The 1st NationStates Academic Hockey Tournament (SIGNUPS)

Postby NSAH » Tue Mar 19, 2024 2:18 pm

Welcome to the 1st Inaugural NationStates Academic Hockey Tournament!Image

What?
This tournament welcomes the most elite high school and collegiate ice hockey teams to participate in a grand tournament hosted in locations across Osterhalten. There will be two events, separated into High School and College teams. You may enter teams into both events, or just one if you desire.
Who?
As of right now, the NSAH is being run by Osterhalten. I am using the most recent xkoranate file available as of March 18th, 2024. Provided this tournament is successful enough to warrant subsequent editions, I will either extend an offer to a few active participants of the first edition or run a vote as to which nations will join a small leadership committee and expand to offer hosting bids.
Where?
Specific venue information will be posted along with group information. Games will be held at major professional arenas across Osterhalten, including the arena which hosted a group in the 50th WCoH.
When?
When the tournament begins will depend on when we reach a suitable number of participants, but I am shooting for roughly 3 weeks before signups close. This is subject to change. Matchday cutoffs will be at 11:59 GMT, every other day, with some wiggle room if requested.
How?
To join, simply list the names of two (2) schools per event from your nation that you wish to participate in the tournament (WITH your national trigram, i.e. USA or FRA, listed before the name). A few other requests include leaving out the mascot/team nickname from the signup, just to make things easier on me organizing. Please feel free to use that information in a roster, just not in any signup. Once the Everything thread has been opened, you may post rosters and RP there. I also kindly ask that you follow the general rules of the forum.

I plan on hosting everything the first time around. For each event there will be a group stage, the length will depend on the size of each group but likely 6-10 games. Then, the best X number of teams will advance to a knockout tournament.

On Puppets
Each player will be allowed to enter one (1) "puppet" nation into NSAH. Please make note in your signup of which nation is your main and which is your puppet. These puppet nations will be the first nations to be cut in event of cuts being necessary. I will strive to find formats which can accommodate all signups, but sometimes it is just not feasible.

FAQ
Will RPs count for both your High School and College teams?
Yes, they will.

Can I sign up 4 college or high school teams instead of 2 of each?
No, you may not.

Can I enter only one college/high school?
Yes, go ahead. I'd prefer if you entered two, however.

Will there be a Roleplay bonus?
Yes, I will grade RPs every matchday for bonuses.

Will the group stage be double or single round robin?
This would depend on how the signup numbers look. As a rough estimate, I'll say that if each group ends up with six or less participants, it will be double round robin, if more than six, single. If it ends up being double round robin (or more than 6-7 games in the group stage), I'll do 2 games per matchday.

I will expand this as questions are asked.

I'm not a fan of a high school division.

But, in terms of college I have some interest.... if this competition gets off the ground, would a nation be required to send the same two schools every tournament? For example, if I send School A and B for the first edition, and they get a fair amount of rank.... but then I sent School C and D for the second edition, would C and D start at zero for the second edition, or would I receive a general national rank, which would see what earned from A and B in year 1 get applied to C and D in year 2?

Or.... will this be like the RTC Cup/Di Bradini Cup, where there will never be ranks at all?

No, you may send whatever colleges you wish. I plan on making this competition a no-rank affair, similar to the way the WJHC is run. Of course, this can be changed if people decide that’s what they’d like to see.

If I may ask, why are you against a high school division?

As I said in Discord, I'm also into the idea of College Hockey (though just like Cassadaigua, I'd not take part in High School Level. More about my opinion on the spoiler below).

For me, High School Level Hockey would demand to get a look at information that is. Imagine a city like Everett, WA. It has 110,000 inhabitants, and seven high schools. Now think about nations with hundreds of cities, with different sizes and numbers of high schools. This would make the process of choosing a High School team to participate in the event a complete madness. In oposition, think about the number of universities in a small nation like Portugal (there are 102). It's really easier to deal with a smaller number of possible entrants in the domestic stage.

However, I would like to have more clarification on how you plan to run this event. Do you plan to have conference play, like NSCAA and NSCF, group stage then playoffs, or it will be a knockout tournament? Will you be the sole host of the entire thing? Do you plan to attribute some kind of roleplay bonus for each matchday?

This intrigues me. I'm more than willing to sign up for this at both high school and college levels.

I covered high school hockey in Maryland during my days as a newspaper writer and editor, so that would interest me too.

I'd imagine choosing a national team of high school kids would be akin to how other sports choose national teams at other youth levels. Perhaps the player pool is built off travel teams like basketball's AAU.

Lisanders points are both valid, and I’m sorry for not making the format clearer in the OP.

To address the high school issue, I do agree that fleshing out a high school system is near impossible. However, at least in the US, there are state and national tournaments that occur that could serve as an idea of how to select high schools to play. Also, creating just a pool of 5-10 teams that serve as the “best of the best” that continually reach the top two on your nation. Again, you don’t have to participate if you don’t want to but I plan on leaving it open unless we don’t get enough signups.

I plan on hosting everything the first time around. For each event there will be a group stage, the length will depend on the size of each group but likely 6-10 games. Then, the best X number of teams will advance to a knockout tournament.

Lisander's point about the high school competition sums up my thoughts, too, for the most part. I can see the logic of what Sarzonia posted, but I will pass on the high school part. I will, however, sign up for the college with:

Southern Victoriaville University (CDG)
White Mountain College (CDG)

The reason I asked about the ranks is for now, I want to send smaller schools to be the guinea pigs for the competition. The bigger schools will follow if this tournament takes off. Good luck with running it.

A little less than a week out we're looking at 22 collegiate and 10 high school signups. Pretty happy with the first total at this point but I hope we see some more high school signups, though I understand its not everyone's favorite. Hoping to get at least 16 high school signups, and 32 college.

This would depend on how the signup numbers look. As a rough estimate, I'll say that if each group ends up with six or less participants, it will be double round robin, if more than six, single. If it ends up being double round robin (or more than 7/8 games in the group stage), I'll do 2 games per matchday.
