Ships 101: A Large Boat Discussion Thread

Postby Beliras » Mon Sep 23, 2024 8:43 am

P.S. If you're thinking the other kind of ships (what the-), then you made the wrong choice. Otherwise, ship fans (who mostly came from Titanic like me), welcome! I hope you're prepared for an unforgettable discussion!

Ships are large boats that usually have a purpose surrounding them, e.g. The Costa Fascinosa is a cruise ship, meaning it takes cruises. Ships always existed as boats do, they were created in the same time that boats were first modernizing. Warships, like the Bismarck, not to be confused with the other Bismarcks, are ships designed for only one purpose: Naval weapons. Ships do sink every now and then, and they also get scrapped every now and then, but some, like the Queen Mary, are preserved to use for another purpose. So, let's share some shipshape, pun intended, discussions about ships, as they are!

Fathom and Indigo has to be my all time fav. All though Qibli-Moon, Whiteout-Thoughtful, and Blue-Cricket are great too. I'm not too sure about other series but they are all usually good at pulling them off.

Duck shaped pedal boats are also an instant classic.

We recently finished a new teakwood deck for the USS Alabama, a favorite museum ship of mine that I only have to drive down four/fifths a state to visit.
The USS Texas is very cool as a much older Dreadnought era class ship.
All that steel with such primitive electrical and mechanical accoutrement is like postmodern steampunk to me.

Have a look at the Thaon di Revel class.
Classified as a multirole patrol boat, packs the punch of a destroyer.

Pretty much what a modern interdictor should be.
Perfect shore guard vessel that makes a good picket in a pinch, too, for squadron and fleet action.

Too sad that renovations have STILL not been finished yet.
I was on a quest to get a memorbillia from each museum ship. I only have the following:
Piece of deck from Mighty Mo
A thermos and a sticker of Vicky from the Iowa
And a Azur Lane Hornet II sticker from the Hornet II (CV-12)
NS stats and Policies were sent to die in the commie genocide

Alabama doesn’t do in a year what it can do in ten.
The thermos alone is a niiice item.
Too bad about the Missouri.

Amazing how angry the waters can get on those lakes.
Still, the rolls an aircraft carrier has to navigate on an open sea can pitch aircraft off their decks.
Especially ones being moved, because air ops continue on through some pretty heavy seas.

Yeah, an American carrier group can burn down the average country within range of cruise missiles and fighter bombers.

While Carriers superseded Battleships as the premier platform for Naval Superiority and force projection, is it really true to say they were made outright obsolete by them? I always assumed that it was the advent of Guided Missiles that made them obsolete.

Fundamentally, yes, it makes sense to say that the carrier obsoleted the battleship. The carrier replaced the battleship in all of its roles before guided surface-to-surface missiles became available. The first Soviet SSM entered service in the late 1950s, by which time the King George V class had been placed in reserve and were under the process of being sold. Vanguard was also in reserve, and not far away from being sold. Only the USN clung onto their battleships later than this, and this was more for political reasons.

Although I suppose I don't know why, in that case, 'Battleships' or Battleship sized craft that carried a larger arsenal of missiles haven't been a thing, Kirov class aside. I'm assuming it's something to do with mobility?

I lean more towards battleships, the big boats. I live in North Carolina, so I am grateful to have visited the USS North Carolina many times. My favorite class is more generic. I really love the Bismarck Class battleships.

Cruisers are my type, but I acually like civilian vessels more, because of their uniqueness (I'm saying uniqueness because they're still unique imo). 1930? Warships have the same body, but civilian vessels evolve. 1940? Same. Down to 2000? Warships could gain new weapons and new designs, yeah, but civilian vessels... evolve.

I forget her capacity compared to a dedicated missile cruiser, but "Big Mo" did launch Tomahawks at Iraq during Desert Storm.

Considering how cruiser classes have evolved in offensive/defensive capability, the battleship in these times at 3/5ths the crew compliment of a super carrier, and equal to light carriers, it is very expensive and overspecialized.
When you consider that most low tier second, and high tier third world navies do not bother with classes higher than the destroyer/frigate, and may more likely develop/purchase a submarine before a cruiser.
Progress, not perfection.
