Are we in the future?

Postby Repreteop » Mon May 27, 2024 7:02 am

Throughout history, people have had visions for the future, especially in media. My favorite example is from Back to The Future Part II where there is a part where they end up in the year 2015. Now, there was no such thing as flying cars (at least in the technological level of hover technology), but there are references to things that they believed would still exist, like the Soviet Union and other small things. Another movie, Soylent Green, suggested we would all struggling to get food and water and that New York City would have over 40 million residents by 2022.

Believe it or not, we kind of got a trashier version of 2015 and a better version of 2022 than they made, its been almost 10 years since then and we still don't have flying cars. However, we've also gotten close, we have cars that can drive themselves, close research that has let someone move mouse cursors with their brain (this is getting big), and literal commercial space programs.

I personally think we aren't in some sort of future as they envisioned, but we might be getting close. Hopefully our future is more like Back to The Futures idea of it though, because SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!

Apart from the cool things you mentioned in the OP, don't forget that with modern technology and communications mostly controlled by governments, we may be a little bit more near in the direction of a weird mix between 1984, farenheit 451 and brave new world, with mass media used to say whathever the governments want, capitalism and big corps doing its things and no one longer interested in reading a book of 200 pages but a tik tok of 60 seconds.

By definition, we can’t be in the future. The future is always immediately ahead of us. We approach it, but never reach it.

This is the future I fear will happen, but the chances of this future occurring is somewhat likely. Yet the masses are somehow not noticing this, and they will probably not notice this for a very long time.

I meant future as in what was futuristic then and what technology we've gotten. I'm already aware that we're in the present.

I don't think flying cars will ever be practical enough to become a tech that actually gets adopted, though the progress with personal VTOL vehicles is looking promising. Their biggest issue is range at the moment. Look up Jetson one on youtube and you'll see what I mean. It's basically a drone with a cockpit, but can only fly you about 7 minutes toward a destination before needing to turn around and return to the charging bay. 10 if you ignore any safety margin.

To the Babylonians, definitely. To me from one second ago, not really. The question is, whose idea of futuristic are we looking at?

For the inhabitants of the USSR, the future was very important, because it was believed that in the future a certain abundant system would be realized with free distribution of goods and automation of living labor.

If in the USA they tried to reflect the future in the film "Back to the Future", then in the USSR it was shown in the popular film "Guest from the Future". There, teleports, space travel and flying cars coexisted with a kind of ecological utopia: in Moscow in 2084 there is no traffic on the streets, no skyscrapers and dense buildings - huge forested areas are shown, in the spirit of the then popular idea of saving nature. The inhabitants of the future in this film have significant developmental advantages: polyglots, athletes. The film's plot revolves around the pursuit of an experimental mind-reading device, originally intended to study the thinking of animals. At the same time, individuals and groups hunting for this device move in a time machine from 2084 to the USSR in 1984.

Compared to reality, the progress in the film “Guest from the Future” is conflict-free and linear; of course, neither the possibility of the collapse of the USSR, nor armed conflicts in its ruins, nor the slowdown of scientific and technological progress due to overstocking of the world market are shown. It is clear that the ideas of Soviet ideologists, directors and censors about the future were overly optimistic and very naive. But, for all that, the possibility of a bright future with abundance and automation of labor is still not excluded in reality, even if this project is destined to make its way through thorns and social upheavals.

Well, I kinda hoped that the future would have had cybernetics and a Dragon as the US president, but that's not happening. On the other hand, I remember downloading Baldur's Gate 1 when I was just a wee lad and that thing came on 5 disks and took all day to download. A week ago I ripped it out of the air like a wizard and had it installed and booted in an hour, which is pretty fuckin' neat-o if you think about it. Also I guess we have megacorporations, so that's another tic in the box.

I think the answer is that we aren't in a cool future, but we're living in a future.

If anything, as light and sound waves and the like take time to reach your body, and then the signals yet more time to travel to your brain and yet more time to be integrated into your subjective experience of the world... any particular model your brain makes of the world at any particular moment is necessarily actually of the past. This is most obvious when large distances are involved (ie. seeing distant stars many light years away, and thus as many years in the past). But it's true to a lesser extent to all things. So if anything, a conscious agent is always experiencing the past.

In a sense yes. But equally any subjective model one has of the world at any moment is actually in reference to the past, and any actions they choose to take are necessarily future. Unless you're in something like a flow/wuwei state (but even there, there's still some physiological processing time necessarily).

It is always here and now though. That is very true.

We were promised flying cars, robot servants, a cure for cancer, and world peace. Instead we got climate change, crap AI "art", microplastics in our blood, and the largest war in Europe since WW2.
A young, left-leaning, democratic nation located in a region similar to the Balkans in terms of climate, culture, and likelihood of war with its aggressive neighbour.
Almost all stats and policies are canon.
