Sept. 2024 GenSec Nominations

Postby Desmosthenes and Burke » Wed Sep 04, 2024 4:23 pm

*** September 2024 GenSec Nominations ***

Due to extended inactivity Kenmoria has been removed from GenSec, leaving us needing a sixth member. This thread is open to accept nominations to fill this vacancy. We ardently wish to complete this process before the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday season. Accordingly, we ask the following be kept in mind:

  1. Staff members are expected to maintain activity. Please do not accept a nomination if you plan to leave the game or be inactive for long periods.
  2. Following the above, GenSec members are expected to be regularly available to act, potentially on time-sensitive matters. Please consider your availability to handle this in accepting/declining a nomination.
  3. Nominations will only be considered if they are publicly accepted within this thread for transparency and record-keeping. If you are nominated and accept the nomination, please state such in this thread.
  4. As with prior rounds of selections, responding to a hypothetical, in a reasonable time, will be part of the process.

Let the nominations commence!

I nominate Bisofeyr, who has shown unparalleled dedication to improving the quality of his proposals to extents where many would give up or turn to petty politics.

He has noted to me he's going through an extended period of inactivity, but I choose to nominate him anyways simply because I think he's the singularly most qualified person not already on GenSec, and would no doubt be a great asset to the GenSec on his return in a few months.

Given the holiday season, I'm reluctant to nominate anyone without first knowing which major players are willing or able to participate. No point in nominating people without knowing if they are available.

So far, I agree with Bisofeyr and Haymarket Riot for nominations if they are willing and able.

Feel free to nominate any player who is not already on Gensec! Naturally you can second an existing nomination -- though keep in mind that this is not a vote, and the decision of who to appoint ultimately rests with Gensec and site Moderation.

It isn't a popularity contest. It's a selection process based on knowledge of GenSec rulings and other factors.

This isn't a personal call out or anything - but I really don't think two users who got involved in the GA in the last year should be the frontrunners for the open GenSec. If that really is the case, then there should be serious reconsideration of the 6 member rule.

I actually second Bisofeyr. I don't disagree that they're fairly new, but their reasoning and adaptability in the forum have left an impression on me, even in instances where they have gotten the rules wrong.

What do community members think of this? The main objection internally to moving back to five has been the belief that GenSec with five members is less productive and less active. In light of this year's heavy case load – with 10 cases, where only one actively involved all six members, – does the community believe this to be true?

Edit. Some may see this – "where only one actively involved all six members" – as a bit of a shocking claim. But you can confirm this using https://bit.ly/gensec-catalogue. The statistic is even more pronounced when expanding the window over the last four years back to 2020. That one case where all six members participated (Reducing food contaminants and residues [2024] GAS 1 which ended up being a tie) is the only case in that range. You have to go back to [2019] GAS 2 to find the last instance where all six members participated.

Image

There have been, in total, 66 GenSec cases of which 11 involved all six members (mostly concentrated in 2016–17).

As someone who's only been active in the GA for the past year, if y'all have out-of-game/forum means of communication, and the five senior members are willing, taking in a sixth who is newer as a sort of "Junior" GenSec who can ping y'all for questions might be agreeable? Maybe make their membership temporary until Kenmoria returns, or have a probationary period?

The biggest criticism of the GA in the game as a whole is that it's an ivory tower that fails to incorporate or welcome new members into a community of quality drafting. If Bisofeyr's biggest drawback is that he's too new, I say that is a virtue that he's risen to the occasion enough that multiple people are nominating him.

On my phone during a layover currently, so bear with me.

I understand the criticism against me for being too new; I am certainly less experienced than several of the frontrunners. I think the bigger challenge has to do with time commitment; I have just departed on a trip to “study abroad” which will last a little over three months, and I intend to make the most of it. That is, not spend time on NS where not strictly necessary. The timing of this means that it is difficult for me to accept the nomination without mentioning this.

However, I do feel confident in my ability to do the job if GenSec deems me the right choice. In the meantime, though, I’d put my weight behind the nomination of Haymarket, who has shown to have an aptitude for common-sense legality opinions. Other good options include Tinfect, Overmind, and of course Wallenburg, and as such I would nominate all of those individuals.

tldr: i dont think i’m a good candidate at this time but i do tentatively accept my nomination and will work with gensec through the process

The idea of junior and senior members of GenSec introduces far more problems than it could possibly solve. What does it mean to be junior? Why is one member singled out for fewer authorities and responsibilities? Why should GenSec take someone on that they apparently don't trust with full GenSec membership? GenSec works in part because its members are equal peers.

I've really got to ask why so many people are naming Haymarket Riot, whose brief tenure as a member of this community has not demonstrated anything resembling mastery of the rules or the principles surrounding those rules? This isn't a popularity contest where we reward players for successfully breaking onto the scene. This is a regulatory and clerical position intended to satisfy a community need.
