Should Hotel Front Desk Employees be allowed to sit?

Postby San Lumen » Tue Mar 12, 2024 3:14 pm

A few months ago I stayed at a hotel where the front desk employees sat on chairs at the front desk. It was the first time i've ever seen this at any hotel. it got me thinking. Why don't more hotels do this? Standing for several hours a day isn't healthy but sitting isn't either.

Some hotels might say it's unprofessional but I don't see how. You can put chairs at the desk for the guests or require your front desk people to stand when a guest comes to the desk.

I don't see it as unprofessional to allow Front Desk employees to sit down and would likely make these jobs easier to retain employees. It would be a benefit.

What are your thoughts NSG?

Definitely. In fact, I’m surprised why hotels started the tradition of forcing their employees to stand at all. I’m AT a hotel right now, in fact, just arrived three and a half hours ago, and being at the reception desk sparked sympathy. For the twenty minutes I was waiting in line with my suitcase, I already felt tired and bored. And that was with my phone to entertain me. Imagine standing at the reception desk for eight hours a day, five days a week, with only a few very short breaks in between. You can’t sit, be on your phone, or do anything accept answer questions that you’ve already answered a thousand different times from various guests. And the only actual entertainment being the sounds from the nearby casino.
The least hotels could do for their employees would be to let them sit.

The bigger question is whether hotel employees should be allowed to leave. I say they should allowed to check out any time they want but they can never leave.

I think the fact that hotels think that it's unprofessional is really fucking sad. Of course they should be allowed to sit! That's what I would always expect to see when I walk into a Hilton.

But you can never leave"

Anyways, I've been to a few hotels where the staff had tall chairs to sit in while checking in guests and maintain the eye-level with those standing to check in.

I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to. I await any reason against this notion.

Mostly because they would have to stand up to interact with guests. The desks they sit behind are so tall, that you would essentially walk into the hotel and be greeted by an empty desk until they stood up.

They do it for the same reason Retail does it. So the Manager can come around and be like "How delightfully devious Seymore, those workers must be more efficient if they can't sit" because the managerial class in the US is basically constantly getting cloned and has no idea what the fuck they're doing.

A lot of businesses have somehow got it into their heads that employees sitting appears unprofessional.

Yes. Front desk managers, cashiers, etc. should all be given chairs.

ngl, the hotels probably are just trying to save costs by not buying chairs then.

Nah, it's just the usual "disdain for workers" that exists in relatively low-paying jobs. The Manager knows that you'd rather have a job than not, and they know that they think that they might make you a .020050120% more efficient worker if they make you miserable, so "get fucked wagie"

I don't think I've ever seen a cashier with a chair, at least where I am in California.

My store had a chair for Cashiers but I got in trouble the one time I ever sat down for a few minutes.

The hotels could be even more energy efficient by forcing them to bike all day as a way to provide extra electricity. (/j)

If they want to sit, they should be able to. But it's not really something that's unique to hotel workers. There's lots of jobs where people don't sit all day. I would say not sitting at a construction site all day is probably more difficult than not sitting in a hotel all day.

In my country it's very rare. I've can only recall seeing it at one hotel in California.

That's what I thought at first too, but I don't know if I'm just remembering wrong. It probably has something to do with the hotel you go too. They (currently) have to at least be standing where there is a customer there (to be at eye level, get stuff, etc.). I just can't remember ever having them stand up when I walked in, so I don't think they were ever sitting.
