A 2008 "dateless 20p" (minting error affecting several thousand coins during that year's transition to the new-style UK coin designs) is rarer, and worth more, than a 1967 penny (minted in huge quantities in the years prior to decimalisation, ironically to deter people from hoarding what would have otherwise been 1968-71 pennies).

The date on a coin is not necessarily an indicator of its value, as Tinhampton has already said. For example, certain Roman coins from millennia ago are often sold relatively cheaply, due to a large quantity of them, despite their age. I myself own a Roman coin from 170 AD, however it is relatively common and not worth much money. On the other hand, a commemorative coin from the modern day may be worth more despite the fact it’s not as old.

So, out of interest, what is everybody’s oldest coin? Mine is a King Philip II Macedonian bronze coin from around 359 BCE. It’s low grade and pretty hard to see, but it’s rather cool nevertheless. How about you?

I'm a new collector, so I don't really have a really old one, but out of my 41 coins I have this 1966 Silver Romanian leu.

I see. Do you find all your coins then? For me, I buy most of mine since that way there is a higher chance of value or rarity among them.

I find them. Never know how a Czech coin ended up in Romania.

Sometimes you do find interesting things. Whilst gardening a few years back, I found an old coin (from my country, mind) dating to around 1915. No idea why it was just sat on top of the soil, but, made a nice addition to the collection nevertheless.
