Ghana's parliament has passed a law that makes it illegal to identify as LGBTQ. It imposes a prison sentence of up to three years for anyone convicted of identifying as LGBTQ+. It also imposes a maximum five-year jail term for forming or funding LGBTQ+ groups.

It is truly depressing to see such hate and intolerance towards people because of something they did not choose. This seems to be a growing thing in Africa.

I see this as a byproduct of a nation running under a religious dictatorship. Conservatism, or preserving the status quo is an ideology I disagree with, but one still grounded in reality. What is happening in Ghana is not conservatism, but reactionary thought. In my opinion, actively wanting to bring a country backwards is both despicable and not grounded in reality. And this seems to be what most American “conservative” politicians want

I'm not going to interact with this thread any more than this post because people will come here just to spread negativity and get a reaction out of people because they feed off of the suffering and despair of others.

That being said, this is purely a distraction. Just like Uganda, they want people focusing on this instead of the other things the country is facing such as economic instability, poor sanitation, corruption, lack of access to food, water, clothing, shelter etc.

Although the meeting in Uganda was billed as an attempt to protect the "sovereignty" of African states, it was actually co-sponsored by an American Christian right-wing organisation, Family Watch International (FWI).

Dr Kapya Kaoma, a Zambian priest in the Anglican Church and an academic at Boston University in the US, says African countries are being targeted by FWI and similar US-based organisations, and that the impact of its lobbying has been "horrible and inhumane" in parts of Africa, fuelling what he calls "militant homophobia".

"It is one thing to say: 'I don't agree with you being gay', but we didn't have the militant one, where politicians now are saying: 'You go to jail for life, you go to jail for talking about being gay, you go to jail because you're living with your fellow woman'," Dr Kaoma says.

A big part of this is probably wanting to distinct from the west. It's obviously reprehensible, but its likely that Ghanaian people see the worst bad actors in the west (because the squeaky wheel gets the grease, extreme people one way or another get attention.) Anyway, in Ghana, I presume that they see what happens in the West, and don't want the same thing happening in Ghana.

I do think this is blatant discrimination, though, and I hope LGBT people in Ghana can stay safe.

As others said, no. Environmental factors and society can impact how one identifies, but ultimately sexuality is not a conscious choice.

And I have never seen 2SLGBTQIA+, it genuinely looks like a wifi password. I just go with LGBTQ and call it a day.

They are quite traditional. You know so much so that the pope called African Christians "a special case."

He said that most bishops would understand in time,in regards to LGBT blessings but he wasn't sure for Africa
