Pirates

Postby Solstice Isle » Mon May 20, 2024 9:21 am

I think pirates are very interesting, they pillage, they steal, they fight and they are really cool, so what are your thoughts on pirates should they come back, why did they go away, are they cool, discuss here.

Hollywood pirates are cool. The real life ones, not so much. In fact piracy is very much a thing still, the raids on shipping ships in the red sea is a form of piracy, not to mention the Somali pirates in the same region. But hey, if you think the modern pirate is cool, I'm not gonna force you to change that opinion. But to say pirates went away is just false.

Though I will say the one recorded successful ship capture by sky pirates was rather cool to read about.

Pirates never really went away. They are criminals. Criminals are not cool. Privateers are not around anymore and they were kinda cool. There were some really sadistic pirates who were definitely uncool.

I met a Somali who explained that Somali pirates are considered to be cool by Somalis. They are kinda viewed as heroes. So I think some people think at least some pirates are cool.

I think pirates are on a spectrum. On the extremely cool side are gentlemen privateers. On the extremely uncool side are sadistic terrorist pirates.

What is more common, however, is piracy of the downloading movies for free variety.

Imagine some group of bored friends LARP as pirates from the XVII century, buy a boat and guns, and make a pirate enterprise mercenary-like, get an agreement with corporations to raid other corporation's cargo, raid coastal ports in africa, etc, reviving XVII-esque piratry.

Pirates and privateers were quite often the same people. A privateer who can't produce his letters of marque, or who exceeds their terms, would have been hanged for a pirate. And many pirates became so because they had been privateers but were cut loose by their government when it no longer had use for them.

It's very cool as a Hollywood concept. It would be cool in real life if it didn't affect real people. Living the life of a pirate seems really interesting though, I could make a few stories outta that.
Every time I think of pirates I think of Captain Celaeno and her crew from the My Little Pony movie X3

I have a Pirate Party flag tattooed on my shoulder. I don't really give a shit about the actual organization these days, they're pretty irrelevant anyway, but I still love my tattoo as a symbol of torrenting remorselessly.

Pirates are robbers from the time of the Great Geographical Discoveries - and this was the period of the collapse of feudalism and the formation of capitalism, the period of primitive accumulation of capital. Lucky and thrifty pirate captains could invest the treasure they found in legal businesses and become capitalists. At the same time, people at that time were driven not only by the desire for profit - some pirates had concepts of justice brought from the rural community, a desire to punish rich oppressors and help the oppressed poor. Just as the “noble robbers” or the leaders of peasant uprisings did. The book “The Heir from Calcutta” shows these two types of pirates: Leopard Grelly, who became a factory owner and cruel exploiter of workers from a pirate, and Bernardito, who tried to protect all the oppressed. These were very colorful types, a fertile topic for adventure novels. Subsequently, there were more pragmatic egoists among the pirates, and the number of fighters for justice decreased. Just like in the criminal world in general.

Now I'm wondering if you looked it up because I mentioned it, or if you knew about it before haha. But yea, using a rigid airship to board from above was a surprisingly risky endeavor.
