If you enjoyed Harry Potter, you might enjoy Artermis Fowl by Eoin Colfer as well, it has many similar fantasy elements and a young boy as a protagonist. The only difference between the two series are that unlike in Harry Potter's wizarding world, Elves are not slaves to human, but in fact one of the most powerful races of the fairies, and also that instead of magic wands, we have literal laser guns. It's safe to say AF is more sci-fi focused than HP.

A few of my favorites are Wings of Fire, Spirit Animals, Warriors, Survivors, The Dragon Rider, and The Dragon Waking. Most of them are fantasy, dragon and animal related, but Warriors and Survivors are more realistic fiction. All of these are children’s books, most with a little gore or at the very least, violence.
