The Archifel Invitational (2)

Archifel Invitational

Welcome, one and all, to the Archifel Invitational. Inspired by preseason tournaments from some domestic leagues, the district of Archifel in Drawkland decided to host a similar type of mini-tournament to precede the NSCAA regular season. This little friendly competition was first held prior to NSCAA 13, and the organizers have decided to bring it back for NSCAA 15!

The Archifel Archipelago is a collection of reasonably-sized islands off the southwest coast of Drawkland. They are considered part of a larger mainland district due to their proximity, and thus part of the Malicollet territory. Despite this, the archipelago is mostly self-governing, and has a distinct culture from the nearby mainland. Due to its tropical climate and picturesque ocean views, the Archifel Archipelago is a popular vacation destination year-round. Most of the tourists are Drawkian, though you sometimes get some foreigners attracted by the biggest beach name in Sonnel's biggest nation.

Sports in the archipelago have never been a huge draw, due to the hot tropical climate and the general laid-back atmosphere. In recent years, the archipelago has made an effort to become a somewhat notable name in the sporting spheres. First came the fun-loving baseball team, the Skiffers, in a shaded stadium. With the advent of large-scale indoor air conditioning, the Archifel Second Suns were founded in the DBO, Drawkland's professional basketball league.

Since then, the archipelago has made some efforts to attract more tourists through hosting domestic events. Despite not being home to a pro soccer or gridiron team, Archifel possesses a stadium capable of hosting sports with large fields. The Island Bowl has become one of Drawkland's most iconic college bowl games, and a couple neutral GLD games held in town are always a blast. Similarly, the Second Suns's court, Second Sun Stadium, has been used to host nationally broadcasted college basketball games for many years.

The idea for the NSCAA Archifel Invitational actually came from somebody on the Archifel Tourism Board, and the idea was an instant hit. A preseason tournament for the NSCAA, attracting a school from each of the major college basketball nations. This was a way to get fans excited for college basketball again, and for a few decently skilled squads to get prepared for the actual season. Also, it would make the local Archifel economy huge buckets of money!

As they did last time it was held, the Archifel Invitational will invite 8 teams, each from a different nation. Last time the competition mostly invited well-known but not huge championship contenders, but this time the eyes and hunger for money got bigger. The Invitational board decided to invite bigger names from each involved nation, hoping to put more eyes on these games, even though they don't mean anything besides a warm-up in the grand scheme of things.

Archifel Invitational 2 Participants:
Banija: University of Moravica
Cardenao: Alexandria University
Cassadaigua: Concord Heights Beauty School
Drawkland: Sadeg State University
Lisander: National Institute of Technology in Despina
Quebec: Saint Benedict's College
Ranoria: Matthensville Polytechnic Institute
Valanora: Turbani Tech

As for format, the bracket was arranged in a knockout format. Rather than eliminating teams after a loss, they would simply be sent to different areas of the graphic, sort of like a double elimination. The end result would be three days of games, four games each day, for each school playing three games no matter their placement and results. The eventual champion will be awarded the Archifel Invitational trophy, title, and gold medals. The runners-up and third place team will earn silver and bronze medals, respectively. These titles mean basically nothing, of course, but it's always nice to get some momentum and excitement before the real games begin.

Day 1 featured the first round of games. The teams were randomly seeded, and given the friendly low-effort nature of the competition, the skill level of each team was bound to be pretty similar. A loss here would ensure a placement in the lower half of the bracket, so any team that actually cared about receiving a decent results had to ensure a win here.

Games listed in the order which they were held, a morning, midday, afternoon, and evening game.

As the tournament comes to the end, it could be said that the second Archifel Invitational was a success, perhaps even more than the first! At least time the Drawkian team didn't get last place. With the bigger name schools involved, larger fanbases were brought in to Drawkland, and thus the games in Second Suns Arena had a better atmosphere, and of course the tourism board was happy.

The Archifel Tourism Board wishes every team good luck in the real competition to follow! Hopefully this made enough money that they'll bother with it next edition.

Vricksinburg State University Athletic Complex
Basketball Locker Room

Through the overall foul smell of post-practice adolescent men and the immaculately polished floor of the Pheasants' locker room, one man's voice cut above the showers on the other side of the room, one determined - or maybe just desperate - soul pleading for validation.

"Guys, you don't understand!" Carl Wentz, the seven foot flat center pleaded, "This is boom or bust for me!"

"Man no disrespect but uh," Tom Austerlitz, probably the team's best player, shrugged, "I've heard this talk before and I've got a night class to catch."

"You got no night classes this semester," Bruno Wehder shot back with a sadistic grin, "You're cruising on twelve credit hours."

"Nah I picked up uh, thermal," he bit his lip, smoke raising from his ears - or was it steam wafting over from the showers? - "Thermal Applications to Corporate Theater." He shot two finger guns to his teammates and backed out slowly, "I believe in you though Carl!"

Bruno shrugged, "Yeah, yeah I believe you Carl."

"Listen man," Carl - in dramatic fashion, reached his arm out, then brought it back and clenched a fist in front of his face as he talked, "I'm gonna light it up, you see how hard I grind man. Either I'm gonna be the best thing in Ranorian basketball, or I'm gonna be a high stakes door-to-door printer salesman. There's no plan B."

"I dunno Carl," Bruno rolled his eyes, "High stakes printer sales? That's one helluva plan B."

Carl's eyes shot up from his hand, mouth a bit agape, "No, no that was the joke. Like, that's not a plan B. It's printer sales. You didn't get it?"

Raw Scores for the Orange Sky Classic (RP to come later)

Postby Banija » Wed Mar 20, 2024 4:43 pm

Orange Sky Classic

Format explanation: This tournament includes all 8 NSCAA teams from Banija, one invitation from Ranoria(Richardson University), and 3 invitees from Cardenao. Minimum of Three games guaranteed per team. First two games are seeding/rivalry round- matches to ensure that teams can play their rivals this season that they otherwise wouldn't play. Which obviously creates an unbalanced schedule. Those matches create the seeding for the KO Stages. Top 4 get byes to the quarterfinals, the rest enter into the first round. From here, it is single elimination.

The tournament's organizers(the Orange Sky Airline) offer NIL incentives to all players who participate. First place team splits a total of $1 million NSDs, second place $500,000 NSDs, third place $250,000 NSDs, and fourth place $100,000 NSDs. Any player on a team who doesn't finish in first-fourth place will receive $1,000 NSDs each.

Venue: All games are played in Busukuma. Rivalry round games are split between Kizza I College campus(top 3 games), and the Loyola-Busukuma campus(bottom 3 games). All KO stage games will be played at the Kabaka's Court(the city's professional arena).

Ah the NSCAA, that tournament that for quite a long while was such an enigma for those who hailed from the Eternal Empire as they continued to struggle uphill against all the schools from nations more apt to the sport of basketball. It had been such an uphill struggle over the years that the VSC had at various times considered withdrawing the funding for the schools' basketball programs and no longer allowing them to submit them into the event as it was seen as a potentially fruitless struggle from which no hope could be derived. This is in large part due to the nature of how the results went, with usually only a few of the schools making the grand postseason tournament, known as the Ultra 64, but seeing their teams eliminated before the first weekend of the tournament had come to an end and their best teams falling by the wayside on the regular. It was the sort of futility that seemed like there was no escape from and that the schools were wasting the precious silver coins that the VSC had given to fund their programs on a task that was beyond their reach.

And then by all ways of the unexpected, the University of Hondo busted through the glass ceiling that had been holding the Vanorian schools down and rode their sharp shooting three point contingent to a championship game where they showcased years of frustration being finally vented out against a Cavsar team that stood no chance in the wake of such an entity. It had been a tournament of breakthroughs for schools from the Empire, as several of the schools made deep runs in the Ultra 64 and it had been a tournament where all eight of the Vanorian schools had been able to either auto-qualify or earn a spot from the selection committee. The Drawkland school in another year might have won or even been on the other end of a massive outburst, yet the stars had aligned that year and the Owls had a team that was second to none with their ability to make clutch threes and play a suffocating press defense off of a made basket. This was proven the following tournament where Hondo once more a deep run into the tournament but would fail to retain their title despite much of the same core of players who had won them the championship the edition before.

A few editions on now and the Vanorian schools are now considered to be in the good but perhaps not the elite echelon of the sport and the NSCAA as a whole. Vanorian schools more often than not are able to compete in their respective conferences at the top, jostling for the regular season crown and the auto-qualifying spot that can be earned their or in the conference tournament and the second chance at an auto-qualifying position. It takes a string of bad luck and form these days to see a team from the Empire not be able to be competitive and to be in and around their peers that believe they are capable of first winning their conference and then the dreams of deep runs into the Ultra 64 or perhaps even an outside chance of winning the entire competition outright. It is a far cry from where the state of the game was within the Empire a handful of years ago and the success with the NSCAA has also seen it be translated into the IBC and the national team where the Dragons have broken through their own glass ceiling and seem capable of winning a championship there if they can manage to avoid Quebecois opposition.

When it comes to the schools competing in the contest, the most popular and supported of those is of course Raynor University in the Empire's capital city but they have often seen struggles and up and downs in the NSCAA despite having the best facilities and often what is perceived as the best recruiting class among Vanorians schools. Part of the Five Star conference which will see their conference tournament in Cassadaigua, the Rockets will have to believe they are among the top three contenders for the regular season crown along with Mount Ester from Quebec and Raikennax, the latter merely because of the fact Drawkland schools have a way of rising to the top regardless of their perceived strength. Mar Sara Tech is largely considered the second best university in the nation and find themselves in the Salamantica Conference this go around, which will see their tournament hosted in Quebec. The lack of a Quebec school gives the Raiders a lot of hope that they will be able to be at the top however their huge rivals from the NSCF are apart of the conference, with Sadeg State from Drawkland entering in as the preseason favorite for the conference. The two teams have a heated rivalry on the gridiron that has translated at times to the hardwood and the Raiders will be hoping to do better on the hardwood than their team has fared against the Drawkland opposition in gridiron over the last several years.

Hondo will have their quest to return to the pinnacle of the game in the Big Seven Seven Conference, which will have its tournament in Drawkland but feature no school from the nation. New Lakeland of Cassadaigua looks to be the biggest competition for the once champions from early predictions but these conferences have a way of having a few surprises and it would come as no huge surprise if Ranoria State or LeBois Santura would end up giving a bit of pressure to the Owls in their quest to get back to the top. Much to everyone's surprise, last season the team that went the furthest from the Empire was Turbani Tech in the Ultra 64 despite having one of the smallest fanbases and enrollments of the school who participate. That run earned them a trip to the preseason tournament Archifel Invitational, where they won their opening game but stumbled in their two remaining games before winning the fourth placed game. It will hopefully mean the team will be ready to go for their conference play in the Newlands Conference as they have to contend with two true blue bloods of the tournament with Elmanden District and Northern Moravica along with Concord Heights Beauty School who have shown quite a bit of mettle in the past.

The Naval Academy in Rinaldi will not be most pleased with their conference placement as they have Old Mountain and Loyola-Istria and have that same dreaded feeling of being a third or fourth wheel that Turbani Tech does in their conference, especially with a few other solid teams to contend with. It continues a streak where Rinaldi seems to draw the short straw for Vanorian teams when getting their conference placement as every season they tend to have the most difficult. The Pink 14 where South Caddonia finds itself would seem quite the wide open conference if not for the fact that it is also where the aforementioned Cavsar reside and will be the heavy favorite from the off to grab the conference title and autoberth. Everlin might have a good shout to win the Flying Drawk as while a few good schools there are none that quite jump off the paper as a proverbial favorite and the Jungle Cats have proven to be a surprise package in the past, why not once more? Lastly there is Sabinal State in the Calania Conference and they have a bit of a tough ask in trying to down Bunyoro as well as Ducentu State, both of which have great Ultra 64 pedigree. It doesn't look great on paper but if they can be that third best team and maybe even pip their better opposition in the tournament, there is no reason why they can't earn a berth out of the conference.

Scoping out the NSCAA’s,
by Kenzie Sherman, Concord Heights Times

For some schools, the 15th edition of the NSCAA Basketball tournament is underway, and this includes the 4-0 University of Concord Heights and the 1-3 Briannatown College as the Eternal and Woodlands Conferences kicked off the schedule. For everyone else, competition will be getting going soon and as a nation we will be hoping to win our fourth title. It has been a little while since New Lakeland University won theirs, and the competition has been dominated by Drawkland and Banija, with a cameo appearance by NASCAR Cup Series along the way. Cassadagan schools are known for holding their own within the conferences, and typically we have been well represented in the Ultra 64 tournament, but once you get to the Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight rounds, our schools tend to fade away. Can things be different this year?

Quite honestly, I don’t see anything about our schools that suggests that they will have a better performance this around, but whenever you are close, as we are, you’re going to have a shot. Here at the Concord Heights Times, we are obviously partial towards UCH and the Beauty School, but as we say every time this begins, we’re even going to root for places like Brat Tech, which is obviously unthinkable during our season. Now, UCH did start well in the Eternal, but they haven’t played Drawkland’s Cemmendy Tech or Banija’s University of Moravica yet. Those two are also 4-0, and together, us three schools make up the Conference’s 4-0 sides. Courtney Larkin, the two-time player of the year at home, has average 24 points per game in those four contests, and seems to be on top of form. The senior told us, “This is really the only thing left for me to accomplish in college basketball. We’ve had some good runs, but we want to do more than that. For me, this is obviously it, but I know UCH will always keep coming back to this.” Larkin figures to be the #1 overall pick in the upcoming in the CBA draft. I would be worried if she wasn’t.

Briannatown College, the champion of the Northern Territory, was hoping to surprise people, but a 1-3 start in the Woodlands is not what they want to see. While the symbolic reasoning for inviting them was obvious, skeptics have pointed to the fact that even though they were the best team up North, they were only 7-12 against traditional Cassadagan collegiate competition. Is the NSCAA going to be too much for them? Well, the one game that they won was against Drawk Corps University, so there is hope for them. Unfortunately, they could not beat anyone else. That win will allow us to hold out some hope.

We’ll now look forward to the appearances of the other six!

College Basketball Is Back, Cardenaoan Team Previews Inside!!

Hello everybody, hello fellow Cardenaoans, hello dear reader, hello you, yes you, it is once again that time! College basketball season, the one time of the year where we can gather and throw our support behind, not only our favorite Cardenaoan college team, but behind the seven other teams representing the Blue and Gold in the prestigious NSCAA tournament. Casual fans will likely be somewhat familiar with the teams from LeBois Santura University and New Cardonia State, but there is a lot of native talent beyond those two teams. So read on and read quickly my dear, for we don’t have much time to produce this article; here’s your quick guide with quick facts! We’re going to start off with the highest achieving team in the pre-season, and that is none other than Sargaara Technical Institute.

The STI Penetrators headed to Banija for the Orange Sky Classic, a fun opportunity to clash against teams from Banija and Ranoria. The Penetrators play runs through phenom point-center Dragan Stoikchev (7’, 291lbs) who regularly sets up highlight plays through his creative passing, technique, and efficient scoring from all three levels to create a regularly unsolvable problem. 18.5ppg/7.3apg/5.2rpg on 57% field goal/33.3% 3 point shooting. Trust me when I say, the numbers support the eye test. Everything flowed through Dragan who posted a 13/11/10 statline to start the Classic in a 93-70 drumming of fellow Cardenaoan school, the Costa Alto Military Academy, and that set the tone for the rest of the tournament. Stoikchev, from the rugged mountains of Eastern Cardenao, had another commanding display against Hangaza State, firing the Penetrators to a comfortable 87-63 win. Freshman point guard Misaroto Garapolis of Sareña showed why he’s so highly rated as a playmaking 1 as he recorded 11 assists, while Junior Bobbie Sckrooks went 5/7 from behind the 3-point line. From there, Sargaara advanced to the quarterfinals and took on yet another Banijan school, this time the University of Bunyoro. For the first time thus far, the Penetrators found themselves on the receiving end of penetration as they failed to shore up the paint, letting the Banijans run up a double-digit lead by halftime. Whatever head coach Matt LeMack said at halftime had to be one helluva speech as the Penetrators came out hungry in the second half, rallying behind Dragan who put up 19 in the second half after a fairly quiet first. Ultimately, the Cardenaoan side found their form as they ran away to a 98-79 victory, the first time they failed to win by 20+ points. A disappointment to be sure, but it was on to the semi-finals where…another Banijan team awaited. Northern Moravica is as good as any team in the NSCAA tournament and have pretty good odds at making it far into the Big Dance…but the Big Dance isn’t the Orange Sky Classic, and unfortunately for them……they got Penetrated. It was a close game, with the teams battling out through various lead changes, but it was Sargaara who came out on top thanks to a hot run from Kaysen Cucho in the final minutes, the junior small-forward nailed a big goahead bucket before blocking the Banijans follow up effort and dishing it to Dragan for another three and the final nail in the coffin. STI 84-77 Northern Moravica.

The Final of the Orange Sky Classic is something every athlete dreams of playing in regardless of sport. It is the Orange Sky Classic. It’s Banija. It’s college basketball. It’s a million NSD on the line. This is what you dream about as a kid. Unfortunately for the Penetrators, while you usually dream of winning, reality can often be disappointing, and so it was as Sargaara Technical Institute fell at the final hurdle, losing out to yet another Banijan school in the form of Kizza I College off an incredible last second buzzer beating three point shot. No fault to the lads, they played their hearts out and head into the NSCAA regular season with a full head of steam. Oh, and the players are $500,000NSD richer, which makes them some of the richest citizens in Cardenao, well done!

Next up on our analysis list is Alexandria University. The coastal college does two things well. #1: They are pretty good at scoring points. #2: They are pretty good at stopping the other team from scoring points. When you think about it, these are important aspects to a game of basketball. And so hopes were…well, not exactly high, but there was some optimism as the Crimson Golds jetted off to Drawkland (or however that works) to take part in the Archifel Invitational. The hot, tropical climate meant the Cardenaoan team was essentially playing at home, and they got off to a hot start in the afternoon as they took on NIT Despina at the Second Suns Arena. At first, the Alexandrians seemed to struggle with the pace of the game as they fell to a 16-5 deficit, but star junior defensive center Tom Parliamance got his act together and blocked three shots in a row and the Swordsmen were back in action. D’Angelo Fox was a thrill to watch as the second-year point guard showcased incredible agility and athleticism as he weaved around the court and fired off imaginative passes that resulted in easy looks. While the battle was intense, Alexandria United emerged victorious at the final whistle with a 86-76 win to start the Archifel Invitational. Next up? Concord Heights Beauty School who went 26-4 on their way to winning the Cassadagan National Championship. Yeah, they’re legit and led by 6’4 senior point guard Taylor Finnegan, and Mr. Finnegan, who dreams of styling senior citizens, styled up the Alexandria Swordsmen as he ran up a double-double and put Crimson Golds to bed in an 84-70 mauling. Not great for Alexandria as the offense dried up and junior small forward Alejandro Liulia virtually disappeared from the game, so a lot of work to be done as they went into the third place playoff. The final challenger was Turbani Tech from Valanora, and the boys had to feel good about this matchup. While the Turbani’s were certainly a sharp shooting team that would present a challenge, the fact is that their backcourt is seriously undersized; a 5’9 154lbs point guard and 5’10 163 #2 is not a great combination. Team Alexandria recognized that and exploited it to great effect as D’Angelo and shooting guard Mac Zollinger simply backed their defenders down into the paint and flipped it up. The small ball approach did cause some issues for Alexandria University on defense, with Iver Hagen able to set up and exploit mismatches, but the game was always flowing in Alexandria’s favor and, sure enough, they emerged victorious to claim third in the tournament. So a hot start for the Swordsmen as they clashed against some real quality teams and will undoubtedly be excited for the upcoming season.

With those two teams and their preseasons out of the way, let’s take a look at the other six teams representing Cardenao in the NSCAA tournament. First up is the Küsbon College Miners, a defensive powerhouse who poses an intriguing offense this year under first year head coach Julian Monroe. The name of the game for the Miners is suffocating the paint, forcing offensive players into off-balance shots as they’re herded away from the key. Freshman center Zach McDaniels is an incredible athlete for his size (6’10 260lbs), and has the agility and stamina to cover the basket by himself. Add on the defensive expertise of shooting guard Keerian Giovanbattista and hustle play from senior PG Castro Calhoun and you’ve got a high-energy defensive unit that can beat offenses down. On the other side of the ball, the Miners try to feed the rock down into the paint for McDaniels to do some crazy shit or junior PF Drew Kristoffsen to face his opponent up and drive to the hoop. If that’s not on, the team shows good patience to find an open shooter, usually Castro Calhoun, to take that 3-point shot or recycle the offense. It’s hard to make a prediction for a team like Küsbon College, they don’t have a star player, they’re not incredibly exceptional at one area of play, they’re just a good team that relies on the sum of its parts; if they gel well, they could be one of the surprises of the season.

Next up is the Costa Alto Military Academy Jets, and let me tell you, they play with every bit of the confidence of fighter jet pilots. Every single play they’re looking for a highlight, every play they try to force some crazy basket, it’s never an option for Costa Alto to take the wide-open three, no they have to do some shit like a behind the back pass to the wide open shooter, who hurls a cross court pass to the center who sets up an alley-oop for the point guard. It’s just totally ridiculous and I love every second of it. Sophomore point guard Blake Augustino is a lethal scorer from all three levels and has the athleticism and dribbling ability to open up the court, while senior guard Merick O’Brian is one of the best pure three-and-D players in the nation. An interesting component of this team is junior center Jezaro Principe, who plays as a sort of post playmaker, serving as a high-level distributor from down on the block. He’s not much of an extended scorer but he knows how to get his and he knows how to set his team up. There’s a lot of questions about senior forward Funstrinston Jaopez Jr. after he missed all last season with a knee injury, but when the power forward is on and he’s stretching the floor and nailing all sorts of three-pointers, Funstrinston adds a unique dimension to this already trippy offense. On defense, it’s high energy gamble plays all over the court. While this does mean the Jets give up easy baskets, they do have the highest forced turnover rate in Cardenaoan basketball and make a living off those fast break points. I wouldn’t expect them to go far with their style of play, it’s just too loose, too fast, too scattered, but damn they will be exciting to watch. To that point, Costa Alto got absolutely demolished in the Orange Sky Classic, losing all three of their games by over 15 points, yikes.

Donning the famous blue and orange of the LeBois Santura University Broncos, it’s the LeBois Santura University Broncos. After a historically successful year in college football, the Broncos take to the court hoping for similar success. Much like their gridiron side, the Broncos basketball team plays at a very high tempo, cycling the ball quickly between their players to open up scoring opportunities; they play fast, they play hard, they play to outscore you. Leading the charge is true freshman Angus Lon Jrey Vernon, 9 out of 10 times the point guard is looking to score the ball, which he can do in a variety of ways thanks to his three-level scoring and his creative dribbling, though he tends to use body feints and tricky movement as opposed to flashy dribbling. Pierre LeGoff, the junior sharpshooting guard, is perhaps the best pure 3-point shooter in the country and he will make defenses pay for the most miniscule lapse in concentration. Small forward Jake Massacano is perhaps the most underrated yet important part of the team, he’s just a solid all-around player who always seems to do the right thing. He makes the extra pass, he holds his shot to feed a better option, he runs the PNR with the best of them, and he can reliably find the bucket. In such a high pressure offense, having a glue guy who facilitates everyone else's success is vital. Then there’s Kawak Whittier, the muscle strapped power forward who smashes his way down to the basket and sophomore center Max Rowland is tall, long, and knows how to work his way to the hoop. On defense, the Broncos take it easy, no way around that, it’s like defense is where they rest for offense which……kinda works. It worked in the opening game of the Orange Sky Classic when they demolished Richardson U, fuck them right BSU fans?, 90-60 but they got pulled apart by the Banijan school Northern Moravica before Richardson beat them again in the quarterfinals, 89-83. Not great Bob, not great.

The Niccostrato Naval Academy Mariners basketball team plays a classic brand of basketball. Tough, scrappy play on both sides of the ball, clean the glass, protect the rock, work the ball through the rotations to create and convert close range shots…3 point shots are for pansies, this is real men’s basketball. So we’ll see how that goes. Dwanye Chen is a shifty, sneaky creative player who has a deep bag of hesitations, shake and backs, slinky movement, he’s impossible to pin down and creates and scores equally well. Oscar Belnap, the junior small forward, will likely have the ball in his hands the majority of the time when it comes to actually attacking the hoop, at 6’9 253lbs, he’s on the bigger side for the position but he’s so smooth and inventive in his approach to the basket that he’ll spin right past you and easily lay it in faster than you can blink. Much of Niccostrato’s success will be on Jarell Williamson, at 7’1 the senior center is a massive presence in the paint but he’ll need to bring the scoring to a whole new level if the team is going to compete with the big boys; he’s elite on the glass but with his size and athleticism, averaging less than 10 points per game is incredibly disappointing. Defensively the team plays a classic 2-3 zone, and they actually make it work thanks to their communication, team based defending, and generally high motors. Tom McDonald is the man here, the senior power forward anchors the defensive unit with his vision, play recognition, and innate defending sense. I wouldn’t put a big money bet on the Mariners to go far, they’re a fun glimpse into the past, but the game has evolved and I can’t see them keeping up.

Another staple of the Cardenoan NSCF contingent, this time it’s the New Cardonia State Thunderhawks rolling up in style. The Thunderhawks have built themselves a simple yet successful gameplan and I could see them surprising quite a few folks. The premise is simple, have three great three point shooters, a gigantic center who loves going to work down low, and then at shooting guard have Deacon St. John, the freshman wide receiving star for the Thunderhawks football team. The kid is the single most athletically gifted Cardenaoan basketball player and he will make the defender’s life hell. He’s faster than you, he’s stronger than you, he can outjump you without trying, and he never runs out of energy. And good luck trying to screen him, he’s got a footballer’s strength and that leaves a bruise. All he’s going to do is attack the hoop, slash through the paint and use his superior athleticism to do what he wants, it’s a great game plan. Pack the paint to deny Deacon and you leave the 3 open. Clamp down behind the arc and you give the paint up to Jerome Crawford at center, playing tight D on those options and that leaves room for Deacon to do his thing, it’s hard to have an answer for this team on offense. Defensively though, the team does struggle, it’s just an inefficient scheme that constantly causes confusion when the Thunderhawks make a switch on defense, in fact they were one of the worst teams in the country at defending the pick and roll. So, if you can’t defend the most common play in all of basketball, not really sure you’re where I want to put my money. Good luck though!

That brings us to the eighth and final team from the Cardenao NSCAA delegation, it’s the Cascade Tradesmen College Tradesmen. I’ll tell you two things right off the bat here. First, I friggin love this team man. Second, they are absolutely awful and I say that in the most loving way possible. Let’s get this clear, the Tradesmen are exactly that…tradesmen. This isn’t a regular college with an athletic department, no, these are electricians, painters, HVAC technicians in training, not athletes hoping to go pro. Take Big John Franklin, the team’s junior point guard, he’s training to become a carpenter. Xavi ‘Daci’ Dacosta, the two-way anchor at center, he’s getting his forklift certification. Matteo Atkinson? He’s actually kinda decent compared to the rest of the team……and that’s because the senior shooting guard is the only one on the team who played ball in high school! See, what’s not to love about this group of guys?? Answer: their level of play. They are bad, just so bad, the only reason they score is because of the natural volume and flow of a basketball game… eventually you have to score something. Anyway, they’re bad but fun to root for after a few drinks, I’d advise everyone to pick the Tradesmen as their loveable second team. Still ain’t putting any money on them though.

So that just about does it for our team review! It wasn’t particularly good but you already knew that. As for how the Cardenaoan teams will do in the tournament? Hell if I know, good I hope. I guess we’ll find out.

Introduction to Quebecois Intercollegiate Sports
Basketball

Collegiate sports are generally well-liked, appreciated and no doubt followed in Quebec and Shingoryeo. Now, while there remains a major debate as to whether college football or basketball is considered to be more popular in the country that is multipolar in sporting interests, there is little doubt that basketball is probably the only sport that could challenge football in terms of revenue and spectatorship.

This has become more evident in the recent years, not so much because of basketball's own growth in the Arrosian nation - the number of basketballers signing up in youth or school clubs have not dramatically increased in Quebec over past twenty years - but because of other unenforced factors, with baseball having climate-induced limitations in much of the country, (ice) hockey undergoing a minor but evident decline in attendance and media interest. It also bears the benefit of possessing little to no conflict with two other major indoor sports in volleyball and handball, thanks to the general tendency for basketball and volleyball viewers to watch both in Quebec, while the latter is considered a summer sport rather than winter.

Still, it is hard to ignore the continued popularity of college basketball in Quebec as itself, especially as a continuation of the gridiron football season that mostly dot late Summer and Autumn. It is a sport that is enjoyed by both urban and rural collegiate settings, one that is complimented nicely by the relatively lower number of teams in both QBL and QWBL with sixteen each, and sees relative parity across the Quebecois Intercollegiate Sports's five conferences. Combined with consistent churn of narratives brought by the league, whether it be the Riley Jeon-Keane vs. Allison Dubois rivalry of Queen's-Farrer teams in early-mid 2020s for women's tournament, or the more longstanding Mount Ester-Yoseo rivalry famous for its coast-to-coast nature, the state of college basketball is even and stable across the nation, and one that barring a major burst of bubble across sports broadcasters, should stand fine in years to come.

The QIS basketball structure is simple and easy to understand. There are five conferences of twelve to fourteen teams that are geographically based, though linguistic differences do exist between RSECQ and B1G, both conferences located in the nation's central region). Most of the regular season is played within the conference with a double round-robin fixture amounting from 22 to 26 games, though the remainder of the schedule incorporates a non-conference slate of matches usually played around winter break that stretches over Christmas and New Year tournaments. The number of regular-season matches are usually combined to be no more than 30 games a season for each team per QIS regulations, with preseason and holiday tournaments' play-off rounds not included.

Top eight teams on each conference progress into the Conference championship tournament afterwards, with the teams set to play for conference title and the automatic qualification ticket into the twelve-team QIS national championships. The conference champions, as well as multiple additional qualifiers and annual host-team, advance into the 12-team playoffs, with top four seeds securing their place into the quarterfinals. Both men and women's championships, however, do not protect eligibility for host teams unless they record over .500 in overall record.

See below for rough distribution of men and women's tournament tickets:

QIS Men's Championship -- 12 TEAMS
Salamantic-12 - SAL-12: 2
Southwestern University Athletics - SWUA: 2
Big Ten - B1G: 2
Reseau du sport etudiant centrale du Quebec - RSECQ: 1
Maritime University Sport - MUS: 2
Additional Qualifiers: 2
Host Side: 1 (conditional upon overall record)
QIS Women's Championship -- 12 TEAMS
Salamantic-12 - SAL-12: 1
Southwestern University Athletics - SWUA: 2
Big Ten - B1G: 3
Reseau du sport etudiant centrale du Quebec - RSECQ: 1
Maritime University Sport - MUS: 1
Additional Qualifiers: 3
Host Side: 1 (conditional upon overall record)

Quebecois basketball is professionally known to be a bit of mixed bag in terms of style, with the men known to be driven more by physicality and individual play, while the women rely a lot more on defensive schemes and motion offences. This is partly true in the QIS level, where greater talent discrepancy exists between teams, and dynasties relatively easier to establish on conference level. With talent pool mostly even across the country, and nationwide recruiting somewhat common, there is a greater flexibility for the coaches in more established to choose in terms of their preferred style of coaching, and thus you would see great variance between triangle-led Queen's College, run-and-gun Saint-Benedict's and Farrer team that employs 2-3 defence. This allows for QIS basketball to be remain competitive, and at times ahead of its gridiron or hockey equivalents, in terms of strategic diversity and thus public interest.

Historically basketball has been an odd sport in terms of gender segregation, in part due to height-based differences but also the largely-inversed nature of popularity in the sport where women's basketball had taken hold of popularity earlier due to its competitive success at the Quebecois Commonwealth level and then in the Olympics, while the men, while always having talent, had taken a longer route to find international relevance. With modern-era Team Quebec possessing a mixed-gender team that is allowed by its ability to field larger team entries, at least in the preliminary rounds of IBC (this does not apply in AOBC, Arrosiabasket or the CommonwealthBasket), so has the Quebecois sides in the NSCAA with several schools, who have national championship sides past Elite Eight level in both men and women, fielding a mixed-gender side. For the course of NSCAA 15, they will be represented by Coloratura State, Mount Ester, Nideyinan, and Queen's College who have met said internal requirement made by the QIS dating back decades.

NSCAA: Week 1

Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer, Nova Calania - Hello I'm here to cover the NSCAA and honestly, this is not the job I applied for. I sent my resume to cover the World Cup. The real World Cup. The one that you don't need to add the name of the sport because everyone knows it's soccer, football, association football, futbol or however you name it. I didn't got the job. They asked me if I want to cover college basketball instead. I know nothing about basketball but I accepted. Basketball is a fringe sport in Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer and in Nova Calania. Rules are hard to understand and they score too many points, it gives me a headache trying to keep the score. I preffer Ko-orenite soccer, because the way they play, scores are very low and that's what I like.

Well, the first week (matchdays 1 to 4) have already been played and there's one university that stands out, the Uniwersytet Nowa Kalanianska. The Aztecs are 4th in their conference with 3 wins and 1 loss. However it's not the same with the three other universities. Burnham State has 2 wins and 2 losses. My alma mater, Université nationale de Saint-Jean-Jacques-sur-Mer, has 1 win and 3 losses and this is the same for the Shanzhou University Dragons. This university have the smallest roster in NSCAA with only 5 players and no subs. Players should be tired for playing the full 60 minutes.

(BBS) Beck vs Pope 1/2

Postby Drawkland » Fri Mar 22, 2024 3:04 pm

It was a special time on campus in Sadeg. DOCA’s basketball championship had already been played, and though Sadeg State had to settle for a quarterfinal exit, the basketball season had not yet concluded. Yes, it was that special year again. It was time for the NSCAA, the multiverse’s premier collegiate basketball experience, pitting the best of the best against schools from nations so irrelevant you wonder how they got the funds to enter the tournament at all. State fans had enjoyed watching their kids in gold and navy blue duke it out on the international stage every 3-4 years for decades now. It was an exciting feeling on campus that few other schools in Drawkland could relate to.

For Brooklyn Beck, it was just as special, if not even more so. She was only a child when Sadeg State went on the magical run in NSCAA 10 to capture the title, but she can remember the championship game against Moravica like it was yesterday. And though she wasn’t yet alive when it happened, her mother Elie Beck (then Elie Cooper) was on the Skyhawk team that went 31-0 only to lose in the Ultra 64 title game against the hated University of Cenial. Even though Brooklyn didn’t play much basketball anymore, it was still one of her favorite tournaments to watch.

Now, though, there was an opportunity to do more than watch. Brooklyn had been recruited by Sadeg State athletics, not just for football and baseball, but for basketball, too. Regrettably, due to time and energy constraints, Brooklyn had to decline the invitation to play basketball from SSU’s head coach, Aldus Pope. Football was the big opportunity that Brooklyn was provided in very few places, and she knew mountains had to be moved to even allow her to play it in the first place. She couldn’t give that up. Meanwhile, baseball was her first love and something she fell into naturally. If football didn’t work out, she was sure to get drafted by some PBL team, unless she busted hard at Sadeg State. Being a two-sport athlete in college is very difficult, doing three is nigh impossible. Thus, basketball was sent to the wayside.

Brooklyn couldn’t shake the idea of playing in the NSCAA, though. Sure, she hadn’t seriously played basketball since graduating high school. Yes, it’s possible that Coach Pope may hold some resentment for getting the shaft between the three sports programs that recruited Brooklyn at State. Certainly, Brooklyn would be a rotation or bench option at best. Still, she felt like it was worth a shot. Shooters shoot, after all.

So there Brooklyn stood, outside the athletic department office building on Sadeg State’s campus. It was a stylish modern building bisecting the large concourse between Skyhawks Gridiron Park and Skyhawk Valley Arena. It was the middle of the day, just after lunch, and Brooklyn had a break between her classes at that time. Despite the feeling in the back of Brooklyn’s mind telling her to pull away, she pushed forward, heading into the cool AC of the lobby.

The athletic department entryway was a large room, more of a hall, with the ceiling three levels high. On the ground floor there were various display rooms, showing off trophies and photos and souvenirs of past triumphs. On one side was the Skyhawk Athletic Hall of Fame, showing off the greatest athletes to ever don the gold and blue. Brooklyn was there a decade ago when her father Dustin was inducted into that very institution.

There was no time for admiring the silverware, though. Brooklyn was on a mission. She paused for a moment to admire the NSCAA 10 championship trophy, which was proudly displayed in the lobby, then moved directly to the elevator. She rocked back and forth on her heels while she waited to move to the 5th floor, where she knew the coaching staffs of each major Sadeg State sports were located. Over the past couple years, she’d been to Brand Manlio’s personal office a couple times to speak about her progress as a player. Especially the last DOCA season, where Brooklyn got her first snaps and starts as a college football player, she had to spend several hours in that office, searching for guidance and support from her coach.

She had to walk just past the offices of the football coaching staff, though. Instead, she walked to the next door, labeled ‘Sadeg State Basketball.’ She pushed open the door after a moment. She was greeted once she walked in by the secretary of the basketball coaches.

“Hello, how may I help you?” The secretary said automatically, before turning her head to look at who had walked in. “Ah, Brooklyn Beck! What brings you to our office?”

“Ah, is Coach Pope in?” Brooklyn asked vaguely. She smiled, or maybe it was a grimace. “I just wanted to talk with him real quick.”

“Hmm, he doesn’t have a meeting, but let me see if he’s free.” The secretary tapped into a button interface on her desk, and typed on her keyboard. A few moments later, she nodded. “He’ll see you. Go on ahead.”

“Thanks!” Brooklyn grinned genuinely, and headed towards the office marked ‘Aldus Pope.’ She took a deep breath, then pushed open the door.

“Hello?” Aldus Pope was sitting at his desk, with a neutral expression on his face. He peered at Brooklyn through his narrow glasses, and motioned at the seat across from his desk. “Please, sit.”

“Hi, coach,” Brooklyn said as casually as possible as she sat. She had talked to Pope on a couple occasions at Sadeg State events, but this was the first time she’d been to his office.

“What brings you here?” Pope squinted, a look of suspicion hinted on his face.

“Well …” Brooklyn hesitated. The feeling in the room was cold. She knew that what she was going to ask was foolish, but she had already gone this far. There was no turning back now. “I was wondering what your plans are for the NSCAA.”

“Plans?” Pope scoffed. “The plan is to win. You came here to ask me that?”

“Not exactly.” Brooklyn shifted awkwardly in her seat. “I was thinking more along the lines of roster construction. You know, what kind of squad you were going to bring.”

“I see.” Pope leaned back in his chair. “Typically for the NSCAA we bring a 10-man squad, keeping our injury-prone and still-developing players off the court. This is actually rather convenient, since we had five guys with longer-term injuries by the time the season ended.”

“Of course.” Brooklyn nodded. She scooted a little closer to the desk, but found herself unable to make eye contact with Coach Pope. “So … do you anticipate having any holes in the roster? Any openings that need to be filled?”

“Really.” Pope replied flatly. His face turned into a mask of disdain. “I can’t say I’m surprised.”

“What do you mean?” Brooklyn asked, a slight tone of unease in her voice.

“I know you’re a bold player, but this is something else.” Pope’s burst into a laugh, quick and short. “Brooklyn Beck has the audacity to give me the cold shoulder, after I made a spot for her on my recruiting board. She goes off and plays her beloved baseball, tramps around on the gridiron like her dad, then has the gall to walk into my office two weeks before the NSCAA season and ask for a roster spot. Despicable!”

“I mean, I technically didn’t-”

“Don’t ask innocent. You’re telling me you walked into my office on a Monday in the spring, unsolicited, so you could talk shop about roster moves? No ulterior motive whatsoever?”

“Well, I didn’t really expect-”

“So why come at all? You should already know that the answer is no. There is no universe in which the answer should be anything other than a no. You haven’t even played basketball outside of a rec center in two years, and you think you’d still be on par with the talent I have putting on Skyhawk tank tops? Please.”

“I’m sorry,” Brooklyn sighed, shoulders slumping. “I just thought it’d be worth a shot, just in case. Y’know, my mom played for this team, in this tournament. It would mean a lot to her.”

“Yes, your mother was a great player. Very talented in the paint. She did great work for us when she was a Skyhawk.” Pope folded his arms. “But you know what she did? She committed to my program. She toiled away on the bench and in the gym for years to get her chance. She put in the hard work for my program, and she was rewarded for it. But you, Ms. Beck, think you can trot in here and be given the same opportunity for none of the work. And don’t you dare mention your father. That may get you plenty of cred across the hall, but the Beck name means nothing to me. When Elie played for me, she was Cooper. That’s all she ever was to me. That was a player that helped build the new Skyhawk dynasty on the court. You are her daughter, but you’ve made your decision already. You can’t always get what you want.”

“I understand,” Brooklyn replied after a long moment of processing Coach Pope’s rant. She wasn’t exactly sad, but there was a heavy feeling of disappointment weighing in her chest. “There was just something in my mind telling me I should give it a shot. I’m sorry for wasting your time.”

“No hard feelings, of course.” Pope’s face went back to a neutral glare. “But somebody in this building needs to tell you the way things are. I have a feeling that very few people in your life have told you the word ‘no.’”

“Plenty have told me the word ‘no,’” Brooklyn retorted, feeling a bit of fire in her gut. “And if I listened to them, I wouldn’t be playing football here. Yet, here I am.”

“Well, maybe you should’ve listened to those people if you wanted to play in the NSCAA tournament,” Pope sighed. “I would apologize, but I’m not sorry. These are just the natural consequences of your actions.”

“Yeah.” Brooklyn reluctantly stood up from her seat. “Sorry again for wasting your time.”

“My door is often open,” Pope replied. “You have time to change your mind. For this, though, it’s too late.”

“I get it.” Brooklyn turned to leave. “See you around, Coach.”

Brooklyn rushed out of the office, offering a half-hearted thanks to the secretary as she headed out of the athletic department building. She momentarily considered stopping in the baseball office to have a chat with the baseball coach, James Denton, but decided against it. She would have to walk across campus to get to her next class anyway, she didn’t want to put herself in a time crunch.

As she walked back out into the sunlight of early spring, she processed her conversation with Aldus Pope. He was right, of course, and Brooklyn thought she ought to be thankful that she only got reamed as much as she did. Another coach would’ve refused to see her at all, or talked even more of an earful for such a ridiculous request. In passing, she admired the exterior of Skyhawks Gridiron Park, her home in the fall, and soon to be home again in the late spring and summer for the NSCF. She briefly wondered if she would be getting the Week 1 start.

As she walked, Brooklyn felt a growing pride within herself for even having the balls to speak to Coach Pope in the first place. Maybe if her workload got lighter in her later years, when she’d mostly be taking cushy business courses, she could afford to fit basketball into her schedule. After all, she still enjoyed playing the sport, and often dominated in pickup games among her football and baseball teammates. Even though it didn’t work out, Brooklyn smiled as she recounted the conversation in her head. Shooters shoot!

NSCAA - The Long Road I

Postby TJUN-ia » Fri Mar 22, 2024 4:38 pm

The NSCAA...one of the longest roads a TJUN-ian team has to take to try and accomplish something...which is saying something because the WCC exists. 30 Games, A Conference Tournament and the Postseason itself...either the highs of the Ultra 64 and the complacency of the DCIT. Eight of TJUN-ia's best basketball programs once again suit up for a taste of the madness...but how would it all start?

Central State
The Grizzlies were #1 last season and the wanted to prove this was not a fluke...and it showed here. Jasper Technical, Williamstown Tech, NIT-Despina and Macuebona all taken down for a 4-0 start for the TJUN-ian #1

UW-Wollongmatta Bay
Wisdom on the Bay went 2-2, beating Silver Coast State College and Nowa Kalanianska before falling to Moravica and Southern Angler. Not great, but also not bad from the Wallabies.

CPortside
The Ms of the College of Portside also went 2-2, but they did it the back-and-forth way. They lost to Richmond, beat Costa Alto, lost to Nacional before finally beating Belle Haven.

Al-Hilal
AHU's Islanders were hoping to start things off on the right track on their pilgrimage back to the U64 and this start certainly did the trick, with only Elmanden District giving them the L in this opening split. New Cardonia State, Yoseo-Montevicio and The Legacy Institute all fell down and as a result, life in the Newlands has gotten off to a good start.

UCarib-Port Town
The Green Flash of UCPT did surprisingly well, only allowing Sabinal State to walk away with a win. Morston College, Groenwald National and Bunyoro were all shocked...and just like that, Port Town is 3-1.

Hongxai
HPU are looking to bounce back this season and they would also start 2-2. They lost to St. Michael the Archangel, beat Wyckham, lost to Farrer by 20 before beating Morissland A&M by 24. An interesting start in B77 for the Dragons.

Carlandas
Wait...Los Leones went 3-1? That is correct and considering that the sole loss was to Mar Sara Tech, this wasn't a poor showing at all from UC. Those who fell to the sword were Shanzhou, Indigo Bay Academy and, best of all, Richardson.

Pacifico
Considering they were the only losing school in all of TJUN-ia last season, 2-2 is perfectly fine for Los Surfistas. The beat Destiny (lol) and Lake Wakiso State before falling to Raynor and Vladivostok.

"All The Pressure Is Gone."
Richardson Basketball Looks Forward To Stress-Free NSCAA After Toppling Loyola-Istria In the Orange Sky Classic

Plus: Why Hasn't the NSCAA Drawn The Best Of Ranorian Basketball?

Image
Talented Governors senior Frankin Jones led the team in scoring for the second straight time in a win over Loyola-Istria

Sure, the Orange Sky Classic is a preseason tournament who's results have no bearings on the greater NSCAA season, but for Richardson, who have squared off with the Blue Thunder in each of the last three international seasons, it was the biggest game of the campaign. In NSCAA 13, most of the team transferred along with their head coach being fired after the second loss, in part due to the entire student body turning against them after the first loss. This rivalry, the biggest in college football, has extended far beyond the gridiron now with the basketball teams practically hinging their seasons on that success.

Well, the Blue Thunder actually have a championship to their name, so maybe their seasons aren't entirely dependent on it. Richardson's success on the court is much more modest.

"I feel a weight off my shoulders," said senior Franklin Jones, indisputably the best player on this squad, after the win, "That game was everything. Had to take them down, and I've led this team to do that twice now. We can play loose and locked in. Playing with house money, everything else is a bonus. My legacy as a Governor is pretty much set in stone - now I just get to do a farewell tour." Jones, a senior, is a former All-Ranorian and is projected to play abroad professionally. He's not the best in program history or anything, but the guy's been one of the best Governors of his era on the court, and he projects as a high end sixth man and a solid starter for whoever ends up snagging him. The three point specialist makes a living outside the line, stretching the perimeter to allow his bigger guys some space to eat up inside the paint...sometimes. He's far from good enough to be a surefire game-winner, and his teammates aren't exactly on his level.

Of course for now, his focus is going to be on leading this team to a solid conference performance and making the Ultra 64, if not potentially winning the conference.

Coming in at 3-1 through four, his Governors are far from the favorite to pull that off. With Sadeg State, Mar Sara Tech (another rival) and TJUN-ian Universidad Carlandas ahead of them, they'll have to punch up a bit to steal a game or two here and there to really get a shot at the first seed in the conference tournament, and hope for some fortunate upsets in the conference tournament to go the distance there. However, they should have enough gas to get into the overall tournament if they can maintain a winning pace, and with the madness of college basketball, all you really need is a chance.

NSCAA Recruiting: How Can Ranoria Be More Competitive?

It's no secret that Ranoria isn't a basketball nation. They had enough talent to put a solid team together and compete, but that was about it in terms of the IBC. And the NSCAA hasn't been much better. But aside from Ranoria State, the true top dogs of the college basketball world have turned their noses up at the international competition. Most of the teams represented here are traditional gridiron schools - or in the case of Matthensville Polytechnic and Rouyoutte - are just straight up uninterested in sports for the most part. Highport Christian University, The University of Mariana, and Dietrich Technical College, among other high-echelon squads, have seemingly barely considered the tournament. "We don't believe the NSCAA is conducive to the goals of our athletic department," said the AD of UoM prior to NSCAA 14. It's true that basketball programs - like pretty much any team besides football - run at a loss, but is that really the only reason behind withholding their squads?

Perhaps the schools have seen the NSCF take precedence over domestic college football - to the point that blue bloods in Richardson and Cold Hill departed from domestic play entirely and are the most-watched programs in the country. Many other universities have denounced the action, and that likely has a role to play. Along with the much more modest success of the Ranorian teams, it's not as appealing to go out there and get slaughtered by a bunch of thirteen and a quarter foot tall Drawkians who have even more of an advantage here than they do on the gridiron. That, along with more than triple the amount of teams playing, might also be why the Ranorian squads haven't drawn the same level of uber-talented recruits as their gridiron counterparts.

But realistically, does it matter? Even if the best of the best did participate, it's not like Ranoria State has done anything super impressive, even when they were fielding super-prospect Astor François in NSCAA 15. You know, the guy who was a QBL rookie of the year and stepped in to immedietely be the second best player on the national team?

So maybe it's better this way - the pompous better programs stay out, and while it wouldn't make much of a difference, we here at RSNN can pretend that it hypothetically would, just the way we like it.

Vricksinburg State Update:

Behind a 30 point outburst from long range sniper Tom Austerlitz and career underachiever Carl Wentz, Vricksinburg State erupted for the most dominant NSCAA performance in Ranorian history, with a 121-58 victory over the University of the Southern Coast.

“I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was,” said Carl Wentz after what was certainly a career best performane. It’s a bit ambitious for a guy with his… we’ll call it “lean” resumé as a senior, but it’s college basketball! Anything can happen, right?

Beauty School’s Different Win
by Kenzie Sherman, Concord Heights Times

Between the conclusion of the Cassadagan College Basketball season, and the beginning of the conference play period of the NSCAA’s, there was one school that did things a little differently. Concord Heights Beauty School, as the best finisher from our nation in the past NSCAA tournament was given the opportunity to participate in the Archifel International. What is that, you may ask?

Well, the Archifel International is a pre-season tournament in Drawkland that brings together eight schools to play in a knockout tournament. The competition, itself, does not mean anything in terms of the NSCAA standings, but it can mean a ton in terms of prestige, since there were some pretty good schools also taking part. Sadeg State and the University of Moravica are the ones that will immediately jump out at you, but all seven of the schools that joined the Beauticians in Drawkland are high quality, so a strong tournament was expected. The Beauty School would have to face Moravica right off the bat in the first round. They’d win, 79-76, as Taylor Finnegan drained a three at the buzzer to grab the win. “Let’s gooo!” Taylor said in a post game interview, “that’s what I’m talkin’ about! That’s a damn good team we just beat and I don’t care if it’s just an exhibition! Let’s roll!” Roll, they did, with an 84-70 win over Alexandra University (Cardenao), then a five point, 92-87 win over Sadeg State to clinch the title. That one was also a nail biter, with Finnegan knocking down two threes in the final 58 seconds to allow the team to inch away from what was, at the time, an 84-84 deadlock. Head coach Cate Hesson was elated with the mindset of the team from the beginning of the tournament, “the girls are very hungry. The bracket excited us, and off of home season, we are very confident that we will build on what we did in the last NSCAA. We do think we are championship caliber.” For winning the Archifel International, school administration awarded their players each $25,000. Perhaps that would not be allowed in some countries, but it is in Cassadaigua.

Concord Heights Beauty School will do their work from the Newlands Conference, which is based in Lisander, but an 0-2 start quickly brought the team back to reality. They won their next two matches, so the school is at 2-2 and will hope to climb the conference table as the competition wears on. Most expect them to be one of the top Cassadagan representatives in the NSCAA, so in time, we are optimistic that they will climb the table. Perhaps, the added games in the Archifel International meant that they were not as fresh for the opening games of conference play.

As the competition goes on, we’ll highlight different schools to talk about. This is where all of our representatives are after four games:
4-0: University of Concord Heights (Eternal), Southern Victoriaville University (Calania)
3-1: New Lakeland University (Big Seven Seven), University of Starksville (United)
2-2: Brattleboro Technical Institute (Flying Drawk), Grande Mountain University (Salamantica), Concord Heights Beauty School (Newlands)
1-3: Briannatown College (Woodlands)
0-4: None, thankfully.

All in all, not a bad start at all for our schools, with a combined record of 21-11. It is, of course, just a start of a long conference play period.

Sargaara Penetrators:

Alright well damn…not the worst start but not the 4-0 run we were hoping for. At least I’m playing well.

For Dragan Stoikchev, things were going alright. It was a little after sunrise in Stalisburg, a quiet little village in the mountainous portion of Eastern Cardenao, and the star center was enjoying the perks of being home for a few days. Perk #1? The cheesy-six egg omelet his mother made every morning. That’s good stuff right there, that’s the type of home lovin’ that helped him get to 7ft tall and nearly 300lbs. Perk #2? The tiny basketball court, if it could even be called a court, down at the local park. That’s where he ran every day as a boy, where he would shoot hoops, play around with friends, and develop his love for the game. That’s where he was now, getting some shots up, spinning around the paint, envisioning things that had gone well and not so well over the first four games of the NSCAA season.

Two wins, two losses. Dragan savored the memory of the Sargaara Technical Institute’s opening game against the University of Nicksia, where they had easily put them to bed in a 15 point victory. Man that game had felt good, he totally outmatched the Nicksian center and power forward as they tried to double team him all night. They were puny compared to him and he had his way for forty minutes. He hit his shots, hit a couple goofy fade-aways that he tried because why not, he set his teammates up, hell he even had a highlight-reel behind the back assist; basketball was a lot of fun sometimes.

It could suck sometimes too, the loss against Petervale A&M was extra disappointing for Dragan because he’d missed four of his five three-point shots and that had cost them the game. Dragan hated losing, but him being the reason for the loss was a new sensation and so it was back to the gym to get dialed in for the massive game against Loyola-Istria. The Banijan University is one of the best athletic schools in the world, having found success in both college football and in the NSCAA tournament. A win here would be a huge boost and a sign of validation for the program, so he hauled power forward Tecasso Marcasizo to the gym with him and the two spent hours going back and forth on the court and in the weight room, training specifically for this game. Training specifically to get the victory, climb up the rankings, and get an invite to the Big Dance. To do all of that and still lose to Loyola by six points? That hurt him. Losing two in a row for the first time? That motivated him.

Basketball could do that. It could suck ass and be awful but in the same moment be motivating and inspiring, and Dragan was definitely inspired. Next up was the Dhemixian College of Law. Law. What a concept, what a thing. Dragan had no time for law or those who spoke of it. What small law students could stand up to him, Dragan Stoikchev? A real man from real mountains. He was shocked when, upon the opening tipoff, he learned law students come in a variety of sizes, including 6’11 like Dhemixian freshman center Dante Leonard. It was a much harder fight than Dragan was expecting but he managed to come out on top, notching a triple-double as the STI Penetrators won 77-74. The winning bucket? A three-point splash from yours truly.

Two wins and two losses wasn’t ideal, he’d rather be 4-0 but after the Orange Sky Classic, how could he really care? He was $100,000NSD richer, things were good in his book. Shit, just like that he was the richest person in all of Stalisburg and he hadn’t even signed a professional contract yet.

As he messed around on his childhood court, the bridge through time for him, with all that money burning a hole in his pocket, he began to see all the various imperfections for the first time. There’s the crack in the pavement from the Maybleberry’s Best Strongman Competition of ‘94 when Jerry McCormick missed the pad when dropping his weight. There were the nets, always either torn apart, barely hanging by a thread, or straight up not there any more. Shit, there wasn’t a roof. Dragan could change all this now. He had the money, he knew all the workers in his village, he could repair the court, he could fix it all, he could make the court so much better, he could trick it out. Man…I could do so much with this, this court could be the biggest and best thing to happen to Stalisburg in a long time. He was thrilled to think about what this could look like before he clanged a shot off the backboard.

The backboard, holy shit the backboard, it was still dented from when Dragan had smashed his arm into it when he was younger and even bouncier, denting the frame and fracturing his arm. That was a long time ago now. That was his life though, that was the life of this court, the life of his village, less than 500 people, was woven into this court. I dunno if I want to take this away, I don’t want to lose this. This is my history.

……so why not build a new court?

LeBois Broncos

“Heyyyy Big J how you doinnnnng?”

“Yo Dog Jake Man Dude You Were So Good Man Against Tama Tech Man, 38 Points Man You Went ShaaaZingggggg!”

“Oh snap what’s up Jake! How you been man, haven’t run into you in a bit but you bet I’ve seen you on the screen!”

“OH MY GOD YOU’RE SO FUCKING HOT I LOVE YOUUU!!!!!”

For LeBois Broncos small forward Jake Massacano, it was good to be the man. He and the Broncos were running hot and blowing away the rest of the Big Seven Seven conference and everyone was keen to give the senior attention as he walked through campus. Shitfire, he might as well change his name to Bobby Dials at this point. He was the man.

BSU Broncos vs Tama Tech? An easy 38 point outing for him as he slashed to the hoop like a boss, he pulled up and hit threes, hit fed his teammates, he cleaned the glass, he shut his man down, he did it all and sweet shit he did it well. And then University of Hondo? Someone 5’8 or 5’10 lining up against him? Yeah right. Give him another 22 points, give him another W, give him another chance to prove that, pre-season chatter about him being a role player be damned, he was the man on this trigger-happy Broncos team. If Bobby could do it, he could do it.

In the build up to the game against the University of Daytona, Jake Massa went to a local house party and couldn’t believe the attention he was getting. Everyone wanted to talk to him, everyone wanted to get him a drink, all the girls were chatting him up and hoped to get with him, all the guys were chatting him up and hoped to get with him, holy fuck he was the man and he brought that confidence right into the Daytona showdown and Blew. Them. Up. His first ever double double. 28 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. Three games, three easy wins. And then…New Lakeland University. The biggest threat he’d faced so far. Or so that’s what the scouting report said. Or…that’s what Jake Massa assumed the report said. The game got harder the further you played, right? Anyway the Broncos won by 19 as Jake faced a double team for the first time, and he struggled to break through that to attack the basket, only scoring 13 points. He made up for that with a smooth triple double. He paired those 13 points with 10 rebounds and 11 assists as Big J found Pierre LeGoff twice for easy threes, he found freshman point guard Angus Lon Jrey Vernon three times and watched as the scorer easily found his shot, he fed his frontcourt and the subs too, he did it all.

“Heyyy Jake, you’re totally slaying it! You’re Big J now? My friend has an apartment near here, come tell us about your big game?”

Yeah, Jake Massacano was definitely doing it all.

Mount Ester forward Diderot Muenkat to enter QBL Draft, QIS Defensive Player of the Year to be 'alluring option' for top pick

Kim Yoon-Seong

BATHURST, ACADIE -- Mount Ester's All-Quebecois shooting guard Diderot Muenkat, commonly touted as a top three pick by most draft projections, is expected to enter the 2064 QBL Draft. This follows an outstanding, all-Quebecois redshirt sophomore season with the Lancers basketball programs still in middle of a quick encore undergoing in the form of Five Star Conference of the NSCAA basketball competition.

The decision, while not officially announced by Muenkat, is confirmed by a person with inside knowledge of the situation. The news is communicated under the conditions of the anonymity due to the draft-related media blackout policies by Mount Ester and the QIS until the end of NSCAA regular season in end of May. The official decision will be made at the start of the usual QBL and QWBL draft declaration window that lasts for two weeks, followed by two months between the end of the window and the draft days that will incorporate draft combines and respective college pro days.

Muenkat, who is 193cm tall and weighs 198 lb, is an explosive, high-flying combo guard who usually plays on the wing for Lancers, the MUS champions who would go onto record a Final Four run in the QIS men's championship tournament this March.

As a redshirt sophomore with the Lancers following a solid, all-rookie freshman year before an ACL required him to miss the entirety of what would have been his sophomore year, Muenkat had an outstanding year. He was honoured ahead of last March's QIS men's championship tournament in Montevicio, Yoseo-Manitoba, with a second-team Quebecois selection and QIS Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award after an outstanding campaign that would see him finish top five in the nation for scoring, rebounds and rebounds with 17.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.1 blocks, while shooting 37% from the three-point range. Muenkat would lead the Lancers to the MUS conference championship after seeded third, and would be named the conference tournament MVP.

In the QIS championship tournament, Muenkat had a solid tournament scoring over twenty points on each of his two games. He went for 9-of-17 in a 26-point, 9 rebound and 3 assist performance as the top-seed Lancers would beat out the 9th-seed Zarubino State University in Elite Eight after receiving a first-round bye. In the Final Four game against fourth-seeded Nideyinàn School, he too would record 21 points and 5 assists, but had efficiency-related issues as he went 8-for-26 in what would end up being a 65-68 loss to the eventual national champions.

Muenkat has been considered one of the top three prospects in the draft alongside Nideyinàn senior centre Cyril Wertz-Barkholdt and Yoseo-Montevicio's graduate power forward Marc Konowalchuk. With Yoseo-Montevicio's Presnel Ogulu deciding to return for his redshirt junior year with Yoseo-Montevicio in his announcement last week, and this year's class featuring no standout high school prospects, the race for this year's first overall pick appears to be an interesting one for all parties concerned.

Muenkat's considered to be a tempting, high-ceiling option by scouts, while QBL front offices seem to prefer Wertz-Barkholdt and Konowalchuk, two frontcourt players with strong defence and reliable inside scoring. With all three players still having a full season of international basketball left, with Nideyinàn, Yoseo-Montevicio and Mount Ester being three of eight Quebecois schools to participate, there stands a strong chance the casting vote will come down to their and their schools' respective NSCAA performances by the end.

Following the conclusion of the Lancers' NSCAA tenure, Muenkat is expected to join the Lancers women's stars Nzingha Rhys-McNeill and Pyeon Hye-Ryeon in the draft preparation. He will be the only Lancers player to declare for the QBL draft this year.

Matthensville Polytechnic Institute Locker Room
Shortly After Their Most Recent Win

This was a really cool program for the media majors at MPI - not that they existed much. A kind of work study program for them that gave them exclusive access to the star player of the winning team postgame, just once or twice a year for each sport. On top of running a school sports press - it was a cool gig. And saved the university the trouble of staffing professionals - nope, these kids paid the school to work.

And Kathy Mohican was excited to interview Terry Trias, the boy she'd been crushing on all year from across the Ergonomics of Trading 101 9 am course.

"Terry! Incredible performance out there, 19 points, 11 rebounds, how are you feeling after such a huge win?"

"Excuse me," he tried shuffling around her, "I need to check on the price of elefriend coin, it's supposed to be pumping any second."

"Wait, Terry! Just a couple questions!" She stepped in front of him, flashing a smile that had made her a high school heart throb, "What kind of preparation had you and the team this ready to take these guys on?"

"Please," he pleaded, glancing up at the clock, "I can't right now, I need to sell my holdings!"

"Terr-"

"Look," he cut her off, hands clasped, pleading in front of his face, "walk with me to my locker, let me check on elefriend coin, and then we can do the interview, okay!?"

"And you buy me dinner if it hits," she chuckled, "Let's go!"

So Terry Trias and Kathy Mohican sprinted into the Cryptokleptics locker room, where Terry fumbled with the face ID of his phone, which of course opened right into his crypto wallet. He clicked the green "sell" button, and immedietely cursed.

"Oh no..." Kathy bit her thumbail as he massaged his brow.

"Ten percent of my position sold just as it fell off a cliff, practically worthless. But I ten "x'ed" on the rest, so it works."

Later that night...

Terry Trias wasn't sure why exactly Kathy had asked him to walk her back to her dorm - it was late, but due to his incredible lack of social skills, he had been anxious the whole walk over, and was pretty sure he sweat more during that five minute conversation than during the game.

But it did make her stipulation easier, since he had known where to have the dinner he'd agreed to buy her delivered to.

So as he sat with World of LeagueCraft on one screen and bar charts on the other, when his phone buzzed he figured it was a thank you.

"I was asking you on a date, dummy." The message read, and Terry's eyes went wide.

"Everything makes so much sense now."

NSCAA - The Long Road II

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Mar 24, 2024 4:03 pm

Yes, this bad boy is a live table wherever these teams end up after the last 4 games, that's the order of coverage for the next show. Nice. right?

Central State (4-0)
The Grizzlies were #1 last season and went undefeated through the opening 4 games...but the Flying Drawk decided they didn't want that anymore and as such, both Everlin and Brattleboro Tech combined to give the Grizzlies their first two losses of the season. But CSU didn't give up at all and bounced back against Svemira and Somerset to go 2-2 in this split and 6-2 overall.

Al-Hilal (3-1)
3-1 last time out for the Islanders, which was certainly received well at the Royal Centre, but this split would certainly send that appreciation into overdrive. Dhemix State, Turbani Tech, Crown's College and Northern Moravica were all taken down in different ways...but the end result was an unbeaten split and 7-1 overall, enough to lead the Newlands outright. Fancy that, eh?

UCarib-Port Town (3-1)
Over in the Calania, UCPT started out 3-1 and the Green Flash were happy with that and hoped to build from that solid ground towards more success. Both Alexandria and Ducentu State put them to the sword but wins over San Jose Tech in OT and Fyre College saw a 2-2 split and 5-3 overall manifest itself in the Calania.

Carlandas (3-1)
Last time out, Los Leones shocked everyone by actually going 3-1 to start with...and they managed to keep things stable in the 2nd go around. They beat Lernia and Diplomacy back-to-back but then went ahead and lost 2 straight to Sakhalin State and National College...but still, a good start by UNCA.

UW-Wollongmatta Bay (2-2)
It was 2-2 last time for Wisdom on the Bay and for this split... things got worse for the Wallabies. Border Baptist was the only team they beat as Columbus-Prairie, Aston Tertiary and Coloratura State all combined for a 1-3 split and 3-5 overall in the Eternal. Ouch.

CPortside (2-2)
The Mariners also went 2-2 last time out and in the Pink 14, things stayed that way. They beat Nathan and Fabula de Forma, but fell to Saguenay and South Caddonia to remain level at 4-4.

Hongxai (2-2)
The Dragons did the exact same thing as the Ms in the B77, remaining at 4-4. They beat Tama Tech and Daytona, but lost to Hondo and New Lakeland...which sounds about right, I guess.

Pacifico (2-2)
Los Surfistas went 2-2 in the first split which, at the time, felt like something they would take...until this one came along and turned expectations on its head. Niki Dion Seng cooked and she powered UNPA past Concordia Kasandora, MPI, Raikennax and even Eldora in OT to produce a rare 4-0 split for Pacifico to send them top of the Five Star. Finally, the waves are looking pretty good in Rio Pacífico.
