1961: The Warm Winter

IC| Map | Discord

The year 1961 unfolds as a critical juncture in the Cold War, presenting a myriad of geopolitical challenges and opportunities for nations across the globe. As the world's population grows, the strategic navigation of this increase becomes increasingly crucial.

In Asia, the Republic of China, under the leadership of the Kuomintang (KMT) and leaning towards the West, plays a significant role in regional dynamics. This pro-Western stance encourages nations to navigate the complex balance of power between the democratic influences of the West and the remaining communist forces in the region.

India, bolstered by its recent independence, faces its own set of challenges, including economic development and the persistent conflict with Pakistan over Kashmir. These issues underscore the intricate geopolitical landscape of South Asia.

Europe's narrative continues to be shaped by the post-World War II era, with the Soviet Union exerting its influence over Eastern Europe and subtly challenging Western policies. The continent remains a battleground of ideologies, influencing the discourse on Europe's future direction.

In the Middle East, the nascent state of Israel and its surrounding Arab nations continue to grapple with ongoing conflicts. The region's stability is further complicated by Cold War dynamics, with superpowers vying for influence through proxy engagements and diplomatic maneuvers.

Africa is navigating its decolonization phase, with newly independent nations confronting challenges of nation-building amidst ethnic and political divisions. The continent's rich resources draw international attention, often leading to external interventions.

In North America, the United States, under newly elected President Nixon, faces internal political tensions particularly concerning civil rights and the ongoing threat of nuclear confrontation with the Soviet Union. Nixon’s administration is poised to navigate these complex international waters with a firm anti-communist stance. Canada, in contrast, is experiencing relatively stable growth and political development.

Latin America is marked by political instability and the emergence of revolutionary movements, exemplified by events like the Cuban Revolution, which has significant implications for U.S. foreign policy in the region.

Participants in this role-playing journey are invited to lead their chosen nation from the start of the Cold War, navigating through a meticulously crafted scenario that demands realism and strategic acumen. The decisions made will not only shape the fate of nations but also define the legacy of leadership in a period fraught with global tension and ideological strife. How will you influence the course of history, and what mark will you leave on the world stage?

Domestic Policy Overview/Challenges:

The Civil Rights Movement: All of the American people desire freedom and equality of opportunity. For too long, this was not the case across the land and, even by 1961, some areas still are fighting against the equal treatment of all Americans.

The Red Menace: Communism and communists lurk behind every rock and in every shadow. Anything even a bit red can send alarm bells screaming.

Healthcare and Welfare: The great debate over providing for all Americans while also not becoming a nanny state is raging.

Foreign Policy Overview/Challenges:

The Space Race: Get to the moon before the Soviets.

The Red Bear: The Communists in Moscow seek to devour the world, the must be prevented.

The Spreading Revolution: The revolution that started in Russia did not die there. While it was defeated in China, it still burns across the globe.

Military Information (If different from irl you must indicate that here): IRL USA with the following exceptions

SAM 2600 and 2700 are set to enter service on January 20th, 1961. Likewise, the Chinook helicopter is about a year ahead of IRL schedule.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

A New Nixon: In 1944, while stationed on Green Island, a small, previously contested island in the Pacific, Lieutenant Nixon faced a significant threat when a Japanese air raid targeted the island’s naval installation. During the attack, Nixon found himself trapped under debris in a partially destroyed supply depot. As he awaited rescue, uncertain of his fate, he experienced a profound spiritual epiphany.

Praying fervently for deliverance, Nixon promised to dedicate his life to serving others and embracing his faith more openly if he survived. Miraculously, he emerged from the ordeal unscathed, and the event marked a pivotal turning point in his personal and spiritual life. From that moment, Nixon abandoned his habits of drinking and smoking, attributing his survival to divine intervention. This brush with death deepened his faith in Jesus Christ, leading him to become more openly devout and confident in his convictions. This newfound faith influenced his decisions and demeanor, making him a more compassionate and thoughtful leader, guided by principles of integrity and service.

The 1960 Election: Unlike real life, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is arrested in late 1960, then Vice-President Nixon is the first to call Mrs. King and to work to release MLK. This move, coupled with the already decently warm relationship between the two men, sees the majority of the black vote go for Nixon. This surge, combined with a more focused campaign from Vice-President Nixon that targeted important swing states, delivered the electoral college and the popular vote for Mr. Nixon.

GDP (PPP) Per Capita: (tbh I have no idea how to calculate these so if somebody could help I'd appreciate that)
Currency: Krona (Sweden), Krone (Norway)

Domestic Policy Overview/Challenges:

Glorified Dictatorship - Despite Sweden-Norway proclaiming to be a democracy, it's government is very similar to the Soviet one, with the chairman being appointed by the Committee of the Socialist Party (CSP). However, the CSP holds less power than the chairman themselves being unable to do anything without the chairman's permission, leading to a power struggle similar to the Investiture Controversy.

Unpopular Government - As mentioned previously, the government is a facade despite their international claims of being a democracy. The people themselves are unaware of these claims, but that does not stop the people from being aware of this blatant situation.

Norwegian Separatism - Ever since the restoration of Sweden-Norway the Norwegian half of the country has always shown dislike towards the union both in the past and the present.

Foreign Policy Overview/Challenges:

Warsaw Pact - Sweden-Norway, and by extension Finland, are both members of the Warsaw Pact. This has drawn NATO's attention to the north of Europe as well, and Sweden-Norway is considered to be a threat towards Denmark and West Germany.

Support of Communist Uprisings - Sweden-Norway so far has tried their best to support the Communist revolutions in several foreign countries. So far their interventions have been futile, however.

Finnish Puppet State - The Socialist Republic of FInland is a semi-independent state controlled by Sweden-Norway. While they are considered to be independent, their current government is actually a figurehead, and the country itself is under the control of the Sweden-Norway chairman.

Military Information (If different from irl you must indicate that here): Same as IRL Sweden and Norway combined.

Alliances (If different from IRL): Warsaw Pact

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

1936: The Socialist Party led by Karl Kilbom takes power in Sweden following a civil war between Soviet and Fascist backed Socialists and the Allied supported Democrats. The SP at first is very anti-stalinist and pro-nazi, but slowly embraces Stalinism as it aligns itself with the Soviet Union.

1939: The Socialist Republic of Sweden invades Norway shortly before Poland is invaded by the Nazis and quickly overruns the country. The United Democratic Republics of Sweden and Norway is born.

1940: Sweden-Norway intervenes in the Winter War on the side of the soviets shortly before it ended in our timeline. A two front war was too much for Finland to handle and they surrendered right after Sweden secured Lapland. In the following piece deal, the Soviets took Karjala, while Sweden-Norway took Lapland as well as puppeting the rest of Finland. Sweden-Norway and Finland signed a defensive alliance with the Soviet Union in return for such land gains.

1941: Sweden-Norway and their Finnish puppet join the side of the Soviets following operation Barbarossa, and aid in the stopping of the Nazi advance. However, following an invasion of the Swedish mainland from Denmark, Sweden-Norway had to focus less on defending their ally. The rest is similar to our timeline, with WWII going largely the same. After the war, Sweden-Norway transferred the Aland Islands to their territory and even stole Bornholm during the liberation of Denmark.

1955: Sweden-Norway and Finland sign the Warsaw Pact.

Nationstates Name: Sao Nova Europa
Nation Name: Kingdom of Greece/Βασίλειο της Ελλάδος
Capital: Heraklion
Territory: Crete
Population: 1,002,500

The population of Crete has drastically changed upward. Native Cretans are around 350,000 but in the aftermath of the Greek Civil War, 232,500 soldiers of the royalist Hellenic Army and 370,000 civilians (mainly from Attica and the Peloponnese) fled to Crete along with government officials and bureaucrats. The so-called Helladites (Ελλαδίτες, from mainland Greece) form the core block of supporters of the royalist regime.

Legislature Name: National Assembly (Εθνική Βουλή)

The 1952 constitution established a rather unique multicameral legislature:

Parliament of Hellenes (Βουλή των Ελλήνων):
The parliament that was elected in the 1946 elections in Greece. It is a permanent body of 354 MPs and is meant to represent the entirety of Greece, which the kingdom still claims officially. When an MP resigns (or dies), they are replaced by a politician selected by their party. The King appoints as Prime Minister the man who can command a majority in this chamber, and only this chamber has the power to bring forth a vote of no confidence. This legislative chamber has earned the nickname "Parliament of Immortals" (Βουλή των Αθάνατων) because it never dissolves or changes its composition nor is it subject to elections (at least until the mainland is recovered). Since the conservatives have a strong majority in this chamber, it ensures they have a stronghold on the nation regardless of electoral results in the other chambers, leading democracy activists to decry the kingdom as a sham democracy.

Senate (Γερουσία):
A body meant to represent the regions of the kingdom. Since the mainland has been lost, only four regions have representatives in the Senate: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi. Each region is represented by ten Senators, elected on party-list with proportional representation, so, in total, there are forty Senators. Senators are elected every six years, and their election is used to legitimize the image of the kingdom as a constitutional monarchy. The Senate can both propose its own bills and reject bills passed by the Parliament of Hellenes, but the Parliament of Hellenes can overturn the Senate's veto with a two-thirds majority - which conveniently the conservatives have in that chamber. That means that the Senate can be safely ignored and is of secondary importance to the Parliament of Hellenes.

House of Lords (Βουλή των Λόρδων):
The House of Lords is a body appointed by the King of the Hellenes. Its membership varies but, currently, there are seventy-five lords. The lords are granted titles of nobility and membership in the body by the King at his whim, though it is customary for members to be eminent diplomats, retired politicians and generals, athletes, scientists, and academics - as well as relatives of the King. Notably, the House of Lords has complete control over all bills concerning foreign policy. It - and not the Prime Minister - is also responsible for appointing the Foreign Minister. This means that, in essence, the King has control over the foreign policy of the nation and can ignore both the government and the other chambers.

Parliament of Hoplites (Βουλή των Οπλιτών):
This legislative chamber is meant to represent the Armed Forces of the kingdom. It has 200 MPs. Half of them are appointed by the Royal Joint Chiefs of Staff. The other half are elected by the members of the Hellenic Army (both professional soldiers and conscripts [the kingdom enforces two years of mandatory military service for all men]) from amongst themselves. Thus, in theory, at least half the body is democratically elected but the soldiers are instructed on who to vote for by their superior officers - and there are allegations of voter fraud. The Parliament of Hoplites appoints the Joint Chiefs of Staff and has exclusivity in voting bills that concern national defense and internal security: it - and not the Prime Minister - appoints the Minister of National Defense and the Minister of National Security.

House of Professions (Βουλή των Επαγγελμάτων):
The House of Professions is meant to represent professional groups. Forty MPs represent farmers and agricultural interests, thirty MPs represent the interests of artisans and small businesses, thirty MPs represent businesses and industries, fifteen MPs represent (officially recognized by the state) workers' unions, and five MPs represent academia. The MPs are elected by their peers within the respective sectors. The election process varies between each professional sector, but usually involves businesses or individuals within the sector voting for representatives. The House of Professions can propose legislation and can reject bills put forth by the Parliament of Hellenes, though their veto can be overturned with a simple majority in the Parliament of Hellenes. This means that the chamber is mostly a consultative body lacking real powers.

Holy Assembly (Ιερά Σύνοδος):
The Holy Assembly is comprised of the Archbishop of the Church of Crete and eight Bishops representing the eight Metropolises of Crete. The chamber has exclusive authority on ecclesiastical and educational affairs in the kingdom. It - and not the Prime Minister - appoints the Minister of Education and Religion. Orthodox Christianity is the official religion of the kingdom, and the Holy Assembly is tasked with "safeguarding the Orthodox traditional of the nation" as per the Constitution.

Party in Power:

United Alignment of Nationalists (right-wing to far-right: royalism, national conservatism, nationalism, anti-communism):
208 MPs in the Parliament of Hellenes
15 MPs in the Senate

National Political Union (center to center-left: social liberalism, centrism):
68 MPs in the Parliament of Hellenes
9 MPs in the Senate

Liberal Party (center: national liberalism, anti-communism):
48 MPs in the Parliament of Hellenes
8 MPs in the Senate

National Party of Greece (center-right: liberal conservatism, economic liberalism):
20 MPs in the Parliament of Hellenes
5 MPs in the Senate

Union of Nationalists (far-right: Metaxism, neo-fascism, royalism, nationalism, religious right, anti-communism):
9 MPs in the Parliament of Hellenes
3 MPs in the Senate

Union of Agrarian Parties (big tent: agrarian interests):
1 MP in the Parliament of Hellenes

GDP Nominal: $286.4 million
GDP Nominal Per Capita: $307
GDP (PPP): $2.7 billion
GDP (PPP) Per Capita: $2,900
Currency: Greek Drachma (δρχ)

Domestic Policy Overview/Challenges:

Security State:
Political freedoms in Crete are curtailed. Left-wing and "communist-sympathizing" political parties, civil associations, newspapers, and workers' unions are banned. Censorship is in place which prevents "communist propaganda", including the criticism of the monarchy or the 1952 constitution. While elections take place - and elections for the Senate are mostly free - the convoluted political system makes them essentially irrelevant. Liberals may have a place in the National Assembly and may criticize the conservative government, but that is all they can do, as they are institutionally unable to challenge it and take charge of the government.

Helladites and Cretans
Helladites (Ελλαδίτες) are the soldiers and civilians - and their descendants - from the Greek mainland who fled to Crete in the final phases of the Greek Civil War. They outnumber native Cretans, and form the core block of support of the royalist regime. Before the relocation of the royalist government to Crete, the island was actually a hotbed of liberalism and republicanism. The clash between the left-leaning liberal native Cretans and the right-leaning conservative Helladites causes discord, and so do accusations of government favoritism towards the Helladites. In recent years, however, a number of Helladites have switched to supporting liberal parties, though not to an extend that can threaten the conservative government.

Labor Camps:
The government maintains what are officially called "Centers of Reeducation" but in reality are labor camps for political dissidents: open republicans, suspected communist sympathizers, and those considered a "threat to national security". Liberals are generally able to evade crackdown as they operate within the constitutional framework and because they legitimize the supposedly constitutional structure of the kingdom, but it isn't unheard of radical liberals being arrested for reasons of national security.

Neo-fascist radicalism:
The Union of Nationalists is a junior partner of the mainstream conservatives and is known to be favored by the King. A neo-fascist organization - comprised mostly of Metaxist sympathizers - it is granted considerable leeway by authorities. It maintains a paramilitary wing - the Nationalist Militia (Εθνικιστική Φρουρά) which freely engages in attacks (such as beatings, arsons, etch) on individuals deemed unpatriotic. Most of the time such attacks are not investigated by the police and charges are almost always dropped. The Union of Nationalists also organizes public festivals - which mainstream conservatives indirectly promote and push people to participate in - to celebrate the "achievements of the Hellenic race". Those festivals push the radicalization of the population.

Political apartheid:
While officially the civil service is politically neutral, when deciding on who to hire, those who can prove they have conservative political sympathies end up getting hired. While entry in public universities is officially determined by nationwide exams, students whose families are conservative enter the universities whereas those belonging to liberal families end up getting rejected and have to study in private universities instead (if they can afford the cost). In the military, those with conservative political connections end up getting promoted to the higher ranks.

Foreign Policy Overview/Challenges:

American vassal state:
Crete is often derided as an American vassal state. It relies on American military support to defend against the communists on the Greek mainland, has strong economic ties to America, and always sides with America in foreign policy affairs. While Crete is considered somewhat of an embarrassment by some liberal-minded Americans due to its authoritarianism, it is tolerated as a reliable anti-communist ally in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Reconquer the Mainland:
The royalist regime has not given up on the goal of reconquering the mainland. It maintains high military spending and regularly saber-rattles with the communist regime on the mainland, vowing to recapture it from the "atheistic communist scums". Of course, it is unlikely the kingdom will be able to capture the mainland any time soon.

Cyprus:
Crete has been pushing for a union between the Kingdom of Greece and Cyprus, and has been opposed to the concessions given to the Turkish-Cypriot community. Enosis remains the goal of the royalist government.

Military Information:

The Hellenic Armed Forces maintain a standing army of 120,000 men. It also maintains mandatory military service of two years for all men. At the age of 18, all Greek men are required to serve.

The Hellenic Army has 80,000 men-at-arms, 200 tanks (M4 Sherman and M24 Chaffee), 300 infantry fighting vehicles (M3 Half-track and M113), 400 artillery pieces, 200 anti-aircraft guns, and a number of support vehicles.
The Hellenic Navy operates 2 destroyers, 4 frigates, 6 submarines, 20 patrol vessels, and 10 auxiliary vessels.
The Hellenic Navy operates 100 fighter aircraft (F-84 Thunderjet, F-86 Sabre, and various models of the Hawker Hunter), 20 bombers (B-25 Mitchell), 50 training aircraft ( T-6 Texan), and 20 helicopters (Bell H-13 Sioux and Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw).

The Hellenic Armed Forces are beneficiaries of substantial US military aid, both financially and in terms of equipment and advisors.

Alliances:

The Kingdom of Greece is allied with the United States of America. The ties between the two nations are so strong that the royalist regime is often derided as a "vassal state" of America. Despite this, the regime has successfully resisted attempts by some liberal-minded American politicians to push for liberalization, thanks to its strategic place in the Eastern Mediterranean and the fear of a possible communist takeover.

History Changes (Subject to review and approval by OP and Co-OP):

The Greek Civil War lasted from 1946 to 1948. Incompetence on the part of the government, military blunders, and insufficient US aid (which came too late) meant that the royalist Hellenic Army was defeated by the communist Democratic Army. In 1948, seeing that a communist advance to Athens was inevitable and unstoppable, the royalist government organized an evacuation of soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians from Attica and the Peloponnese to Crete. Athens fell in October 1948, and by November the Peloponnese had fallen as well. A planned communist invasion of Crete was, however, stopped by the presence of the US navy.

Saved from communist takeover, the royalist government launched what has been termed as the White Terror (1948 - 1952), a period of mass executions of "communist sympathizers" and "republicans", causing the death of thousands. Crete had traditionally been a liberal and republican stronghold, so such heavy-handed measures were deemed necessary to preserve the regime. The 1952 Constitution essentially institutionalized conservative rule over the island by creating a convoluted political structure benefitting the conservatives and the King.

Under Alexandros Papagos (1952 - 1955), the kingdom saw a period of stability but rather sluggish economic growth and repression. His successor, Konstantinos Karamanlis (1955 - ), moved to devalue the Drachma, thus boosting Greek exports while undercutting imports. He was also the beneficiary of increased American economic aid, as the Americans were worried over the economic and social stability of the island. Pursuing an interventionist economic agenda, he invested in the creation of state-controlled manufacturing and industrial facilities. He also placed an emphasis on exports and economic developmentalism rather than social welfare, producing the Cretan economic miracle. Crete grows at a pace of 7% yearly, but the benefits of this economic growth are unequal and the kingdom remains in essence an authoritarian regime.

In the following piece deal, the Soviets took Karjala while Sweden-Norway took Lapland (and Petsamo if accepted) as well as puppeting the rest of Finland.

1955: Sweden-Norway and Finland sign the Warsaw Pact.

Depending on my commitments in other RPs, I might throw up an app for a loosely Soviet-aligned Israel - standing in roughly the same relationship to Moscow as Tito's Yugoslavia. Given the secular and socialist views of most of Israel's founders, that very nearly happened historically, and it would scramble the Cold War dynamic of the Middle East in interesting ways.

And therefore truly, Sir, I think it's clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government. I’m hesitant to approve this. If you can make a convincing argument, I’m ok with it however.
Pro: America, guns, freedom, democracy, military, Trump, conservatism, Israel, capitalism, state rights.

In the following piece deal, the Soviets took Karjala while Sweden-Norway took Lapland (and Petsamo if accepted) as well as puppeting the rest of Finland.

1955: Sweden-Norway and Finland sign the Warsaw Pact.
