Valanora Information
The most important thing to know about traveling through Valanora is that automobiles are banned except for government officials. A high tech railway system connects the entirety of the nation, with three most popular international airports in Raynor City, Gladerial, and Baysleef. A ferry from Rinaldi travels to and from the island of Capri every hour on the hour. The most distinguishing feature of Valanora is the prevalent amount of forests standing in many of the inner half of the nation, even in cities, with the elven attempts to live in harmony with nature. Vanorians are a polite if not a bit high on themselves, believing elvenkind to be superior to humans, though they show a respect for the potential their humanoid cousins have.

Squornshelan Remnant States
World Cup of Hockey 51 Roster

It is not a good time for hockey in the SRS. Even as more and more investment, both foreign and domestic, is poured into the football clubs of the SCFA, the SHL has slowly withered from lack of marketing and no real vision for the future on the part of the league. Last season was lost entirely to a lockout after the players and owners could not come to an agreement on a new revenue sharing program, and the lack of play has only hurt the league's status and finances further. This has stagnated the development of new talents, and motivated some Squornshelan players to seek more stable employment in leagues elsewhere. Because of these problems, most of the SRS roster still consists of the aging veterans of past national teams. There are a small number of promising teenage players, but it's uncertain how much those raw talents will be able to contribute against the world's best.

OOC: Any players at SRS teams are available for transfer.

A Look at Canadian Dominion Hockey

Canadian Dominion hasn’t had a long history when it comes to sports, but since it’s first entrance into the 45th World Cup of Hockey, it would seem Canadian Dominion would slowly be referred to as a "hockey country,” and it would seem as if Canadian Dominion is slowly looking to have a breakout year as they have been restricted to the Round of 16 as they have been sent home multiple times, but when talking to players, it seems as if Canadian Dominion is ready and has players ready to make that push after a terrible year finishing 6th in the group. Although we will say that since its first entrance into the World Cup of Hockey, Canadian Dominion has consistently demonstrated its prowess on the ice, Despite facing strong competition from other renowned hockey nations, such as Gyatso-Kai, The Canadian Dominion has remained competitive and has even taken them to thrilling shoot-outs. While there may be times when Canadian Dominion falls short in certain matchups or encounters challenging opponents, it is important to note that their performance remains impressive and they continue to hold their own against some of the strongest hockey nations in the world. Additionally, it is worth considering that the nature of hockey allows for unexpected outcomes and surprises.

Going into the 51st edition of the World Cup of Hockey, Sarzonia's national ice hockey team entered with a lot of critical questions emphatically answered.

Could a team made up of a few core veterans and mostly so-called Scab Stars, a collection of semipro and minor league players actually develop team chemistry and win matches? Could Brett Tanguay, Sr. demonstrate that he was actually a worthy manager for Sarzonian hockey? Could Sarzonia shake off the disappointments of editions past?

The Stars developed enough chemistry to succeed despite losing starting goaltender Owen Franks to a concussion early on in the competition. They returned to veteran netminder Jacob Parsons, and he backstopped the Stars to a shock run to the World Cup final.

Along the way, Tanguay successfully massaged whatever bruised egos and resentments were left over from the lockout that cost the veterans an appearance in the previous World Cup. The team's luck ran out in the final, but Sarzonia vaulted from 26th in the hockey multiverse to sixth. Also, Sarzonia gained a new rival in Zenic, with whom Sarzonia split a group stage result and a knockout round match.

"We had an interesting time, I'll put it like that," right wing Brett Tanguay, Jr. said. "I'm glad we came together as a team, but it wasn't without its bumps and bruises."

Now there's a different set of questions for the defending runners up, chiefly, what Sarzonia will do for an encore. Franks left the team when Parsons beat him out for the starting goalie role. Franks did not respond to several texts and phone messages.

Parsons said he was ready to assume the responsibility as the starter.

"I started all the important matches," after Franks was injured," Parsons said. "I've got a good regimen going with my shrink."

As for the team's chemistry following the most recent World Cup, centre Alyssa Hannigan said the team worked through any lingering resentment that might have remained from the lockout.

"The players on this team can play," she said. "They've proven themselves the last two World Cups, including the one during the lockout. We're raring to go."

The prevailing theme surrounding this Stars team is unfinished business, but this time, that involves trying to join Cassadaigua among nations that have won a championship in every major sport.

"We felt like we fell just short last time," Brett Tanguay, Jr. said. "We want to finish the job this time."

EDSMONTIK'S WCOH51 TEAM

Edsmontik is not very well known for ice hockey, and it's population isn't either. With a big movement for handball signups and the new 1RHL league starting up, as well as the 2RHL when the 2nd 1RHL starts, things are looking up for those sports.
But for hockey, it was an abandoned idea ever since the HWC28 started.
Now, Edsmontik is reviving this- a winter hockey league to come, and signups into the next WCoH.
So following the entrance into the WCoH51, Edsmontik has released its roster.
With all these players, the crew hopes to make it far.
Let's get into the lineups now.

Notes: The Zenician Hockey national team comes into this tournament with high expectations. A fourth place finish at the celebratory 50th edition of the World Cup of Hockey has instilled immense confidence in the Frozen Survivor fanbase that ultimate victory is soon to be had. On top of that, winning such a historic championship on the turf of their boogeyman squad, Valanora, would make it all the sweeter. But Grover Per won’t let these players get ahead of themselves and will make sure they treat each and every game with utmost importance.

Short Nation History:

Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer

Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer is a city state of 78 square kilometers located in Anaia and founded in lhe 18th century by Jean-Jacques Le Boucanier (John James The Buccaneer), a pirate of unknown North or Central Calanian origin who decided to retire from piracy and found his own nation south of his country of origin. Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer has emerged in the 20th century as a merchant city state which favors capitalism. The current ruler of Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer is Prince Pierre-Alexandre 1er de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer, a direct descendant of Jean-Jacques Le Boucanier. Elections are outlawed in Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer. The national animal is the tapir, which you can see wandering in our streets.

Burnham-on-Stove

Burnham-on-Stove is a city state of 54 square kilometers located in Anaia. It used to be a district whitin Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer and it's named after William Robert Burnham, a pirate and friend of Jean-Jacques Le Boucannier. In september 1923, several communist districts of Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer, mostly of English origin, declared their independence and formed the new nation of Burnham-on-Stove. The Burnhamese Communist Party is the only authorized party in Burnham-on-Stove. The national animal is also the Tapir.

Saint-Jean-Jacques et Burnham-on-Stove

in 2023, 100 years after the independence of Burnham-on-Stove, the two nations decided to form a new sporting alliance to have stronger national teams and domestic leagues.

This would be the first time Leaf, known for it's young Ice Hockey players, was EVER participating in an Ice Hockey tournament that was not of Asia or itself, making it kind of a nervous situation for Leaf. But, the players of Leaf were experienced to skating on ice, because of living in icy areas of it. These players were specially selected from the best players of the 3 Ice Hockey tournaments of Leaf, having scored greatly in them. The players were trained for these icy environments, for they were born in them. And now the question arises, how will Leaf play in the Ice Hockey World Cup? Well, that question is to be answered by time itself, which will decide who will win and who will lose. Perhaps Leaf could be the runner-up or maybe even the champion in this World Cup? Well, just perhaps, just perhaps. Well, now for the everything else.

Goalies
G Bertus Bitterboom (24) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters
G Aduse Aedevo (21) - Aevanna Scouts
G Arame Augoven (25) - Arboren Vortex

The same three names as last edition. It's a winning combination between Bitterboom, probably the greatest goalie in Dragonflies history, who rarely if ever makes a mistake - he's so in control of the basics with little necessity to improvise. Aedevo and Augoven, on the Scouts and Vortex respectively, once played for each other's club, and both felt like they upgraded at the goalie position, for some reason. Aedevo immediately made a mark on the Aevarea League, heading into just his second year in the competition, but his explosiveness made him a menace on 1-on-1s and pretty handy against the powerplay as well. Augoven completes the trio as a more coaching goalie, used to his very young pairs of defencemen at Arboren.

Defencemen
Line 1
LD Reinier van Angelwoud (23) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters
RD Aennirin Ehoni (34) - South Aevanna Storm

Line 2
LD Aenoi Alrella (27) - Serevne Northerners
RD Ushku Shadongudhen (27) - Aevanna Scouts

Line 3
LD Audupu Aunopial (23) - Aevanna Scouts
RD Aomo Eadalin (22) - Serevne Northerners

Substitute
LD Aebubu Aol (26) - Aevanna Explorers-Mariners
LD Petrus Roodplataan (25) - Straudum Ice
RD Riquard Winterhaag (29) - Launott Polar Bears
RD Aolare Aemo (26) - Egevea Islanders

So the defence is pieced together from various ill-fitting jigsaw pieces. Typically, Ko-orenite teams tend to build their attack from the right defencemen - plenty of switches and changes though - so generally the left member of the pair is a little more physical, the right side a bit more in tune with how the team likes to build up. That results in a first line with a bruising Van Angelwoud and a jack-of-all-trades and one of the oldest players in the Aevarea League, Ehoni, coming back for likely one last attempt at the WCOH. That leaves line 2 with probably two better allround skaters than line one, with a bit of an unpredictable attacking streak, and line 3 with a defensive duo conscious of their positioning.

There's a bit of a shortage of players who are normally on the same club team: only Shadongudhen/Aunopial could team up as Scouts to capitalise on their chemistry, or Alrella and Eadalin as Northerners. It's an interesting choice to split them up into two different lines, though for their skillsets it makes sense.

Forwards
Line 1
LW Moen de Zwaluw (27) - Launott Polar Bears
C Aoere Aegomenna (23) - Arboren Vortex
RW Woutre Heerekornuit (31) - Straudum Ice

Aegomenna is far and away the best centre we have, out of a group of six standout centres who have all been called up. He's paired with the two players that best complement his skillset: Aegomenna can be a few seconds ahead of the rest of the team - and opposing defence - so he needs a great decision maker like De Zwaluw, who is reliable in either sending the puck down the ice or turn back to retain it, as well as an enforcer type like Heerekornuit to bail him out around the boards or near the goal. That frees up the Vortex playmaker to be more important elsewhere or get enough time to sink back in defence while the Straudum Ice heavyweight floats up to disrupt play.

Line 2
LW Aohise Aemenenna (24) - Aevanna Scouts
C Birtle Montrose (25) - Aevanna Scouts
RW Figgall Dyannara (23) - West Coast Blizzards

This line has the telepathically linked Scouts duo, Aemenenna and Montrose - yes, Montrose is only 25 but has been on the Dragonflies for ages - with Dyannara as the cement between defence and attack. Kuang is confident that only the Blizzards right winger fits into their system and can elevate their play while being more than just a role player himself in the meantime. It's hard to say what exactly this line will excel in: if forced into a defensive role, they will feel at home but they're mostly here to break the defence with a completely unforeseen pass.

Line 3
LW Robert Dartett (27) - Straudum Ice
C Tiele van April (24) - Straudum Ice
RW Tiele Loenaren (27) - Mahrkioren Elks

Two Ice players and Loenaren, or rather three mainland players. This is the showboat line, with the three most technically gifted players we can find, accounting for a little bit of chemistry between the Straudum starters. They won't like to sit back and defend - they're up for the job if it's just compressing and waiting for the turnover - and they're always looking for possession and making plays.

Line 4
LW Koddagana Perral (20) - West Coast Blizzards
C Aiaa Aolunelin (24) - Serevne Northerners
RW Arinia Aolopei (31) - Serevne Northerners

Enforce, block, contain. Aolunelin and Aolopei know their niche and the Northerners certainly know what kind of team they are these days. Perral being the all-rounder needed to make this line into something with some offensive staying power doesn't make them worse at least, but this line is for hits.

Substitute
LW Jacob IJzerkroon (27) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters
C Mathias Loenaren (29) - Lamau-Dartha Hunters
C Vigisaruu Lumjagau (23) - West Coast Blizzards
RW Aenva Avdu (29) - Aevanna Scouts

The substitutes are all-rounders capable of filling in nearly everywhere, with Loenaren a slightly more visionary centre and Lumjagau more of a team player and a slightly more defensive focus.

There's an opportunity for the all-Blizzards line of do-it-alls, Dyannara, Perral, and Lumjagau, who have all been praised in their specific section for gluing together the rest of the line with team objectives. Avdu could make an appearance on line 2 to make it an all-Scouts line as well.

Powerplay
Depending on the opponent, it'll be line 3 (creative playmakers) or line 1 (highly skilled but patient to find a better shooting lane). Nearly any defensive pair will do.

Penalty Kill
Line 4, hands down. Likely with defensive pair 1 or 2 for a slightly more balanced approach at great defence.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a regional (but not necessarily small) sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word. Tarrashall is also a culture that you'll run into, famous players from there include Hallady Buck and Yaller Nyan, and they often play for the West Coast Blizzards.

The league has made the move from amateurism/semi-professionalism to fully professional over the last year. To get there, some teams were moved, some merged, others folded while new teams (in different locations) sprang up to fill the void. This has left part of the fanbase bitter and resentful: their team might have moved, a 80+ year old rivalry might have disappeared, etc. The rest of the fanbase has been very welcoming: more of Ko-oren can enjoy the fastest team sport in the multiverse. Still, the league didn't exactly expand beyond its usual borders (Aerellen, the northeast, and the north coast). There's also the matter of Banija's team in Schemerdrecht: while opening up the city to ice hockey, it has taken away expansion opportunities.

Name: KUANG Deniigi
AGE: WCOH+2
Nationality: Kajinazumi, Shaojin Province, Fire Nation
College: Republic City State University (Class of 2012.2)
Degree: BS, Sports Kinesiology
AHL History:
Makapu Flames (Season 2012)
Kyrimorut Kamikade (Season 2013 – Season 2021)

World Cup History
Reserve - WC 17 (2012.3) – WC 21 (2014.1) | 9 caps | 3 G, 5 A
Start – WC 23 (2014.1) – WC 43 (2021.2) | 141 caps | 78 G, 115 A

Being born in the Fire Nation doesn’t exactly exude a future storied career in a sport played on ice. Yet in the small village of Kajinazumi, a household name would be born in the Kuang family; in their middle child Deniigi. Playing youth hockey all the way through the system before getting a full-ride scholarship to Republic City State University, where under one of the best hockey programs in the Republics Kuang would find himself making the Reserve Roster for the Gyatso-kai National Ice Hockey team at the age of 19 for the Seventeenth Edition of the World Cup of Hockey. He would make nine appearances on the reserves, often times subbing in for an aging Ito Pakku. His transition to starter after the retirement of Ito, as well as his continued development, led to an integral part in the first World Cup of Hockey victory for the Ice Bisons.

Following his retirement, Kuang has accepted a position at his alma mater, as an assistant coach for the RCSU men’s team. He has been entertaining coaching positions for a few AHL and RHL teams, and even an Arendallic team. His defensive style of coaching, though, might be just the perfect fit for the Dragonflies of Ko-oren, who have always been a far more defensively minded team than most others on the multi-verse stage.

International sporting success has come rather belatedly, and suddenly, to Peter Zakharov, a patient, good-humoured and almost fatherly figure who resembles a popular, rarely seen uncle at a family reunion more than he does an elite sportsman. Born on the southern island of New Hibernia to parents of Soviet descent who migrated to the Plough Islands as part of the Vital Skills Programme of the 1970s, Zakharov followed his father into engineering and has been a safety inspector at the Crabble II nuclear power station for over twenty years. Always a keen sportsman, he played both cricket and ice hockey in his youth before drifting towards the latter, playing once or twice a week at the Peaceful Atomic Energy Association, where he played in goal because it left him less tired and with more time to socialise at the end of a game.

Then came the inaugural Anaian Ice Hockey Championships, where despite his greying temples, Zakharov's old friend Paul Campbell included him in the nine-player Plough Islands team he had decided to assemble for the event, as much for his organisational skills as for his ability in the goal crease. To the surprise of everybody - not least themselves - the Plough Islanders stumbled their way to the title in Koroa City, and managed to repeat the achievement several months later at the second edition in Ko-oren. Zakharov has typically spent most of the events organising practices, liaising with federation officials, and generally shepherding the small group of Plough Islanders around as a de facto team manager, but he nevertheless played seven games across both tournaments and, save for a scrappy 5-3 win over Huayramarca in Arboren, has been a resolute and dependable presence at the back of the rink.

When Ko-orenite ice hockey supremo Erji Tehauden approached the Ice Sport Union of the Plough Islands - or rather Campbell, its only real representative - about recruiting a Plough Islander to bolster her own team's coaching staff ahead of the World Cup of Hockey, the initial reaction was befuddled disbelief. It was quickly realised, though, that ice hockey in the country could only benefit from sending someone on a barely undercover fact-finding trip to the premier tournament in the multiverse, and Zakharov readily volunteered for the task. After a few phone calls to Sutton and to Crabble, a leave of absence from the nuclear plant was arranged, and Zakharov stayed behind on the Halcyon Archipelago to share what little he knows with the Dragonflies and observe, at close quarters, how ice hockey is organised and played beyond the Celestial Ocean.
WCC and WCOH President and NS Sports' only WC, WBC, WB, WCOH, IBC, RUWC, Test Cricket, ODI, and T20 loser!

For best RP results I'd recommend saying Test Subject followed by jersey number, i.e. "Test Subject 99" for the back-up goalie. And "Test Subject" has to be said in full.

Aww man, it melted :(

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes (go nuts)
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Yes (see above)
Assign Penalties to my Players: Yes (although bear in mind that Test Subjects aren't dirty players but rather they're just really, really stupid.)
Eject my Players: Yes (no limits. Both of the domestic soccer teams consist of literally one person total so ejecting all of my players but not abandoning it due to lack of players wouldn't be too out of the ordinary)
Godmod Other Events: I'm fine with everything up until the dismantling of Placely Placington. Deaths aren't just allowed but even encouraged due to the nature of Placely Placington, although ideally I'd recommend making them incredibly over the top (for example a player bursting into flames the instant his skate touches the ice)
Obligatory wacky and "so random" puppet that you all know and are probably sick and tired of, brought to you by Elejamie.

Nickname: The Ice-a-phants
Style Mod: -2

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], In fact, the men's national team - nicknamed the Ice-a-phants as of 2021 - are one of the best teams in the multiverse, winning five times (29th, 31st, 35th, 43rd and 49th), being runners-up in the finals four times (30th, 32nd, 44th and 48th) and getting three bronze medal games (28th, 37th and 46th); although the B-team won a gold medal in the men's ice hockey at the 12th Winter Olympics and a bronze at the second IBA Sports Championships, they're considered a different team and as a result their achievements are not counted. Anyway, current head coach Simón Montenegro was a decent hire but his attempted title repeat didn't exactly pan out so well with a quarter-final exit. Whether it be him leaving out big names from tournaments past in favour of new blood, his more "style mod of -3" plan not working out as well as the "style mod of 0" plan that his predecessors managed to get to work, his more confrontational style of coaching starting to wear thin on the players even if he is more Tortorella than Keenan, or the fact that a song I listened to the day before turned out to be a bad luck song. Whatever it is, he has said that he'll be leaving his post after WCoH51 or 52 for the simple reason that all coaches have shelf lives, so the hunt will be on for a new coach soon.

Oh yeah. New tournament, slightly more experienced team, slightly more interested in attacking, let's hope the Ice-a-phants don't suck as much this time around.

Win song: Queens of the Stone Age - Smooth Sailing

Home to the Davenport Dockers - the most successful team in the ENIHL (Elejamian National Ice Hockey League) - and the national team. Built in 1992 to replace Dockside Stadium, which was eventually demolished in 1995, Davenport Stadium is the largest ice hockey arena in Elejamie, with a capacity of 18,500. The stadium was originally known as the Davenport Stadium but it also spent a brief spell in the early 2000s as the Rapid Beer Co. Stadium. Eventually, it was renamed the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium just in time for the start of the 2015/16 season, in honour of famed politician and diplomat Declan Madgwick (1927-2015).

For the record: In the northwest of Elejamie, the term "stadium" is used for any building which hosts a professional sports team even if they don't play on a pitch.

Coventry City Arena, Coventry, AVEN
Image
Horn: Coventry Blaze 2021/22 horn
Goal song: System F - Out Of The Blue
Penalty song: Justice - Stress
Win song: Tiesto - Ten Seconds Before Sunrise

Built in 1989, the Coventry City Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena and, with a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins. It's also the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. Following the end of a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller, one that had been ongoing since 2013, they reverted to a variation of their old name while they wait for a new sponsor.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; one person at a time and they can't be out for anything longer than two games. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Yes (see above)
Assign Penalties to my Players: Yes (but try not to make my players seem dirty, especially since Cerin Meloten and Harrison Blackburn are two of the nicest players on and off the ice and Stacy Saunders is more interested in getting points rather than getting himself into trouble)
Eject my Players: Yes (one ejection per match with a one game suspension and they have to serve their suspension before another player can be ejected)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is but I'd recommend TGing me if you've got any other ideas

  • Stacy Saunders is still a guy, if anyone's wondering. So, if you do mention him in your RP, make sure you say "he", "him" and "his" instead of "she" and "her".
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details.
  • Elejamie will wear their alt kit on MD1 and either the quarter-final or the semi-final if they're not the home side for the QF.
  • Danilo and Felipe Barajas are twin brothers, with Danilo being the oldest by about five minutes. If you choose to start them in your RP then please have them both on the same line.
  • Ideally there should be an acute mark over Simón because he's Hispano-Elejamian but I'm not too bothered if you miss it out in your RP.
  • Alex Martin's age went back three years because I forgot to change it when I made him my new second-line left defenceman. Sorry about that.

Imporia Harriers

Ice Hockey in Imporia
Imporia has a cold season from October to March. Temperatures often drop below zero, making Ice Hockey very popular during that season. The Imporia Harriers is the national team for ice hockey. Many members of the team come from the province of Impora, where temperatures can reach -40° F. The harriers are having their first WCOH this year.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Goran Tuđman (24) - HC Morski Lavovi ( Sea Lions) - Goran is one of our best hockey players ever. Already from his junior days, he showed enviable hockey skills. Goran played in the hockey club Katanija, then he moved to the severe city rival hockey club Kings Stars Katanija. Today, he is a member of the Morski Lavovi hockey club from the smaller town of Zenica. The club used to be called Željezni pak, but the club was bought by a local tycoon, changed the name and brought the best hockey players from the country and a representative from Raspotochje. The club was soon the hit of the national championship, winning the title with one point ahead of Kings Stars Katanija, and Goran Tuđman won the MVP award for the second time in a row, his third award overall.
He made his debut in the senior competition when he was only 19 years old. Then at WCOH 42, Goran drew attention to himself because he was our best scorer, and in the 4-3 defeat against Banija team, Goran scored all 3 goals for our team.
With the national team, he won a silver medal at the XVIII Winter Olympic Games and 4th place at the II IBA Sports Championship.

Ai Toyotama (23) - HC Morski Lavovi ( Sea Lions) - Ai Toyotama is a great and fast hockey player. One of the best in her position at this moment in the world. We can certainly say that. This young girl has a great overview of the game and follows the game almost like chess and is always in the right place. It is difficult to follow her on the ice because she is technically fantastic. She played for the hockey club Čelik, but since last season she has been in Morski Lavova from Zenica. She won the national cup with Čelik and the champion of our league with Morski Lavovi.
She has been with the national team since her junior days and made her debut at the 16th Junior Championship in Delaclava, she was 17 years old.
Then our national team made its debut at major world hockey competitions and entered the top 8 in the world.
At the senior competition, she has two Olympic medals, silver and bronze.
In the senior competition, she made her debut at WCOH 42 at the age of 17 and a half, scored 4 goals and had 4 assists. She was also the player of the match in which our national team beat the Bohemia IV team 5-2.

Petra Jurešić (23)- HC Kings Stars Katanija- This player is our captain for a reason. Petra is a real leader of the teams he plays in, and he is the same in the club. Petra took her first hockey steps in the Kings Stars Catania club, where she still is today. She was a two-time national champion and cup winner with the club. Although the Morski Lavovi club offered her big money to join their team, Petra refused and stayed at her parent club.
She made her debut for the national team at the 16th World Junior Championship in Delaclava and led our team to the quarterfinals.
She made her senior team debut at WCOH 42.
With our women's national team, she has two Olympic medals, silver from the XVI Olympic Games and bronze from the XVIII Olympic Games.

Lightning on Ice: How Kamijiro's 23rd Most Popular Sport Got a Team for the World Cup of Hockey

The story thus far: (the full story can be read on the domestic newswire, available here.)

Miro Mäkinnen has been called to manage a hockey team in a country he's never heard of - over 6,000 miles away from his homeland. He's been paid in full, up front, to come to Kamijiro and try to find a group of at least ten people interested in playing ice hockey. Mind you, there's only one ice rink in the entire country. And it's only used for figure skating. Ice hockey had recently placed 23rd in a public opinion poll for "favorite sport," placing just one spot below Earthworm Spotting & Identification (the tournaments can get very serious for that, by the way.) He was lucky that twelve people showed up. There were no cuts on the roster, he took everybody he could. Miro is also the emergency backup - in case of injuries.

The practices thus far have included "who can skate from one end of the ice to the other without falling over," "can anybody hit the target from about two meters away," and "how to actually put on pads." The skates they use are usually home-made skates or some form of ice-skating skates. Not that it would matter what type of skates they'd be in, it's not the skates that make you good at hockey. The team also spent most of the prep time learning that the offside rule is, in fact, different than football. "The line, not the man!" was Miro's most common quote. Icing also didn't make any sense to the defenders. "What do you mean I can't just launch the puck as far away as possible?" The jerseys they're using are literally oversized customized football club kits - they couldn't commission real hockey jerseys in time for their departure to Valanora.

Yes, Miro has started getting migraines, and yes, the team has failed to score in multiple scrimmages - but the goal here is to have fun. And maybe bring hockey up from 23rd most popular sport in the country.

The roster:
Starters (First Line):
Name Position Kit # Height Weight Handedness Age Gender Notes:
Alain Jean-Charles Center #29 5'11" 195lbs Right 17 M Playing in home-made skates,
good puck handling, French but English speaker
Rika Tsutsumi Left Wing #92 5'7" 120lbs Left 18 F Ex-figure skater, lightning fast,
team captain
Luke Hamilton Right Wing #12 6'2" 200lbs Left 21 M Daddy's boy, rich kid with real skates
from overseas, soft, temperamental
Ryuta Nomura Defenseman #8 6'0" 185lbs Right 21 M Only here because he was dragged
along by Baku
Baku Matoi Defenseman #49 5'10" 170lbs Left 23 M Nice guy... until he hits you while
skating at Mach II
Shaun Johnson Keeper #1 6'4" 210lbs Left 24 M Only one with any form of experience

Back-Ups (Second Line):
Name Position Kit # Height Weight Handedness Age Gender Notes:
Ben Peterson Center #20 6'0" 195lbs Left 22 M Like to shoot.
From anywhere at all.
James Morgan Left Wing #22 6'2" 190lbs Left 25 M 'Captain' Morgan - nickname gained from
being drunk constantly
Aoi Shiratori Right Wing #25 6'0" 175lbs Right 19 ? Scores well. Gender is unknown,
silent always.
Kyosuke Kume Defenseman #42 6'3" 215lbs Right 23 M Aoi's boyfriend, big hitter
but no skill otherwise
Jean Essart Defenseman #70 5'11" 190lbs Right 16 M Only speaks French. Nobody else on
the team speaks French.
Andrew Kelleher Keeper #2 6'1" 175lbs Left 25 M Can save the fast ones.
But not the slow ones.

Manager (and Emergency Sub):
Name Position Kit # Height Weight Handedness Age Gender Notes:
Miro Mäkinnen Anything #99 6'1" 200lbs Right 42 M Hockey is his oxygen. Will play
anything needed if there are too
many injuries.

That's everybody who showed up to the tryouts. Miro has his hands full - he's expected to turn these rag-tag non-skaters into players who can at least keep it respectable on the world stage. Outside of Shaun Johnson, there's not a single player here who's played at any level. Shaun's experience level is playing with friends when he lived abroad. Miro's made himself available as an emergency substitute in case of injury, but he's been retired for five years.

There's no designated power-play or penalty kill units. Miro subs as he sees fit, especially in those cases. Usually, the center comes off for a penalty kill. For power plays, the first line is what he usually goes with, unless somebody from the second line has been balling (pucking?) out.

Skating into the Frozen Giant's heart

It's been a long, long wait but it's finally over: the World Cup of Hockey is back once more! After months and months of unofficial amateur matches and the sparse international friendlies, the best of the best (including us!) congregate into one location to determine who is Emperor amongst commoners. Not everyone has a viable shot at being champions but everyone is going to give you their all for the chance. And this edition looks geared to give the Frozen Survivors of Zenic extra motivation, but also extra roadblocks: this cycle's edition takes place in the home of the Elves, Valanora.

Long time fans from all reaches of the multiverse shudder whenever they hear that name escape from someone's mouth: none more so than those from within the boundaries of the Empire. Twice, on the edge of glory, did the Calcuttas strike down the Frozen Survivors. The first and most heartbreaking was WCoH 28, when the two squads went the distance in 5 games in a series where every game was as competitive as you could imagine. And the most recent confrontation was at the celebratory 50th WCoH, where Valanora defeated Zenic 3-2 in a shootout after a highly contested match that remained 1-1 for most of the game. These two squads have always risen to the level of their opposition but the elves have managed to come out victorious each and every instance.

Now, Grover Per must lead this valiant squad into the heart of their biggest nemesis and attempt to finally reach the promised land that few others have attained: Hockey World Champions. And it will be a craggy kick off to this campaign as they must do battle with the 5th best hockey nation in the world: Kelssek. Known to all a perennial contenders and former champions, Kelssek is a tough draw for the opening match of Group D but one we expect Zenic to take head on with no hesitation. A win against such a formidable opponent would put Per and the squad in the driver's seat for their group.

After all, they might not have a choice: the rest of Group D is filled with top 40 squads or hopeful debutants. Huayramarca, Darmen, and Juvecus have marched their way up the rankings and earned their spot amongst the top 40 nations in ice hockey. Juvencus and Darmen will be extra motivated as they both finished 3rd in their groups last edition and look to get over the hurdle this time to qualify for the knockout stages. Huayramarca, on the other hand, will be looking for revenge as Zenic defeated them 2-0 on the road to winning Group B last time. And while Fantier and A Place Somewhere are both fledglings to the ice hockey scene, we've seen unranked teams pull off shocking results against "supposedly" better opposition so they cannot and should not be taken lightly.

But coach Per has surprised us in both of his appearances in charge so far and there's no real reason to start doubting him now. I may be fortunate as I'll have the honor of experience this potentially spectacular event in person. And if possible, I recommend that you do so as well.

Claude Favreau was assigned to write his first column for a small, local daily newspaper in northeast Somerset.

He was being assigned to provide his take on the matchups the Sarzonian national ice hockey team would have in the 51st edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

"But I'm not a hockey guy!" he protested, his eyes wide and eyebrows arched high. "I couldn't tell a line change from an icing call!"

Clint Larsen, the grizzled sports editor who was leaning back in his chair lowered his head just enough to peer over his spectacles at the seemingly edgy teenager looking at him and, he could tell, feeling like a fraud. Sure, he'd gotten the gig as an opinion columnist, but he figured it was his last name that got him in the door despite the ink from the headmaster's fountain pen on his high school diploma still being wet.

Larsen grunted for a moment, running his right index finger across his upper lip and grazing the bushy brown mustache he wore as was his custom. He waited another moment, aware that the kid had a million thoughts going through his head. He then flashed back to when he was a cub reporter. He remembered the sport's editor who'd sent him to the news department and the surprising reassurance he'd received.

"Claude," he said, "You're last name didn't get you shit," he said. He then sat up and leaned forward ever so slightly. "Your writing did. Look, it's extremely rare that we let some kid out of high school come in as a columnist straight away." He looked at Favreau for a moment to let the words sink in. "You're not here to analyse the performance of the second power play unit in a five-on-three situation. You're here to give us your brand of colourful takes on the World Cup of Hockey. Now go for 'em, kid!"

Favreau didn't let the words sink in before he began to review the results of Sarzonia's group draw, which placed the Stars in Group C. He decided to write a brief note about the team's out-of-nowhere run to the final, then chose to provide his takes on each matchup.

Raspotochje [UR]
Who? Never heard of 'em. Well, at least not in terms of hockey. I mean, they play some sports, but they're coming in unranked. Should be an easy two or three points or whatever you get for a regulation win.

Abanhfleft [55]
Not much history with those folks in hockey, but they're really good in lacrosse. Plus Sarzonia's played 'em a lot in football too. I think they played us in other sports too. Worst case, the players'll get a "trap match" speech. Otherwise, it might be one of those matches that are good no matter what the ranks say.

Cassadaigua [13]
They're the highest-ranked team in the group besides the Stars. They're not just really, really good, but they're a team Sarzonia play a lot in multiple sports. They may not be as much of a rival as, say Delaclava or Banija in just about everything, but it's pretty freaking close. Sarzonia better be up for that one, that's for sure.

Patriotlandia [21]
They're ranked right below Cassadaigua so they're nothing to sneeze at. This will likely be the toughest twi-match stretch the team get. We don't have any scouting reports on them yet, but I think, I hope, they'll have them by the time they play.

Equestria [43]
Sarzonia don't have much, if any history with the ponies on ice, so it should be interesting spectacle, at least. They're not figured to be a threat, but Sarzonia weren't and the Stars ended up playing in the final last time out. It would behoof them not to let up. Get it?

Delaclava [36]
I don't care what their record was last time out. It doesn't matter. This is one of those sporting rivalries where you throw the tables out the penthouse window of the Stars Tower [OOC: the tallest building in Sarzonia. Think the Willis Tower but with another 15 stories]. Remember when Sarzonia hosted the Atlantian Oceania Lacrosse Championship and Sarzonia were worldbeaters and Delaclava were winless? That game went to overtime. Phoenixes are not to be taken lightly. Ever.

Prediction:
I gotta do it? Seriously? OK, Sarzonia and Cassadaigua are through. Patriotlandia make it as a third place side. For the rest, let's watch this thing unfold.

Favreau hit submit, hoping he wouldn't get reamed. His dream was to write for the paper, not be fated to deliver it.

Rebuild to Rebound?

HUElavia enters WCoH 51 with questions in a young roster as they look to do well in this edition.

The past few decades for HUElavian hockey has been a rough one. After highs of Quarter-Final runs in the early 40s have now led to Group Stage exits that led to an all-time low in the previous edition of an 0-0-1-9 record at the last edition of the World Cup of Hockey, held by Quebec and Shingoryeo. With such horrid performances from a very aged squad, HUElavia dropped to a lowly 39th place in the rankings, the lowest since the team was unranked in their humble beginnings.

In the present, the Department of Sport and Athleticism of the HUElavian Government had to step in and put in funds to grow the sport once again. While HUElavia is not a country that is normally thought as a "Hockey Nation," there is desire to make the sport popular once more, aiding in the rise of more players and talents throughout the country. Thus, with funding in the past few years since the injection of cash, young players have began to emerge and now have spots in the current roster. Among the young, promising talents includes Defensemen Juan David Aguinaldo and Stefano Escribano, as well as attackers Norberto Belluci Sato, Alexandre Macedo Canto, and Koka Carhuanina Sayritupac. These players have proven to have raw but solid talent that if nourished right, can be stalwarts for the future. This is while being led by veteran players like Goalie Mateus Bernardes Monteiro, Defensemen Donovan Wilkinson and Roman Schock, and strong Attackers in the likes of Zachary Campbell and Giovane Cavalcanti Brandão.

HUElavia (39) was put into Group B with the likes of Squornshelan Remnant States (16), Anthor (33), Edsmontik (UR), Pluvia and the Saxean Isles (UR), HUElavia (39), Osterhalten (10), and Dod Rava (8). Realistically by rankings, HUElavia is projected to win 2 games and lose 4 and the best upside is winning 3 and losing 3. Still, Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos are aspiring to give it their all and pull upsets as they can to push for a Round-of-16 appearance once again. While there may be favorites in every match, anything can happen and this team intends to take it a game at a time to learn things through and give it their best. Here's to hoping we can start going back up again.

Kelssek has a physical and aggressive style of play, with a tendency to forecheck aggressively. Its hockey culture also puts inordinate emphasis on board play; losing board battles implies shame, weakness, cowardice, hormonal inadequacies, etc. There is also a cultural divide between whether players should adopt complex offensive tactics or dump-and-chase. Duncan prefers the former, but older players especially are more comfortable with the latter.

TEAM CASSADAIGUA- World Cup of Hockey 51

Coach- Samantha Hudson (51)- 2nd WCoH
Assistant Coach- Hailey Lockhart (44)- 2nd WcoH

Typical Starting Lineup:

(Line and defensive pairings listed below are the typical pairings, but things can and will be mixed up from time to time)

Line 1:
LW- #17- Emily Barton, 27 (6'4, 202)- Power forward, very accurate shot.
C- #9- Cayla Wade, 28 (6'2, 196)- Playmaker and should do very well between these two. Although she’s got a great shot herself.
RW- #21- Tori Davis, 30 (6'1", 204) (Captain)- Sniper, but despite size, she's not afraid to get physical. One of the few on the team returning to the same position she was in before.

Line 2:
LW- #16- Amanda Norton, 26 (5'8", 177)- Speedster who handles the puck well. Small, but is able to "take hits" without getting hurt. Would be 1st liner here if taller.
C- #14- Brianne Deschamps, 27 (6'1", 191)- "North" Cassadagan recently burst onto scene. All-around shooter and passer.
RW- #20- Hailee Cortez, 33 (6'6", 232)- Power forward, but loves to drop the gloves. Will make sure no one takes liberties with Norton.

Line 3:
LW- #64- Carlee Carrigan, 25 (6'4", 228)- Physical presence but does know how to put the puck in the net more than most may realize.
C- #27- Brittany Hedstrom, 32 (5'10, 189) (Alt Captain)- Defensive forward, excellent checker. Brilliant on faceoffs.
RW- #28- Darrell Wesley, 26 (6'6", 235)- Defensive minded former North Cassadagan who enjoys hitting.

Line 4:
LW- #34- Thomas Needham, 24 (6'3", 200)- Power forward. Streaky.
C- #33- Sarah Prusinski, 23 (5'11", 194)- All around player.
RW- #39- Pavel Romanov, 31 (5'10", 182)- Smooth stickhandler and passer.

Defensive Pairing 1:
LD- #4- Addie Mitchell, 27 (6'2", 204)- All around player, can take on any role.
RD- #3- Natalie Reynolds, 29 (6'5", 231)- While she plays with a physical edge, she’s deceptively agile with a great shot.

Defensive Pairing 2:
LD- #6- Jessica Barnett, 29 (6'4", 217) (Alt Captain)- Stay at home defenseman.
RD- #5- Rylie Sutton, 22 (6'1", 194)- Mobile defenseman, can QB a PP very well. Plays like a much older player.

Defensive Pairing 3:
LD- #58- Michael Crossman, 26 (6'5" 218)- Physical presence and primarily a stay at home type. Has powerful slapshot, but is not accurate with it. 1st time starting
RD- #7- Shannon Benford, 25 (6'5", 215)- Could use her size more, but is mostly a stay at home type.

Goalies:

Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: No
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes, but only say they are hurt
Godmod Injuries to my Players: No
