The Red Baron (Closed)

Postby Arakhkhar » Fri Mar 29, 2024 8:16 am

The Red Baron

The Red Empire of British Arzelentaxmacone was hardly a state known for nobility. It, of course, was a Socialist country - and, under President Clarkson, a rather virulent one. So, it came as a surprise to all when the Red Empire aligned itself with the powers of the International Security Directorate, and its founder, the Principality of Arakhkhar.

A second shock, however, was rather quick to come - after the somewhat sudden and unexpected declaration on the part of the Baroness Vana - as she recommended the Red Empire's delegate to the International Security Directorate's assembly, Olaf Kurtii, for the honorary title of Baron. Perhaps, to add to the shock - President Clarkson consented to having her citizen named a Baron, despite the fact that there hadn't been an Arzelentaxmaconean nobleman in decades. Perhaps, even some outrage.

What was more, was the murmurs among many of the nobility in Arakhkhar - especially with relation to the alleged affair between the Baroness and Mister Kurtii - that this was all improper, that it should not go on. Many felt especially iffy about allowing a foreigner, a Communist no less, to an honored title.

Regardless of the complaints of the citizens both nations, the Coronation of Olaf Kurtii progressed - as the archpriestess of the Lirvittian Imperial Church in Arakhkhar consented to the affair, and, with the approval of the Vicereine - citing "extraordinary services rendered to the Principality of Arakhkhar in diplomatic service," Olaf Kurtii was called upon to receive the title of an honorary Baron of Arakhkhar.

The venue was chosen - a temple of the true faith, roughly an hour's drive from the capital city of Novalira. It was truly an impressive building - a dark gothic structure, seeming to call the heavens with its numerous towers and spires.

The Baron-to-be was escorted on his left and right by silken Praetorian guards - black silk, draped over armor, as they carried their ceremonial staffs which hummed with electricity - behind them, his Invitark - the individual responsible for recommending Olaf as a noble, the Baroness.

The affairs of the Lirvittian Imperial Church were rarely observed, let alone participated in by outsiders - and for this matter, not even his family was invited - the only individuals in attendance could be members of the Imperial Church, the Invitark, the invitee, and a spouse (he did not have one, so this was foregone.)

First, however, certain conditions would have to be met. For one, Olaf would have to wear ceremonial wear - and go through a ritual of 'cleansing' - effectively, a baptism in a crystal clear creak nearby, accompanied by several members of the local convent.

En route to the Imperial Church

Olaf twiddled his thumbs as he sat patiently in the car, glancing out of the window every now and again to admire the surrounding, forested landscape. It was different to the concrete jungle to Arz, much more natural, with hilly forests like the one he was travelling through untouched by the upheaval of infrastructural development. It was beautiful, for lack of a better word, and the tranquil atmosphere only added to his sense of joy and excitement for the day ahead.

Turning to the Baroness, he began to speak, the usual excited twinkle in his eyes. “Thank you for the opportunity to be here today, Vana, I so appreciate it. Especially since it’s such an honour to be made a baron - really, it’s something I never thought would happen when I first arrived at the ISD boardroom. I can’t thank you enough.. for everything.” He smiled.

The Baroness looked at Olaf with something of a twinkle in her eyes, as they were driven in the limousine by her private driver.
“When you first walked in those doors, never did I imagine this is where we’d end up.”
“It has… really been an experience. You’ve made it quite enjoyable for me, you know?”
She smiles.
“So, thank you.”

Olaf’s smile widened, the look in his eyes one of genuine joy. “Well, thank you… it means ever so much to me. Really, it does.”

“You know.. I’ve so loved my time here. I mean, I’ve always enjoyed being a delegate here, but now I feel like Arakhkhar is where I feel.. happiest. Here, I feel safe, comfortable and, well, happy. Plus, I don’t have to worry about all the stuff in BA considering they are.. less than positive towards me, what with the upcoming coronation. I was thinking that maybe, if it were allowed, I could.. stay here a little while longer?”

The Baroness looked into his eyes, still smiling somewhat, but, perhaps, troubled.
“Well, you can move here. You already have a home in the diplomatic district. It wouldn’t be too much of an issue for you to… stay.”
“I… I don’t want you to be an outcast more than you already have. You can still back out, you know.”
She turns her head.
“And you realize that living in Arakhkhar, permanently, there would be a lot of shifts for you to get used to. For instance… being a foreigner… and a man… you wouldn’t have many rights - granted, as a noble, things would somewhat different for you in terms of… options. I can make things easier for you, but only to a point.”

“Thank you for being so kind, Vana. Your concern is touching, really, I appreciate it. I’ll admit, I do love staying here. Everything about Arakhkhar is just so wonderful, there’s so much here that I simply love.. the nature, the culture.. spending time with you.”

He paused, smiling wryly as a slight blush crept up his face.

“But I don’t want you to be worrying about me. How about I stay here as planned, just not live here permanently for now? I’d still be able to work, to stay somewhere, but not as a permanent resident.. at least, for a little while, until I maybe change my mind.”

The Baroness blushed a bit, looking down.
“Yes, that would probably be for the best.”
“Have you thought about where you’d like to stay? You already have a place in the diplomatic district, but, becoming a Baron, your options have… opened, considerably.”
She looked outside.
“Ah, I recognize this area. We’ll be at the church shortly.”

“Well, if you like the coast, there’s the Solkhar province. If you like the rainy weather, and don’t mind watching the military constantly send convoys through there, there is Veksilgorov, to the west. Although…”
She blushes.
“That is somewhat far from me.”

Olaf smiles, and blushes as well with a quiet chuckle. “Well, I mean, it would be nice to be able to spend time with you… for, err, diplomatic purposes. Plus, I’m not a big fan of the, uh, coast. Perhaps there is somewhere else I could stay?”

She speaks.
“Yes, you could. You could also get an apartment within one of the spires, or perhaps, get an estate outside of the city.”
She had a thought, but didn’t speak it.
She looked out the window, and saw the road turning.
“Ah, just a few minutes, now.”

Olaf’s eyes widen as he stares up at the spires in awe, the architecture like nothing he had ever seen in BA. He smiles, the twinkle returning to his eyes. “Oh, it’s wonderful! Are we near the church now?” He asked, clearly excited as he leaned forward to admire the structure.

He turns. “BA? It’s very different to here, put it that way. The capital - Arz - is very modern in places, we have skyscrapers and high rise buildings just like over here. Everything is a bit more.. grey and depressing, though. In the capital there is barely any natural space, everything has been developed into apartment blocks or massive concrete structures. “Skei-Skil sounds nice.”
She smirks.
“Perhaps it sounds nice to me because it sounds similar to here, but yes… I might visit, someday.”

As Olaf glanced through the window, the ominous and majestic form of the Imperial church came into view - encompassing it, almost.
As they came closer, a small number of little white dots became visible - as they came closer, it was realized that these were people - rather, temple sisters. They wore white, pristine robes - and a hood that covered their eyes, but not their mouths. They stood at equal distance from each other, watching the car approach from a distance.

“You are always welcome to visit Skei-Skil if you wish. My family own a cabin there, in one of the forests near the coast. I’m sure they’d be happy to let you stay.”

Pausing, he gazes at the structure of the church, his eyes scanning the building and admiring its gothic architecture, something that was difficult if not impossible to find in BA. He stared at the temple sisters with a curious and slightly anxious look, not at all used to the sight and feeling rather nervous as a result. Olaf soon began straightening his tie as he usually did when anxious, turning to the Baroness with a thin smile as he brushed some dust from his new suit. “How do I look?”
