare measures: he increased pensions for public sector employees (especially for doctors and teachers), instituted a 2000 drachmas per child baby bonus scheme, and increased benefits for low-income people. Salmas is also strongly socially conservative, taking a hardline stance against the liberalization of the abortion law, the legalization of marijuana, and against same-sex marriage. Salmas describes himself as a "social Christian" who believes in "solidarity", "social justice", and "traditional Christian morality".

Salmas wants the party to be a "populist" force in Yunnani politics, fighting for the "working class" against the "liberal cosmopolitan elites of the PLP". He's also floated some controversial ideas: the death penalty for drug dealers, charging women who undergo illegal abortions with manslaughter (with life imprisonment or even the death penalty), a wealth tax, increasing income tax for the highest income brackets, and creating a Minimum Guaranteed Income. "We need to be the party of social justice," Salmas said. "We also need to be the party of patriotism and Christian values."

Salmas is ahead at 48% in the latest poll, published by MEGA POLLS. Second comes Alexios Polakis, at 29%. Polakis belongs to the center-right wing of the CSU. He proposes reversing the PLP tax cuts, increasing investments in healthcare and education, more anti-poverty initiatives, and greater support for single mothers. He has also signaled support for civil unions for same-sex couples as an acceptable compromise. There are three more candidates in the race but they poll below 10%. It is expected that Salmas will be elected leader of the party, and this will result in increasing polarization.

WILL KANNELAKIS PUSH FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE?
OP-ED by Stefanos Chios
Image

Kyrakos Kannelakis and the PLP were elected because they promised the modernization and liberalization of Yunnanistan. The Prime Minister has made good on his promise by slashing taxes and making our country internationally competitive. Hardworking Yunnanis will be able to keep more of their hard-earned drachmas. However, economic liberalization is only one-half of the modernization project that the PLP has undertaken: the other half is social liberalization. The previous PLP administration of Dimitrios Gounaris focused exclusively on economic affairs, fearing that liberal social reforms would cause a backlash in this strongly Catholic country, and was unwilling to spend valuable political capital to push for social equality. Prime Minister Kannelakis must not make the same mistake.

As liberals, it is our duty to ensure that all citizens have the same rights. Right now, same-sex couples lack the legal protections and privileges afforded to heterosexual couples. That is a disgrace, and is something that needs to change regardless of what conservative priests and populist politicians are propagating. We need to be bold and push for social equality regardless of the political cost. According to rumors, the Prime Minister feels the same way, so there is hope that he won't repeat the mistake of his predecessor. Yes, if he pushes for same-sex marriage, there is a chance the CSU will see political benefits initially. However, I firmly believe that, as in other countries, the public will come to accept this progressive change and at the end of the day will reward the Prime Minister for his bravery.

THE LAURELS OF VICTORY

Image

Nobody would have expected that in the early years of the 1990s that the Soviet Union's largest rival in the United States, the core of the international capitalist world system, would collapse. By a stroke of luck, the Soviet Union was left as the most economically and militarily potent power in the world. It would have been easy for the USSR to rest on its laurels and be satisfied with outliving its rival but instead the leadership of the country found it impossible to ignore the terrific opportunity the end of the United States presented. The 1990s would see an increase in Soviet activity all over the world. While the Soviet Union continued its economic reforms internally it dispatched packages of aid and weapons to its allies everywhere. Much like a starfish the arms of international capitalism can survive the loss of the body and restore themselves if allowed to. To create a new international economic and political order built on countries following a socialist orientation rather than participation in financial capitalism required a new type of geopolitics and the Soviet Union move beyond its self-conception as a fortress in the world. Its enemies although greatly diminished were still strong and could still form a united front against it. To be able to claim a lasting victory in the Cold War would require the systematic breaking apart of the remaining enemies of socialism and humanity with the opening of a hundred new fronts against them in the economic, military, and political spheres. Even if peaceful relations are maintainable at the present there can be no illusions that the world could exist with two competing and fundamentally irreconcilable social systems.

THE CORRELATION OF FORCES

"A. A brief historical survey illustrates that the concept of the correlation of forces has frequently been utilized by the Soviet spokesmen since the Bolshevik Revolution. It is a general concept that is applied to numerous diverse situations in order to evaluate the balance between two forces or groups of forces in a conflict relationship. Moreover, the "correlation of forces" concept includes a wide range of factors, only one of which is military. Major shifts in the correlation of world forces are identified as having occurred in 1917, 1949, and 1969-1970.

B. The calculation of the correlation of forces takes into consideration numerous economic, military, political, and international factors. In speaking of the correlation of forces, Soviet spokesmen appear to differentiate two levels of analysis: (1) the general, worldwide level, and (2) a level of individual factors and/or regions. Assessment on the first level is essentially an intuitive process in which the correlation of forces is based upon a "feel" for world events. With respect to individual factors or geographic regions, analyses are made more systematically because of the far fewer elements to be assessed at a given moment. Therefore, whereas the overall correlation of world forces may intuitively show the trend of the international situation, a more specific calculation of individual factors (e.g., economic, military, etc.) or in a separate geographic region is needed in order to assist In the formulation of foreign policy actions."

- The Soviet Concept of the "Correlation of Forces", by Michael J. Deane, 1976

Soviet geo-strategic thinking in the 21st millennium is guided by the Soviet Union's long term goal to keep the powers of socialism ahead of the powers of Capitalism which has begun to recover since the collapse of the USA. Soviet strategists believe the correlation of forces remains firmly in favor of socialism around the world but they have shifted much as the capitalist states have stabilized and sought to salvage what remained of the American system of financial domination. The Chinese in particular represent the single greatest threat to world socialism and share the longest border of any two states in the world with the USSR. With China's meteoric rise to global prominence Soviet strategists must ensure that their adversaries are never in a position to make an alliance with it. To prevent that alliance the Soviet Union looks to keep a balance between itself, China, and Japan. If the Chinese have gained it has typically aided the Japanese. If the Japanese have gained, support has passed to the Chinese. As long as the two strongest powers centered in Asia must concern themselves with each other and do not want to risk alienating the Soviet Union and forcing it to the side of their enemies then the situation is stable. The formation of a global anti-communist alliance similar to that which precipitated the Second World War must never be allowed and to prevent it potential adversaries must be convinced to choose peaceful relations with the USSR or be made to understand that the costs of military competition are not something they can withstand.

The signing of the nuclear test ban treaty with Poland and other important nuclear states as well as agreements seeking to limit nuclear forces in Europe between the Soviet Union and NATO states like Germany has done a great deal to reduce the threat of war. The Soviet Union no longer follows its "maximum pressure" campaign against NATO that it did in the mid to late 1990s when the balance of power was most in the Soviet Union's favor. Instead the Soviet foreign ministry has sought to cultivate normal trade relations with European NATO and prevent the formation of a world anti-communist alliance by making it more desirable to trade with the USSR and its allies than join alliances against them. The Roman-Polish and Polish-Chinese military agreements are persistent problems for Soviet strategic planners and there is almost nothing more they would like in the modern era than the separation of the Roman Empire from NATO and NATO from China. Despite these troubling alliances against the USSR, the Soviet Union has had successes in its foreign policy especially in America where it has made agreements with the USA's successor states to support stability and greatly expand Soviet influence. Elsewhere around the world the Soviet Union still maintains close relations with its third world partners and supports anti-imperialist movements wherever they appear, especially in the Sahel region which has found an anti-imperialist coalition rise up against the French recently.

The International Bank for Trade (IBT) and International Accounting Unit (IAU)

Part economic necessity and part Soviet geo-strategy, the International Bank for Trade was established in 1992 as a replacement to the American controlled IMF. The IBT supported by the Soviet central bank and those of its allies is responsible for producing and managing a new type of global reserve currency. The International Accounting Unit, called the IAU or the Mebo after its Russian abbreviation, can be thought of as a combination of the proposed Bancor and the Soviet "clearing ruble" used to allow the nonconvertible Soviet ruble to be used for international trade with the USSR. It is not the national currency of any country but is instead supported by the foreign exchange reserves of the states involved with the International Bank for Trade. The Soviet central bank, Gosbank, in particular supports the IAU/Mebo as it would a national currency. The backing of the Mebo and its convertibility ensures its easy use as a store of value and conduit for international transactions. The Soviet Union conducts nearly all of its exports in Mebos as do its closest allies. The Mebo is kept at a consistent value and carefully controlled so not as to appreciate or depreciate relative to the national currencies it ties together. The more a state uses the Mebo the more it has influence over the policy of the International Bank for Trade that issues it, with seats on the board of that bank controlled by the states which support the Mebo with their foreign exchange reserves. The Soviet Union being the most important backer and user of the Mebo occupies most of those seats. The Mebo is also self reinforcing like other currencies and does not soley depend on the support of central banks or national governments. Anyone who receives the Mebo as payment must convert it into their national currency if they wish to spend it within their nation and not use it for further international transactions. Conversely, anyone who wants to spend Mebos must turn their national currency into Mebos by exchanging it. This means that the Mebo is upheld by the amount of transactions that occur with it like a normal currency in addition to the support of multiple central banks. It also means that the Mebo can circulate around the world as any other currency can and frequently reaches places outside of the Soviet Union. While the Euro, Yen, or other currencies may be more friendly to use in derivatives or other financial assets the Mebo is meant to support national development projects for which financial speculation is of no use.

Image
The Soviet 'International Investment Bank" (IIB) is a large player in Mebo denominated development loans to foreign countries. Established as part of COMECON, it has expanded beyond its original purpose.

Because of its unique characteristics as a sort of international clearing ruble the Mebo's value is extremely stable. Changes in its target value or money supply always occur with the input of the countries that trade in it and are almost always political decisions. Debt denominated in the Mebo usually takes the form of government bonds or long term development loans. While these loans are never at high interest rates and seldom come with strings attached like the IMF or World Bank once issued they encourage the use of the Mebo and mean that when a country finishes a project with Mebos, it is likely to use it to generate Mebos to repay the loan. In the past the IIB under the direction of the Soviet state has forgiven large amounts of debt both to help relations with foreign countries and to encourage more development and use of the Mebo. Every deal with a foreign state for development is also a deal the Europeans or Chinese do not make and another place wrenched free of capitalist financial control. The IIB is only one of the development banks that engage in this strategy. Commercial banks run by the national bourgeois frequently engage with the Mebo for international trade and are encouraged to do so. Outside the control of the International Bank for Trade where the Mebo cannot possibly be fully regulated they can even produce their own securities and derivatives denominated in the Mebo even if the IBT will not support them.

The Mebo's main rivals include the Euro, Yen, Yuan, and Roman Hyperpya. All backed by powerful economies, but none except potentially China as strong as the USSR individually. For the time being the Mebo system has not attained supremacy over the capitalist financial system of the world even as Soviet and allied economists work daily to move it down that path. The International Investment Bank works in cooperation with every other type of Mebo financial institution and is only one part of Moscow's multifaceted geo-strategy.

MY ADDRESS IS THE SOVIET UNION

A state with a varied population will have its people live lives that are just as varied. The Soviet Union is not an exception to this rule. Since the 1980s the USSR has undergone a number of economic and cultural changes but the underlying nature of Soviet society has remained the same. The great majority of people in the USSR live at a standard similar to Italy or Spain and other countries in Southern Europe. The most urbanized and wealthy parts of the Soviet Union approach the standards of western and northern Europe even though life is not directly comparable. The essentials for life in the Soviet Union are generally very cheap and rent for most people is an insignificant part of their income. The Soviet people enjoy an economy that does not generate unemployment or homelessness and has no room for crime yet that does not mean there are no problems. Soviet housing has always been criticized for its quality and quantity and although significant improvements have been made since the 1980s in both fields most Soviet citizens still have complaints. Consumer goods in the Soviet Union while more available than they were in the 1980s are also more expensive and frequently imported. The Soviet driver may not need to wait on a list to have his own car very long but he must now work more for the same car or a foreign, often Japanese, equivalent. He must also pay more for the best quality clothing which is also often imported. The Soviet Union is by no means helpless in light industry and in competition with foreign imports has been required to make significant progress in quality but compared to other parts of the economy it is not prioritized.

In the late 1980s Soviet economic reform created space for 'private' industry in certain sectors of the economy. This industry was in large part funded by state investment and allocated economic space in the country's five year plans but it meant that Soviet planners could outsource planning certain consumer goods industries to private citizens and also provide them a way up the social ladder that was not through the layers of the Communist Party or government bureaucracy. Influential Chinese-Soviet economist Deng Xiaoping argued for the use of a "socialist market" model for Soviet economic reform and several of his more important proposals were carried out by Gosplan, the USSR's economic planning authority, in the late 1980s and early 90s. When Chairman Kryuchkov died in 2003 and was replaced by Alexander Lukashenko as General Secretary of the CPSU and Chairman of the Presidium most of Kryuchkov's economic policies were continued although Lukashenko's experience in the management of farms in Belarus has informed his agricultural policy. The Soviet Union continues to prioritize heavy industrial and capital goods capability with an emphasis on high tech industry in recent years. In particular Gosplan would very much like to increase Soviet microprocessor chip production which is almost totally monopolized by the needs of the military.

The Soviet government has tried to produce a unique Soviet culture since the end of the cold war. While certain lessons were taken from western cultural products that could be let into the USSR after the end of the cold war against the United States Kryuchkov's hardline leadership maintained a ban on many western bands and television shows especially when they promoted values that were not in line with Soviet socialism. The cultural environment is not as restrictive as it was in the 1980s, but one would find it difficult to argue that culture ought to be regulated less to any high ranking Communist Party member. This is best reflected with the internet, which prior to 2006 was not as separated from the rest of the world and only had specific websites banned in the USSR. With the rise of information warfare and increasing cyber threats from the west the Soviet Union would create its own national internet which is largely sectioned off from the western world through blocking access to many more websites and services as well as introducing new laws to regulate access to content. Any website or internet based service that will agree to follow Soviet laws however can be unblocked, and Soviet internet users are not an uncommon sight on some foreign websites because of this. The Soviet Union supports its own domestic social media websites and its internet is much more open to allies in Europe and around the world. The policy of "internet sovereignty" is primary directed against foreign propaganda and NATO, Chinese, and Japanese cyber-warfare. Soviet citizens seeking to evade this restrictions frequently use VPNs to bypass them but are usually unaware of the KGB's control of all VPN providers in the USSR and surveillance of the content passing through them. They could go after everyone who is technically breaking the law but the vast majority of VPN use is ignored by the Soviet state and only those suspected of engaging in illegal activity or working with a foreign interest are pursued. Regulations also exist for online gaming and the practice of gambling in video games common in the west and Asia is totally outlawed in the USSR. The internet environment is reflective of the wider cultural environment in many ways although import of non-political media from the west is not usually regulated unless it comes from Poland. A rise in encrypted communication apps has been frustrating for Soviet authorities but as long as the Soviet state has the capability to recognize the users of such apps they are unlikely to be banned or regulated considering the many duties of the KGB and other Soviet security services that already exist.

The Soviet people might chafe against restrictions imposed by a government that is frequently heavy handed in its protection of what it believes to be the essential values of the Soviet Union, but Soviet cultural policy is not without its supporters especially among those who have been exposed to ridiculous concepts such as "reality television", "gacha games", or "J-pop" that are common in other countries. The primary view in the USSR is that it is the government's responsibility to regulate culture as it would regulate any other aspect of social life even if citizens might disagree with individual restrictions. Criticisms of these and other government policies are not uncommon in Soviet newspapers and the range of openly discussed issues and ideas has expanded since the 1990s. The average Soviet people have no issue criticizing government inefficiency or offering constructive criticism of the Soviet system but any attempts to attack the core principles of the USSR are not looked upon well and will not appear in any legitimate news outlet in the USSR. The goal being to protect the Soviet people from foreign propaganda, the government seldom looks to arrest individual anti-communists or other types of unwelcome dissident among the normal people and targets almost exclusively intellectuals and those who attempt to join or form anti-Soviet organizations. Nationalists are the most common targets of the government and the penalties for promoting regional nationalism or racism in the USSR were greatly increased after the September 11th attacks.

THE SIBERIAN RIVER REVERSAL PROJECT

Image
The Irtysh river in Siberia which Soviet engineers plan to divert south into Central Asia before 2030.

The Soviet Union despite being the largest state in the world cannot make use of the majority of its land. Siberia despite its wealth is in large part inimical to human life, and as if to spread its misery sends many of the greatest rivers in the USSR flowing north into the Arctic Sea making them economically impossible to exploit. Central Asia is starved of water by this quirk of geography and to address this imbalance has been a long term priority of the Soviet Government since the mid-1980s. If Central Asia could be made fertile and its depleting water resources replenished it would quickly become an engine for Soviet economic growth and permit a great expansion of agriculture across a formerly dry and lifeless expanse. To excavate canals and prepare ancient river beds for diverted rivers is a project that takes decades and consumes immense resources. Rail lines must be constructed specifically to support the work in the Siberian tundra. New towns to house workers must be established along the route of the project and to excavate in Siberia is an engineering challenge itself. When the great project began in the 1980s it was expected to take forty or fifty years to complete. In 2024 the most advanced sections are nearing completion and certain smaller canals such as the Pechora–Kama Canal that links the Pechora river in the Urals to a tributary of the Volga are in regular operation conveying water that was once dumped into the cold Arctic eventually into the Caspian Sea. The diversion of rivers must also be accompanied by the expansion of forests in central Asia and the creation of an environment capable of retaining and using the water. To turn the desert into forest or grassy plains would be a large project even if it did not depend on two and half thousand kilometers of canal.

The greatest engineering project in history is not without its costs. The total cost is estimated to be a staggering 110 billion Rubles and because of the immensity of the Siberian River Reversal program it has its own category on the Soviet budget. The environmental cost is similarly extraordinary. While some ecosystems may be obliterated, others will be created from nothing. The government has thus far remained dedicated to its massive project but as it nears its completion in 2030 and the first segments are activated protests and action by its opponents will only intensify. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet sees Siberian project as essential to the future of the USSR and its ability to economically compete with the Chinese in the future. Even as its longest projects near their end they draft more ambitious plans for the future.

SEPTEMBER ELEVENTH AND THE SOVIET WAR ON TERROR

Image
An apartment block damaged by the 2001 September 11th terror attacks against the USSR.

On the eleventh of September 2001 the Soviet Union was struck by four nearly simultaneous terror attacks. Jihadists detonated bombs in two Moscow apartment complexes, killing 310 people and injuring 1104 more. One other bombs were discovered in an apartment complex that failed to detonate later. Only hours later an Aeroflot flight from Grozny to Moscow was hijacked thirty minutes before it was intended to land at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. The aircraft was meant to be used against the Moscow Kremlin but due to the piloting skills of the hijackers instead impacted a city block two kilometers away, instantly killing all 247 people aboard the aircraft and a further 64 on the ground with 650 injuries. An order to ground all commercial flights in the USSR was implemented immediately afterwards and resulted in the discovery of a second hijacked aircraft flying the route between Almaty and Leningrad that had been intended to land in Leningrad at nearly the same time as the Moscow flight but had been delayed. Investigations uncovered how the hijacking was executed early as soon as the pilot informed the passengers that they would be diverting to the closest airport to land following the Moscow attacks. The second flight was intercepted by the Soviet Air Defense force and shot down by an interceptor aircraft when it continued its course towards Leningrad and refused to land at a military airbase resulting in the deaths of the 60 passengers. The last attack of the 11th also targeted Leningrad and targeted a train on the Moscow-Leningrad express. The bomb, hidden in luggage, was timed to explode minutes after the train pulled into the station. It killed a further 50 people and injured 310. In total 731 deaths occurred as a result of the attacks and injured 2064.

Fourteen foreign nationals, mostly from Europe, were also killed in the aircraft attacks. The reaction to September 11th from Chairman of the Presidium and General Secretary of the CPSU Vladimir Kryuchkov was immediate. Addressing the Soviet public and much of the world by television the night of the attacks he gave the first figures for the deaths and injured (that would later be revised upwards) and announced the implementation of additional security measures at Soviet train stations and airports as well as promising a "quick and aggressive" response to the perpetrators of the attacks. The next day the KGB announced that it believed Chechen and Dagestani militants linked to the Afghan "Al-Qaeda" group were responsible for the attacks. The weeks after 9/11 were marked by Soviet special forces and police raids on suspected Jihadist cells operating in the USSR. Five Soviet Alpha group soldiers and 37 Al-Qaeda or Chechen "Caucasian Front" Jihadists were killed in the raids. Soviet television would go on to display captured weapons and bomb making equipment.

Following the end of the Soviet-Afghan war in 1993, the Mujahideen and Soviet backed Afghan government had entered a cease fire. When fighting began again in 1997 after the cease fire broke down the group leading the fighting against the Afghan government called itself the Taliban. Al-Qaeda was an ally of the Taliban and contributed to the 1997 resumption of fighting and had also been responsible for a number of terrorist incidents targeting Soviet embassies and an apartment bombing in 1999. The 2001 9/11 attacks however caused the USSR, which had previously been disengaged from the fighting, to enter Afghanistan again. In early 2002 the Soviet Union once again invaded in support of the Afghan government. In a February 5th raid near the Baluchi border Soviet special forces nearly killed the leader of Al-Qaeda and the principle planner of the 9/11 attacks Osama bin Laden, finding that they attacked the village he was staying in only forty minutes after he had left and entered Baluchistan.

The Soviet Union would make several efforts to cooperate with the government of Baluchistan against terrorism until in 2011 it violated Baluchi territory to launch a raid against Bin Laden's suspected residence. Soviet helicopters penetrated Baluchi airspace and were able to deploy the KGB's "Alpha" group. One helicopter crash landed against a wall and required the scrambling of another helicopter to pick up the half of the Soviet special operations team. Soviet jamming prevented Baluchi air force interception of the retreating helicopters which contained prisoners, documents, and electronic devices taken during the raid.

Soviet involvement around the world against Al-Qaeda and its backers continues to this day. The Soviet Union has sought to diplomatically isolate Baluchistan, Saudi Arabia, and other states which have provided support to anti-soviet terrorism or the Jihadist movement in general.

Theories about surviving elements of the American CIA being involved with the planning and support of the attacks based on several connections between Al-Qaeda and American individuals known to have been associated with the CIA are popular in the USSR, but have been denied by the Soviet government despite a number of former KGB officers alleging that Kryuchkov himself believed they had merit.

NORTHERN LIGHTS TV

It's 19:00 on the "Lights News" program, we're talking about events and personalities. And today we'll talk about the upcoming elections. As always, your favorite, Karl Lahnes, is in our studio. Our guest is Frederik Jochins, a Danish doctor of political science. Frederik, what do you think are the Moderate Party's chances of winning and is it itself striving for victory?
Frederik (F): The election of Olaf Kroynberg as the party's leader already suggests that the Moderates are ready to let Helge Wolof from the Christian Party, who, according to our calculations, should lead the electoral coalition, miss this round. Because it's unlikely that a coalition around the Moderates will gain more than 40% in these elections, and the left opposition could seriously complicate the situation in the Union State of Nordland.
Karl (K): We are all following the situation in Madrid, the terrorist attack that took more than a hundred lives, how do you think it will affect the elections?
F: Well, even with the massive movement of refugees, the rating of ultra-right politicians around the Northern Way party, especially after the scandalous statement of the party leader Hans Sven: "Muslims are a bone in the throat of any Christian society, and if they do not accept our values, then let these smoked ones go to Egypt." Despite Sven's official public explanations and journalists' accusations that the phrase was taken out of context, the mood in society began to change from tolerant to radically hateful. Therefore, in some radical youth, this statement was a new revelation and he would quickly gain 9% according to the polls, for the first time in history, but I think this picture is a little biased. In fact, his party only united the Core, and did not grow with additional voters. Although threats of propaganda from the lips of such politicians remain.
K: What are the chances that after the elections we will abandon neutrality in favor of very ambitious Soviet economic projects
F: depends largely on the results of the elections. If the opposition around the Laborites can hold on to the big Center coalition, then instead of a neutral state we will get a Soviet Republic. If healthy forces win, then the policy of neutrality will continue for some time
K: For how long?

F: I suppose, until the creation of the Nordic army. And the escalation of the terrorist war could become a trump card in the pocket of the head of the coordination center, Haakon Kristin. It is quite possible that we will soon see more active participation of Scandinavia in foreign policy.

Thank you, we had Danish political scientist Frederik Johins in our studio, see you again on Saturdays at 19:00

Basilea ton Rhomanion

Grand Palace, Konstantinopolis, January 1 2024

Sometimes, the system of Executive Monarchy allowed for quick decisions; Empress Theodora IV Kastellanos was humble enough to know that not all such decisions were necessarily the right ones.

The ninety-year-old paced the corridors of the Grand Palace, pondering how her long reign - One of the longest in Human History - had seen so much change. Wearing an opaque silk-and-cotton gown, one specifically crafted to keep her warm in her insomniac walks, the Empress remembered her father, Emperor Pavlos, telling her that she had to learn the languages of her Empire because otherwise, she would not be able to convince the various peoples in it that Rhomanion was God's gift to them, that they can work together for mutual prosperity.

She had learned, and that knowledge had helped her understand the need for deep, fundamental reforms, reforms that would cut into the remaining powers of the Executive Monarchy and the reserves of political capital the Imperial Family had. But the alternative was to ignore the power that the suppressed aspirations of the Empire's nationalities had, and more importantly, the usefulness of the skillsets provided by the different cultures of those nations.

The Federal Arrangement of the Empire, the programs of re-democratization, the rediscovery of the more ancient portions of Roman Law - Her nation's laws and heritage - And the accommodation of modernizing political reforms that were nevertheless grounded in the language of ancient tradition, all these had taken place under her watch, allowing the Empire to last, to strengthen itself, to stay relevant. But for how much longer? The Empire had become a monarchy longer than it had been a Republic; can it really survive such a transition?

And more to the point, would a new Republic survive the centrifugal forces that pulled it in the direction of an ethnostate, a country governed by one race and culture instead of common citizenship and rights?

She had to make one more decision before the Executive Monarchy collapsed with her; her children were highly trained and educated to survive in this world of global connections and institutions, but they had very little prestige and name recognition in Roman territory itself - That was by design, to make sure that they cannot hobble the New Republic she had planned. Only a few of her children - Including her oldest, now dead from a life of alcoholism - had seen through that plan, just enough for her to refine it. How she missed them!

Continuing to pace the halls, watched over by loyal Varangians, Empress Theodora decided to stake her prestige and credibility on one more decision.

Senate and Assembly Building, Konstantinopolis

The Abrahamic Unity Party demanded that Greek speakers from the Middle East, regardless of sectarian or religious affiliation, be given a fast track to citizenship; this was acceptable. The Gaeans were asking for tree-planting projects and a lignite coal mining project in the Serbian territories to stop; unlike before, they had the support of the Serbian Youth plus the locals whose way of life would be disrupted by the coal mine - This was an easy way to gain the favor of the 'climate marchers' without serious economic changes. As for the Christian Progressives, they were asking for her answer to the 'Egyptian Question' - She could already tell they wouldn't like her answer.

Standing up from the throne from where she still presided over the Legislature, the Empress, feeling the weight of almost a century, spoke, relying on an installed microphone in her diadem to amplify her voice.

"I do not believe that the Democratic Opposition in Egypt is affiliated with the so-called Islamic State. I do not believe they had anything to do with the tragedy in Madrid. However, if we let the Egyptian Regime slaughter their people, we will be driving them to the arms of those who are terrorists, and increasing the flow of refugees into our lands. I have given up the power to propose laws to this august body, but not the power to act according to existing rulings and powers the Executive still has. Thus, the first legislator to propose an arms embargo on the Egyptian Regime will have my endorsement, and the first one to approve a 'fact-finding commission' to investigate and confirm the Democratic Opposition's innocence will have my approval; the slaughter must stop."

She then continued, "We will not have the remaining moral clout and standing of our civilization be further compromised by complicity in this massive humanitarian crisis - That is my final word in this matter."

The eruption of the uproar that came after could be compared to Mount Etna; the Empress could already feel her credibility and power bleed away. But she will stand her ground for what she believed in; had she not accepted that others had that same right?

At least the Abrahamic Unity Party approved, and heavily at that - She was going to use that favor they would feel they owe her to make sure they do not oppose the referendum on same-sex marriage scheduled later this year...

Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs Condemns Islamic Terror Attack on Spain, Security Forces on Alert:

Paris, January 5th - The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has released a statement condemning the terror attack claimed by ISIS on a concert in Madrid, where over a hundred people were killed before the five assailants were neutralized by police. In the statement the Foreign Ministry pledged solidarity with Spain, offering to assist in the investigation of the attack. Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna vowed a combined NATO response, telling members of the media at a press conference, "We will coordinate closely with the Spanish government and our NATO allies to respond to this horrific attack on innocent civilians. Our intelligence services are currently investigating the origins of the attack, and looking into the possibility of further attacks. At the moment, the assessment of our intelligence is that there is minimal risk of an imminent attack on French soil, however copycat attacks cannot be ruled out."

Across France, local security forces have been placed on heightened alert, with the National Police and National Gendarmerie deploying additional assets in cities and strategic locations around France. President Macron and Prime Minister Borne are reportedly considering also calling up elements of the National Guard, as the security situation changes.

Several French Assembly members were quick to cast blame for the attacks on the rise of Islamic terror in the Sahel region of Africa, which in recent years has seen numerous pro-Soviet coups against local governments in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Leader of the far-right National Rally party Marine Le Pen called on the Borne administration to take a firm stance against the new military juntas in the Sahel, warning, "The instability caused by Soviet-backed military regimes in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger has left the Sahel region a breeding ground for Islamic terrorist groups. The weak administration has pulled French troops out of the Sahel, leaving France vulnerable while ISIS is given a safe haven to plot their attacks. France must act decisively to restore democracy in the Sahel region and crush the ISIS threat."

Madrid Attack and Soaring Immigrant Encounters Boosts Support for Hardline Immigration Bill:

Paris, January 6th - The controversial immigration bill passed late last year has received a fresh wave of support in recent weeks as the number of immigrants coming into Europe has soared, and in the wake of the Madrid terrorist attack. These recent events have let up some of the pressure on the Borne government, as opposition to the hardline bill is said to be declining, with political experts expecting the administration to weather the crisis.

In the past few weeks, it had been rumored that President Macron planned to call snap elections and request Borne's resignation, which may be held off owing to recent events.

Ministry of Armed Forces Announces Carrier Deployment:

Paris, January 6th - A spokesperson for the Armed Forces Ministry has announced that the Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group is now headed for the coast of Algeria from an undisclosed location in the Mediterranean in preparation for a coalition response to the threat posed by Islamic terror groups in Libya, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

The spokesperson for the ministry stated that NATO would respond, "at a time and place of its choosing." The spokesperson continued to state that "France stands unified with NATO against any threats, whether it be state or non-state actors. We are in close cooperation with our local allies, and will initiate retaliatory strikes when the time is right. It is not a matter of if, but when."

President Macron sat alongside several ministers and advisors as they mulled France's approach to recent events. At home, protests and opposition to the new immigration bill was beginning to subside, as new worries of the recent terror attack and ever increasing migrant flows were beginning to take hold. Now, fresh on everyone's mind was the decline of French influence in the Sahel, and the security void it had left, most recently seen with the Nigerien expulsion of French diplomats and military forces last month.

"We need to rethink our approach to the recent coups that have been springing up in our former colonies." began Foreign Minister Colonna. "Clearly our 'wait and see,' approach isn't working - instead it is making things worse. New military juntas are continuing to pop up left and right, and we have just been letting it happen. Not only is this harming our relations, strengthening the Soviets, and emboldening others to follow suit, it is leaving a security void that local militaries, intelligence services, and police forces are unable to fill. We ended Operation Barkhane, not on a victory, but because the new Malian government demanded we withdraw. We are now in a difficult position to resume our fight against Islamic terror, but in an equally difficult position if we don't."

There were nods around the room. "Well, what do you propose that we do?" asked one of the senior foreign policy advisors. "The new governments would never allow us to redeploy our forces into the region, let alone use their airspace to launch strikes against the insurgents... Unless you are to suggest that we pursue regime change, there isn't much that we can do."

As he listened carefully, President Macron turned to his military chiefs. "And your opinion on the matter?"

"Regime change would be favorable, although the defense pacts the three juntas have concluded would complicate any direct action. Either way, the optics of France launching an unilateral military intervention against three of its former colonies would be... in poor taste." replied Air and Space Force Chief, General Jérôme Bellanger. "I believe it would be best for our NATO response to the terror attack on Spain, to be carried out utilizing Algerian airspace for strikes against ISIS positions in Mali and Libya. That way we do not have jets flying through their airspace, possibly provoking a reaction, and instead we can launch missiles from outside of their borders."

Chief of Defense Staff, General François Lecointre nodded. "I believe our best option for pursuing our own objectives will be utilizing covert means to stage a coup against the military junta to reinstall the democratically elected President in Niger, and following up from there. I am aware of DGSE plans to conduct such an operation using private military contractors, which would be favorable for deniability. Of course, we do face some obstacles, the most worrying being Soviet backing for the juntas, but I believe the Soviets will limit their involvement given more pressing matters closer to home."

"I would like to see those plans on my desk by tomorrow morning." said President Macron. "Now, about your proposal for sending support to Egypt..."

Geopolitics Journal.
suddenly on 19 January Haakon Christian convened a coordination council on the wave of a tense situation with terrorism, as a result of which a decision was made on "national anti-terrorist cooperation". apparently the "Special Corps of Internal Security" will be strengthened and a new structure "international rapid response group for the prevention of terrorism" will be created. Apparently this is another step towards the creation of a full-fledged army of the union state of Norland. Also on 21 January Haakon flew on a visit to the USSR. Haakon often went to Moscow and Berlin, trying to maneuver on interests. However, many analysts now note that the meeting between Haakon and Lukashenko was unusually long, and as a result, at a press conference, Haakon Kan announced that, together with the USSR, Nordland will create an organization to control the pricing policy for the sale of strategic raw materials in order to avoid the oil crisis of the 70s. However, in general, judging by the reaction of both sides, the negotiations were not very successful. Let us recall that elections are underway now, if the ruling coalition is going to bet on Germany and Poland, then the opposition around the Laborites, on the contrary, declares the need for friendship with the USSR. Whoever wins, Nordland will lose its neutral status and Haakon will have to build his own geopolitical course.

Izvestia - Reports of Soviets of Peoples' Deputies of the USSR

NEW DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT MADRID ATTACK, SOVIET UNION WANTS GLOBAL ANTI-TERROR COOPERATION

The Madrid concert attack that threw the Spanish capital city into chaos was according to authorities there executed with a number of semi-automatic rifles that Soviet experts who were reached for comment believe could have been smuggled into the concert hall disassembled in regular backpacks and then assembled inside the concert hall. The Soviet Ministry of Defense believes that the attack must have made use of detailed information about security at the concert and that the terrorists must have known that their bags would not have been searched or had another way to get through security. While speculation continues about the methods of the terror attack the Soviet government has condemned it with the rest of the international community and Chairman Lukashenko has offered his condolences to the families of the victims as well as the Spanish people through a letter to Prime Minister Sanchez. In a statement released this morning his office has reiterated the Soviet commitment to fight terrorism wherever it appears in whatever way it can. The reactionary and criminal war terrorism wages against humanity is fought most prominently today in Egypt and the Sahel region of Africa, in particular by our allies in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. While the Soviet Union has always been supportive of a unified front against terrorism it has found it difficult to secure the cooperation of western states. In the Sahel for example the French have refused to recognize governments which decided to assert their sovereignty and expel French troops and neocolonial interests from their territory, instead choosing to undermine them even as they lead the fight in Africa against terrorist criminality. It is certainly the case that France was willing to fight ISIS and organizations like it - but only when their economic interests were under threat, namely the exploitative neocolonial relationship that is in large part responsible for the underdevelopment that allows groups like ISIS to exist in the first place. It should not be forgotten that Al-Qaeda and all its associated or descendant organizations including the so-called Islamic state sprung from the American effort to undermine the socialist Afghan government and wage war against it during the 1980s. Consistently it has been the case that western governments who claim to oppose terrorism in reality have supported it by opposing strong and sovereign governments in the third world which are the only force capable of winning the war on terror or by supporting outright Jihadists against them. French reactionary politician Marine Le Pen is a well known example of this who calls for war against the anti-imperialist Sahel states while at the same time insisting that what they actually mean is war against ISIS or "instability" in general. One must question how attacking the only effective forces fighting ISIS would constitute attacking it rather than aiding it.

OUR RELATIONS WITH NORDLAND AND OTHER "NEUTRAL" STATES

Nordland has for a long time pursued a policy of neutrality between the Soviet Union and the NATO imperialist alliance. After a meeting on the 21st which was considered less productive than hoped some Soviet observers have questioned what neutrality actually means in the context of modern European politics. While both the USSR and Nordland agreed that coordination on energy prices and other important resources was essential for international economic stability and our national interests the agreement was not as close as the Soviet Union would have hoped. Would it be the case, as is commonly believed in Nordland and elsewhere, that economic or development agreements with the USSR would cause a state to drift away from neutrality? Our answer to this must be a resounding no. The Soviet Union has sought to separate its international economic projects from its security policy and has reiterated that anyone is welcome to join its development projects. The USSR for example carried out high amounts of trade with both China and Japan while it maintained a security balance between the two and favored neither. We also carry out trade - to the best of our ability - with Poland and Germany despite their membership in the NATO imperialist alliance and nobody would say that we are pro-NATO or that either Poland and Germany are pro-Soviet. The misrepresentation of Soviet foreign policy as something which is directed at bringing smaller states into the Soviet orbit or otherwise turning economic relations into chains that bind small states to larger states is far closer to typical Western economic strategy. All Soviet economic relations with foreign states both in direct investments and through the International Investment Bank and other development institutions are totally voluntary and unlike the IMF and World Bank which the western world maintained as the primary international "development" lenders never come with conditions that degrade a nation's sovereignty or force them to adopt economic policy that benefits foreigners rather than the people of that country. Trade with foreign states is simply business, and will only lead to closer ties with the USSR if a state chooses that path.

OPERATION SANDSTORM - January 5th 2024

The Kazakh sun this time of year was was cool, but the air was always dry. It had a way of sucking the moisture from the drilling soldiers. Two men observed them from a watch tower. Again and again the soldiers would get in their BMPs to attack the simulated town, driving up and dismounting before trying to clear out the town of enemies. Simulated gunfire from weapons loaded with training ammunition came in scattered bursts. At a distance it almost sounded like noise some swarm of insects would produce. After each attack the defenders and attackers would be brought together and the vehicles driven back into their places before a number of instructors - all wearing the patches of Soviet special forces units - who went though the simulated battle. Then they’d switch places and do it all again. Attacking, defending, and then attacking again.

The two men watched this routine with great interest. Sometimes one of them would take notes, other times they would just watch. One leaned against the railing while the other always stood with binoculars staring at the soldiers. Both wore the field uniforms of the KGB, although the leaning man kept his jacket open.

The more relaxed one interrupted the distant noise of training. “Do you think they’re any good, Ivan?”

Ivan lowered his binoculars and turned to his relaxed comrade. “What do you mean “any good”? Do you think “any good” is good enough for Egypt, Sergei?”

Sergei shrugged. “I think they’re as good as they’re going to get within a reasonable time frame. Experience teaches what training can’t.”

Ivan put the binoculars up to his eyes again. “If they survive.”

Sergei chuckled. “The special forces guys only have to yell at them a little now.”

Ivan didn’t respond. Sergei looked at him and examined the tension that defined his comrade’s face. He tried to reassure Ivan.

“Sandstorm will go well. These men are a cut above the average jihadist nut or government conscript. By the time the first few thousand are off the boats the next few thousand will be on the way.”

Ivan snapped back. “I know that. But you're not taking this seriously enough. Other countries have their own similar operations planned no doubt."

Sergei regarded the men training. They were exchanging simulated gunfire with each other in the mock town. "I would be surprised if the French or Germans send an army of Egyptians back to Egypt. They seem to want to keep their Egyptians for cheap labor." he said.

"An army is not just soldiers. It is a logistics and support system following them. You were responsible for arranging that."

Sergei nodded. "I was. I spoke to Dronov in the air force and a few of the army generals involved. We are staging supplies and repair depots in allied countries nearby and have medical support established as well. Everything has been worked out. In a few months our little rifle regiment here will be a force in Egypt. They might even win."

Ivan once again lowered the binoculars and sighed. "Might win?" he asked.

Sergei nodded. "There are no certainties in this business. We are already preparing as well as we can." the relaxed KGB officer answered.

Ivan thought they might be right. "Maybe I worry too much." he admitted, letting himself rest against the railing of the watch tower with his friend.

NORTHERN LIGHTS TV.
19:00 in the program "Lights News", we talk about events and personalities. And today we have a topic of discussion on humanitarian assistance to the Norland Commonwealth in Egypt. As always, your favorite is Carl Lanes(K) in our studio. Our guest is Helga Hafner (X), a member of the charitable organization "hope" at the Christian Party. I wanted to discuss the election campaign first, as it is now disturbing the residents of Norland. According to a survey by our channel, 46% are ready to vote for your "big centrist coalition", 48% for the "opposition bloc". Is the appeal of the bloc's parties "the whole world to help the hungry of Egypt" connected with an act of populism before the elections? Or was it an act of sincere sympathy for the people's misfortune
H: Well, think about it, people are dying in Egypt because of the next political showdown, they need medicines, food, children's things. Our Coptic co-religionists are suffering because of the radicals who wanted to build an Islamic utopia. As a neutral country, we must be a bulwark of hope, the vanguard of peacekeeping, this is the first step towards saving our souls.
K: On the issue of neutrality, the leader of the Northern Way party, Hans Sven, announced the preparation of the military fleet to be sent to the coast of Egypt to launch missile strikes, excuse me, I quote, on the positions of "sooty Islamists". How do you feel about this formulation, and is it true that you want to carry out a military operation against terrorism together with NATO?
X: It should be understood that not only we are conducting our own election campaign, Sven's election campaign is aimed at verbal escalation and scandalousness. We do not support such statements, but they are on Sven's conscience. Regarding the missile strike, this is an attempt to pass off what is really desired, the fleet of trade route guards is really going to the Suez Canal, but in the form of patrol ships. To attract another force, the Union State does not have a unified army and navy, and it prevents the doctrine of neutrality from taking a certain position.
K: The Labour Party has repeatedly stated that when you come to power you will abolish the doctrine of neutrality for joining NATO and selling off all Norland property to Germany
X: We cannot cancel it, the Coordination Center is engaged in this, we can only propose to soften the doctrine, and we are going to do this, since the current doctrine ties our hands about economic agreements that we can conclude without violating the terms of the doctrine. This also slows down privatization within the country, which looks much more difficult than "selling everything to a certain country." Our best economists are working on the privatization plan.
Q: Will relations with the USSR continue after your coalition comes to power?
X: It largely depends on the foreign policy of the USSR itself, because we have no plans to break off relations
K: Returning to the original topic, what is the ultimate goal of Norland's humanitarian mission?
X: First of all, to secure the Suez Canal in order to avoid a new economic crisis, to stop the humanitarian collapse of the war, in the future our goal is to negotiate with all parties to the conflict in order to conclude peace.
Thank you, Helga Hafner, a Nordland politician, member of the Christian Party and leader of the Hope Foundation, was in our studio, see you again on Saturdays at 19:00

January 5: Ebugu, Ebugu Capital Territory, Republic of Biafra

Goodluck Nanah Opiah, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Biafra, stared down Peter Obi.

He was not an intimidating man. He stood at 5'11" but had an uneven, bent posture, smiling with a gap between his two front teeth. In any case, however, Peter Obi was going to be the President of the Republic of Biafra in roughly 3 minutes. The first open Marxist taking the reigns in Biafra's history: and hopefully, Goodluck thought to himself, the last. He reluctantly shook Obi's hand: his grip was strong, almost overbearingly so.

"Good morning, Mr. President-Elect."

"Good morning, Mr. Chief Justice."

"Are you prepared to take the oath of office?"

"Indeed, I am."

"Then let's get started," Goodluck said with a forced smile. Obi put his left hand on the Constitution of Biafra and raised his right, Goodluck mirroring his motions. "I, Peter Gregory Obi..."

"...I, Peter Gregory Obi..."

"...humbly and solemnly swear on my honor as a Biafran..."

"...humbly and solemnly swear on my honor as a Biafran..."

"...that as President of the Republic, I shall defend, uphold, and maintain the Constitution of the Republic of Biafra."

"...that as President of the Republic, I shall defend, uphold, and maintain the Constitution of the Republic of Biafra."

Goodluck shook Obi's hand again.

"Good luck, Mr. President."

"Good luck, Goodluck," Obi joked. Goodluck smiled at the same joke he had heard 100 times in his life. "I put my trust in you, Mr. Chief Justice."

"Thank you, Mr. President. You may now give your inaugural address."

"Thank you." Peter Obi cleared his throat and stood up at to the podium. Here we go.

Image

"Fellow Biafrans!

"I bid you fraternal greetings! Just a few short months ago, you elected me to be the next President of our beloved republic. Before any other matters can be addressed, I would like to humbly and truly thank you for putting your faith in me. It is you, the people of Biafra, who make up its heart and soul. Just four years ago, I never believed I would have held this office. But you have made a dream a reality; not just my dream, but the dream of Biafra as a nation. We will march forward into the future, united as one people. At the same time, however, we must take into account the many, many Biafrans who are embittered, resigned. To them, I say: I will do my utmost best to prove to you, as your President and your friend, that I am worthy of the position that you have graciously given to me.

"Our national wealth, both cash and oil, are of concern to you, the Biafran people. How will we utilize these resources in an ever-changing world? I pledge to you, the people, that the resources we have shall be committed to three things: the national livelihood, the diversification of a stagnant economy, and the construction of a new capital city. Already, we see the effects of all three of these issues: I will not give them to you gently. The Biafran life is one of malaise; people gather in lines for bread, employment is left rare and uncertain, and we can see the remnants of this city's role as our capital in bullet holes and artillery craters.

"Biafra is in desperate need of reconstruction and movement towards the future. That is what I promise you! As a nation and a people, we cannot lose hope nor give up! These problems are not insurmountable! Biafra has faced worse and come out stronger. Our future as a country is one of mobility; I promise you, the Biafran people, that our administration will not only lead Biafra into the future but also make it a shining example of the future in Africa. I promise you this! I cannot re-iterate that enough. A production-centered economy; the movement of Biafra from oil-based production into the Fourth Industrial Revolution; the creation of a new capital alongside the consolidation of human development and basic rights; and a foreign policy centered on world partnership. These are my goals and my mission: and I have trust in you, the Biafran people, that we can make those goals a reality and lead Biafra into a future of development, socialism, and vitality!"

The crowd cheered, and Peter Obi couldn't help but smile seeing something he hadn't seen in a long time.

Hope.

"Direct involvement in Egyptian affairs is out of the question." Peter Obi knew when to put his foot down, even if the new Minister of National Defense, Luke Chijiuba Ochulor, didn't agree with it. The former Air Commodore clicked his pen in and out. "We have far too much to focus on when it comes to domestic issues. The development of the nation, the relationship with Nigeria..."

"...the war in Benin and the Sahel," Ochulor pointed out. At least he could sway the government in this direction. Obi nodded. "After the attack on Paris, the world wants a stronger response to terrorism coming out of that region. Including France."

"France." Obi spit out the word like it was a poison: he had not shied away from his distaste for foreign affairs in Biafra, save Soviet ones. France, to the eyes of the OnRo party at large, was the arch-imperialist. Obi sighed. "As much as it hates me to say it, we may have to work with them here."

"I agree. We should also commit to cooperation with other countries in the region friendly to the Soviet Union. Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger. Those are the big three power players. If they would accept our military expertise, then we could both win decisive victories against Islamist terrorism and win goodwill with the international community." Ochulor leaned back in his chair and raised his hand, twiddling with the pen in his fingers. "It's a win-win."

"I agree. Call up the Nigerien ambassador. See if we can't wrangle a meeting with those three." Obi tapped on the table. "I believe that's our meeting, then. Do you have any other concerns, Minister?"

"No, Mr. President. Have a good afternoon."

"You as well."

Ochulor left the President's office and prepared a phone call to the Foreign Affairs Office. He had a mission.

President Obi Announces Plans for Expanding Wind, Uranium Industries

The Obi government has announced that its first main goal of economic diversification, which some have begun to call the Obi Plan, will be the expansion of the wind electricity industry and uranium mining for export. Both industries have been supported by previous government, but the Obi government has publicly invested more money into state-owned companies that specialize in both industries, particularly Port Harcourt Wind and Biafra Uranium.

Environmentalists have been mixed on the proposal, supporting Obi's plans for the expansion of wind electricity but feeling lukewarm at best on his proposals to expand uranium mining operations. The government has defended their plans for uranium expansion by stating that they will be undertaken in coordination with private companies and labor unions to both protect workers from potential radioactive consequences as well as environmentalist organizations to protect local environments near and within mines.

Chapter 1: A New Sun

Nanjing,
The Republic of China
January 1, 2024

The air outside in the national capital was unusually warm for January, coming in at 55 degrees Fahrenheit as the noon hour closed in. Still a bit crisp, but warm enough that President-Elect Zhang Zhong only required a simple coat jacket and nothing heavier. His public relations staff loved this as they believes it would help to convert his youth and vigor, Zhang was just happy because he would be more comfortable as the day progressed.

Already, the day had started early with a morning Church service before going to the Presidential compound where he and his wife met with the outgoing President and First Lady over a nice breakfast. From there, the group had been brought to the central square where the actual inauguration ceremony would be held. At exactly noon, Zhang would say the oath of office and officially become the POTROC (President of the Republic of China). A thought that fille dZhang with a mixture of fear, awe, anticipation, and anxiety.

Snapping back to reality, Zhang smiled as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court made his way to the dias and motioned for him to step forward. Doing so, Zhang said a silent prayer before standing with one hand on the Bible and Constitution and the other raised up into the air. Soon, the words flowed out just as he had practiced. "I, Zhang Zhong, solemnly swear before the people of the Republic of China and before Heaven and Earth, to uphold and defend the Constitution of the Republic of China, to faithfully execute the duties of the office of President, and to serve the people with integrity, wisdom, and dedication.

I will protect the sovereignty, independence, and unity of our great nation. I will promote the welfare and prosperity of all citizens and safeguard their rights and freedoms. I will strive for peace and justice both at home and abroad, and work tirelessly for the betterment of our Republic.

Under the guidance of the Three Principles of the People, I pledge to strengthen our democracy, secure our national future, and uphold the honor of this office. So help me God."

With those last few words, Zhang smiled as artillery fired blanks and the band started into the Presidential March.

After things quitted down, and after saying another silent prayer, Zhang took a deep breath as he stepped forward to deliver his first address as President of the Republic of China. His gaze swept across the vast crowd before him, reflecting the diversity and unity of a nation that had faced tremendous trials and emerged stronger.

“My fellow citizens of the Republic of China," he began, his voice clear and resolute, carried by the crisp winter breeze, “today we gather not merely to witness the inauguration of a new President, but to celebrate the enduring strength of our great Republic. From our founding under Sun Yat-sen, through the darkest days of war and division, we have risen—guided by our unwavering belief in God’s providence, in our people, and in the principles that built this nation: Nationalism, Democracy, and Welfare.”

He paused, allowing the words to settle over the crowd, before continuing with more intensity.

“Our forefathers understood that a nation cannot stand without faith, without righteousness, and without the blessing of God. I stand before you today humbled by this great responsibility and fully aware that without God’s guidance, we cannot succeed. It is through Him that we draw our strength, and it is with His help that we will face the future with confidence.”

The crowd remained still, hanging on his words as he shifted to address the state of the nation.

“My countrymen, we live in an era of challenges and opportunities. Internally, we face corruption that has weakened our institutions, divisions that have slowed our progress, and threats to our sovereignty that we cannot ignore. As your President, I vow to root out the evils of corruption, cronyism, and injustice. The Republic of China will be governed not by the self-interested, but by those who fear God, who serve the people, and who seek the common good.

Let no man or woman think that they are above the law. Together, we will restore the integrity of this great office and the institutions that support it, because we answer to a higher power: God Almighty and the will of the people.”

The crowd erupted in applause, sensing the shift in tone, as Zhang pressed on with greater determination.

“We are a mighty nation, one that has endured hardship and risen to heights few could have imagined. Our sovereignty is non-negotiable. The Republic of China stands united from the deserts of the West to the mountains of Tibet, from the cities of the East to the plains of Mongolia. And we will continue to pursue the peaceful reunification of Taiwan. We seek peace, but let no nation mistake our desire for peace as weakness. We will defend every inch of our land, every citizen, and every right guaranteed by our Constitution with all the power bestowed upon us by God.”

The crowd’s cheers intensified at the mention of Taiwan, a deep-rooted cause of national pride and unity.

“However, we extend our hand in diplomacy to all nations who seek peace, cooperation, and mutual respect. The Republic of China does not seek conflict for the sake of conflict, but we will always stand firm in the face of aggression. To the world, I say this: we are a nation blessed by God, committed to peace, to justice, and to the pursuit of prosperity for all. But we will never sacrifice our sovereignty or our values on the altar of compromise."

He paused for a moment, his voice softening as he turned his gaze inward, speaking directly to the people of China.

“People of China, it is you who are the beating heart of this Republic. It is your work, your dedication, and your faith in God and country that make this nation great. Our success is not determined by the strength of one man, but by the collective strength of our people.

Our children, growing up in the farthest corners of this nation, will inherit a Republic rooted in faith, dedicated to justice, and committed to prosperity for all. We will build a future where every citizen, no matter their faith, ethnicity, or background, has the opportunity to thrive. But we must do so with God’s wisdom as our guide.”

His voice grew firmer, signaling a return to the broader challenges facing the nation.

“I pledge today that the Republic of China will continue its rise, but it will hopefully be a peaceful rise. We will work with other nations to ensure global stability, but we will not shrink from our duty to protect our interests and our allies. To those who would seek to destabilize our region or undermine our sovereignty, hear this: the Republic of China will not be shaken. We are a nation that draws its strength from God and its resolve from the mandate of the people."

The crowd erupted into applause once again, sensing the strength and determination in his words. Zhang, now visibly energized, continued.

“Our armed forces, blessed with the finest men and women, are stronger than ever. They stand ready to defend our Republic and to safeguard the peace we have built. Let the world know: the Republic of China is a force for peace, a beacon of hope, but also a defender of freedom and stability. We seek cooperation, but we will never surrender our principles."

As Zhang neared the end of his speech, his voice took on a solemn yet hopeful tone.

“My fellow citizens, as we embark on this new chapter, I call upon each of you to walk with me on this journey. God is with us, and as long as we remain faithful to His guidance and steadfast in our purpose, there is nothing we cannot achieve.

We will continue to build a nation that honors its traditions while embracing the future, a nation where democracy flourishes, and a nation that shines as a light to the world."

Finally, Zhang raised his hand, the crowd falling into a respectful silence as he spoke the closing words.

"May God bless the Republic of China, and may He guide us as we walk this path together. Long live the Republic of China!”

Presidential Palace
Nanjing
Republic of China
January 2nd, 2024

President Zhang sat in the grand Presidential Office Building in Nanjing, the seat of power for the Republic of China, now a global superpower. With control over mainland China and Mongolia, the nation stood as a pillar of strength in an unstable world. Less than 24 hours had passed since his inauguration, but the weight of responsibility was already tangible. His desk was overflowing with critical matters, each requiring immediate attention.

The Soviets loomed large as a threat, their communist ideology still a menace to freedom and faith around the world. They had been engaging in talks with the previous Chinese administration, but Zhang knew the discussions were precarious. Russia’s ambitions clashed with the values of the Republic of China, and Zhang had no desire to see communism spread further. His faith made him particularly wary of the atheistic regime to the north—he knew that beyond geopolitics, there was a spiritual battle at play. China’s rise was meant to counteract not only political tyranny but also the forces of godlessness that threatened the world.

The collapse of the United States had only deepened the global uncertainty. As new power dynamics emerged, Zhang understood that China’s leadership was more important than ever. The world looked to Nanjing, not just for economic or military strength, but for moral clarity. And as a devout Christian, Zhang knew that part of his calling was to ensure that China’s influence protected the vulnerable, including Christian communities under threat.

The ringing phone broke his thoughts. The light turned green, signaling that his conversation with Egypt’s President Sisi was about to begin. The situation in Egypt had become a priority for Zhang. The Middle East was a complex theater of power struggles, but Egypt, with its ancient Christian communities, was particularly close to his heart. The persecution of Christians in the region had weighed on him for years, and now, as leader of the world’s most powerful nation, he felt a personal responsibility to ensure their protection.

Taking a deep breath and saying a quiet prayer, Zhang lifted the receiver.

"President Sisi, how are you?" he asked, his tone warm but serious.

"Hello, Mr. President," Sisi said. "I'm as good as circumstances allow me to be. Our glorious armed forces are making progress in suppression the revolt by the bandits and terrorists."

“Well, that’s actually what I wanted to talk to you about. If we were to back you, would you be willing to commit to the protection of all your people, including the Christian community and their freedoms?” Zhang replied.

"Of course. We are committed to the principle of pluralism. Our Christian citizens are an important part of the national community of Egypt."

“I am glad to hear that, my friend. Now, given those assurances, my administration is willing to back you if we work to better ensure that all operations… meet the international standards. I am willing to deploy special forces and aircraft to Egypt in the coming weeks. Our other request is the ability to build a naval and air base on the Red Sea and that you will… see our side of things when it comes to the Communists and the Japanese. How does that sound?”

Sisi was silent for a brief moment. "That sounds like an acceptable deal. With your support, we can suppress the terrorists and ensure peace and prosperity. We could also use financial assistance in rebuilding from the war."

“Indeed. We can provide financial assistance and engineering expertise. I will also order a few planeloads of humanitarian relief.” The Chinese leader replied.

“Perhaps, before the next major offensive, we can see if we can, through diplomacy, peel off some of the more moderate rebels? Whittle the fighters down to just the communists and Islamists?”

"Unfortunately, diplomacy won't work. Believe me, I've tried to reason with them, but those people won't give up unless my legitimate government is overthrown. They only thing those bandits understand is brute force."

“Well, perhaps allow us a chance to speak to them. At least the legitimate democrats. Perhaps we can convince them at least to lay down their arms.”

"I will let you speak to them, but any changes in our government would be out of the question. We cannot give in to the demands of terrorists."

“Of course. Anything else, my friend?” Zhang asked

"I think that's it. Thank you for your assistance and valued cooperation"

President Zhang has announced a multinational coalition backing the Egyptian Government, following a string of calls made during his first few days in office. Current backers include France, the Gulf States, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Britain. Germany is likely to officially join in as well. This comes as humanitarian aid arrives from Nanjing to Egypt. It has also been announced that Chinese military aircraft and special forces will be deployed in the coming days to back the El-Sisi government in their fight for stability.

President Zhang has called on the global community to join in backing El-Sisi to ensure stability in the vital region. He also extended a hand to those he called "true patriots of Egypt seeking a better nation" to end their conflict with the government and to work with the coalition to keep the radical Islamists and Communists out of power. This new Chinese backing is likely to bring much needed military, humanitarian, and financial support to the El-Sisi government.

Pat Buchanan-President of Washington State (formerly Washington D.C).
White House
January 5th, 2024
The Culture War Part One

The White House sat empty as President Buchanan met with his closest associates to discuss the ongoing environmental protests in the city. Pat looked at a picture in his office of him on the campaign trail in 1991 back before the U.S. completely collapsed. "It was my turn, and that damn fool Dukakis ruined everything by letting the secessionists win," he thought and underneath the desk, a fist developed as he raged over the memories of the early collapse. The Atlantic Union brought some stability to the region, but its extreme privatization policies brought quick money at the expense of allowing every foreign despot to have a second home here. Brilliant young men and women who could have had a future keeping up the legacy of the United States chose to go to Europe, Japan, and even the Soviet Union.

At least the Soviets didn't plunder the country like the other two did, but whether it was for humanitarian reasons or pragmatic Pat could and probably would never be certain. He got his chance at the White House, but as the leader of a small state; in fact the smallest state within the United Republics of Columbia. There is a legacy here as this was the capital seat of the United States in truth until it became a symbolic capital in 1870. It was surrounded on one side by the Republic of Maryland a loyalist republic, and on the other end the State of Virginia treasonous in method and governance since April 17th, 1861. His campaign could have saved the United States, but it would have been unpopular with the establishment no doubt.

"America First and America Only," he thought turning his head to look at a portrait containing the former map of the United States. The Federal Government never truly got over the bitter sting of defeat at the hands of the Confederates, but policy, as the years went on, was a blatant refusal to acknowledge existence to reluctant diplomacy with back and forths depending on the administration in power. Even relations at their height never warranted the approval of a Confederate Embassy within Washington D.C. or Philadelphia. Instead, they were permitted an embassy on a corner in New York City well overshadowed by the former United Nations headquarters. If Pat Buchanan had his way the U.S. would have withdrawn from NATO as the European powers were mature and competent enough to take care of themselves and engage in a necessary detente with the Soviets until recovery had occurred.

"The Southern Traitors should have burned, Sherman had the right idea," Pat thought looking over at a map showing the areas that could potentially be struck during a nuclear war between the United States and the Confederacy. The separatists at home would have been crushed and then the United States would emerge collectively and march down South. Should the crusade to take the South failed then it would have burned as the last gasps of the Union were taken. "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all". Pat grimaced as he thought "If we cannot live as one nation, then we will die as one nation and history will judge us and our cause as righteousness". Pat was suddenly stirred from his thoughts by a voice calling for him "Pat...Pat...are you alright?" asked one of the men sitting next to him.

Image

Buchanan looked at the man and nodded "Yes, you will have to forgive me I was lost in thought for a moment. I was thinking back on memory lane and combing over some old regrets. So where are we on the progress of these street protests?" The man smiled before pulling out a manilla folder and laying out a map showing the city. He pointed to the entrances saying "We have managed to successfully block the entrances to the city to ensure only citizens of this state are participating in the climate marches and outside agitators aren't. We could run into some trouble as the border patrol denied entry to a bus of black students from Lincoln University out of Pennsylvania who were trying to join the protests here". Another man sitting at the table spoke up saying "Why would this cause any problems these northern republics know Segregation is a part of our way of life, and just as importantly so is border security during times of tense situations".

An older woman sitting at the time spoke up "Gentleman, you need to understand that it simply looks bad to try and passport check people who are Columbian citizens. It would be understandable if they were Confederates, but let's be realistic here. Washington State is a local not a national republic, and doesn't have the right to block citizens from other republics from visiting. If this case goes to court then we could see a losing battle. It would help if you had allowed the students to visit, but restricted them to specific sights". At another time she was the President of Maryland in the mid 2000s during a different time. Now she often goes rather ironically by the moniker Citizen Kane because she entered the world of business after retiring from the Maryland Presidency.

Pat raised an eyebrow and responded "You do realize that it would create an obvious issue, blacks and whites live in separate areas of the city, and protesting together is illegal. If we bring in black students from out of state then what's to stop black citizens here from going to Maryland, Delaware, or West Virginia and doing the same? It would undercut the peace and distract us from the threat of the Confederacy trying to stir the pot?" Mary Kane looked behind her chair and grabbed a map showing the current territory of the URC unfolding it the map happened to cover a huge part of the table much to the annoyance of others present. "Within the Constitution should a referendum occur a local Republic is allowed to start the procedure of exiting the current national Republic arrangement its in, and form its own. The Atlantic Union is a model of the past, and there has been a clear North-South divide since the Union's founding, the tensions could be exacerbated enough to warrant a referendum to ensure a split. This would create a third national republic within the URC, and grant us abilities to do things our own way". The people assembled at the table shook in agreement, and Pat spoke up "A culture war it is then, lets get started everyone".

Basilea ton Rhomanion - Co-Write between Dragos Bee and Sao Nova Europa

Antioch, Late Jaunary 2024

The Empress had further used up her credibility by sending messages to known Liberals, Social Democrats, and Secular Populists in the Egyptian Democratic Opposition, asking them to meet her, or said delegates to meet her, in a luxury hotel - One known for a distinguished clientele and a staff who can keep things private - in the City of Antioch; the central point of the discussion was to broker a break between these factions and the terrorist-affiliated 'Islamist' groups in exchange for several loans, humanitarian supplies, weapons and ammunition, and most importantly, recognition and diplomatic support.

After flying to Antioch, with the Varangians providing more security than usual, Empress Theodora IV Kastellanos entered the depths of the conference room situated in one of Antioch's best hotels. There, she waited, on the head of a modern oval table, for those who deigned to answer her call; she seemed out of place in her robes of state, yet she had to appear in them, to give the image of a 'true' monarch - Whatever that was in these modern times.

Either way, her plan was simple: Offer a blank check to the first person who can break with the terrorists and make it believable.

Commander Omar Qureshi entered the room. He bowed before the Empress. "Welcome your Imperial Majesty," he said.

The Empress stood up to receive him, saying, "Good morning, Commander."

She mentally reviewed what she knew about him, what dossiers she had received about this Commander and his achievements and his ideology, as well as how flexible yet consistent he was with them...

The Commander was a former Egyptian military officer jailed on corruption charges by the el-Sisi regime before the rebels managed to break him out and he became one of the leading military commanders of the Democratic Coalition. He knew that a good part of his men were affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood or ISIS or other militant Islamist groups, but before the Western media, he would try to downplay the connections.

A savvy man, but not to be trusted, thought the Empress, He'll probably divert my cash to some luxurious tax haven.

She hid her thoughts as she said, "So, where are the others? While we wait, what would be your preference in beverages? Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Tea?"

Best to give him my focus for a few seconds, if only to make him feel like he's receieving special attention.

"Tea, thank you."

The Empress gestured to a waiter to bring in a cart of beverages and refreshments, then, in a show of additional flattery, one meant to play up her feminine 'fraility' as an old woman, walked over to the cart and poured a glass of tea for her guest and one for herself, saying, "This is a mix of Jasmine and Chamomile Tea, it's the very same mixture this old woman uses."

A moment for the effects of this show of regard to seep in, before she added, "I risked a lot to take a stand for the Opposition, you know, so shortly after that horrendous attack on Madrid. The best that could be said about me right now is that I am going senile... But we both know that if the West gives unqualified support for tyrants and murderers, we will be suffering more tragedies like in Spain, not less, yes?"

"We did not have anything to do with the attack on Madrid," Omar lied. Yes, he didn't order it but some of his men were working with ISIS or had connections with Islamist organizations with a similar outlook. "We condemn all terrorist attacks."

Pursing her lips, the Empress gave a slight nod, before saying, "I am inclined to believe that statement, but the rest of the EU nations would not, especially not without proof. And even with proof, action does need to be taken to make sure the Opposition would continue to condemn terrorism."

She paused, before saying, "Commander, what do you value more? Potentially unreliable subordinates who can paint a target on your back, or the war materiel you will need to shatter the tyrant's slow destruction of Aswan?"

Omar knew the opposition couldn't afford a clean break with Islamists, even with potential foreign support. Liberals were a minority and most people on the field were actually sympathizers of the Muslim Brotherhood, if not supporters of more radical groups like ISIS. Liberals who wanted secularism and Western-style democracy were limited to an intellectual elite. Even himself, despite being more of a moderate, has sympathies leaning closer to the Muslim Brotherhood rather than Westernizing liberals. "As I've stated," Omar lied, "we've got nothing to do with terrorist attacks in the West. As for what some of my men may privately believe, I cannot control their thoughts. That's what dictators, like el-Sisi, do. We would welcome any assistance we can get though."

The Empress nodded and said, "A tactful response."

She then gestured to an aide to bring her what seemed to be a small Kindle, which she handed over to Omar; said 'Kindle' contained a list of Roman military hardware produced by the defense industry, which ranged from small arms to rocket-propelled-grenades to Red Colt Tanks, MRLSes, and UAVs.

Her next words were, "All of this can be yours', along with disassembled airplanes that can be reassembled in airfields in the Sinai and used against the foe. But in exchange, if you truly cannot purge your ranks of those who may not have our best interests at heart, protect Saint Catherine's Monastery - Make sure it does not come to harm and make a show of doing so."

Omar could do that. He couldn't purge the Islamists out of his forces - they were an important part of his coalition and what was the point of getting military equipment if there weren't men on the field - but he could get most of his men to avoid damaging Saint Catherine's Monastery. Of course, rogue elements might try to attack anyway, but he could try to redirect their attention to other targets (the Copts were a convenient target). "Of course," he said after a brief moment of thought. "I shall do my utmost to ensure the monastery doesn't come to harm."

The Empress smiled at that and said, "Good. Make a public statement saying it is under your protection, and I will have a unit of, say... 15 UAVs already pre-built shipped to the Sinai 24 to 48 hours after the end of that statement. And it will only be the first of many shipments."

Commander Omar Qureshi announced today that Saint Catherin's Monastery in Sinai would be protected and not come in harm's way. The Egyptian government, in response to this announcement, also announced that the monastery would be protected, and accused the Democratic Coalition of hypocrisy, citing attacks on Coptic churches by affiliated militants (which the opposition denies).

Geopolitics Journal

Today, ships of Norland and the USSR were captured sailing together in the Mediterranean Sea. According to the official statement of the press center of the coordination center, "Norland, together with the USSR, is carrying out a mission to protect trade near the borders of Egypt." The Norland mission, we recall, began after fears of an escalation of the conflict in Egypt and that this could potentially hit trade through the largest of the trade hubs - the Suez Canal. However, only now has it become known that the mission was planned as an international one.
We assume that NATO's task in this conflict is primarily "destroying the problem", but they do not believe that the operation can drag on, while the USSR, faced with the largest terrorist attack, understands that underestimating an enemy using terrorist means of struggle is not worth it.
First of all, within Norland, this will clearly strengthen the electoral positions of the Laborites, since it was the "opposition bloc" that turned out to be right from the point of view of electoral politics, saying that the Soviet Union is more capable of negotiating. Accordingly, now the "big centrist bloc" will try to unite the efforts of delivery and distribution of the humanitarian mission with the Western countries of the coalition, as opposed to the USSR, and also participate in other international humanitarian initiatives. First of all, now the "big centrist bloc" needs to show the advantages of the West over the East, to lobby for the privatization of Norland property to Western companies after the elections. In addition, the success of these negotiations clearly outweighed the unconvincing success of the previous ones, accordingly, most likely, cooperation between the USSR and Norland will go in this direction. The protection of the Suez Canal, judging by everything, is far from the last international humanitarian project in the plans of Soviet-Norland relations.

Izvestia - Reports of Soviets of Peoples' Deputies of the USSR

SOVIET UNION PUTS PEACEKEEPING MISSION TO SUEZ IN FRONT OF UN SECURITY COUNCIL, CRITICIZES UNILATERAL MILITARY ACTION

There are few arteries more essential to the life or global civilization than the Suez Canal. Originally constructed by British and French imperialists and then nationalized after the close of the Great Patriotic War by President Nasser it has only had one long term closure before due to the wars between the Arab states and Israel. To avoid such a closure happening again due to war the Soviet Union has put forward a resolution in the security council of the United Nations to deploy peacekeeping troops in the Suez Canal Zone with the cooperation of the Egyptian government that would be responsible for keeping the zone clear of fighting and in regular operation. Revenue from the canal would be unaffected and continue flowing to its operators and ultimately the Egyptian state. Nordland and the Soviet Union have already partnered to keep the trade route safe from terrorism through the deployment of a number of ships to the region including the Soviet Navy’s Krivak class frigate Ladny and two Grachonok guard ships that will be operating together with Nordland’s navy. There are no plans to deploy naval infantry at this time or request the right to deploy them from the Egyptians. The Soviet Foreign Ministry emphasizes the multilateral nature of this action and cooperation with the Egyptian and other governments to protect both Egyptian and international interests in the Suez Canal zone’s security. Furthermore Foreign Minister Lavrov criticized the Chinese dispatch of special forces units to Egypt to directly aid the Egyptian military as an “inherently escalatory” act that would only encourage more direct foreign intervention in the civil war. The Soviet Union is absolutely against any foreign soldiers fighting in Egypt and will only support foreign troops in the country if they are under the flag of the UN and participating in operations to reduce the scale of fighting rather than increase it such as in the case of a Suez Canal peacekeeping force. There is no indication that the recent thaw in Soviet-Chinese relations is under any risk as the foreign minister avoided outright condemning the Chinese military presence in Egypt. The statement also ruled out the possibility of the Soviet Union sending its own military to fight in Egypt and called upon the NATO countries and other concerned powers to also do so.

SOVIET SCIENTISTS SAY CLIMATE CHANGE FEAR “OVERBLOWN”

Protests for action on “climate change” related issues have in the past month occurred in multiple European and American cities. There were smaller scale similar demonstrations in Moscow, Leningrad, Minsk, and Kiev which were orderly and mainly attended by university students or young people. The Soviet Union has been extremely reluctant to sign any international agreements that would allow individuals or organizations in other countries to file legal cases against Soviet industry or that are based on scientific studies whose results are not corroborated by similar research in the USSR. The Institute of Ecology and Evolution which is part of the Soviet Academy of Sciences has published studies and articles against the most extreme and alarmist sentiments that are unfortunately common among some groups in the west. The IEE has pointed towards previous faulty western environmental predictions relating to the environment, in particular those calling for a reduction in consumption or the human population. It has furthermore stated that there is no conclusive proof that climate change is entirely man made and stressed the importance of understanding natural factors at work that are not yet fully understood in our climate. But why does western science seem to disagree and predict some climate doomsday every decade? In order to understand this we must understand the groups funding most western climate science and giving it a political dimension. The “Club of Rome” is a well known alliance of western elites which have since the organization’s foundation in 1968 worked to further the reactionary agenda of population reduction and originated many of the ideological points of the modern climate movement. The Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation of the former USA are also western organizations dedicated to promoting climate change politics which in general are aimed at restraining the development of the third world, limiting regional economic integration, and maintaining the domination of western industrial and financial monopolies wherever it is possible to do so. Overseas they work to lobby less developed countries not to expand affordable means of power generation such as coal or engage in the development wealthy industrialized countries such as Germany or the Soviet Union have engaged in. These foreign non-governmental organizations and many others are illegal in the Soviet Union but may have still penetrated the minds of students or other groups that are not aware of the anti-soviet goals and backers of modern climate activists. The USSR continues on its own path of adapting to a changing environment, but it will always do so while continuing economic expansion and development.

THE SECRET WAR
January 27th, 2024

Image
A statue of Felix Dzerzhinsky, the (Polish) founder of the Soviet Cheka stands outside of the KGB's headquarters in Moscow

There are few organizations more expansive in their scope and more diverse in their capabilities than the Soviet KGB. Responsible for foreign intelligence, domestic counter-intelligence, cryptography, security of soviet leaders, government communications, and numerous other functions it is the only institution that could rival the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in power. In many ways it used to be difficult to tell the difference between the KGB and Party, with all Soviet leaders since Gorbachev’s ousting in 1986 coming to power with the support of the KGB whose chairman has always had a seat on the Politburo of the CPSU. Because it is such a large organization that occupies the duties many other states would divide into a much more expansive array of departments it would be difficult for it not to exert massive political influence.

The KGB’s complexity and power is mirrored only by its myriad of enemies. The French DSGE, Chinese Juntong, and German BND are only a few of the KGB’s adversaries. But of particular interest to the Soviet Union is its oldest and most dangerous enemies in Germany and Poland. From even before the Soviet Union's official creation when the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic led by Lenin fought with both powers. During the Second World War they were at each other’s necks, both nearly destroying the other until the devastation of continental Europe threatened to suck in much of the world. Ever since the day a peace was signed and the United Nations was created to keep it the rivalry and constant battle between the organizations has continued on. In the modern age the KGB has developed new tools to further the aims of Soviet foreign policy and Communist internationalism. In the European NATO countries the KGB carefully watches the political situation for any signs of weakness or indications of potential future government action. It maintains a file on every member of the Polish, German, and French national legislatures. The KGB's foreign directorate uses its numerous digital and information tools to monitor populist movements across Europe and provide support when necessary - almost always without the movement knowing. The Communist parties of Poland and Germany in particular are illegal, and assailed by secret police daily. Without the resources to protect themselves they depend on close cooperation with the KGB to unmask secret police spies, secure their communications, and maintain their political activities. The Communist Parties of Poland and Germany have been turned into networks the KGB sees as capable of taking command of left wing populist power in those countries in a situation where political weakness makes suppression of the Communist Party impossible. Teams of analysts that work to identify the most effective way to attack the legitimacy of the government and economic system in NATO states provide information to local Communists which is then disseminated into alternative media and political organizations partially or fully under Communist control. These analysts also process information provided by local Communists, some of which work as spies for the KGB rather than participants in the country’s politics. While the USSR can acquire foreign human intelligence by ideological methods it also relies on paid assets or those who can be blackmailed into working for a foreign government. Some are not even aware they provide information to the KGB. Many of them are used for the gathering economic espionage that can keep the USSR ahead of foreign technology or for the gathering of multitudes of other data that is required to understand and defeat an enemy society. In the modern era a new front of this war is opened in digital space rather than physical. The KGB has not one, but multiple cyber-war divisions dedicated to different functions. The best of them are strong contenders for the world leaders in cyber insecurity.

But the most active front today of the secret and long war against the forces of international reaction is in Africa. The Sahel region is one center of Soviet activity on the continent and it is also where a group sometimes called by its 'employees' the “Karl and George Brothers company” operates. Soviet military trainers and Biafran mercenaries with fighting experience often work under many far more bureaucratic names of different “security consultant” groups. This both helps obfuscate the number of Soviet military personnel in the Sahel at any one time and creates a structure for foreign ‘talent’ to be brought in, such as that from Biafra. Occasionally the “K & GB” fights in battles, although always in local uniform. The KGB has yet to deploy this new tool that in some way resembles the western private military company outside of Africa, but every front of the war is also a laboratory for testing new methods. Elsewhere the KGB employs different methods to aid - or create - friendly governments. Across the Sahara and at the other side of the continent the KGB maintains a growing branch in Egypt. Pretending to be arms dealers or other men who have business in the war torn country representatives of the KGB make contact and connections with military officers struggling to supply their men and make profitable deals and plans for the future of Egypt. While other intelligence services might concern themselves only with information collection and supplying local allies, to prepare the ground for Operation Sandstorm - the KGB’s most ambitious plot in recent history - new allies must be created and new connections made. Only the most thorough preparation can ensure the success of Sandstorm.

SOMEWHERE IN EGYPT

Ivan and Sergei relaxed against the back of their chairs in what used to be a restaurant. Their nondescript civilian jackets hung off the back of those chairs and Like so many other businesses in more rural communities across the upper reaches of the Nile it had been devastated by war. The appliances and electrical wire had been ripped from the walls by looters and there was some evidence of a gunfight in the upper level of the building. The patterned wallpaper and well decorated interior indicated it was an establishment that catered to the more well off when it operated. It must have been a nice place to eat once.

Suddenly Ivan’s phone - a disposable one of course - buzzed. That meant their man on the roof had seen the ‘clients’ arriving. He and Sergei sat up. Ivan put his phone away and his briefcase on the table. He adjusted his shirt to better hide the pistol he carried as Sergei did the same. A moment later they heard cars coming to a stop outside and four men in Egyptian military uniform exited. They walked quickly towards Ivan and Sergei’s table. Two sat down, while two guards with AK assault rifles remained standing.

Sergei prepared his passable Egyptian Arabic. “I believe we delivered you those guns last month.”

The officer sitting across from him with a prominent mustache did not find the remark amusing. “Let’s talk about today’s business rather than yesterday’s. Why did you two Russians want to talk to us in this shit hole? Are you selling something too dangerous to talk about at the usual place?”

The other one who lacked a mustache but had dark sunglasses and a stubble began talking immediately after. “I haven’t met you two before - what happened to the old guys?”

“The old guys are still here, Colonel Moradi.” Sergei said. “We just have an offer that needs extra security to give.”

“What is it then?” The Colonel asked.

“My friend and I have an offer from our employers. They’re interested in making sure Egyptian politics moves in a positive direction.”

The other officer interjected. “What does that mean for the Russians?”

“It means, Colonel Azizi, that we have a government that is willing to see reason and has some vision - leadership that doesn’t squander Egypt’s potential like President Sisi does.” Sergei answered.

The officers looked to each other and then back to Sergei. “We don’t want communism in Egypt, you understand that?”

Ivan and Sergei nodded. “We aren’t asking you to be Communists. When we provided you weapons we did not ask you become Communists either. All we want is to have good relations with an Egypt led by more… how to say it in Arabic? Open minded men.” Sergei said. He gestured to Ivan, who retrieved a briefcase from next to the table. The guards kept their eye on Ivan’s hands while he opened the case and - not too quickly - spun it around. It was full of gold bars.

Ivan looked at the two of them. “This is only the first part of our financial aid package. Are you open minded men, Colonel Azizi? Colonel Moradi?” He asked.

The two examined the bars, turning them over in their hands. The guards at their sides took glances at the metal while they did.

The Egyptians answered simultaneously. “Tell us more details.”

Ivan and Sergei let themselves crack a smile.
“It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed hungry person. True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper.” -J. V. STALIN

CLIMATE MARCHES LEAD TO GLOBAL COOLING

The Green Party held loud marches for the environment on weekends for three weeks in a row. This caused discord within the "big centrist bloc" as most of the coalition members considered environmental control "untimely" during the privatization period. And today, the chairman of the Green Party, Hanson Ford, made a statement: "In the new election cycle, we will not be in the "big centrist bloc" among people who are callous to the problems of global warming. We will be in this election as part of the "opposition bloc." The Stockholm Times newspaper published an investigation after the statement, in which it accused Hanson of hypocrisy, since his family members actively used gasoline-powered transport and he himself often traveled around the world by plane. Hanson denied the accusations, calling the "big centrist bloc" a vengeful teenager who cannot accept being wrong. According to the survey, the rating of the "opposition bloc" suddenly soared to 56%, and there was a real risk of the Labor Party returning to power. However, the newspaper "Copenhagen-31" then published an investigation about the Danish chairman of the Labor Party. According to the data, Torgred Bostrod, when he was studying to be a lawyer, communicated with Ingrid Fockenberg, who was tried in 1997 for working for Soviet intelligence, in 2001 they were released due to new circumstances that came to light, and she left for the Soviet Union. Soon they had an affair and in 1996 Torgred joined the Communist Party of Denmark, but was unsuccessful, in 2002 he ran for the Folketing from the Labor Party. In 2006, he spread rumors about the Danish chairman of the Labor Party, which soon led to his expulsion from the party. In 2009, a man similar to Torgred was captured in a photograph on Red Square. Based on this, "Copenhagen-13" concluded that Torgred worked for Soviet intelligence, and he was not the only one. The party itself defends Soviet interests in Norland. However, the Labor Party accused the "grand center coalition" of a dirty election campaign and threatened to sue the Moderate Party. But this managed to roll back the Labor Party rating by 4% and raise the rating of the "big centrist bloc". The press center of the advisory council denies the accusations, believing that the facts are not very well founded and the authorities have no information about his work for any of the existing special services. Thus, an active discussion began before the elections.

President Macron Announces French Participation in Chinese-Led Intervention in Egypt:

Paris, January 7th - In a surprise announcement, this morning President Macron announced that France would be partaking in an international effort led by the Republic of China to ensure stability in Egypt and the security of maritime trade. The move comes after a call between the French and Chinese Presidents, marking a reversal from previous French neutrality in the conflict. According to the President's short address, the coalition would be providing direct support to the Egyptian Government, led by President el-Sisi who has been known for his strong-handed approach to the war. Reportedly, the coalition includes China, France, Britain, Germany, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. The French Prime Minister is said to have also reached out to the Spanish and Italian governments about joining the coalition, although it is not known if they will join the effort.

President Macron told the press; "France is committed to its allies across the globe and the international rules based order. We are committed to combating terrorism and instability."

While not many details of French involvement were released by the President, a spokesperson for his office clarified that French participation would be "defensive in nature," and primarily be aimed at protecting civilians and international trade through the Suez Canal, as well as operations against Islamic State terror affiliates within the Democratic Front. An official with the Ministry of Armed Forces confirmed that French ground forces would not be deployed in combat roles at the moment, rather, French naval and air forces would provide supporting roles.

French government officials have attempted to link the intervention to French operations against ISIS in Africa, with Director Nicolas Lerner of the Directorate-General for External Security telling members of the National Assembly, "We have received intelligence suggesting Soviet material and intelligence support for the Democratic Front in Egypt. If confirmed, this would correspond with our intelligence proving Soviet support for coups in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to sow instability and conflict. I am of the opinion that this is part of a connected Soviet scheme to undermine local governments in Africa and replace them with pro-Soviet proxies. I have also seen unconfirmed reports suggesting secret Soviet support for Islamic State forces in Africa, which they are using to terrorize Europe and local regions. The Soviets are moving away from direct confrontations to hybrid warfare in which they sow instability and unrest. This poses an immense threat to the interests of freedom and democracy, and is why France and NATO must step up efforts to counter Soviet destabilization campaigns."

A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry clarified, "We do not seek conflict with the Soviet Union, not in Egypt nor in the rest of the world. However, we are prepared to stand up to all threats to our citizens and peace in the region, including their irresponsible and illegal support for the illegitimate regimes in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which have fostered the disorder which has allowed ISIS to rise again and threaten people everywhere."

Addressing concerns about vocal Roman support for the Democratic Opposition, President Macron told reporters; "I urge the Roman government to reconsider its position on the issue. As a NATO treaty ally, the Roman Government should hold its commitment to the rules-based order and avoid the provision of diplomatic or military support to destabilizing insurgents fighting the legitimate Egyptian government. We will be in communication with them about this matter."

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire also reported that the ministry would be investigating the possibility of sanctions against elements of or the entire Democratic Opposition, with initial reports musing an embargo on arms and weapons technology being put in place.

A statement from the French Navy announced that in support of the coalition, France would deploy the Richelieu Carrier Task Force, which will include the Mistral amphibious assault ship, the destroyers Chevalier Paul and Normandie, the frigate Surcouf, the submarine Duguay-Trouin, the avisos Commandant Birot and Enseigne de vaisseau Jacoubet, the minesweepers Andromède and Vulcain, supported by the Somme replenishment oiler. The Mistral is rumored to be carrying the elite Commando Jaubert counter-terrorism unit, said to be part of an effort to "blockade" rebel-held areas and intercept suspicious shipping.

NATO Launches Retaliatory Strikes on ISIS in Sahel Region:

Paris, January 10th - A spokesperson with the Ministry of Armed Forces reported that during the early hours of this morning, aircraft belonging to NATO launched a series of airstrikes against targets belonging to the Islamic State in the Sahel region of Africa, in retaliation for the attack by ISIS militants on Madrid. According to the spokesman, France provided a sizable contribution to the mission, utilizing carrier and land-based aircraft to deliver precision-guided missiles against their targets.

"French aircraft successfully struck five terror sites, including two major training encampments, two weapons depots, and a command and control post. While a damage assessment is still ongoing, at this time we believe that all missiles hit their assigned targets." reported the spokesman. "At no point did French or coalition aircraft cross into Malian, Nigerien, or Libyan airspace, nor did coalition aircraft encounter any airborne threats. We do not seek conflict with the respective governments of the mentioned nations, and we are fully prepared to cooperate with them against Islamic terror."

President Macron's office congratulated NATO forces, describing them as "brave" and "heroic" in a statement thanking them for their support. The statement warned however, "So long as ISIS remains a continued threat in the region, NATO will continue to take measures against it. Our strikes today are not going to be the last against the Islamic State."

French Naval Task Force Arrives off Egyptian Coast:

Paris, January 23rd - After a five day journey from Toulon, the Richelieu Carrier Task Force has arrived off the coast of Egypt in preparation of coalition efforts to support the Egyptian government and to defend international access to trade and air routes. The powerful surface group brings in massive French capabilities to the region, boasting dozens of carrier fighter jets and numerous powerful vessels.

According to a statement from the Navy, NH90 Caïman Marine helicopters and Rafale M jets have already begun to patrol around the Suez Canal and off the coast of Egypt, in coordination with the Egyptian government. No strikes against any targets have been carried out as of the time of writing.

Rear Admiral Marc Aussedat, the overall commander for the task force, told reporters aboard the carrier that the fleet would be conducting air and naval patrols in the Suez and around the Sinai, in an effort to "isolate" the Democratic Opposition there. He further stated that suspicious air or naval traffic would be monitored, advising that commercial shipping stay within internationally recognized trade routes and call for assistance if they were attacked or threatened.

Now that his call with President Sisi had finished, President Zhang waited for the line to Paris to connect. As it turned green, the Chinese leader said a prayer before picking up the phone and saying “Monsieur President, how are you today? It is good to finally speak with you as President here in Nanjing.”

"President Zhang, I am doing well, how are you?" replied President Macron as he leaned back into his chair. "I would like to congratulate you once again on your recent election. I am looking forward to working with you and the KMT towards our mutual interests in Asia and across the globe."

“Thank you, my friend. I actually wanted to discuss one of those points of mutual interest with you. Egypt. I just got off the phone with President Sisi, we are keen on backing him in that civil war. I don’t particularly like him or his government, but I believe he represents the best chance for stability and protecting Egypt from becoming Communist or Islamist. Would France be willing to also lend him support?” Zhang replied.

"While you are right about that, el-Sisi's methods are questionable." said Macron bluntly. "The casualty reports coming out of Egypt are horrendous, and most of them are civilians. That is not to say that the Democratic Front is doing any better, however it might be a bad look if people see French and Chinese bombs being used indiscriminately against innocent civilians."

He paused. "However, I would be willing to offer them support if China is willing to offer support for one of France's initiatives. We are looking into the possibility of seeking regime change in Niger to restore the democratically-elected President, and I would appreciate Chinese backing."

“Of course, you have our support there, would you need troops or just air support? As for Egypt, it is my hope to see our influence on Sisi… curtail some of the worst atrocities. I did have him agree to bring the conflict and his military actions in-line with international norms.” Zhang replied.

"We are planning a multi-staged operation into Niger. At this stage, we are only seeking to free the democratically-elected President, which will be carried out by our intelligence services. So we will only need diplomatic support, while we seek to avoid a direct intervention. We may ultimately choose to conduct operations into Niger if the military junta does not back down, but that is a topic for another time." replied Macron.

"With regards to Egypt, I am glad that you have convinced el-Sisi to refrain from targeting civilians. We will have to see if his words amount to action, but I would be happy to see China take the lead on that initiative. Now, would our support involve financial and military aid, or are you considering direct intervention?"

“I am offering direct action to Sisi. Mostly airstrikes but also special forces. I worry that the longer this continues, the more opportunity there is for the Islamists or Communists to gain strength. I do plan to try and convince the true democrats to lay down their arms, I don’t want needless bloodshed.” Zhang replied.

"I see. I would be willing to deploy a naval task force to the region to provide security for international shipping around Egypt, which can provide limited air and naval support for your operation. I can also see about putting an aid package together." said Macron. "I believe it would be best to build a coalition of states for an intervention, so that our actions do not appear unilateral. If you could bring Germany, Britain, and some other Arab states on board, I believe that help avoid some potential backlash."

“Thank you, my friend. I can make some calls before our forces arrive to announce an international coalition. I’m sending some humanitarian aid as well that should arrive in the next few days. Would you be ok if I tell the others that you are on board? It might lend credibility, especially with Berlin and London.”

"Of course. I will also reach out to some of our local partners in Africa and the Middle East for their backing." replied Macron.

“Thank you, now was there anything else you wished to discuss? If not, I would like to invite you to Nanjing at your earliest convenience.” Zhang replied

"I don't believe so, at least, not at the moment. And yes, I would be very happy to go to Nanjing when the opportunity presents itself. Thank you very much for your time, my friend." said Macron.

“Thank you, Monsieur. Que Dieu vous bénisse ainsi que la France.” Zhang replied

Charles de Gaulle Carrier Strike Group
30 Miles off the Coast of Algiers

3 AM Local Time

Europe was incensed in the aftermath of the shocking terror attacks in Madrid, and France was not hesitant to lead calls in NATO for a unified response. After several days of coordination with NATO governments, it had finally been decided that NATO would strike hard against the growing ISIS insurgency in the Sahel, believed to be behind the Madrid attack.

In the darkness of the very early morning, jets circled overhead the French Carrier Strike Group, composed of the Charles de Gaulle, the destroyers Aquitaine and Horizon and a support ship. Elsewhere, Spanish, German, and French Air Force fighters were already making their way across the Mediterranean to launch strikes against the targets they had been assigned.

As the last Dassault Rafale Ms took off from the carrier, it was time to begin their strikes. Three dozen fighter jets flew in formation as they began their journey towards their targets, all the while as 6 Air and Space Force Airbus A330 MRTT Phénix tankers circled over the Algerian desert ready to provide refueling support to NATO forces. Closer to the borders shared with Niger and Mali, an Air and Space Force Boeing E-3F Sentry maintained a watchful eye over the sky as it was escorted by pair of Mirage 2000-5F.

18 of the Rafale Ms carried a ground-attack loadout, equipped with a single air-launched variant of the MdCN, capable of striking 1,400 km away with a potent 300 kg warhead. On their wings they carried two MICA-EM air-to-air missiles for self-defense, while 6 of the other Navy fighter were equipped with full air superiority loadouts, ready to defend against any unlikely air threats with four MICA-EMs and two Meteors each.

The French Air and Space Force was supporting the strikes with another 12 Rafale Cs and 6 Mirage 2000Ds carrying a single SCALP-EG and two MICA-IRs apiece, joining the navy units as they flew towards their objectives.

Taking on fuel just about half-way to their launch points, the jets powered on and an just an hour and a half after launching from the carrier, the fighters were ready to begin their strikes. Splitting off to launch their missiles, 6 Air Force Mirage 2000Ds were the first to fire, sending all 6 of their SCALP-EG cruise missiles towards a Islamic State-Libya Province weapon storage site tucked away in a small village in the Al-Haruj Mountains.

The other 12 Rafale Cs pressed on to fire their SCALP-EGs against an Islamic State-Sahel Province weapon storage site and a command and control facility in Tessalit, Mali. All the while, the Rafale Ms launched their MdCNs, sending 9 of the long-range missiles towards a training camp near Ménaka in Mali, as the 9 other missiles raced towards a training camp located in Niger's West National Park.

Several other targets would be struck, by Spanish and German forces similarly conducting missile strikes against ISIS facilities and positions. Now as the pilots breathed a sigh of relief at a successful mission, only time and several satellite overpasses would tell if the strikes would have an impact.

As French naval forces made their way towards Egypt, the minds of French decision-makers were elsewhere - Niger.

"I am supportive of your proposals, Director. But does the DGSE really believe that we can rely on mercenaries for such an operation?" asked Macron as he huddled with his top military and intelligence advisors.

"Sir, I am of the opinion that the use of mercenaries would provide necessary deniability to our operation that the use of DGSE or military operatives cannot. They may not be as capable, but if we are favoring a smaller more covert operation, then this would be the best option." replied Director Lerner. "Already we are going to have a difficult time getting forces into the capital. A few dozen mercenaries can be brought in commercially, as opposed to requiring an insertion.

"I see. But I am afraid that it may prove to be too limited in scope to achieve the desired results. Simply rescuing the President may not be enough, and might even rally Mali or Burkina Faso to their aid." said Macron. "I want an option where we put fear in the hearts of the juntas, where it is clear that if they intervene, there will be a heavy cost for their regimes."

"We do have a secret base in Benin." chimed in General Lecointre. "On its own it would be insufficient as a launchpad for a comprehensive operation, but if we bring in air units to Chad and via carrier, it could be perfect to deploy our special forces from. Close to their capital, they won't notice a build-up like they would if we initiated from Chad, they won't expect it."

Macron looked at Director Lerner. "Very well. Proceed with planning for a direct operation with Special Forces and DGSE launching the assault from Benin, with air support from the Charle de Gaulle and from our bases in Chad. Have the 4th RHFS begin training for the infiltration, and direct BFSA and Commando Trépel to train in coordination with them for the hostage rescue mission."

Basilea ton Rhomanion

Radio Konstantinopolis, January 22 2024

The Empress responded to the French over a public radio address; a copy was also circulated on social media.

"I love Liberalism. I am not necessarily a Democrat; I am an executive monarch, after all, but the appeal of universal freedoms and values and the dignity of every human being and their right to pursue their paths to happiness, under a platform of equal opportunities, those appeal to me."

An audible sigh could be heard through the speakers.

"And one of the central aspects of Liberalism is that human life, regardless of creed, is precious and that all lives are created equal despite whatever merits or flaws they might acquire after creation, and become equal in death, the great leveler that takes us all. While giving vocal support to people accused of terrorism was a step too far, and I bear the guilt in going to such an extreme length, which might be insanity and dementia, we will not be accessories to genocide."

A pause, before she followed up with:

"If the Democratic Opposition is unworthy of support, so is the regime slaughtering its people in Aswan right now. Use your brains; the terrorist attack on Madrid was directly caused by support for bloodthirsty tyrants like Sisi, as well as Western Policies that sought to kick the can of discontent among the Global South to the next generation. Even if the Democratic Opposition was an IS front and its defeat meant fewer terrorists in the world, what happens if the next generation of people outside The West, including Christians, Hindus, and Buddhists, hate us more than they do IS - who hates them - because they identify with people like themselves more than they do the richer countries of the north?"

Another sigh, before the address resumed.

"If we were asked to kill 40,000 Catholics, or Huguenots, we would have given the same refusal. As it is, in response to blandishments and threats, we are withdrawing 'our vocal support' for the Democratic Opposition but will not participate in what will inevitably be active targeting of civilians, weaponization of humanitarian aid, and mass murder unrivaled since the Mongol Invasions - I do not believe the assurances that it would be otherwise. If we are to retreat, we will retreat - But we will not participate in your Coalition and we hope that its failure would save the last embers of Liberal, Universalist, Thought from the loss of credibility that this hopeless 'forever war' will no doubt bring."

Our country is surrounded by enemies: communists and terrorists, and you think we should trust their hangers-on, the Labor Party? The fact is that there are many KGB agents inside the Labor Party. Their goal is to turn Scandinavia into another totalitarian "Soviet Republic" with labor camps and persecution of dissidents. That is why we, with our jazz ensemble "Copenhagen Sunset", stand for the call of the "moderate party" :"to vote or lose".

It's time to understand that Norland has never been weak, and its neutrality is not dictated by a weak character. It is dictated by the desire to bring peace and order without entering into a fight. However, we consider interference in the elections by the USSR unacceptable, and we will be forced to react. Ultimately, the "doctrine of neutrality" has long required softening, the time has come when without this softening we will not be able to deliver a worthy response. By interfering in the elections, the USSR is pushing us to depart from the traditions of neutrality, however, Norland has always been a country of peace and tranquility, therefore I still declare that we are open to negotiations on de-escalation.

ELECTIONS WITH A HUMAN FACE

An unknown hacker under the nickname Pravda_comradRAF13 suddenly flashed in the news agenda, having sold a folder with compromising documents to "Northern Lights TV" and the newspaper "Express-n". They indicated details of the political life of many politicians of the Moderate Party and the "Northern Way" party with photographs. A member of the Norwegian government from the Moderate Party, Elisa Fjerge, slept with a German intelligence officer, came to the attention of Norwegian intelligence on this account, but was able to play out a scandal and a break in relations. A major entrepreneur of the state corporation "National Oil League" Bjorn Hantelnberg maintained a large fund "for democratic values", into which money from the unaccounted income of the oil company was transferred directly to support the political and civil movement. Much of the fund's funds came from Germany. He supplied a number of politicians, such as Leo Anders, Olaf Kroynberg. Also according to their data, the recent wave of anti-labor hysteria when movie stars, music stars, famous writers began to support Kreunberg's idea of "vote or lose" and the negative investigations into the "opposition bloc" were precisely financed by Hantenberg, who was the link between Western funds and Nordic politicians. He personally hired political strategist Jonas Rix for a number of ultra-right politicians, both parliamentary from the "Northern Path" party Hans Sven and the radical neo-Nazi "pure blood" Fjerda Fly. The Norwegian Intelligence Service was able to identify the criminal, but by that time he was in the USSR. He was a retired employee of the Norwegian Intelligence Service Andes Niisar, a native of Denmark. However, Andrei Bogolyubtsev, with similar external data, served in the KGB at the same time. The Coordination Center protested the "blatant interference in the internal affairs of the USSR" and demanded that the criminal be extradited to Norland. However, the act that was supposed to bring down the ratings of anti-communists, however, the ratings were equalized again, but the supporters of the Labor Party are no longer applicable to the "West", and the supporters of the "large centrist bloc" on the contrary, to the USSR. The only one who clearly benefited from the situation was Haakon Christian, the head of the Coordination Council, as this gave rise to an emergency meeting of the Coordination Council with the goal of uniting Norland's intelligence officers into one large one - the Norland Committee of Military Intelligence and Counterintelligence. It is not yet clear about the results of the meeting, but one thing is known - the elections can be called one of the dirtiest but most competitive after the 2008 crisis.

January 23rd Op-Ed
Cincinnati Flu: 4 Years On, Millions Dead, and Questions Unanswered
Author: Lenora Fulani-Psychologist

It came into the world in late 2019, but no one could distinguish it from the regular Flu. The Flu season was in full swing, and millions of Columbians were getting their regularly scheduled vaccinations as were millions of other people across the Former U.S. The reports started coming in from clinics as far north as Boise, Idaho to as south as Los Angeles, California. This ramped up when French doctors began to communicate with the Columbia CDC following the collapse of a passenger of American origin on the streets of Paris. The man appeared to have a form of the Flu that no one could easily recognize, and was in such a state of delirium that getting any information out of him proved impossible. He would die in a Parisian hospital in November 19th, 2019, but by that point its suspected he had infected at least 100 people at that point.

In December 2019 the Columbia CDC began to talk with its counterparts in Nanjing who reported that a Chinese citizen had come home ill to her home in Shanghai. She had been attending a business meeting with Swiss executives in Zurich, and it would later be found out that the international repertoire of that meeting would return to their home and spread the infection there. Christmas and New Years came by as the infection began to spread worldwide. In January 2020 leaked footage started coming out of Cincinnati, Ohio of people collapsing in the streets with symptoms matching the Parisian and Shanghai cases. The Columbia CDC got together with their counterparts in France and China speculating that this was in fact the same strain and not just a bad flu season.

Footage and social media chats started leaking on 4chan, Reddit, and other popular media sites showing the true extent of just how bad things were. Citizens huddled together in desperate formations at hospitals trying to get any possible aid, people isolated in their homes fearful of their neighbors, and government officials in hazmat suits trying to keep order. Speculation and conspiracy ran wild on the internet, particularly with no positive affirmation from the Ohioan government or wider Great Lakes government. One rampant conspiracy speculated this one of the ailments from the former United States Biological Weapons program. An accusation one could consider fair given the amount of disease testing on the American Public the late U.S. government conducted in multiple states.

There has always been suspicion that certain elements of the Old Federal government didn't go as quietly into the night as people think. There are constant rumors that parts of the Old Central Intelligence Agency didn't take the orders to decommission lightly, and instead formed a counter-insurgency network similar to the declassified plans for Operation Gladio. The unexplained anthrax attacks across the former United States responsible for killing hundreds have often been labeled as part of the '90s chaos, but more people in the Columbian government have proposed that these attacks were not organized by an existing external party. One that didn't owe allegiance to an external enemy, but an internal one nicknamed as the Lost Cause, a belief system ascribed to those who want to restore the United States by any means necessary.

Investigators in particular link the deadly Sarin gas attacks on the New York City subway system in 1995 to this group given the efficient deployment of the gas leading to the deaths of thousands. The rise in militant groups, formal tactics, and various conflicts that sparked around the '90s, and early '00s is to be given due credit to the Collapse of the United States, but there has always been speculation that at least parts of these groups had dedication from the former United States Armed Forces or Intelligence agencies. The speed, contagiousness, and horrific symptoms of the Cincinnati Flu has often been linked to the infamous Captain Tripps of the late Stephen King's magnum opus The Stand. A virus that originated from a government lab out west only to cause the apocalyptic end of the world and a battle of good and evil.

While the late author would probably wince at such a comparison given the Cincinnati Flu didn't end the world it killed millions globally. Televisions started seriously picking up on it in late January, and as cruise ships touring the Pacific started experiencing outbreaks and having to be quarantined. The Diamond Princess a transnational Cruise Ship got exposed to the Flu somewhere in Southeast Asia and had to quarantine in Okinawa. The Death toll on a ship that had 3,711 passengers and crew combined reached international media attention when it was revealed that 712 people on board the ship had died. It isn't hard to see how the population on the Okinawan Islands suddenly had to undergo quarantine as well. Domestically things in Columbia got worse with cruise ships being quarantined in New York Harbor, and New Jersey.

The symptoms of the disease mirror that of a hemorrhagic fever similar to the horror stories one hears of regionally locked diseases such as Ebola. The victims' necks swelled up like balloons, blood exited from ears, eyes, noses, and mouths mixed with thick layers of spit and mucus. The most merciful deaths came from the victim's organs shutting down and them dying in an unconscious state. The fever itself was dangerous on its own without the other symptoms raising temperatures so fast it reduced victims to a hallucinatory stupor. The worst deaths came from those who choked on the bile coming forth from their mouths.

The disease began to spread rapidly across the American statelets, and by March 10th various republics within Columbia initiated quarantines, containments, and lockdowns. The National government followed suit. Classes were canceled, public events ended, and society began to erode in various ways with panic buying, looting, and fighting. The scenes portrayed in Cincinnati were enacted on a global scale. Particularly affected was New York City which had so many dead the morgues couldn't take them in, and a triage facility was set up in Central Park. The bodies grew so numerous that mass burials were forsaken in exchange for cremating the dead. By the end of the year, a million people within Columbia alone were dead and the number was so numerous it made grieving hard, because where could one begin?

The dead could be found all over the place as some chose to escape the quarantine of their home and start wandering. Many were found dead in parks, bathrooms, lounges, their favorite restaurants which had been closed, and anywhere they could go. In one macabre scene at St Patrick's Cathedral, hundreds of infected wandered there and simply prayed until they died. The Archbishop Dolan of the Cathedral refused to leave despite desperate pleas from health officials. He administered the last rites for the dying congregation and gave the Eucharist to those able to swallow. No one is exactly sure how the man survived while other faithful were dying in droves, but questions over the will of God aren't in the purview of this report.

The only real funeral rites that could happen were by Priests, Rabbis, and others who aided the body disposal teams on their way to the assigned crematorium sites. Online funerals with no body weren't a perfect substitute for the normal human grieving rituals, and we still see people dealing with complicated grief years after the fact. Archbishop Dolan, other surviving religious and civic leaders with the aid of National government money, and even money donated by Steak Tycoon Donald Trump has allowed the city to build a massive memorial garden. Here photos of the deceased are put up along with biographies by surviving relatives and friends to describe them so they aren't forgotten. The city hosts a memorial service in March yearly to allow for public grieving, but other places don't have this luxury yet.

Its thanks to healthcare workers, and others across the globe that this monstrous pandemic eventually ended and the disease seems to be fading into the dustbin of history. Its impact cannot be forgotten though. People who were infected, but survived either suffer from psychological trauma or more physical issues such as cardiovascular or respiratory issues. Others are plagued by narcolepsy or spend so much time sleeping that they become statues more than humans. Then there are a variety of neurological issues that aren't fully explored yet as well.

The Social cost is important to bring up here as well. Entire families died due to this pandemic and as such had no one to claim them and now they reside in communal Columbariums. Social groups across all strata were affected by the Flu discriminating against no one. There are even neighborhoods where the makeup has changed permanently due to survivors wanting to leave and find new lives elsewhere. Social support services are just now starting to be able to truly be the centers of community they were before the Pandemic. Nationwide Columbia suffered from four million deaths due to the Flu, and many survivors will never be normal again due to the Trauma they witnessed. There are some questions that need answering for us as a nation to truly start healing.

1) Where did this disease come from and spread so fast?
2) Why are its symptoms so atypical from the regular strains of the Flu?
3) What happened to the biological weapons reserve of the Former United States Biological Weapons Program?
4) The most important question that remains unanswered is: Are the Lost Cause the remnants of a dead government or a useful bogeyman?

Madrid is the proof, that extremist Islamism must be stopped by force

Over a hundred people dead, in Europe, innocent civilians guilty of nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Their blood on the streets of Madrid should be a waking up call for all the leaders of Europe, but in particular, for the leaders of Germany. Germany, a state built by the blood of the martyrs of 1848 and by the blood of brothers, used in the distant past to stand up for Unity, for Justice, and for Freedom. Was it not for freedom that we opposed the expansionism and imperialism of Moscow during the Second World War? Was it not for unity that the treacherous Prussian Junkers were destroyed? Was it not for justice that the people rose up to bring down the Fatherland Front? For too long has Germany been afraid of its own actions, too afraid of its guilt for having lost the war and for having lost Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary to communist oppression. Since the fall of the United States of America, it's been France that often alone, has tried to carry on the torch of freedom. All while our leaders in Vienna have invoked excuse after excuse not to get involved. The threat of the Red Army, overgrown budgets, concerns with the welfare state. We were all too happy to criticize France and the other European nations for their immigration policies, without properly helping our allies in their fight for freedom throughout the world. If there's anything that this attack has proven, is that Paris was right all along. In just a few hours, ISIS has killed more EU citizens than the Soviets have ever did. We can't, and we shouldn't focus solely on the enemy next to our homes, and forget the enemy abroad.

Germany must join France in taking a leading role in the fight against Islamic terrorism all over the world. As long as ISIS maintains power in the Sahel, as long as ISIS-affiliated groups are causing unrest in Egypt, Europe will never be safe.

Statement of the Imperial and Confederal Foreign Ministry

The German Empire condemns the terrorist attack in Madrid in the strongest terms. Chancellor Merz has already called Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in order to express his heartfelt condolences and the fact that the German people will stand together with their Spanish allies and the rest of the NATO member states in these dark and trying times. German intelligence services will fully coordinate their investigation and response with the other intelligence agencies of the alliance, in order to both investigate the origin of this attack and how it was planned and executed, and in order to prevent any more similar attacks from occurring elsewhere in Europe. The police, both confederal and local, and the counter-terrorist units of the Schutzgruppe 9 have been placed on alert and will ensure the safety of all our citizens.

Furthermore, after an emergency session of the Imperial and Confederal Government, it has been agreed upon that forces of the Imperial and Confederal Defense Force will join the French and other NATO forces in combating the ISIS forces in the Sahel, while respecting the territorial integrity of the states in the region, in order to better ensure the security of both Africa and Europe.

Germany to join Chinese-Led Intervention in Egypt

Earlier today, in a rather surprising move for foreign policy analysts, Alexander Schallenberg, the Foreign Minister of the German Empire, has announced that the German Empire will join the international coalition that has been organized by the Republic of China in order to support the legitimate government of Egypt. As such, Germany will join other powers the world over in supporting the Egyptian government in their struggle against rebels, particularly the Islamists, and in protecting the security of the maritime trade through the Suez Canal. This surprising move, coming a few days after Germany's first foreign military effort in years, is said to have been motivated in part by France's decision to join the coalition, but foreign experts seem to believe that this is also just another sign of the reversal of the German policy that has been caused by several factors over the past few years, including the recent Madrid attack and the Soviet efforts to destabilize the Sahel, which have been blamed by some for strengthening ISIS. This comes after years of debate within the ruling coalition, in which the Social Democratic Party has opposed such actions both due to their financial costs and due to believing that Germany should not be taking such a strong position in international affairs, a position that has clearly changed based on yesterday's comments of the SPD secretary.

While strongly condemned by die Linke and by Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, this change in government policy seems to have been regarded rather well by the people, even if we will have to wait for opinion polls to get a concrete example. It is believed that for many Germans, the attack in Madrid has hit a bit too close to home - after all, if the terrorists were able to hit Madrid, what would stop them from targeting Vienna first? Germany has historically been hesitant to accept immigrants from Africa and the Muslim world, a position that was in part, due to Germany's society, the strong influence of the Catholic and Lutheran Churches, and Germany's history with receiving Eastern European refugees. This hesitance has started to be exploited by far-right pundits who are trying to turn it into something more, but the Government has been quick to support the local Muslim community in Germany and to remind the people that extremists do not speak for the entire religion.

Regardless, while involvement in Egypt is going to be criticized both from within and from without due to the human rights record of the government there, it seems that unfortunately the options of Germany in the conflict there are limited. The Democratic Front, which would have been a natural target for cooperation by German diplomatic efforts, has from its founding contained both communist groups, and Islamist groups affiliated with ISIS - making any sort of cooperation or diplomatic intervention on Germany's behalf an impossibility. When questioned on the matter, the Foreign Minister has said that Germany's position might be reevaluated if the Democratic Front were to split from the communists and the Islamists, but that Germany will remain firmly committed to the efforts of the coalition and will not take any decisions by itself.

Further comments by the government seem to indicate a wider shift in German aims around the world. While historically, Germany was focused on maintaining security and stability just in Europe - serving as the primary shield against Soviet oppression, it seems that its efforts will change, starting with attempts to better support our French and Chinese allies throughout the world.

The Foreign Minister has echoed the claims of French Director Nicolas Lerne, in blaming the Soviet Union for the current situation. it is believed by many in the international community, that the Soviet supported coups in the Sahel and Soviet support for the Democratic Front have both led to a strengthening of ISIS, even though as of right now there are no confirmed reports of direct Soviet support for ISIS. In the words of the Foreign Minister himself, "The Soviet Union remains committed to spreading oppression and authoritarianism whether it goes. In Africa, it has destroyed the legitimate democratic governments of the states there and has weakened them in the fight against ISIS< using unscrupulous dictators and their personal interests in order to achieve their aims - a weaker Africa that the Soviet Union can exploit. It remains clear that Moscow is not content with exploiting and oppressing the people of Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania, and wishes to export its tyranny to Africa."
The German Foreign Ministry has also criticized the Roman Empire for its support of the Democratic Opposition, and has asked the democratic nations of the world to remain united in their resistance towards authoritarianism, be it communist or Islamist terror. It is believed that Germany will join French efforts to convince Spain and Italy to join this coalition, and to persuade the Romans to stop their vocal support for the rebels.

As part of an official announcement by the Imperial and Confederal Wehrmacht, the Imperial and Confederal Navy will send the Erzherzog-class destroyers SMS Erzherzog Ferdinand Max and SMS Erzherzog Albrecht, and the Kaiser Franz Joseph I-class destroyers SMS SMS Kaiser Franz Joseph I, SMS Kaiserin Elisabeth and SMS Kronprinz Rudolf to the Mediterranean, to join the French Richelieu Carrier Task Force.

What is the limit of the Soviet fight against democracy?

In the latest international scandal, a hacker and potential KGB agent has sold a series of false information to a Nordlandian news outlet with the clear purpose of influencing the elections in Nordland. The information sold by the hacker seems to be clearly designed to destabilize pro-democratic forces in Nordland and to embolden pro-Soviet forces, while also influencing the elections towards a result that is more desirable to Moscow. Part of this smokescreen created by the KGB are several instances which seek to directly implicate Germany - which continues to remain the greatest obsession of the Soviets, clearly because of the results of the Second World War and the ability of Germany to stop the Soviets from conquering all of Europe. Of course, ultimately the information has little to no actual evidence, and some of it is at the level of ridiculousness - like the claims that a member of the Norwegian government had slept with a German intelligence officer, something that seems to have come right from a James Bond movie, or the notion that Germany had supported entrepreneurs and politicians in Nordland with funds for a so called fund "for democratic values".

The German Government has sharply criticized this attempt by the Soviet Union to influence the elections of a democratic state, and has offered its support and collaboration to Nordland's government in combating fake data and Soviet internet disinformation tactics, something that Germany is already quite experienced at due to the past efforts of the KGB to interfere with the German public opinion through the use of fake news websites, bots, and so called "trolls".

Presidential Office
Nanjing, RoC
January 21st, 2024

The cameras zoomed in on President Zhang Zhong as he stood behind the podium in the Presidential Office. The flag of the Republic of China hung behind him, a symbol of the nation’s strength and resilience. His expression was serious, but there was a fire in his eyes, a reflection of the passion he felt for the message he was about to deliver. The audience before him, both in China and around the world, waited for his words with anticipation.

“My fellow citizens, and to all who cherish freedom around the world,”

“Today, I speak to you not just as the President of the Republic of China, but as a man who believes, above all else, in the God-given right of every human being to live in freedom. For decades, we have watched as the world has been divided—on one side, nations that embrace the light of liberty, and on the other, regimes that continue to uphold the darkness of communist oppression. Chief among these is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which stands as the largest and most enduring symbol of that oppression.”

Zhang’s voice grew stronger as he continued, his gaze steady as he looked directly into the camera.

“Communism, at its core, promises equality, justice, and prosperity, but what it delivers is the oppression of the soul. In the USSR and its satellite states, we see a system that has stripped away the dignity of the individual, replaced the truth with state propaganda, and crushed the human spirit under the weight of fear and control. The Soviet regime, like all communist regimes, exists not to uplift its people but to control them, to keep them shackled in a system that denies their most fundamental rights.”

He paused, his expression reflecting the gravity of his words.

“We know all too well the price of communism. The gulags of Siberia, the silencing of dissidents, the forced labor camps, the endless surveillance of the state—all of these are not just memories of the past but the present reality for millions living under Soviet rule. These atrocities are not accidents; they are the inevitable outcome of a worldview that denies the value of the individual and places the state above all else.”

Zhang leaned forward slightly, his voice softening as he addressed the people living under oppression in the Soviet Union and other communist regimes.

“To those who live under these regimes today—whether in the Soviet Union, in Cuba, or elsewhere—I say to you: we see your suffering. The world may seem silent, but we have not forgotten you. Your desire to be free is a flame that cannot be extinguished, and one day, that flame will burn brightly, just as it has in many nations before.”

He took a moment to let the message sink in, then spoke with renewed passion.

“It is in the nature of man, placed in our hearts by God Himself, to seek freedom. Freedom is not a privilege granted by governments; it is a right granted by God Almighty. And no regime, no ideology, no amount of oppression can erase that fundamental truth. We are born free, and we yearn to live free, to speak our minds, to create, to worship, and to pursue the life we dream of.”

His voice grew firmer, embodying the strength of his convictions.

“In the Republic of China, we have seen the power of freedom and democracy. Our people have thrived because we reject the lies of communism and embrace the truth that all men are created equal. Our prosperity, our strength, and our unity are the fruits of a system that values individual liberty above all else. And we, as a nation, stand ready to help those still shackled by the chains of oppression. We stand as an example of what is possible when a people are free to live according to their conscience, free to pursue their dreams, and free to worship God.”

Zhang took a breath, his voice shifting to one of hope and determination.

“To the free nations of the world, I say this: we must not be silent. The Soviet Union remains the greatest symbol of communism and of the oppression that comes with it. But the fight against communism is not over. We must stand united in our defense of freedom and human dignity. We must support those who seek liberty, whether in small, isolated movements or in mass uprisings. We cannot allow the chains of oppression to tighten around the hearts and minds of the next generation.”

At this moment, Zhang’s tone softened but remained firm, signaling the importance of the next part of his message.

“But let me also be clear: we do not seek war. The Republic of China does not desire conflict with the Soviet Union or any other communist state. Instead, we extend a hand of dialogue and diplomacy, for it is not through violence that we will secure freedom, but through the strength of our ideals. We believe that the power of truth, justice, and liberty will ultimately triumph over tyranny. These are values that no wall, no regime, no system of oppression can suppress forever.”

He paused for emphasis, his eyes narrowing with resolve.

“Change, lasting change, comes not from the barrel of a gun, but from the hearts of men. As we have seen throughout history, the will of the people to be free cannot be crushed indefinitely. So, while we must remain strong and vigilant, prepared to defend ourselves and our allies, we must also pursue peaceful solutions, using the power of ideas and the appeal of freedom to bring about change.”

Zhang raised his hand, his voice now filled with emotion.

“I believe, with all my heart, that the day will come when the walls of the Soviet Union and all other communist regimes crumble. The day will come when every man and woman, from the farthest corners of Siberia to the smallest villages in Cuba, will taste the sweetness of freedom. And when that day comes, it will not be because of armies or governments, but because the human spirit cannot and will not be contained. For where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Zhang smiled softly, a look of hope in his eyes as he closed the speech.

“Let us continue to fight for the freedom of all mankind. Let us pray for those who suffer under tyranny. And let us always remember that, in the end, freedom prevails because God is with us, and He desires that all His children live in liberty.

May God bless the Republic of China, and may God bless all who seek freedom.”
Pro: America, guns, freedom, democracy, military, Trump, conservatism, Israel, capitalism, state rights.

Izvestia - Reports of Soviets of Peoples' Deputies of the USSR

FRENCH INTELLIGENCE SERVICE BRAZENLY AND BIZARRELY ACCUSES SOVIET UNION OF SUPPORTING JIHADIST TERROR

In an unexpected and unusual remark in front of the French National Assembly Director Nicolas Lerner of the French Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) accused the Soviet Union of supporting the "Islamic State" in Africa based on 'unconfirmed' reports'. This is an especially strange thing for a high ranking government official to declare considering Soviet allies are in active conflict with the terrorist organization and daily the Soviet Armed Forces work to aid them in destroying that organization. Stranger still, we must question what the nature of these "unconfirmed" reports are - is it the case that any tabloid in Paris can produce a 'report' alleging Soviet activity in a foreign state and the DGSE will give it enough credibility for its director to raise them in front of the national legislature? Regardless of whatever process led to Director Lerner making such an absurd claim the Soviet Embassy in Paris issued a diplomatic protest directed against the claims and demanding that the French government clearly retract them. The USSR is a country which has been attacked many times by criminal terrorism and leads the fight against it. Nearly thirty thousand Soviet soldiers died in Afghanistan to defeat the precursors of ISIS and thousands of civilians in the Soviet Union have also been killed as a result of terrorist actions. It is impossible for the Soviet people to not take an accusation that they have actually supported this anywhere as a great insult. How can Lerner make his claims without making a fool of himself and of France? Any objective observer can see that this ridiculous lie has been popularized in France to support a policy that Paris aimed to carry out regardless - that is the destabilization and destruction of sovereign governments in Africa in the name of fighting terrorism. The French have actually accused the Soviet Union of that which they themselves are guilty of.

SOVIET NAVY TO DISPATCH ADDITIONAL SHIPS TO EGYPT SECURITY FORCE TO OPPOSE NATO ENCIRCLEMENT STRATEGY

Following the dispatch of a large number of NATO naval forces to Egypt, the Soviet government has made public its intention to deploy additional naval forces in the area drawn from the Black Sea Fleet. The surface force of two cruisers and three destroyers is led by the Slava II class cruiser Leningrad and there is a submarine force of six Varshavyanka (known in the west as "Improved Kilo") submarines attached. While the Soviet Black Sea fleet is constrained by geography and this force is not a match for the NATO ships in the area, it is a formidable task force capable of indicating to NATO that the Soviet Union views Egypt as a vital strategic interest and not as a state which NATO can or should incorporate into its sphere of influence. NATO, which is the successor to the Anti-Comintern pact and military alliance which began the most devastating war in human history against the Soviet Union in 1941, has always considered its primary role to be aggressive war against the USSR. NATO intervention in Egypt is not done to oppose terrorism, but instead to enhance the alliance's strategic position against the USSR for the purposes of aggression. Despite cooler heads prevailing in the decades after the collapse of the USA in large part Germany has never given up its goals of aggressive war against the Soviet Union. Even today when the Bucharest Pact maintains a military, economic, and technological advantage over NATO the profoundly reactionary German establishment continues on the pointless path of hostility. The German Navy's dispatch of their entire destroyer force to Egypt is not only an act directed against the USSR with minimal anti-terror utility but also actually greatly damaging to Germany's security considering the diversion of naval resources away from Germany that it represents. As long as the German Empire follows the destructive and failed policy of military competition and pressure against the Soviet Union it will weaken both itself and undermine its own stated goals of European security.

OPERATION SANDSTORM - KAZAKHSTAN - February 1st, 2024

Ivan and Sergei let themselves through the meeting room's simple dark door. The two men took their seats at a long table with four military men. Two wore army uniforms, one was from navy, another was from the air force, and the last was in an Egyptian uniform.

One of the men from the army - an older man with a bald head and prominent eyebrows that sat over slightly droopy eyes - began the meeting.

“Now that our friends from the KGB are here we can finally begin. We all know who they are, but I do not believe all of us have met as a group before. For those who are unfamiliar I am General Sergey Surovikin. My comrade here-“ He gestured to the more junior army officer, a man in his early thirties with strong side burns and a well trimmed mustache. “Is Lieutenant Colonel Alexi Vorobev, who will be advising our Egyptian friends on the ground.”

Surovikin gestured to the lonely Egyptian, who then began to introduce himself in heavily accented Russian. “I have met some of you before-“ He glanced at Ivan and Sergei. “But for those I have not, I am Colonel Sharad Niazi - I will be leading the force once it arrives in Egypt.”

The last officer, a man with dark but not quite black brown hair combed back over his head and sharp features, introduced himself. "I am First Rank Captain Rodion Dmitriev. I am in charge of the naval component of this project."

Ivan and Sergei did not introduce themselves. Ivan simply began the meeting "It is good to have all of you together. General Surovkin, let us begin.”

Surovikin nodded, and stood up. He turned on a projector at one end of the table and he pulled down a white screen from where it was suspended from the ceiling against the wall. He stood near a desktop computer set up on its own table at the front of the room. A moment later it was illuminated with a military map of the Egyptian civil war dated only yesterday.

“As you can see-“ The general started. “The civil war continues in favor of the government. Rebel forces made a stand at Aswan last month and suffered greatly for it. NATO aid will only accelerate the government victory. However, the underlying causes of this civil war remain and recent battlefield victories have in our view done little to restore the Sisi government’s legitimacy or shatter the rebels.”

He looked at Ivan and Sergei. Ivan answered the silent question. “We have made a number of connections with members of the military establishment dissatisfied with President Sisi’s leadership. We estimate that a sufficient number of supporters can be reached and prepared to attempt to remove Sisi in six to eight months.”

Ivan glanced to Niazi. “The Colonel can offer more details.”

The slightly nervous Egyptian answered. “Yes. It will take us approximately that long to finish training the men to an acceptable standard as well. We are also working to recruit more men via our political organizations within Egypt and agents in refugee organizations, although that has proven challenging.”

“And your own training?” Vorobev interjected. “Are you and your staff capable of leading without direct soviet supervision when deployed?”

Niazi nodded. “I am a graduate of the Egyptian Military College and the staff I have been able to put together is mostly made of my associates from my time in the Egyptian military just before the war. Some of them are former democratic front leftists. All have been familiarized with Soviet practice. I’m sure our mutual friends-” He glanced at Ivan and Sergei. “-Have told you that you can expect to inspect my men for yourself by next week.”

Vorobev nodded, but a slight displeasure remained on his face. “And how many men will you have ready for Operation Sandstorm?”

“Ten thousand at least, at least four Soviet style regiments. About two thousand are from Egyptian political organizations, four from recruitment done in Egypt since the start of the war, and four thousand from military age refugees who we were able to recruit with payment and political agitation.” Niazi answered.

“All of which have had their reliability enhanced with political education.” Added Sergei.

Surovikin, who still stood at the front of the room, gestured at the map. “All concerns about reliability and recruitment can be addressed at their own pace. At the moment our objective is preparation for insertion into Egypt. There are a number of approaches to this. The navy solution is our most desirable option. Captain Dimitriev?”

The Captain shuffled through a few documents on the table in front of him. He began to read off one. “The use of up to ten roll on-roll off ferries is possible for the transport of Force A. Force A must be delivered to aid force B in a safe port under the cover of coastal missile defenses and friendly naval support. Transport can take place piecemeal to a base in Syria or Libya before transport to Egypt. However it is advised that transport be done as quickly and as direct as possible due to potential NATO surveillance.” Dimitriev looked up at the other officers. Sergei and Vorobev were scribbling down notes.

“The Navy believes NATO could establish a naval blockade or otherwise make this program difficult.“ The Captain went on. “In six months the situation may be radically different even though we will have more ships in the region by then. We have prepared a number of backup plans in cooperation with the KGB.”

Ivan cleared his throat. “Our two back up plans rely on transporting military equipment and personnel in smaller and separate packages. Personnel can enter Egypt almost as legitimate passengers, equipment can be brought in by sea, potentially on a long route from Vladivostok to the Red Sea coast or by a port we control in smaller shipments. We believe naval security and the success of the coup and therefore the establishment of Force B is essential for any significant heavy equipment aid. If the coup fails to take over important cities in Egypt-“ Ivan gestured to the Nile Delta on the projected map. “-Then we will have a serious challenge ensuring the success of Sandstorm.”

“What about information security?” Surovikin questioned.

Sergei set his pencil down. “All communication in and out of the training base in Kazakhstan is controlled by the KGB. NATO will only know we intend to move military equipment when they notice the accumulation of vehicles and containers in Sevastopol port. Our primary problem is physical security.”

Ivan finished Sergei’s thought. “Which is dependent on Force B. Our alternative if Force B fails is to move men in by land, mainly through Sudan in small groups. Vehicles and equipment can also be moved by truck, but accumulating a large amount of vehicles will be difficult. Tanks or large surface to air missile launchers will be impossible to move in except by sea.”

“It is not ideal. But these are back ups that will prevent a complete loss of the program if Force B fails. Dimitriev and our KGB friends will find more alternatives if we need them.” Concluded Surovikin. A few voices of agreement rose around the table.

Vorobev looked up from his notes at Ivan and Sergei. “And what exactly is the status of Force B?”

Sergei glanced down at a report in front of him “It is being built up on schedule. A NATO infestation has complicated it, but it is proceeding well. We are making contact with a number of networks in the county which have been dissatisfied with Sisi for one time, to give them a sales pitch. We will discuss more concrete information when it becomes available.” He finished. Vorobev nodded and wrote something down.

The General took control of the discussion. “Now if there are no further questions about the specifics we can discuss details. The Army thinks Sisi has been strengthened by NATO support in only a few key areas.” Surovikin changed the slide on the computer, and the meeting went on.

NORTHERN BALANCE

It is not a surprise that the Soviet Union would view the result of Nordland's elections as a vital strategic interest. Controlling the route out of the Baltic and exerting enormous influence in the Arctic ocean there is perhaps no other neutral country which could be as great a blessing to the USSR if it aligned with it, or a curse if it chose to go in the direction of NATO. The results of Nordland's extremely competitive elections therefore affect far more than just the confederacy of Nordic countries. Instead, it represents a shift in the balance of European power that either must be prevented from occurring or must benefit the Soviet Union. The recent intervention by a Soviet sympathizer in Nordland was clumsily executed but did achieve its objective of restoring the Labor Party's electoral balance with the centrists. To further the fortunes of the pro-Soviet Labor party or in fact any not anti-soviet force in Nordland requires a much more subtle type of intervention and influence operation.

While in many countries associations for good relations with the USSR exist to organize civil society support for Soviet diplomacy, the use of such an organization in the modern age is quite different from the way it was used during the cold war. The modern "Nordland-USSR Friendship Association" is not there only to mobilize communist or left wing support for Soviet foreign policy. Instead it in large part focuses on gaining the support and trust of local elites. In a liberal democracy where power is concentrated on those with the money and connections to manipulate public opinion it is beneficial to provide them with an economic interest in maintaining relations with the USSR.

That being said, GOSPLAN was not receptive to the Foreign Ministry and KGB's insentience on trade as a form of foreign influence. GOSPLAN's director only reluctantly followed their instructions after receiving orders from Chairman Lukashenko. The new plan for trade with Nordland was to prioritize firms which were controlled by pro-soviet or neutral economic interests. Long term contracts would be maintained, but over the course of a month or so Nordland's businessmen involved in foreign trade would discover that their employers political leanings were a significant factor in the Soviet Union's choice of trade partner. This way in an entirely legal way the economic might of the Soviet Union could be mobilized to support Nordland's Labor Party - and potentially impact the flow of donations to its centrist rivals.
V. STALIN

We have had enough of the abuses of the Soviet Union. My opinion is that there can be no negotiations with the USSR until they return the criminal and traitor to Norway Andes Niisar. And in order to avoid a new wave of slander, we need to pass a law on foreign agents. Whoever agrees with both of my theses - go to the Soviet embassy of all the Commonwealth countries and demand the extradition of Niisar

Our traitors who sold out the interests of our country should vegetate in Norwegian dungeons and not walk around free. And I, like many in the Northern Resistance, do not agree that we should negotiate de-escalation with the USSR until they return our traitor, Niisar. And so that they don’t do it again, write “foreign agent” on the foreheads of all the communist hangers-on. This is the only way we can protect Norlan neutrality, freedom and democracy. God and the blood of our ancestors are with us. Everyone come out to the USSR embassy Norwegian 5 p.m., take thermoses with tea, sandwiches and tents, we will not leave until we see that the traitor of the nation, Niisar, is being led out of the embassy.

NORDWEST REASONING
THE STORY OF MR. NEUTRALITY

Haakon Christian, who has consolidated his power since 2002 and become an irreplaceable symbol of Nordland neutrality, once started out as an ordinary conservative-minded Norwegian professor at the University of Oslo, teaching students geoeconomics. He was then known for his scientific monographs "Economic Nationalism as the Extreme Stage of Capitalism" in 1996 and "Economic Neutrality" in 1997. That same year, under the patronage of the leader of the National Unity Party, Frederik Horndenger, he joined the party and already in 1999 became an economic adviser to the Norwegian Storting. There, his economic ideas were appreciated by the King of Norway, Harold V, who began to push him for the post of head of the Nordland Coordination Council in place of the unpopular General Forgend. In 2002, the kings of Norway, Sweden and Denmark approved his candidacy, but the Advisory Council considered the young Haakon too conservative and that he could damage the Nordland doctrine of "neutrality", so the official approval of the Advisory Council came only in 2003. Haakon was already criticizing the doctrine, believing that it strongly ties the hands of Nordland's foreign policy potential and does not allow the economy to develop, leaving it in stagnation. Therefore, according to his project, a new geopolitical pole was created on the basis of Nordland. In March 2004, a diplomatic conflict occurred due to pro-Nordland protests in Finland. Haakon then assembled the Advisory Council and tried to push through it the idea of supporting the protesters both diplomatically and materially, but the Council refused numerous proposals. In 2006, he was forced to follow the general opinion of the Advisory Council and stop the escalation with the USSR. This was called the "great thaw". After 2008, a reassessment of political values began, but Haakon, despite this, decided not to take an active part in it, remaining behind the scenes. Then, due to Haakon's tactics of "not reacting to minor provocations from any of the countries," he was called "Mr. Neutrality." However, after 2016, he actively began to push the idea of a single Norland army and a single police force, but still, to no avail. And only by the time of the epidemic, his ideas finally began to bear fruit. Today's conflict is only the result of Haakon Christian's inevitable idea of "revise the doctrine of neutrality," which clearly went against the interests of the Soviet Union, which could at any time get a potential enemy on the northern border. However, today's conflict is fundamentally different from the previous one in that most of the advisory council is inclined to Haakon's ideas, and there are not many ardent supporters of neutrality left on the council. And the conflict with the USSR helps Haakon's supporters get arguments in favor of their ideas.

RIPS ON THE WATER OF SOVIET INTERVENTION

Soviet interference in the Nordland elections has greatly launched political processes in the country. We learned from a source in the Norwegian Ministry of Defense that Haakob Christian has formed a coordination naval center of the Commonwealth to prepare for naval exercises in the Baltic Sea by the navies of the Kingdom of Sweden, the Kingdom of Norway and the Kingdom of Denmark. Of course, if the information is true, this cannot be called an act of creating a full-fledged Nordland fleet, but we see that Haakon is making gradual progress in this direction. In fact, the exercises themselves can throw Nordland from a state of "economic neutrality" to "economic nationalism". However, no less interesting processes have begun in the pre-election field, suddenly the neo-Nazi movement "Northern Resistance Movement" announced that it is "preparing documents for participation in the elections." Many analysts do not see any prospects for their participation in the elections, believing that they will not be able to cross the electoral barrier. However, in parallel, a number of Trotskyist and social democratic movements in Norway, Denmark and Sweden united into the "Nordland People's Front" to participate in the elections. Despite the fact that they also have little chance in the elections, analysts set the bar at 5-7%, but they are capable of pulling votes from a stronger rival - the Labor Party. Some even believe that this is a cunning response to the interference from Hakkon. The "large centrist coalition" after the interference held a press conference in which it ridiculed all the arguments of the "Soviet KGB" in its address, considering it an obvious falsification with the aim of destabilizing the elections. Despite the fact that this press conference did not strengthen the "large centrist bloc", it strengthened its rating at today's bar of 38% (the opposition bloc has 39%). After the press conference, a rally of the Northern Way was held at the USSR embassy, in which Sven stated that “he was offended that the USSR ","considered Scandinavia our puppet, then we are making claims to Finland and Karelia."

President Macron Addresses International Concerns Over Egypt Intervention:

Paris, January 26th - In a press conference yesterday addressing recent international developments, President Macron sought to reassure France's Roman allies in the wake of the coalition support for the Egyptian government.

Answering a question about the Roman Empress's recent speech, President Macron told reporters, "I understand Roman concerns regarding the coalition intervention in Egypt, given the events that have unfolded over the course of the conflict. It is alright and normal for allies to disagree on matters. I have been assured by relevant parties that Egyptian government conduct in this war has fallen within international norms, and it will continue to do so. But I see where the Romans are coming from, and I appreciate their flexibility on this issue."

"Our coalition is hoping that our involvement will bring a speedy end to the war, and influence actors to remain within the scope of international law." Macron continued. "This will not become a 'forever war.'"

When asked by a reporter about Soviet involvement and Soviet calls for UN action, Macron appeared receptive, although he stated he wasn't sure if there would be a Security Council Resolution. "The wording of Soviet proposals ignores the nature of the conflict as a counter-terrorism operation by the legitimate Egyptian Government. The Soviets seek to legitimize the 'Democratic' Opposition and put them on equal footing with the Egyptian Government, which is unacceptable." Macron vowed that France would utilize its veto in the Security Council, "if requested by the Egyptian government." He also mused a French proposal which would condemn the Democratic Front and commit UN forces against terrorist elements.

Macron dubbed the Soviet actions as "insincere," claiming that the Soviets were only interested in the continued destabilization of the region and furthering their own interests.

French Navy to Deploy Additional Units to Support NATO Task Force, Egyptian Government:

Paris, January 31st - Just days after the Richelieu Carrier Task Force arrived off the coast of Egypt, reportedly to be soon joined by a powerful fleet of 5 German destroyers, the French Navy is reporting that it is preparing a second deployment to bolster the Task Force. The move comes after the Soviet Union too announced a second deployment of a sizable task force including two cruisers, three destroyers, and six conventional attack submarines, complementing their frigate and two patrol ships already in the region.

The latest French deployment is reported to be centered around the older carrier Foch, escorted by the destroyers Alsace and Languedoc, frigates Duquesne and Guépratte, nuclear attack submarine Améthyste, the patrol boats Flamant and Seine, the minesweeper Lyre, the spy ship Dupuy de Lôme, and supported by the oiler Marne.

The sizable force is expected to join the Task Force within two weeks, with ships being drawn from a number of ports across France. Most notable is the deployment of the Foch, having been modernized and upgraded last in 2018 and having undergone extensive refit to remain in service. Considered as a 'reserve' carrier, the deployment marks the first time the older ship will see combat since its modernization.

A spokesperson with the Navy denied speculation that the deployment was in response to the Soviet one, noting, "As the NATO Task Force has arrived off the coast of Egypt, we have noted several gaps in our capabilities that this deployment will patch. While I cannot go into detail for operational security reasons, the Foch will provide essential air support to the Task Force, while other vessels are being deployed to assist in patrol and intelligence gathering roles. While the Soviet deployment is an unnecessary and escalatory step, we are not concerned at all by their presence, and expect them to act in accordance with international law to mitigate the risk posed by terror entities to international shipping in the region."

The spokesperson was quick to reiterate, "Our deployment of naval forces is in support of coalition air operations, and not directed towards the Soviet force. We are not seeking a naval build-up in the region."

However Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu did not hesitate to mince words warning, "We will own the escalation ladder. If the Soviet Union continues to unilaterally build-up its naval forces around Egypt, posing a threat to coalition forces and the security of the Egyptian coast, we are prepared to implement measures that will change the equation in the region. Let me be clear, nothing about the Soviet deployment is at all for the purpose of protecting the Suez Canal or even for counter-insurgency purposes. France has and is continuing to deploy patrol ships. Is a cruiser going to patrol the Suez Canal? No. Is a cruiser or destroyer meant to engage or stop small fast pirate or insurgent craft? No. Can a submarine patrol for smugglers? No. It is just a brazen act of intimidation and hostility against the West and Egypt."

After his comments to the National Assembly sparked outrage in the Soviet Union in the past week, DGSE Director Lerner mused today to the press, "The Soviet Union is engaging in tactics to draw away NATO and coalition resources from the real fight - the fight against ISIS. What we are seeing is a serious and concentrated effort by the Soviets to protect their proxy forces in Africa and the Middle East, by shielding the Islamic State to allow them to rebuild and regroup. This is the Soviet Union saying: 'If you attack ISIS, we are prepared to defend them.' France is ready to call their bluff. We will defend our people and our allies, and we will never let terrorism win."

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reported that it had summoned the Soviet Ambassador to explain the recent naval deployment, and to urge de-escalation in the region.

Protests in Paris Over Islamophobia and Egypt Conflict:

Paris, February 3rd - A group of around 2,000 protesters peacefully marched in the streets of Paris yesterday towards the Place de la Republique, chanting slogans against the rise of Islamophobia across France in the wake of recent terror attacks and the escalation of the civil war in Egypt. France, a country home to a large Muslim community, has seen a spike in anti-Islam hate over the past few weeks as the nation mourns the terror attacks on Spain, which saw several French citizens injured or killed in Madrid.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told reporters that the protest was conducted in an "orderly fashion," noting efforts by the police to prevent any violence or disturbances.

Richelieu Carrier Task Force
50 Miles off the Coast of Dumyat, Egypt
January 27, 2024
11 AM

"Messieurs, thank you for attending this briefing on such short notice." said Rear Admiral Marc Aussedat as he stood at the front of the packed pilot briefing room aboard the Richelieu. "I know you all have been itching for action, as I am told a few of you have been buzzing the Soviet and Norlandish fleet on a constant basis." he paused with a slight smile, remembering some of his own encounters harassing Soviet forces at the height of the Cold War.

"But soon, you will be too busy to be bothering our Russian friends. At least, not on a regular basis... I have received orders from Paris that the mission has changed. In coordination with Chinese and coalition forces, we will be launching direct offensive strikes against terror targets in Egypt." Aussedat gestured to a map of the Sinai. "The primary targets of our task force will be located in the Sinai, while we will also provide support to the Chinese who will be operating against Upper Egypt. I have been directed to limit our targeting to Islamic State-affiliated forces, and highly important strategic locations belonging to the Democratic Front."

Aussedat waved to one of his aides to show an image on the projector. "This here is Bir Gifgafa Airfield in central Sinai, captured earlier last year by the Democratic Front. While a majority of the operational military and civilian aircraft located at the airbase was either evacuated or destroyed, we have received intelligence confirming the presence of armed drones at the base." The projector flicked to a new image, zoomed in to show the parked drones. "Our intelligence suggests that these are Roman TB2 drones. And you heard that right. Roman. We aren't quite sure how they got here, but I can tell you that they are potent systems that Paris does not want being used against coalition forces. We are skeptical if the insurgents know how to use them - and the DGSE suspects that after international pressure, the Romans pulled any support they were providing for them. But we do not want to be taking any chances."

The slides changed again, to a map of the Sinai with targets designated. "The coalition, as well as the Egyptian government, does not want any more foreign systems finding their way into the Sinai. That's why later tonight, your first targets will be launching a series of strikes against all the major airports in the Sinai. Your primary targets are as follows: Bir Gifgafa, Taba, El Arish, El Gora, and Bir El-Tamada. A second wave will hit Abu Rudeis, El Tor, St. Catherine, and Sharm El Sheikh."

He continued, "Our strikes will be limited. Aside from the drones, air-defense, and warehouses located near the airports suspected of containing arms, you will only be cratering the runways. We want them temporarily out of commission, not leveled. Intelligence suggest that you will not be encountering any major resistance, given that the enemy lacks fighter aircraft of their own and because the small number of air defense systems they managed to capture are only SHORAD or have been damaged by previous strikes... SEAD operations will be launched before your strikes, so the primary threat you will face will be only be small arms and MANPADS."

"But that doesn't mean you should get cocky. Stay alert. We don't know if the Romans are still helping them, or if they have capabilities we don't know about, especially out of Upper Egypt. Be vigilant and be safe. Good luck."

A E-2C Hawkeye soared overhead the Task Force, acting as the eye in the sky as the first Dassault Rafale Ms took off from the carrier. These 6 fighters would perform the SEAD component of the mission, each armed with four AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles and two MICA EM air to air missiles. Soon they would be joined by 24 more Rafales, representing the entire complement of fighters aboard the carrier. 4 would provide CAP, armed with full air-superiority loadouts with two Meteors and four MICA EMs each, ready to escort the strike package. The strike package would consist of the other 20 jets, with half armed with 12 Durandal anti-runway bombs, six carrying four 125 kg AASM Hammers and two MICA EMs, and four carrying two AS-30s and two MICA EMs.

Racing over the Sinai, the SEAD fighters would take the lead, ready to fire if they were illuminated by enemy radar. Breaking off to conduct their separate attacks, four Rafales headed north, with their targets at the El-Arish airport and El-Gora airport being the closest. Diving low, two Rafales would target each airport, dropping their Durandals via parachute before swooping up to observe the many flashes of light on the ground as the two dozen bombs would penetrate and crater each of the runways.

The same would occur a short while later at Bir Gifgafa airbase and Bir El-Tamada airfield, with two Durandal-armed fighters hitting each airport. But this time, it was followed-up in quick succession with two dozen precision-guided AASM Hammers targeting the TB2 drones, several inoperable airframes, warehouses suspected of holding weapons, and other aircraft shelters at Bir Gifgafa. The eight AS-30s would also be employed against the airbase, using their large payload and penetrating warheads to hit the concrete aircraft shelters and underground arms bunkers.

Further away, two jets would drop their Durandals on Taba airport, cratering the runway before turning back for the carrier.

Just 3 hours later, at 12 AM, the 30 jets plus the AEW aircraft were back in action, refueled and rearmed to strike the remaining four targets. The first wave had gone without a hitch, but now the element of surprise was up and more precautions would be taken. This time 6 Rafales would perform CAP in conjunction with the 6 Rafales performing SEAD, as the 18 other jets would carry out the strikes.

Eight Durandal-armed Rafales would crater the runways of the four airbases, while the 10 other fighters carried 125 kg and 250 kg AASM Hammers, employed against warehouses around St. Catherine and several abandoned commercial or transport air frames around the airports.

Strikes complete, the fighters would race back to the carriers without incident; pilots ready for their debrief and rest before further air operations would be mounted the next day against militant positions around Mount Helal.

French Embassy in Egypt
Cairo, Egypt
February 2, 2024

For over 100 years, France had maintained a powerful grip on Africa, with its various intelligence services playing a key role in it. In recent times, France's hold influence begun to slip, but the same could not be said of the DGSE's presence. With former colonies revolting against the French presence and terror on the rise, the DGSE was hard at work all across Africa, arranging coup plots, fighting off coup plots before they could occur, and general intelligence gathering.

So as Egypt descended into chaos even before the civil war, the small DGSE office in Cairo was hard at work. And over the past few months, it had only continued to grow, aimed at keeping tabs on the rising threat of Islamic terror. Their main office was located on the third floor of the French Embassy, whose job was mainly pushing paper keeping tabs on those affiliated on Islamic terrorism, Muslim Brotherhood, and the rising Democratic Front. But recently, their mission had begun to change.

In the intelligence world, this was as obvious as it got. In the past few months since the start of the war, an unusually high number of Budapest Pact citizens were coming into Egypt. That on its own would not have been enough to raise any alarm bells, but new Soviet arms coming into Egypt did. And most curious to the DGSE, local informants had reported that the Soviets were recruiting young Egyptian men for something.

That was the subject of interest at the moment, beyond the list of ISIS targets the Navy wanted and the regular monitoring of radical Islamists. Section Chief Adam Bernard, or officially Deputy Attache for Language and Cultural Affairs Henri Auclair, leaned back into his chair as he sat in his office, watching the busy street below.

There was a knock at the door, and a young agent burst in, hands full of files and and with a grin on his face. "Sir, I have something I think you would like to see."

"What is it, Agent Zagré? More arms deals? As I said, we are in no position to stop them." replied Bernard.

"That's what I thought at first sir, but I believe I have stumbled onto something of high interest." said the young man.

"Go on then."

Agent Zagré held out the file, showing a flight passenger list and separate images of two individuals. "I stumbled upon something interesting looking into these two individuals. We thought they were arms dealers, the way they came in and left in such a quick time period. Secure the quick sale, and leave. But no. I had some of our local informants ask around about them, see what they were selling. One of our guys chatted it up with some of his Egyptian Army friends, and one of the guys said that there's this story going around; 'two Russian big shots' came into town to talk to two high ranking Army commanders. One of the soldiers providing their escort said they offered the commanders the most gold he's ever seen in his life."

Bernard raised an eyebrow. "Now that's curious. But it could just be a bribe to look the other way or to sell off their surplus arms. Did your man get what it was for?"

"My informant didn't know. He didn't want to press them too much, to look suspicious. He got the gist that it wasn't for arms though... 'something bigger' as he said. But he got the name of one of the guards, and of the Colonels. Colonel Abbas Azizi and Colonel Bashar Muradi." replied Zagré.

Bernard gave a slight grin - this was probably the most interesting item that had come across his desk in the past month. "Then I suppose our next step is to talk to them."
